ಕರ್ಣಾಟಕ ಸಙ್ಗೀತಂ ಸ್ವರಜತಿ 1 (ರಾರ ವೇಣು ಗೋಪ ಬಾಲಾ)

Swarajatis are more sophisticated musical forms than geethams, both in terms of size and quality. They have been composed in the 3rd speed, and generally have a pallavi and a few Charanams. The charanams are generally rendered once as swaras and the second time as lyrics. Some swarajatis also have an anupallavi incorporated in them. Many swarajatis like the sublimely devotional ratna-trayam of Shyama Shastri are concert worthy.

ರಾರ ವೇಣು ಗೋಪ ಬಾಲಾ - these Telugu lyrics implore Lord Krishna, “Please come my lord Venugopala”. Believed to be composed by Patnam Subrahmanya Ayyar, this popular Swarajathi with its pleasing melody, in Carnatic raga Bilahari and set to Adi Talam, is one of the early compositions that one learns when they start Carnatic music lessons.

Please come (ರಾರ), Lord Venugopala (Krishna), embodiment (ಶೀಲ) of adorable (ರಾಜಿಥ) and victorious (ಜಯ) qualities (ಸದ್ಗುಣ).

O, the one with big (ಸಾರ) eyes (ಆಕ್ಷ), what (ಏಮಿ) offenses (ನೇರ) have I committed? I cannot bear (ಕೋರ್ವಲೇರ) the onslaught of Cupid (ಮಾರುಬಾರಿ), the god of Love.

O Nandagopalaa! I have nowhere else to go. You come here (ವಿನ್ದು ರಾರಾ) with a free mind and spread cheer (ಕೆದುರುಗ ಗದಿಯರ).
You have always responded to the prayers (ನಿನ್ ಪಿಲಚಿನ) of your devotees. But why don't you respond (ಪಲುಕವು) to me (ನಲುಗಕುರಾ)? You have responded to the elephant (ಕರಿ) Gajendra's call and granted him a boon (ವರದಾ). Please listen to my repeated calls (ಮರಿ ಮರಿ ನಾ ಅಧರಮುಗ್ರೊ) protect me quickly (ಲರಕನಿ ಕರಮುಗ)!

Don't be angry because I persist with you respectfully.
Come (ರಾ), O the one who held the mountain Govardhana (ನಗಧರ)!
Come ("raa"), O the one who destroyed (ಹರ) the demon Mura (ಮುರ)!
Come (ರಾ), O one who destroys (ಹರ) the sorrows of the world (ಭವ)!
Dont leave (ಚೇಕೋರಾ) this (ಈ) devotee (ಮಗುವನು), your delicate (ಸೊಗಸಿನಿ) child (ಲಲಲನು) alone!
Listen to my prayers and wishes (ಕೋರಿಕ)!
I prostrate (ದೆನ್ದಮು) to you (ನೀಯೆನ್ದ)!
I want to reach (ಚೇರನು) your company (ನೀಚೆನ್ತ)!
Please do not forget me (ಮರವಕುರಾ)!
With my hands and limbs (ಕರಮುಲ ಚೇ) I seek refuge (ಶರಣನೆ) in you (ನಿನ್ನು) again and again (ಮರಿಮರಿ).
