ಚಾಣಕ್ಯ ನೀತಿ - ಸಪ್ತಮೋಽಧ್ಯಾಯಃ

ಅರ್ಥನಾಶಂ ಮನಸ್ತಾಪಂ ಗೃಹೇ ದುಶ್ಚರಿತಾನಿ ಚ ।
ವಂಚನಂ ಚಾಪಮಾನಂ ಚ ಮತಿಮಾನ್ನ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಯೇತ್ ॥ 01 ॥

A wise man should not reveal his loss of wealth, the vexation of his mind, the misconduct of his own wife, base words spoken by others, and disgrace that has befallen him.

ಧನಧಾನ್ಯಪ್ರಯೋಗೇಷು ವಿದ್ಯಾಸಂಗ್ರಹಣೇ ತಥಾ ।
ಆಹಾರೇ ವ್ಯವಹಾರೇ ಚ ತ್ಯಕ್ತಲಜ್ಜಃ ಸುಖೀ ಭವೇತ್ ॥ 02 ॥

He who gives up shyness in monetary dealings, in acquiring knowledge, in eating and in business, becomes happy.

ಸಂತೋಷಾಮೃತತೃಪ್ತಾನಾಂ ಯತ್ಸುಖಂ ಶಾಂತಿರೇವ ಚ ।
ನ ಚ ತದ್ಧನಲುಬ್ಧಾನಾಮಿತಶ್ಚೇತಶ್ಚ ಧಾವತಾಂ ॥ 03 ॥

The happiness and peace attained by those satisfied by the nectar of spiritual tranquillity is not attained by greedy persons restlessly moving here and there.

ಸಂತೋಷಸ್ತ್ರಿಷು ಕರ್ತವ್ಯಃ ಸ್ವದಾರೇ ಭೋಜನೇ ಧನೇ ।
ತ್ರಿಷು ಚೈವ ನ ಕರ್ತವ್ಯೋಽಧ್ಯಯನೇ ಜಪದಾನಯೋಃ ॥ 04 ॥

One should feel satisfied with the following three things; his own wife, food given by Providence and wealth acquired by honest effort; but one should never feel satisfied with the following three; study, chanting the holy names of the Lord (japa) and charity.

ವಿಪ್ರಯೋರ್ವಿಪ್ರವಹ್ನ್ಯೋಶ್ಚ ದಂಪತ್ಯೋಃ ಸ್ವಾಮಿಭೃತ್ಯಯೋಃ ।
ಅಂತರೇಣ ನ ಗಂತವ್ಯಂ ಹಲಸ್ಯ ವೃಷಭಸ್ಯ ಚ ॥ 05 ॥

Do not pass between two brahmanas, between a brahmana and his sacrificial fire, between a wife and her husband, a master and his servant, and a plough and an ox.

ಪಾದಾಭ್ಯಾಂ ನ ಸ್ಪೃಶೇದಗ್ನಿಂ ಗುರುಂ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣಮೇವ ಚ ।
ನೈವ ಗಾಂ ನ ಕುಮಾರೀಂ ಚ ನ ವೃದ್ಧಂ ನ ಶಿಶುಂ ತಥಾ ॥ 06 ॥

Do not let your foot touch fire, the spiritual master or a brahmana; it must never touch a cow, a virgin, an old person or a child.

ಶಕಟಂ ಪಂಚಹಸ್ತೇನ ದಶಹಸ್ತೇನ ವಾಜಿನಮ್ ।
ಗಜಂ ಹಸ್ತಸಹಸ್ರೇಣ ದೇಶತ್ಯಾಗೇನ ದುರ್ಜನಂ ॥ 07 ॥

Keep one thousand cubits away from an elephant, a hundred from a horse, ten from a horned beast, but keep away from the wicked by leaving the country.

ಹಸ್ತೀ ಅಂಕುಶಮಾತ್ರೇಣ ವಾಜೀ ಹಸ್ತೇನ ತಾಡ್ಯತೇ ।
ಶ‍ಋಂಗೀ ಲಗುಡಹಸ್ತೇನ ಖಡ್ಗಹಸ್ತೇನ ದುರ್ಜನಃ ॥ 08 ॥

An elephant is controlled by a goad (ankusha), a horse by a slap of the hand, a horned animal with the show of a stick, and a rascal with a sword.

ತುಷ್ಯಂತಿ ಭೋಜನೇ ವಿಪ್ರಾ ಮಯೂರಾ ಘನಗರ್ಜಿತೇ ।
ಸಾಧವಃ ಪರಸಂಪತ್ತೌ ಖಲಾಃ ಪರವಿಪತ್ತಿಷು ॥ 09 ॥

Brahmanas find satisfaction in a good meal, peacocks in the peal of thunder, a sadhu in seeing the prosperity of others, and the wicked in the misery of others.

ಅನುಲೋಮೇನ ಬಲಿನಂ ಪ್ರತಿಲೋಮೇನ ದುರ್ಜನಮ್ ।
ಆತ್ಮತುಲ್ಯಬಲಂ ಶತ್ರುಂ ವಿನಯೇನ ಬಲೇನ ವಾ ॥ 10 ॥

Conciliate a strong man by submission, a wicked man by opposition, and the one whose power is equal to yours by politeness or force.

ಬಾಹುವೀರ್ಯಂ ಬಲಂ ರಾಜ್ಞಾಂ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣೋ ಬ್ರಹ್ಮವಿದ್ಬಲೀ ।
ರೂಪಯೌವನಮಾಧುರ್ಯಂ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಣಾಂ ಬಲಮನುತ್ತಮಂ ॥ 11 ॥

The power of a king lies in his mighty arms; that of a brahmana in his spiritual knowledge; and that of a woman in her beauty youth and sweet words.

ನಾತ್ಯಂತಂ ಸರಲೈರ್ಭಾವ್ಯಂ ಗತ್ವಾ ಪಶ್ಯ ವನಸ್ಥಲೀಮ್ ।
ಛಿದ್ಯಂತೇ ಸರಲಾಸ್ತತ್ರ ಕುಬ್ಜಾಸ್ತಿಷ್ಠಂತಿ ಪಾದಪಾಃ ॥ 12 ॥

Do not be very upright in your dealings for you would see by going to the forest that straight trees are cut down while crooked ones are left standing.

ಯತ್ರೋದಕಂ ತತ್ರ ವಸಂತಿ ಹಂಸಾ-
ಸ್ತಥೈವ ಶುಷ್ಕಂ ಪರಿವರ್ಜಯಂತಿ ।
ನ ಹಂಸತುಲ್ಯೇನ ನರೇಣ ಭಾವ್ಯಂ
ಪುನಸ್ತ್ಯಜಂತಃ ಪುನರಾಶ್ರಯಂತೇ ॥ 13 ॥

Swans live wherever there is water, and leave the place where water dries up; let not a man act so -- and come and go as he pleases.

ಉಪಾರ್ಜಿತಾನಾಂ ವಿತ್ತಾನಾಂ ತ್ಯಾಗ ಏವ ಹಿ ರಕ್ಷಣಮ್ ।
ತಡಾಗೋದರಸಂಸ್ಥಾನಾಂ ಪರೀವಾಹ ಇವಾಂಭಸಾಂ ॥ 14 ॥

Accumulated wealth is saved by spending just as incoming fresh water is saved by letting out stagnant water.

ಯಸ್ಯಾರ್ಥಾಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಮಿತ್ರಾಣಿ ಯಸ್ಯಾರ್ಥಾಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಬಾಂಧವಾಃ ।
ಯಸ್ಯಾರ್ಥಾಃ ಸ ಪುಮಾಁಲ್ಲೋಕೇ ಯಸ್ಯಾರ್ಥಾಃ ಸ ಚ ಪಂಡಿತಃ ॥ 15 ॥

He who has wealth has friends and relations; he alone survives and is respected as a man.

ಸ್ವರ್ಗಸ್ಥಿತಾನಾಮಿಹ ಜೀವಲೋಕೇ
ಚತ್ವಾರಿ ಚಿಹ್ನಾನಿ ವಸಂತಿ ದೇಹೇ ।
ದಾನಪ್ರಸಂಗೋ ಮಧುರಾ ಚ ವಾಣೀ
ದೇವಾರ್ಚನಂ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣತರ್ಪಣಂ ಚ ॥ 16 ॥

The following four characteristics of the denizens of heaven may be seen in the residents of this earth planet; charity, sweet words, worship of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and satisfying the needs of brahmanas.

ಅತ್ಯಂತಕೋಪಃ ಕಟುಕಾ ಚ ವಾಣೀ
ದರಿದ್ರತಾ ಚ ಸ್ವಜನೇಷು ವೈರಮ್ ।
ನೀಚಪ್ರಸಂಗಃ ಕುಲಹೀನಸೇವಾ
ಚಿಹ್ನಾನಿ ದೇಹೇ ನರಕಸ್ಥಿತಾನಾಂ ॥ 17 ॥

The following qualities of the denizens of hell may characterise men on earth; extreme wrath, harsh speech, enmity with one's relations, the company with the base, and service to men of low extraction.

ಗಮ್ಯತೇ ಯದಿ ಮೃಗೇಂದ್ರಮಂದಿರಂ
ಲಭ್ಯತೇ ಕರಿಕಪಾಲಮೌಕ್ತಿಕಮ್ ।
ಜಂಬುಕಾಲಯಗತೇ ಚ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯತೇ
ವತ್ಸಪುಚ್ಛಖರಚರ್ಮಖಂಡನಂ ॥ 18 ॥

By going to the den of a lion pearls from the head of an elephant may be obtained; but by visiting the hole of a jackal nothing but the tail of a calf or a bit of the hide of an ass may found.

ಶುನಃ ಪುಚ್ಛಮಿವ ವ್ಯರ್ಥಂ ಜೀವಿತಂ ವಿದ್ಯಯಾ ವಿನಾ ।
ನ ಗುಹ್ಯಗೋಪನೇ ಶಕ್ತಂ ನ ಚ ದಂಶನಿವಾರಣೇ ॥ 19 ॥

The life of an uneducated man is as useless as the tail of a dog which neither covers its rear end, nor protects it from the bites of insects.

ವಾಚಾಂ ಶೌಚಂ ಚ ಮನಸಃ ಶೌಚಮಿಂದ್ರಿಯನಿಗ್ರಹಃ ।
ಸರ್ವಭೂತದಯಾಶೌಚಮೇತಚ್ಛೌಚಂ ಪರಾರ್ಥಿನಾಂ ॥ 20 ॥

Purity of speech, of the mind, of the senses, and the of a compassionate heart are needed by one who desires to rise to the divine platform.

ಪುಷ್ಪೇ ಗಂಧಂ ತಿಲೇ ತೈಲಂ ಕಾಷ್ಠೇಽಗ್ನಿಂ ಪಯಸಿ ಘೃತಮ್ ।
ಇಕ್ಷೌ ಗುಡಂ ತಥಾ ದೇಹೇ ಪಶ್ಯಾತ್ಮಾನಂ ವಿವೇಕತಃ ॥ 21 ॥

As you seek fragrance in a flower, oil in the sesamum seed, fire in wood, ghee in milk, and jaggery (guda) in sugarcane; so seek the spirit that is in the body by means of discrimination.
