നടരാജ സ്തോത്രം (പതംജലി കൃതമ്) This hymn is composed by Sage പതംജലി, (the author of യോഗസൂത്ര). It is remarkable in completely avoiding long vowels(ആ, ഈ, ഊ, ഏ, ഓ, ഐ, ഔ). Where ever a heavy syllable is needed, പതംജലി employs an അനുസ്വാര (ങ്, ഞ്, ണ്, ന്, മ്) in stead, and occasionally other consonant endings. So visually the hymn does not contain feet like കാ, കീ, കൂ, കോ, കൌ do; or horns like കേ, കൈ, കോ, കൌ do. This is an astounding feat given that every fourth syllable needs to be a heavy syllable (ഗുരു). As a result, you will hear the nasal sound അനുസ്വാര every fourth syllable! Also not very coincidentally, പതംജലി's name itself does not contain legs or horns! There are two stories regarding its origin. 2. Once Sage വ്യാഘ്രപാദ teases പതംജലി, saying "How can you see the Cosmic Dance of the Lord, when you do not even have horns or feet?". പതംജലി composes this hymn as an answer, symbolically cutting വ്യാഘ്രപാദ's (meaning Tiger-foot) feet. The meter for this song is also called ചരണശൃംഗരഹിതമ്. And now the hymn in praise of Lord നടരാജ without the use of ചരണ (feet) and ശൃംഗ (horns); indicative of നംദി and ഭൃംഗി, Lord ശിവ's attendants, as a metaphor; and indicative of long vowels of the alphabet, as poetic decoration!
