ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಜಾಮಿಲೋ ನಾಮ ಮಹೀಸುರಃ ಪುರಾ
ಚರನ್ ವಿಭೋ ಧರ್ಮಪಥಾನ್ ಗೃಹಾಶ್ರಮೀ ।
ಗುರೋರ್ಗಿರಾ ಕಾನನಮೇತ್ಯ ದೃಷ್ಟವಾನ್
ಸುಧೃಷ್ಟಶೀಲಾಂ ಕುಲಟಾಂ ಮದಾಕುಲಾಮ್ ॥1॥

Meaning
ಅಜಾಮಿಲಃ ನಾಮ ಮಹೀಸುರಃ - The Braahmin by the name Ajaamil; ಪುರಾ - long ago; ಚರನ್ ವಿಭೋ ಧರ್ಮಪಥಾನ್ - O Lord! Who was leading a righteous life; ಗೃಹಾಶ್ರಮೀ - (and) who was a householder; ಗುರೋಃ-ಗಿರಾ - at the request of his father; ಕಾನನಂ-ಏತ್ಯ - going to the forest; ದೃಷ್ಟವಾನ್ - saw; ಸುಧೃಷ್ಟ್ಶೀಲಾಂ - an immodest; ಕುಲಟಾಂ - (and) immoral woman; ಮದಾಕುಲಾಂ - given to drinking;

Translation
O Lord! Long ago there was a Braahmin householder named Ajaamil who led a virtuous life. He went to the forest (for collecting sacrificial fuel) at his father's request. There he met an immoral, immodest woman who was given to drinking.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸ್ವತಃ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತೋಽಪಿ ತದಾಹೃತಾಶಯಃ
ಸ್ವಧರ್ಮಮುತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ ತಯಾ ಸಮಾರಮನ್ ।
ಅಧರ್ಮಕಾರೀ ದಶಮೀ ಭವನ್ ಪುನ-
ರ್ದಧೌ ಭವನ್ನಾಮಯುತೇ ಸುತೇ ರತಿಮ್ ॥2॥

Meaning
ಸ್ವತಃ ಪ್ರಶಾಂತಃ-ಅಪಿ - self controlled, though; ತತ್-ಆಹೃತ-ಆಶಯಃ - his mind being attracted by her; ಸ್ವ-ಧರ್ಮಂ-ಉತ್ಸೃಜ್ಯ - all his duties, giving up; ತಯಾ ಸಮಾರಮನ್ - her (company) enjoying; ಅಧರ್ಮಕಾರೀ - unrighteous; ದಶಮೀ ಭವನ್ ಪುನಃ- - very old becoming, then; ದಧೌ - gave; ಭವತ್-ನಾಮ-ಯುತೇ ಸುತೇ - who bore Thy name, to his son; ರತಿಂ - attachment;

Translation
Though by nature a man of self control his mind was attracted to her. He gave up all his duties and revelling in her company led a sinful life. As he became old, he became very much attached to his son who bore Thy name - Naaraayana.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸ ಮೃತ್ಯುಕಾಲೇ ಯಮರಾಜಕಿಂಕರಾನ್
ಭಯಂಕರಾಂಸ್ತ್ರೀನಭಿಲಕ್ಷಯನ್ ಭಿಯಾ ।
ಪುರಾ ಮನಾಕ್ ತ್ವತ್ಸ್ಮೃತಿವಾಸನಾಬಲಾತ್
ಜುಹಾವ ನಾರಾಯಣನಾಮಕಂ ಸುತಮ್ ॥3॥

Meaning
ಸ ಮೃತ್ಯುಕಾಲೇ - he, at death time; ಯಮರಾಜ-ಕಿಂಕರಾನ್ - the death god's messengers; ಭಯಂಕರಾನ್-ತ್ರೀನ್- - very fierce, three (of them); ಅಭಿಲಕ್ಷಯನ್ - seeing (before him); ಭಿಯಾ - in fear; ಪುರಾ ಮನಾಕ್ - long ago, certainly; ತ್ವತ್-ಸ್ಮೃತಿ-ವಾಸನಾ-ಬಲಾತ್ - a (faint) memory of Thee, by its (Thy memory's) strength; ಜುಹಾವ - called; ನಾರಾಯಣ-ನಾಮಕಂ ಸುತಂ - Naaraayana named his son;

Translation
At the time of death, he saw before him three fierce looking emissaries of Yama - the god of death. He called out in fright the name of his son Naaraayana, induced by the strength of the memory of his past devotion to Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ದುರಾಶಯಸ್ಯಾಪಿ ತದಾತ್ವನಿರ್ಗತ-
ತ್ವದೀಯನಾಮಾಕ್ಷರಮಾತ್ರವೈಭವಾತ್ ।
ಪುರೋಽಭಿಪೇತುರ್ಭವದೀಯಪಾರ್ಷದಾಃ
ಚತುರ್ಭುಜಾಃ ಪೀತಪಟಾ ಮನೋರಮಾಃ ॥4॥

Meaning
ದುರಾಶಯಸ್ಯ-ಅಪಿ ತದಾ-ತು - then even though he was evil minded; ಅನಿರ್ಗತ ತ್ವದೀಯ- - emerging, of Thy; ನಾಮ-ಅಕ್ಷರ-ಮಾತ್ರ-ವೈಭವಾತ್ - name's letters,solely by, its glory; ಪುರಃ-ಅಭಿಪೇತುಃ- - before him appeared; ಭವದೀಯ ಪಾರ್ಷದಾಃ - Thy emissaries; ಚತುರ್ಭುಜಾಃ ಪೀತಪಟಾಃ ಮನೋರಮಾಃ - having four arms, wearing yellow garments with lovely appearance;

Translation
In spite of his evil nature, by the glory of the letters of Thy name uttered by him, there appeared before him, Thy emissaries.They had four arms and were wearing yellow robes and were of enchanting appearance.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಮುಂ ಚ ಸಂಪಾಶ್ಯ ವಿಕರ್ಷತೋ ಭಟಾನ್
ವಿಮುಂಚತೇತ್ಯಾರುರುಧುರ್ಬಲಾದಮೀ ।
ನಿವಾರಿತಾಸ್ತೇ ಚ ಭವಜ್ಜನೈಸ್ತದಾ
ತದೀಯಪಾಪಂ ನಿಖಿಲಂ ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ ॥5॥

Meaning
ಅಮುಂ ಚ ಸಂಪಾಶ್ಯ - him (Ajaamila) tying up with ropes; ವಿಕರ್ಷತಃ ಭಟಾನ್ - (and) dragging, to the messengers (of Yama); ವಿಮುಂಚತ-ಇತಿ- - "Release him" thus (saying); ಆರುರುಧುಃ-ಬಲಾತ್-ಅಮೀ - (were) stopped by force, they; ನಿವಾರಿತಾಃ-ತೇ ಚ ಭವತ್-ಜನೈಃ- - and were obstructed by Thy emissaries; ತದಾ ತದೀಯ-ಪಾಪಂ ನಿಖಿಲಂ - then, all his sins; ನ್ಯವೇದಯನ್ - (they) narrated;

Translation
Seeing Ajaamil tied up with ropes and being dragged by the messengers of Yama, they were obstructed by Thy emissaries by force and were stopped to do so. Then the emissaries of Yama narrate all his sins.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಭವಂತು ಪಾಪಾನಿ ಕಥಂ ತು ನಿಷ್ಕೃತೇ
ಕೃತೇಽಪಿ ಭೋ ದಂಡನಮಸ್ತಿ ಪಂಡಿತಾಃ ।
ನ ನಿಷ್ಕೃತಿಃ ಕಿಂ ವಿದಿತಾ ಭವಾದೃಶಾ-
ಮಿತಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ ತ್ವತ್ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ ॥6॥

Meaning
ಭವಂತು ಪಾಪಾನಿ - let there be sins; ಕಥಂ ತು - how is it; ನಿಷ್ಕೃತೇ ಕೃತೇ-ಅಪಿ - atonements have been made एवेन्; ಭೋ ದಂಡನಂ-ಅಸ್ತಿ ಪಂಡಿತಾಃ - are there punishments, O Learned Ones!; ನ ನಿಷ್ಕೃತಿ ಕಿಂ ವಿದಿತಾ - is atonement not known; ಭವದೃಶಾಂ-ಇತಿ - to persons like you? Thus; ಪ್ರಭೋ - O Lord; ತ್ವತ್-ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ - Thy emissaries spoke;

Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told them that even if there were sins, how was it that there was punishment when atonement had been made. Did people like them who were learned, not know what atonement was?

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಶ್ರುತಿಸ್ಮೃತಿಭ್ಯಾಂ ವಿಹಿತಾ ವ್ರತಾದಯಃ
ಪುನಂತಿ ಪಾಪಂ ನ ಲುನಂತಿ ವಾಸನಾಮ್ ।
ಅನಂತಸೇವಾ ತು ನಿಕೃಂತತಿ ದ್ವಯೀ-
ಮಿತಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ ತ್ವತ್ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ ॥7॥

Meaning
ಶ್ರುತಿ-ಸ್ಮೃತಿಭ್ಯಾಂ - in the Srutis and Smritis; ವಿಹಿತಾಃ ವ್ರತಾದಯಃ - are laid down, the vows etc.,; ಪುನಂತಿ ಪಾಪಂ - cleanse one of sins; ನ ಲುನಂತಿ ವಾಸನಾಂ - but do not destroy the tendency; ಅನಂತ-ಸೇವಾ ತು - service to the Lord however,; ನಿಕೃಂತತಿ ದ್ವಯೀಂ-ಇತಿ - destroys both, thus; ಪ್ರಭೋ - O Lord!; ತ್ವತ್-ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ - Thy emissaries did speak;

Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told them that in the Srutis and Smritis as per the vows which are laid down, they absolve a person from sins, but do not curb the sinful tendency. Whereas, the service of the Lord! Destroys both - the sins and the sinful tendencies.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅನೇನ ಭೋ ಜನ್ಮಸಹಸ್ರಕೋಟಿಭಿಃ
ಕೃತೇಷು ಪಾಪೇಷ್ವಪಿ ನಿಷ್ಕೃತಿಃ ಕೃತಾ ।
ಯದಗ್ರಹೀನ್ನಾಮ ಭಯಾಕುಲೋ ಹರೇ-
ರಿತಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ ತ್ವತ್ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ ॥8॥

Meaning
ಅನೇನ ಭೋ - by him (Ajaamil) O! You (messengers of Yama); ಜನ್ಮ-ಸಹಸ್ರ-ಕೋಟಿಭಿಃ - in innumerable lives; ಕೃತೇಷು ಪಾಪೇಷು-ಅಪಿ - if he has committed sins also; ನಿಷ್ಕೃತಿಃ ಕೃತಾ - atonement has been made; ಯತ್-ಅಗ್ರಹೀತ್-ನಾಮ - because he took (uttered) the name; ಭಯ-ಆಕುಲಃ ಹರೇಃ-ಇತಿ - overcome by fear, of Hari, thus; ಪ್ರಭೋ - O Lord!; ತ್ವತ್-ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ - Thy emissaries did speak;

Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told the messengers of Yama that though overcome by fear, Ajaamil had uttered the Name of Hari. By that alone he had atoned for all the sins committed by him in innumerable lives.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನೃಣಾಮಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾಪಿ ಮುಕುಂದಕೀರ್ತನಂ
ದಹತ್ಯಘೌಘಾನ್ ಮಹಿಮಾಸ್ಯ ತಾದೃಶಃ ।
ಯಥಾಗ್ನಿರೇಧಾಂಸಿ ಯಥೌಷಧಂ ಗದಾ -
ನಿತಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ ತ್ವತ್ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ ॥9॥

Meaning
ನೃಣಾಂ-ಅಬುದ್ಧ್ಯಾ-ಅಪಿ - of human beings, unknowingly even,; ಮುಕುಂದ್-ಕೀರ್ತನಂ - the name of Mukund is chanted; ದಹತಿ-ಅಘ-ಔಘಾನ್ - burns up all sins; ಮಹಿಮಾ-ಅಸ್ಯ ತಾದೃಶಃ - its glory is such; ಯಥಾ-ಅಗ್ನಿಃ-ಏಧಾಂಸಿ - like fire (burning) fuel; ಯಥಾ-ಔಷಧಂ ಗದಾನ್ ಇತಿ - like medicine (curing) disease; ಪ್ರಭೋ - O Lord! Thus; ತ್ವತ್-ಪುರುಷಾ ಬಭಾಷಿರೇ - Thy emissaries did speak;

Translation
O Lord! Thy emissaries told them that even if the chanting of The Name of Mukund is done unknowingly, by the human beings, it burns up all their sins. Its glory is like that of fire burning the fuel and like the medicine curing the disease.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಇತೀರಿತೈರ್ಯಾಮ್ಯಭಟೈರಪಾಸೃತೇ
ಭವದ್ಭಟಾನಾಂ ಚ ಗಣೇ ತಿರೋಹಿತೇ ।
ಭವತ್ಸ್ಮೃತಿಂ ಕಂಚನ ಕಾಲಮಾಚರನ್
ಭವತ್ಪದಂ ಪ್ರಾಪಿ ಭವದ್ಭಟೈರಸೌ ॥10॥

Meaning
ಇತಿ-ಈರಿತೈಃ- - thus being told; ಯಾಮ್ಯ-ಭಟೈಃ- - the messengers of Yama; ಅಪಾಸೃತೇ - having left; ಭವತ್-ಭಟಾನಾಂ ಚ - and Thy emissaries; ಗಣೇ ತಿರೋಹಿತೇ - in a group having disappeared; ಭವತ್-ಸ್ಮೃತಿಂ - having Thy remembrance; ಕಂಚನ ಕಾಲಂ- - for some time; ಆಚರನ್ - and worshipping Thee; ಭವತ್-ಪದಂ ಪ್ರಾಪಿ - Thy abode attaining; ಭವತ್-ಭಟೈಃ-ಅಸೌ - this (Ajaamil) (led by) Thy emissaries;

Translation
The messengers of Yama left when they were told thus. The group of Thy emissaries also disappeared. Ajaamil remembered and worshipped Thee for some time and then attained Thy abode led by Thy emissaries.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸ್ವಕಿಂಕರಾವೇದನಶಂಕಿತೋ ಯಮ-
ಸ್ತ್ವದಂಘ್ರಿಭಕ್ತೇಷು ನ ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮಿತಿ ।
ಸ್ವಕೀಯಭೃತ್ಯಾನಶಿಶಿಕ್ಷದುಚ್ಚಕೈಃ
ಸ ದೇವ ವಾತಾಲಯನಾಥ ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಮ್ ॥11॥

Meaning
ಸ್ವ-ಕಿಂಕರ-ಆವೇದನ- - his messengers reprting1`; ಶಂಕಿತಃ ಯಮಃ- - the much concerned Yama; ತ್ವತ್-ಅಂಘ್ರಿ-ಭಕ್ತೇಷು - to the devotees of Thy feet; ನ ಗಮ್ಯತಾಂ-ಇತಿ - do not go, thus; ಸ್ವಕೀಯ-ಭೃತ್ಯಾನ್- - his own messengers; ಅಶಿಶಿಕ್ಷತ್-ಉಚ್ಚಕೈಃ - instructed strictly; ಸ ದೇವ ವಾತಾಲಯನಾಥ - Thou (who are such) Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಂ - protect me;

Translation
Yama was very much concerned at the report of his messengers. He strictly instructed them not to go to the devotees of Thy feet. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are such, protect me.
