श्लोकः
श्रीभगवानुवाच
मय्यासक्तमनाः पार्थ योगं युंजन्मदाश्रयः ।
असंशयं समग्रं मां यथा ज्ञास्यसि तच्छृणु ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning
श्री-भगवान् उवाच — the Supreme Lord said; मयि — to Me; आसक्त-मनाः — mind attached; पार्थ — O son of Prithā; योगम् — self-realization; युंजन् — practicing; मत्-आश्रयः — in consciousness of Me (Kriṣṇa consciousness); असंशयम् — without doubt; समग्रम् — completely; माम् — Me; यथा — how; ज्ञास्यसि — you can know; तत् — that; शृणु — try to hear.

Translation
Sri Krishna said: Now hear, O son of Prithā, how by practicing yoga with the mind fixed on Me and taking refuge in Me, you shall know Me completely, without any doubt.

श्लोकः
ज्ञानं तेऽहं सविज्ञानमिदं वक्ष्याम्यशेषतः ।
यज्ज्ञात्वा नेह भूयोऽन्यज्ज्ञातव्यमवशिष्यते ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning
ज्ञानम् — phenomenal knowledge; ते — unto you; अहम् — I; स — with; विज्ञानम् — numinous knowledge; इदम् — this; वक्ष्यामि — shall explain; अशेषतः — in full; यत् — which; ज्ञात्वा — knowing; न — not; इह — in this world; भूयः — further; अन्यत् — anything more; ज्ञातव्यम् — knowable; अवशिष्यते — remains.

Translation
I shall tell you fully about knowledge and realization, that nothing further remains to be known in this world.

श्लोकः
मनुष्याणां सहस्रेषु कश्चिद्यतति सिद्धये ।
यततामपि सिद्धानां कश्चिन्मां वेत्ति तत्त्वतः ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning
मनुष्याणाम् — of men; सहस्रेषु — out of many thousands; कश्चित् — someone; यतति — endeavors; सिद्धये — for perfection; यतताम् — of those so endeavoring; अपि — indeed; सिद्धानाम् — of those who have achieved perfection; कश्चित् — someone; माम् — Me; वेत्ति — does know; तत्त्वतः — in fact.

Translation
Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.

श्लोकः
भूमिरापोऽनलो वायुः खं मनो बुद्धिरेव च ।
अहंकार इतीयं मे भिन्ना प्रकृतिरष्टधा ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning
भूमिः — earth; आपः — water; अनलः — fire; वायुः — air; खम् — ether; मनः — mind; बुद्धिः — intelligence; एव — certainly; च — and; अहंकारः — false ego; इति — thus; इयम् — all these; मे — My; भिन्ना — separated; प्रकृतिः — energies; अष्टधा — eightfold.

Translation
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego – all together these eight constitute My separated material energies.

श्लोकः
अपरेयमितस्त्वन्यां प्रकृतिं विद्धि मे पराम् ।
जीवभूतां महाबाहो ययेदं धार्यते जगत् ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning
अपरा — inferior; इयम् — this; इतः — besides this; तु — but; अन्याम् — another; प्रकृतिम् — energy; विद्धि — just try to understand; मे — My; पराम् — superior; जीव-भूताम् — comprising the living entities; महा-बाहो — O mighty-armed one; यया — by whom; इदम् — this; धार्यते — is utilized or exploited; जगत् — the material world.

Translation
Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.

श्लोकः
एतद्योनीनि भूतानि सर्वाणीत्युपधारय ।
अहं कृत्स्नस्य जगतः प्रभवः प्रलयस्तथा ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning
एतत् — these two natures; योनीनि — whose source of birth; भूतानि — everything created; सर्वाणि — all; इति — thus; उपधारय — know; अहम् — I; कृत्स्नस्य — all-inclusive; जगतः — of the world; प्रभवः — the source of manifestation; प्रलयः — annihilation; तथा — as well as.

Translation
All created beings have their source in these two natures. Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both the origin and the dissolution.

श्लोकः
मत्तः परतरं नान्यत्किंचिदस्ति धनंजय ।
मयि सर्वमिदं प्रोतं सूत्रे मणिगणा इव ॥ 7 ॥

Meaning
मत्तः — beyond Me; पर-तरम् — superior; न — not; अन्यत् किंचित् — anything else; अस्ति — there is; धनम्-जय — O conqueror of wealth; मयि — in Me; सर्वम् — all that be; इदम् — which we see; प्रोतम् — is strung; सूत्रे — on a thread; मणि-गणाः — pearls; इव — like.

Translation
O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.

श्लोकः
रसोऽहमप्सु कौंतेय प्रभास्मि शशिसूर्ययोः ।
प्रणवः सर्ववेदेषु शब्दः खे पौरुषं नृषु ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning
रसः — taste; अहम् — I; अप्सु — in water; कौंतेय — O son of Kuntī; प्रभा — the light; अस्मि — I am; शशि-सूर्ययोः — of the moon and the sun; प्रणवः — the three letters a-u-m; सर्व — in all; वेदेषु — the Vedas; शब्दः — sound vibration; खे — in the ether; पौरुषम् — ability; नृषु — in men.

Translation
O son of Kuntī, I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable oM in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.

श्लोकः
पुण्यो गंधः पृथिव्यां च तेजश्चास्मि विभावसौ ।
जीवनं सर्वभूतेषु तपश्चास्मि तपस्विषु ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning
पुण्यः — original; गंधः — fragrance; पृथिव्याम् — in the earth; च — also; तेजः — heat; च — also; अस्मि — I am; विभावसौ — in the fire; जीवनम् — life; सर्व — in all; भूतेषु — living entities; तपः — penance; च — also; अस्मि — I am; तपस्विषु — in those who practice penance.

Translation
I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

श्लोकः
बीजं मां सर्वभूतानां विद्धि पार्थ सनातनम् ।
बुद्धिर्बुद्धिमतामस्मि तेजस्तेजस्विनामहम् ॥ 10 ॥

Meaning
बीजम् — the seed; माम् — Me; सर्व-भूतानाम् — of all living entities; विद्धि — try to understand; पार्थ — O son of Prithā; सनातनम् — original, eternal; बुद्धिः — intelligence; बुद्धि-मताम् — of the intelligent; अस्मि — I am; तेजः — prowess; तेजस्विनाम् — of the powerful; अहम् — I am.

Translation
O son of Prithā, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men.

श्लोकः
बलं बलवतां चाहं कामरागविवर्जितम् ।
धर्माविरुद्धो भूतेषु कामोऽस्मि भरतर्षभ ॥ 11 ॥

Meaning
बलम् — strength; बल-वताम् — of the strong; च — and; अहम् — I am; काम — passion; राग — and attachment; विवर्जितम् — devoid of; धर्म-अविरुद्धः — not against religious principles; भूतेषु — in all beings; कामः — sex life; अस्मि — I am; भरत-ऋषभ — O lord of the Bhāratas.

Translation
I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bhāratas [Arjuna].

श्लोकः
ये चैव सात्त्विका भावा राजसास्तामसाश्च ये ।
मत्त एवेति तान्विद्धि न त्वहं तेषु ते मयि ॥ 12 ॥

Meaning
ये — all which; च — and; एव — certainly; सात्त्विकाः — in goodness; भावाः — states of being; राजसाः — in the mode of passion; तामसाः — in the mode of ignorance; च — also; ये — all which; मत्तः — from Me; एव — certainly; इति — thus; तान् — those; विद्धि — try to know; न — not; तु — but; अहम् — I; तेषु — in them; ते — they; मयि — in Me.

Translation
Know that all states of being – be they of goodness, passion or ignorance – are manifested by My energy. I am, in one sense, everything, but I am independent. I am not under the modes of material nature, for they, on the contrary, are within Me.

श्लोकः
त्रिभिर्गुणमयैर्भावैरेभिः सर्वमिदं जगत् ।
मोहितं नाभिजानाति मामेभ्यः परमव्ययम् ॥ 13 ॥

Meaning
त्रिभिः — three; गुण-मयैः — consisting of the guṇas; भावैः — by the states of being; एभिः — all these; सर्वम् — whole; इदम् — this; जगत् — universe; मोहितम् — deluded; न अभिजानाति — does not know; माम् — Me; एभ्यः — above these; परम् — the Supreme; अव्ययम् — inexhaustible.

Translation
Deluded by the three modes [goodness, passion and ignorance], the whole world does not know Me, who am above the modes and inexhaustible.

श्लोकः
दैवी ह्येषा गुणमयी मम माया दुरत्यया ।
मामेव ये प्रपद्यंते मायामेतां तरंति ते ॥ 14 ॥

Meaning
दैवी — transcendental; हि — certainly; एषा — this; गुण-मयी — consisting of the three modes of material nature; मम — My; माया — energy; दुरत्यया — very difficult to overcome; माम् — unto Me; एव — certainly; ये — those who; प्रपद्यंते — surrender; मायां एताम् — this illusory energy; तरंति — overcome; ते — they.

Translation
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.

श्लोकः
न मां दुष्कृतिनो मूढाः प्रपद्यंते नराधमाः ।
माययापहृतज्ञाना आसुरं भावमाश्रिताः ॥ 15 ॥

Meaning
न — not; माम् — unto Me; दुष्कृतिनः — miscreants; मूढाः — foolish; प्रपद्यंते — surrender; नर-अधमाः — lowest among mankind; मायया — by the illusory energy; अपहृत — stolen; ज्ञानाः — whose knowledge; आसुरम् — demonic; भावम् — nature; आश्रिताः — accepting.

Translation
Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.

श्लोकः
चतुर्विधा भजंते मां जनाः सुकृतिनोऽर्जुन ।
आर्तो जिज्ञासुरर्थार्थी ज्ञानी च भरतर्षभ ॥ 16 ॥

Meaning
चतुः-विधाः — four kinds of; भजंते — render services; माम् — unto Me; जनाः — persons; सु-कृतिनः — those who are pious; अर्जुन — O Arjuna; आर्तः — the distressed; जिज्ञासुः — the inquisitive; अर्थ-अर्थी — one who desires material gain; ज्ञानी — one who knows things as they are; च — also; भरत-ऋषभ — O great one amongst the descendants of Bharata.

Translation
O best among the Bhāratas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me – the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.

श्लोकः
तेषां ज्ञानी नित्ययुक्त एकभक्तिर्विशिष्यते ।
प्रियो हि ज्ञानिनोऽत्यर्थमहं स च मम प्रियः ॥ 17 ॥

Meaning
तेषाम् — out of them; ज्ञानी — one in full knowledge; नित्य-युक्तः — always engaged; एक — only; भक्तिः — in devotional service; विशिष्यते — is special; प्रियः — very dear; हि — certainly; ज्ञानिनः — to the person in knowledge; अत्यर्थम् — highly; अहम् — I am; सः — he; च — also; मम — to Me; प्रियः — dear.

Translation
Of these, the one who is in full knowledge and who is always engaged in pure devotional service is the best. For I am very dear to him, and he is dear to Me.

श्लोकः
उदाराः सर्व एवैते ज्ञानी त्वात्मैव मे मतम् ।
आस्थितः स हि युक्तात्मा मामेवानुत्तमां गतिम् ॥ 18 ॥

Meaning
उदाराः — magnanimous; सर्वे — all; एव — certainly; एते — these; ज्ञानी — one who is in knowledge; तु — but; आत्मा एव — just like Myself; मे — My; मतम् — opinion; आस्थितः — situated; सः — he; हि — certainly; युक्त-आत्मा — engaged in devotional service; माम् — in Me; एव — certainly; अनुत्तमाम् — the highest; गतिम् — destination.

Translation
All these devotees are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in knowledge of Me I consider to be just like My own self. Being engaged in My transcendental service, he is sure to attain Me, the highest and most perfect goal.

श्लोकः
बहूनां जन्मनामंते ज्ञानवान्मां प्रपद्यते ।
वासुदेवः सर्वमिति स महात्मा सुदुर्लभः ॥ 19 ॥

Meaning
बहूनाम् — many; जन्मनाम् — repeated births and deaths; अंते — after; ज्ञान-वान् — one who is in full knowledge; माम् — unto Me; प्रपद्यते — surrenders; वासुदेवः — the Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa; सर्वम् — everything; इति — thus; सः — that; महा-आत्मा — great soul; सु-दुर्लभः — very rare to see.

Translation
After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.

श्लोकः
कामैस्तैस्तैर्हृतज्ञानाः प्रपद्यंतेऽन्यदेवताः ।
तं तं नियममास्थाय प्रकृत्या नियताः स्वया ॥ 20 ॥

Meaning
कामैः — by desires; तैः तैः — various; हृत — deprived of; ज्ञानाः — knowledge; प्रपद्यंते — surrender; अन्य — to other; देवताः — demigods; तं तम् — corresponding; नियमम् — regulations; आस्थाय — following; प्रकृत्या — by nature; नियताः — controlled; स्वया — by their own.

Translation
Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures.

श्लोकः
यो यो यां यां तनुं भक्तः श्रद्धयार्चितुमिच्छति ।
तस्य तस्याचलां श्रद्धां तामेव विदधाम्यहम् ॥ 21 ॥

Meaning
यः यः — whoever; यां याम् — whichever; तनुम् — form of a demigod; भक्तः — devotee; श्रद्धया — with faith; अर्चितुम् — to worship; इच्चति — desires; तस्य तस्य — to him; अचलाम् — steady; श्रद्धाम् — faith; ताम् — that; एव — surely; विदधामि — give; अहम् — I.

Translation
I am in everyone’s heart as the Supersoul. As soon as one desires to worship some demigod, I make his faith steady so that he can devote himself to that particular deity.

श्लोकः
स तया श्रद्धया युक्तस्तस्याराधनमीहते ।
लभते च ततः कामान्मयैव विहितान्हि तान् ॥ 22 ॥

Meaning
सः — he; तया — with that; श्रद्धया — inspiration; युक्तः — endowed; तस्य — of that demigod; आराधनम् — for the worship; ईहते — he aspires; लभते — obtains; च — and; ततः — from that; कामान् — his desires; मया — by Me; एव — alone; विहितान् — arranged; हि — certainly; तान् — those.

Translation
Endowed with such a faith, he endeavors to worship a particular demigod and obtains his desires. But in actuality these benefits are bestowed by Me alone.

श्लोकः
अंतवत्तु फलं तेषां तद्भ‍वत्यल्पमेधसाम् ।
देवांदेवयजो यांति मद्भ‍क्ता यांति मामपि ॥ 23 ॥

Meaning
अंत-वत् — perishable; तु — but; फलम् — fruit; तेषाम् — their; तत् — that; भवति — becomes; अल्प-मेधसाम् — of those of small intelligence; देवान् — to the demigods; देव-यजः — the worshipers of the demigods; यांति — go; मत् — My; भक्ताः — devotees; यांति — go; माम् — to Me; अपि — also.

Translation
Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet.

श्लोकः
अव्यक्तं व्यक्तिमापन्नं मन्यंते मामबुद्धयः ।
परं भावमजानंतो ममाव्ययमनुत्तमम् ॥ 24 ॥

Meaning
अव्यक्तम् — nonmanifested; व्यक्तिम् — personality; आपन्नम् — achieved; मन्यंते — think; माम् — Me; अबुद्धयः — less intelligent persons; परम् — supreme; भावम् — existence; अजानंतः — without knowing; मम — My; अव्ययम् — imperishable; अनुत्तमम् — the finest.

Translation
Unintelligent men, who do not know Me perfectly, think that I, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa, was impersonal before and have now assumed this personality. Due to their small knowledge, they do not know My higher nature, which is imperishable and supreme.

श्लोकः
नाहं प्रकाशः सर्वस्य योगमायासमावृतः ।
मूढोऽयं नाभिजानाति लोको मामजमव्ययम् ॥ 25 ॥

Meaning
न — nor; अहम् — I; प्रकाशः — manifest; सर्वस्य — to everyone; योग-माया — by internal potency; समावृतः — covered; मूढः — foolish; अयम् — these; न — not; अभिजानाति — can understand; लोकः — persons; माम् — Me; अजम् — unborn; अव्ययम् — inexhaustible.

Translation
I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent. For them I am covered by My internal potency, and therefore they do not know that I am unborn and infallible.

श्लोकः
वेदाहं समतीतानि वर्तमानानि चार्जुन ।
भविष्याणि च भूतानि मां तु वेद न कश्चन ॥ 26 ॥

Meaning
वेद — know; अहम् — I; समतीतानि — completely past; वर्तमानानि — present; च — and; अर्जुन — O Arjuna; भविष्याणि — future; च — also; भूतानि — all living entities; माम् — Me; तु — but; वेद — knows; न — not; कश्चन — anyone.

Translation
O Arjuna, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, I know everything that has happened in the past, all that is happening in the present, and all things that are yet to come. I also know all living entities; but Me no one knows.

श्लोकः
इच्छाद्वेषसमुत्थेन द्वंद्वमोहेन भारत ।
सर्वभूतानि सम्मोहं सर्गे यांति परंतप ॥ 27 ॥

Meaning
इच्चा — desire; द्वेष — and hate; समुत्थेन — arisen from; द्वंद्व — of duality; मोहेन — by the illusion; भारत — O scion of Bharata; सर्व — all; भूतानि — living entities; सम्मोहम् — into delusion; सर्गे — while taking birth; यांति — go; परम्-तप — O conqueror of enemies.

Translation
O scion of Bharata, O conqueror of the foe, all living entities are born into delusion, bewildered by dualities arisen from desire and hate.

श्लोकः
येषां त्वंतगतं पापं जनानां पुण्यकर्मणाम् ।
ते द्वंद्वमोहनिर्मुक्ता भजंते मां दृढव्रताः ॥ 28 ॥

Meaning
येषाम् — whose; तु — but; अंत-गतम् — completely eradicated; पापम् — sin; जनानाम् — of the persons; पुण्य — pious; कर्मणाम् — whose previous activities; ते — they; द्वंद्व — of duality; मोह — delusion; निर्मुक्ताः — free from; भजंते — engage in devotional service; माम् — to Me; दृढ-व्रताः — with determination.

Translation
Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life and whose sinful actions are completely eradicated are freed from the dualities of delusion, and they engage themselves in My service with determination.

श्लोकः
जरामरणमोक्षाय मामाश्रित्य यतंति ये ।
ते ब्रह्म तद्विदुः कृत्स्नमध्यात्मं कर्म चाखिलम् ॥ 29 ॥

Meaning
जरा — from old age; मरण — and death; मोक्षाय — for the purpose of liberation; माम् — Me; आश्रित्य — taking shelter of; यतंति — endeavor; ये — all those who; ते — such persons; ब्रह्म — Brahman; तत् — actually that; विदुः — they know; कृत्स्नम् — everything; अध्यात्मम् — transcendental; कर्म — activities; च — also; अखिलम् — entirely.

Translation
Intelligent persons who are endeavoring for liberation from old age and death take refuge in Me in devotional service. They are actually Brahman because they entirely know everything about transcendental activities.

श्लोकः
साधिभूताधिदैवं मां साधियज्ञं च ये विदुः ।
प्रयाणकालेऽपि च मां ते विदुर्युक्तचेतसः ॥ 30 ॥

Meaning
स-अधिभूत — and the governing principle of the material manifestation; अधिदैवम् — governing all the demigods; माम् — Me; स-अधियज्ञम् — and governing all sacrifices; च — also; ये — those who; विदुः — know; प्रयाण — of death; काले — at the time; अपि — even; च — and; माम् — Me; ते — they; विदुः — know; युक्त-चेतसः — their minds engaged in Me.

Translation
Those in full consciousness of Me, who know Me, the Supreme Lord, to be the governing principle of the material manifestation, of the demigods, and of all methods of sacrifice, can understand and know Me, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even at the time of death.
