නටරාජ ස්තෝත්රං (පතංජලි කෘතම්)

This hymn is composed by Sage පතංජලි, (the author of යෝගසූත්ර). It is remarkable in completely avoiding long vowels(ආ, ඊ, ඌ, ඒ, ඕ, ඓ, ඖ). Where ever a heavy syllable is needed, පතංජලි employs an අනුස්වාර (ඞ්, ඤ්, ණ්, න්, ම්) in stead, and occasionally other consonant endings. So visually the hymn does not contain feet like කා, කී, කූ, කෝ, කෞ do; or horns like කේ, කෛ, කෝ, කෞ do. This is an astounding feat given that every fourth syllable needs to be a heavy syllable (ගුරු). As a result, you will hear the nasal sound අනුස්වාර every fourth syllable! Also not very coincidentally, පතංජලි's name itself does not contain legs or horns!

There are two stories regarding its origin.
1. පතංජලි goes to see ශිව at චිදංබරම් and his assistant නංදි, the bull does not let him in. To teach him a lesson, පතංජලි composes a hymn without feet or horns, thus symbolically cutting නංදි's feet and horns leading to his humiliation. ශිව appears and also dances to the song's rhythmic tune.

2. Once Sage ව්යාඝ්රපාද teases පතංජලි, saying "How can you see the Cosmic Dance of the Lord, when you do not even have horns or feet?". පතංජලි composes this hymn as an answer, symbolically cutting ව්යාඝ්රපාද's (meaning Tiger-foot) feet.

The meter for this song is also called චරණශෘංගරහිතම්.
There are 26 syllables per line. Each line goes as
නනන්නන නනන්නන නනන්නන නනන්නන නනන්නන නනන්නන නනං or
තතංතත තතංතත තතංතත තතංතත තතංතත තතංතත තතං
අථ චරණශෘංගරහිත ශ්රී නටරාජ ස්තෝත්රං

And now the hymn in praise of Lord නටරාජ without the use of චරණ (feet) and ශෘංග (horns); indicative of නංදි and භෘංගි, Lord ශිව's attendants, as a metaphor; and indicative of long vowels of the alphabet, as poetic decoration!
