Even before I saw the light of this world,
through my Karmic sins from previous births,
I was created inside my motherâs womb,
And placed between urine, excreta and heat,
And suffered a lot by the heat and smell.
Who can describe the pain that afflicts the child in its motherâs womb?
Therefore, O Siva! O Mahadeva! O Sambhu!

In childhood my suffering never came to an end;
During early childhood, I rolled in dirt,
And with a dirty body,
I was interested only in drinking milk from breasts.
Insects like fly also bit me often.
Which I was not able to prevent,
And was also attacked by many illness great,
And never did I find time to think of thee oh, Lord Sankara!

In youth, I was bitten by the five venomous snakes of senses
- sound, sight, taste, touch, and smell,
in vulnerable spots,
And hence lost I, my wisdom,
And began concentrating on pleasures
Of sons, riches and a youthful wife,
Alas! My heart, bereft of the thought of Siva,
Was filled with arrogance and pride,
Therefore, O Siva! O Mahadeva! O Sambhu!

Now, as I was passing through ripe old age,
My five senses got weakened,
My wisdom lost its memory,
My body got weakened,
Due to god given sin, sickness and pain never leaving it,

Not even once have I finished my bath before sunrise and brought from the Ganges
Water to bathe Thy holy image;
Never, from the deep woods, have I brought the sacred vilwa leaves for Thy worship;
Nor have I gathered full-blown lotuses from the lakes,
Nor ever arranged the lights and the incense for worshipping Thee.

Unable I am to observe the complex rules of Dharma daily,
Unable I am to follow the rules of Veda as told by Brahmins,
Unable I am to know Dharma by listening to Vedas and meditating,

Oh, Mind, What is the use of charity,
What is the use of riches,

By getting a kingdom what is the use,

For all these can be destroyed in a second,

And for the sake of redemption of the soul,
Meditate on the consort of Parvathi,

The meaning of hearing the scriptures from the guru and reasoning on his instruction;
How then can I speak of reflecting on Truth without interruption?

I salute the self-effulgent Guru of the gods, the Lord of Uma;

White appear Thy matted locks, covered with the foam of the Ganges;
