नटराज स्तोत्रं (पतञ्जलि कृतम्) This hymn is composed by Sage पतञ्जलि, (the author of योगसूत्र). It is remarkable in completely avoiding long vowels(आ, ई, ऊ, ए, ओ, ऐ, औ). Where ever a heavy syllable is needed, पतञ्जलि employs an अनुस्वार (ङ्, ञ्, ण्, न्, म्) in stead, and occasionally other consonant endings. So visually the hymn does not contain feet like का, की, कू, को, कौ do; or horns like के, कै, को, कौ do. This is an astounding feat given that every fourth syllable needs to be a heavy syllable (गुरु). As a result, you will hear the nasal sound अनुस्वार every fourth syllable! Also not very coincidentally, पतञ्जलि's name itself does not contain legs or horns! There are two stories regarding its origin. 2. Once Sage व्याघ्रपाद teases पतञ्जलि, saying "How can you see the Cosmic Dance of the Lord, when you do not even have horns or feet?". पतञ्जलि composes this hymn as an answer, symbolically cutting व्याघ्रपाद's (meaning Tiger-foot) feet. The meter for this song is also called चरणशृङ्गरहितम्. And now the hymn in praise of Lord नटराज without the use of चरण (feet) and शृङ्ग (horns); indicative of नन्दि and भृङ्गि, Lord शिव's attendants, as a metaphor; and indicative of long vowels of the alphabet, as poetic decoration!
