ನಟರಾಜ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಂ (ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ ಕೃತಮ್)

This hymn is composed by Sage ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ, (the author of ಯೋಗಸೂತ್ರ). It is remarkable in completely avoiding long vowels(ಆ, ಈ, ಊ, ಏ, ಓ, ಐ, ಔ). Where ever a heavy syllable is needed, ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ employs an ಅನುಸ್ವಾರ (ಙ್, ಞ್, ಣ್, ನ್, ಮ್) in stead, and occasionally other consonant endings. So visually the hymn does not contain feet like ಕಾ, ಕೀ, ಕೂ, ಕೋ, ಕೌ do; or horns like ಕೇ, ಕೈ, ಕೋ, ಕೌ do. This is an astounding feat given that every fourth syllable needs to be a heavy syllable (ಗುರು). As a result, you will hear the nasal sound ಅನುಸ್ವಾರ every fourth syllable! Also not very coincidentally, ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ's name itself does not contain legs or horns!

There are two stories regarding its origin.
1. ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ goes to see ಶಿವ at ಚಿದಮ್ಬರಮ್ and his assistant ನನ್ದಿ, the bull does not let him in. To teach him a lesson, ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ composes a hymn without feet or horns, thus symbolically cutting ನನ್ದಿ's feet and horns leading to his humiliation. ಶಿವ appears and also dances to the song's rhythmic tune.

2. Once Sage ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಪಾದ teases ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ, saying "How can you see the Cosmic Dance of the Lord, when you do not even have horns or feet?". ಪತಞ್ಜಲಿ composes this hymn as an answer, symbolically cutting ವ್ಯಾಘ್ರಪಾದ's (meaning Tiger-foot) feet.

The meter for this song is also called ಚರಣಶೃಙ್ಗರಹಿತಮ್.
There are 26 syllables per line. Each line goes as

And now the hymn in praise of Lord ನಟರಾಜ without the use of ಚರಣ (feet) and ಶೃಙ್ಗ (horns); indicative of ನನ್ದಿ and ಭೃಙ್ಗಿ, Lord ಶಿವ's attendants, as a metaphor; and indicative of long vowels of the alphabet, as poetic decoration!
