சாணக்ய நீதி - சதுர்தோ²த்⁴யாய: ஆயு: கர்ம ச வித்தம் ச வித்³யா நித⁴னமேவ ச । These five: the life-span, the type of work, wealth, learning and the time of one's death are determined while one is in the womb. ஸாது⁴ப்⁴யஸ்தே நிவர்தந்தே புத்ரமித்ராணி பா³ந்த⁴வா: । Offspring, friends and relatives flee from a devotee of the Lord: yet those who follow him bring merit to their families through their devotion. த³ர்ஶனத்⁴யானஸம்ஸ்பர்ஶைர்மத்ஸீ கூர்மீ ச பக்ஷிணீ । Fish, tortoises, and birds bring up their young by means of sight, attention and touch; so do saintly men afford protection to their associates by the same means. யாவத்ஸ்வஸ்தோ² ஹ்யயம் தே³ஹோ யாவன்ம்ருத்யுஶ்ச தூ³ரத: । As long as your body is healthy and under control and death is distant, try to save your soul; when death is immanent what can you do? காமதே⁴னுகு³ணா வித்³யா ஹ்யகாலே ப²லதா³யினீ । Learning is like a cow of desire. It, like her, yields in all seasons. Like a mother, it feeds you on your journey. Therefore learning is a hidden treasure. ஏகோபி கு³ணவான்புத்ரோ நிர்கு³ணேன ஶதேன கிம் । A single son endowed with good qualities is far better than a hundred devoid of them. For the moon, though one, dispels the darkness, which the stars, though numerous, can not. மூர்க²ஶ்சிராயுர்ஜாதோபி தஸ்மாஜ்ஜாதம்ருதோ வர: । A still-born son as superior to a foolish son endowed with a long life. The first causes grief for but a moment while the latter like a blazing fire consumes his parents in grief for life. குக்³ராமவாஸ: குலஹீனஸேவா Residing in a small village devoid of proper living facilities, serving a person born of a low family, unwholesome food, a frowning wife, a foolish son, and a widowed daughter burn the body without fire. கிம் தயா க்ரியதே தே⁴ன்வா யா ந தோ³க்³த்⁴ரீ ந க³ர்பி⁴ணீ । What good is a cow that neither gives milk nor conceives? Similarly, what is the value of the birth of a son if he becomes neither learned nor a pure devotee of the Lord? ஸம்ஸாரதாபத³க்³தா⁴னாம் த்ரயோ விஶ்ராந்திஹேதவ: । When one is consumed by the sorrows of life, three things give him relief: offspring, a wife, and the company of the Lord's devotees. ஸக்ருஜ்ஜல்பந்தி ராஜான: ஸக்ருஜ்ஜல்பந்தி பண்டி³தா: । Kings speak for once, men of learning once, and the daughter is given in marriage once. All these things happen once and only once. ஏகாகினா தபோ த்³வாப்⁴யாம் பட²னம் கா³யனம் த்ரிபி⁴: । Religious austerities should be practiced alone, study by two, and singing by three. A journey should be undertaken by four, agriculture by five, and war by many together. ஸா பா⁴ர்யா யா ஶுசிர்த³க்ஷா ஸா பா⁴ர்யா யா பதிவ்ரதா । She is a true wife who is clean (suci), expert, chaste, pleasing to the husband, and truthful. அபுத்ரஸ்ய க்³ருஹம் ஶூன்யம் தி³ஶ: ஶூன்யாஸ்த்வபா³ந்த⁴வா: । The house of a childless person is a void, all directions are void to one who has no relatives, the heart of a fool is also void, but to a poverty stricken man all is void. அனப்⁴யாஸே விஷம் ஶாஸ்த்ரமஜீர்ணே போ⁴ஜனம் விஷம் । Scriptural lessons not put into practice are poison; a meal is poison to him who suffers from indigestion; a social gathering is poison to a poverty stricken person; and a young wife is poison to an aged man. த்யஜேத்³த⁴ர்மம் த³யாஹீனம் வித்³யாஹீனம் கு³ரும் த்யஜேத் । That man who is without religion and mercy should be rejected. A guru without spiritual knowledge should be rejected. The wife with an offensive face should be given up, and so should relatives who are without affection. அத்⁴வா ஜரா தே³ஹவதாம் பர்வதானாம் ஜலம் ஜரா । Constant travel brings old age upon a man; a horse becomes old by being constantly tied up; lack of sexual contact with her husband brings old age upon a woman; and garments become old through being left in the sun. க: கால: கானி மித்ராணி கோ தே³ஶ: கௌ வ்யயாக³மௌ । Consider again and again the following: the right time, the right friends, the right place, the right means of income, the right ways of spending, and from whom you derive your power. அக்³னிர்தே³வோ த்³விஜாதீனாம் முனீனாம் ஹ்ருதி³ தை³வதம் । For the twice-born the fire (Agni) is a representative of God. The Supreme Lord resides in the heart of His devotees. Those of average intelligence (alpa-buddhi or kanista-adhikari) see God only in His sri- murti, but those of broad vision see the Supreme Lord everywhere.
