ಪ್ರದ್ಯುಮ್ನೋ ರೌಕ್ಮಿಣೇಯಃ ಸ ಖಲು ತವ ಕಲಾ ಶಂಬರೇಣಾಹೃತಸ್ತಂ
ಹತ್ವಾ ರತ್ಯಾ ಸಹಾಪ್ತೋ ನಿಜಪುರಮಹರದ್ರುಕ್ಮಿಕನ್ಯಾಂ ಚ ಧನ್ಯಾಮ್ ।
ತತ್ಪುತ್ರೋಽಥಾನಿರುದ್ಧೋ ಗುಣನಿಧಿರವಹದ್ರೋಚನಾಂ ರುಕ್ಮಿಪೌತ್ರೀಂ
ತತ್ರೋದ್ವಾಹೇ ಗತಸ್ತ್ವಂ ನ್ಯವಧಿ ಮುಸಲಿನಾ ರುಕ್ಮ್ಯಪಿ ದ್ಯೂತವೈರಾತ್ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಪ್ರದ್ಯುಮ್ನಃ ರೌಕ್ಮಿಣೇಯಃ - Pradyumna, Rukmini's son; ಸ ಖಲು ತವ ಕಲಾ - he indeed Thy part incarnation; ಶಂಬರೇಣ-ಆಹೃತಃ- - by Shambara was kidnapped; ತಂ ಹತ್ವಾ - him killing; ರತ್ಯಾ ಸಹ-ಆಪ್ತಃ - with Rati returned; ನಿಜಪುರಂ- - to his own city; ಅಹರತ್-ರುಕ್ಮಿ-ಕನ್ಯಾಂ - took away Rukmi's daughter; ಚ ಧನ್ಯಾಂ - and she the fortunate one; ತತ್-ಪುತ್ರಃ-ಅಥ- - his son then; ಅನಿರುದ್ಧಃ ಗುಣನಿಧಿಃ- - Aniruddha, very virtuous; ಅವಹತ್-ರೋಚನಾಂ - married Rochanaa; ರುಕ್ಮಿ ಪೌತ್ರೀಂ - Rukmi's grand daughter; ತತ್ರ-ಉದ್ವಾಹೇ ಗತಃ-ತ್ವಂ - there, in that wedding Thou went; ನ್ಯವಧಿ ಮುಸಲಿನಾ - was killed by Balaraam; ರುಕ್ಮಿ-ಅಪಿ - Rukmi also; ದ್ಯೂತ-ವೈರಾತ್ - in the game of dice animosity;
Translation
Pradyumna, Rukmini's son was an aspect of Thy essence and was kidnapped by Shambara at birth. Later Pradyumna killed Shambara and returned to his city of Dwaarikaa with his wife Rati. He also carried away the fortunate daughter of Rukmi and married her. His virtuous son Aniruddha married Rochanaa, the grand daughter of Rukmi. Thou had gone to that wedding. During a game of dice, when a quarrel arose, Rukmi was killed by Balaraam.

ಬಾಣಸ್ಯ ಸಾ ಬಲಿಸುತಸ್ಯ ಸಹಸ್ರಬಾಹೋ-
ರ್ಮಾಹೇಶ್ವರಸ್ಯ ಮಹಿತಾ ದುಹಿತಾ ಕಿಲೋಷಾ ।
ತ್ವತ್ಪೌತ್ರಮೇನಮನಿರುದ್ಧಮದೃಷ್ಟಪೂರ್ವಂ
ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇಽನುಭೂಯ ಭಗವನ್ ವಿರಹಾತುರಾಽಭೂತ್ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಬಾಣಸ್ಯ ಸಾ - of Baana, she; ಬಲಿ-ಸುತಸ್ಯ - of Bali's son (Baan); ಸಹಸ್ರ-ಬಾಹೋಃ- - of a thousand arms; ಮಾಹೇಶ್ವರಸ್ಯ - devotee of Shiva; ಮಹಿತಾ ದುಹಿತಾ - the esteemed daughter; ಕಿಲ-ಉಷಾ - indeed Ushaa; ತ್ವತ್-ಪೌತ್ರಂ-ಏನಂ- - Thy grandson this; ಅನಿರುದ್ಧಂ-ಅದೃಷ್ಟ-ಪೂರ್ವಂ - Aniruddha not seen before; ಸ್ವಪ್ನೇ-ಅನುಭೂಯ - in the dream meeting; ಭಗವನ್ - O Lord!; ವಿರಹ-ಆತುರಾ-ಅಭೂತ್ - separation pangs suffered;
Translation
Bali's son Baana was a devotee of Shiva and had a thousand arms. His esteemed daughter Ushaa had not seen Thy grandson Aniruddha before. She met him in her dreams and suffered pangs of separation from him.

ಯೋಗಿನ್ಯತೀವ ಕುಶಲಾ ಖಲು ಚಿತ್ರಲೇಖಾ
ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಸಖೀ ವಿಲಿಖತೀ ತರುಣಾನಶೇಷಾನ್ ।
ತತ್ರಾನಿರುದ್ಧಮುಷಯಾ ವಿದಿತಂ ನಿಶಾಯಾ-
ಮಾನೇಷ್ಟ ಯೋಗಬಲತೋ ಭವತೋ ನಿಕೇತಾತ್ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಯೋಗಿನೀ- - a woman with yogic powers; ಅತೀವ ಕುಶಲಾ - and very skilled; ಖಲು ಚಿತ್ರಲೇಖಾ - indeed Chitralekhaa; ತಸ್ಯಾಃ ಸಖಿ - her (Ushaa's) friend; ವಿಲಿಖತೀ - draws (pictures); ತರುಣಾನ್-ಅಶೇಷಾನ್ - of young men all; ತತ್ರ-ಅನಿರುದ್ಧಂ- - from there, Aniruddha; ಉಷಯಾ ವಿದಿತಂ - by Ushaa was recognized; ನಿಶಾಯಾಂ-ಆನೇಷ್ಟ - during the night, brought (Chitralekhaa); ಯೋಗ-ಬಲತಃ - by yogic powers; ಭವತಃ ನಿಕೇತಾತ್ - from Thy palace;
Translation
Ushaa's friend Chitralekhaa had yogic powers and was very skilled in making drawings. She drew portraits of all the young men. Ushaa picked up Aniruddha's portrait whom she recognized. Chitralekhaa with her yogic powers then brought Aniruddha from Thy palace during the night.

ಕನ್ಯಾಪುರೇ ದಯಿತಯಾ ಸುಖಮಾರಮಂತಂ
ಚೈನಂ ಕಥಂಚನ ಬಬಂಧುಷಿ ಶರ್ವಬಂಧೌ ।
ಶ್ರೀನಾರದೋಕ್ತತದುದಂತದುರಂತರೋಷೈ-
ಸ್ತ್ವಂ ತಸ್ಯ ಶೋಣಿತಪುರಂ ಯದುಭಿರ್ನ್ಯರುಂಧಾಃ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಕನ್ಯಾ-ಪುರೇ - in the virgin's chambers; ದಯಿತಯಾ - with his beloved (Ushaa); ಸುಖಂ-ಆರಮಂತಂ - happily sporting; ಚ-ಏನಂ ಕಥಂಚನ - and him somehow; ಬಬಂಧುಷಿ - tied up; ಶರ್ವಬಂಧೌ - Shiva's devotee; ಶ್ರೀ-ನಾರದ-ಉಕ್ತ- - by Shree Naarada told; ತತ್-ಉದಂತ- - that news; ದುರಂತಃ-ರೋಷೈಃ-ತ್ವಂ - (in) unbounded anger Thou; ತಸ್ಯ ಶೋಣಿತಪುರಂ - his (city) Shonitpura; ಯದುಭಿಃ-ನ್ಯರುಂಧಾಃ - with Yadus besieged;
Translation
In the virgin's chamber, Aniruddha sported happily with his beloved Ushaa. Baana, Shivaa's devotee came to know this and tied him up. This news was given to Thee by Shree Naarad. In a fit of unbounded anger, Thou besieged Baana's city Shonitpura with the help of the Yaadavas.

ಪುರೀಪಾಲಶ್ಶೈಲಪ್ರಿಯದುಹಿತೃನಾಥೋಽಸ್ಯ ಭಗವಾನ್

Meaning
ಪುರೀಪಾಲಃ- - the protector of the city; ಶೈಲ-ಪ್ರಿಯ-ದುಹಿತೃ-ನಾಥಃ-ಅಸ್ಯ - the mountain's dear daughter's consort, his; ಭಗವಾನ್ - Lord Shiva; ಸಮಂ ಭೂತವ್ರಾತೈಃ- - with the Bhoota army; ಯದು-ಬಲಂ-ಅಶಂಕಂ - the Yaadava army fearlessly; ನಿರುರುಧೇ - blocked; ಮಹಾಪ್ರಾಣಃ ಬಾಣಃ - the mighty Baana; ಝಟಿತಿ - quickly; ಯುಯುಧಾನೇನ ಯುಯುಧೇ - with Yuyudhaana fought; ಗುಹಃ ಪ್ರದ್ಯುಮ್ನೇನ - Guha with Pradyumna; ತ್ವಂ-ಅಪಿ - Thou too; ಪುರಹಂತ್ರಾ ಜಘಟಿಷೇ - (with) Tripura destroyer Shiva;
Translation
The consort of the mountain's dear daughter, Shiva, being the protector of the city, with his army of the Bhootas blocked the army of the Yadavas, fearlessly. The mighty Baana quickly gave fight to Yuyudhaana, Guha to Pradyumna and Thou to Shiva, the destroyer of the Puras.

ನಿರುದ್ಧಾಶೇಷಾಸ್ತ್ರೇ ಮುಮುಹುಷಿ ತವಾಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಗಿರಿಶೇ
ದ್ರುತಾ ಭೂತಾ ಭೀತಾಃ ಪ್ರಮಥಕುಲವೀರಾಃ ಪ್ರಮಥಿತಾಃ ।
ಪರಾಸ್ಕಂದ್ತ್ ಸ್ಕಂದಃ ಕುಸುಮಶರಬಾಣೈಶ್ಚ ಸಚಿವಃ
ಸ ಕುಂಭಾಂಡೋ ಭಾಂಡಂ ನವಮಿವ ಬಲೇನಾಶು ಬಿಭಿದೇ ॥6॥
Meaning
ನಿರುದ್ಧ-ಅಶೇಷ-ಅಸ್ತ್ರೇ - resisted were all the weapons; ಮುಮುಹುಷಿ - became unconscious; ತವ-ಅಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ ಗಿರಿಶೇ - by Thy weapon, Shiva; ದ್ರುತಾಃ-ಭೂತಾಃ-ಭೀತಾಃ - fled the Bhootas in fear; ಪ್ರಮಥ-ಕುಲ-ವೀರಾಃ - of the Pramatha dynasty, the leader; ಪ್ರಮಥಿತಾಃ - were crushed; ಪರಾಸ್ಕಂದತ್ ಸ್ಕಂದಃ - was defeated Skanda (guha); ಕುಸುಮ-ಶರ-ಬಾಣೈಃ-ಚ - by the flower bows's arrows of Pradyumna and; ಸಚಿವಃ ಸ ಕುಂಭಾಂಡಃ - the minister of Baana, that Kumbhaanda; ಭಾಂಡಂ ನವಂ-ಇವ - a pot new as though; ಬಲೇನ-ಆಶು ಬಿಭಿದೇ - by Balaram was soon smashed;
Translation
All Shiva's weapons were resisted and he was rendered unconscious by Thy weapon (Mohanaastra). All the army of the Bhootas fled in fear and the leaders of the Pramathas were crushed. Skanda was defeated, by the flower arrows of Pradyumna's bow. The minister of Baana, Kumbhaanda was soon smashed by Balaraam like a new pot.

ಚಾಪಾನಾಂ ಪಂಚಶತ್ಯಾ ಪ್ರಸಭಮುಪಗತೇ ಛಿನ್ನಚಾಪೇಽಥ ಬಾಣೇ
ವ್ಯರ್ಥೇ ಯಾತೇ ಸಮೇತೋ ಜ್ವರಪತಿರಶನೈರಜ್ವರಿ ತ್ವಜ್ಜ್ವರೇಣ ।
ಜ್ಞಾನೀ ಸ್ತುತ್ವಾಽಥ ದತ್ವಾ ತವ ಚರಿತಜುಷಾಂ ವಿಜ್ವರಂ ಸ ಜ್ವರೋಽಗಾತ್
ಪ್ರಾಯೋಽಂತರ್ಜ್ಞಾನವಂತೋಽಪಿ ಚ ಬಹುತಮಸಾ ರೌದ್ರಚೇಷ್ಟಾ ಹಿ ರೌದ್ರಾಃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಚಾಪಾನಾಂ ಪಂಚಶತ್ಯಾ - by bows five hundred; ಪ್ರಸಭಂ-ಉಪಗತೇ - fiercely attacking; ಛಿನ್ನ-ಚಾಪೇ-ಅಥ ಬಾಣೇ - breaking of the bows then of Baana; ವ್ಯರ್ಥೇ ಯಾತಃ - fruitlessly returning; ಸಮೇತಃ ಜ್ವರಪತಿಃ- - came the head of all fevers the Shaiva fever; ಅಶನೈಃ-ಅಜ್ವರಿ - immediately tormented; ತ್ವತ್-ಜ್ವರೇಣ - by Thy (the Vaishnava fever); ಜ್ಞಾನೀ ಸ್ತುತ್ವಾ-ಅಥ - the enlightened (Shaiva fever) praising then; ದತ್ವಾ ತವ ಚರಿತಜುಷಾಂ - giving to the (devotees) admirers of Thy excellences; ವಿಜ್ವರಂ ಸ ಜ್ವರಃ-ಅಗಾತ್ - freedom, that (Shaiva) fever went away; ಪ್ರಾಯಃ-ಅಂತಃ-ಜ್ಞಾನ್ವಂತಃ-ಅಪಿ - often inner knowledge having even; ಚ ಬಹು-ತಮಸಾ - and by much of Tamas; ರೌದ್ರ-ಚೇಷ್ಟಾ ಹಿ ರೌದ್ರಾಃ - ferociously act indeed the Rudras;
Translation
Baana came attacking ferociously with 500 bows and arrows, but his weapons being severed he had to retreat. Thereupon, the head of all the obsession, the Shaiva obsession came to the forefront but was immediately put out by the Vaishnava obsession. The enlightened Shaivas gave freedom to all those that sung Thy excellences and went away praising Thee. Often the enlightened Rudras also act ferociously, being predominated by Tamas.

ಬಾಣಂ ನಾನಾಯುಧೋಗ್ರಂ ಪುನರಭಿಪತಿತಂ ದರ್ಪದೋಷಾದ್ವಿತನ್ವನ್

ತದ್ವಾಚಾ ಶಿಷ್ಟಬಾಹುದ್ವಿತಯಮುಭಯತೋ ನಿರ್ಭಯಂ ತತ್ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ತಂ
ಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತದ್ದತ್ತಮಾನೋ ನಿಜಪುರಮಗಮಃ ಸಾನಿರುದ್ಧಃ ಸಹೋಷಃ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಬಾಣಂ ನಾನಾ-ಆಯುಧ-ಉಗ್ರಂ - Baana with various weapons more ferocious; ಪುನಃ-ಅಭಿಪತಿತಂ - again having attacked; ದರ್ಪ-ದೋಷಾತ್-ವಿತನ್ವನ್ - due to the vice of arrogance, made him; ನಿರ್ಲೂನ-ಅಶೇಷ-ದೋಷಂ - by cutting off all his vices (arms); ಸಪದಿ ಬುಬುಧುಷಾ - soon (a) realized (person); ಶಂಕರೇಣ-ಉಪಗೀತಃ - by Shankara and praised (Thee); ತತ್-ವಾಚಾ - by his request; ಶಿಷ್ಟ-ಬಾಹು-ದ್ವಿತಯಂ-ಉಭಯತಃ - left with arms two on both sides; ನಿರ್ಭಯಂ ತತ್-ಪ್ರಿಯಂ ತಂ - unafraid his devotee him; ಮುಕ್ತ್ವಾ - letting off; ತತ್-ದತ್ತ-ಮಾನಃ - by him giving honour; ನಿಜ-ಪುರಂ-ಅಗಮಃ - to Thy own city returned; ಸಾನಿರುದ್ಧ ಸಹೋಷಃ - with Aniruddha (and) with Ushaa;
Translation
Baana again attacked ferociously full of arrogance with his many various weapons. Thou made him devoid of all vice and his many arms by cutting them off. Shankara soon realised Thy greatness and praised Thee and on his request Thou let off Baana with his two arms on both sides. Baana who was then spared from the fear of death honoured Thee. Thou then returned to Thy city Dwaarikaa with Aniruddha and Ushaa.

ಮುಹುಸ್ತಾವಚ್ಛಕ್ರಂ ವರುಣಮಜಯೋ ನಂದಹರಣೇ
ಯಮಂ ಬಾಲಾನೀತೌ ದವದಹನಪಾನೇಽನಿಲಸಖಮ್ ।
ವಿಧಿಂ ವತ್ಸಸ್ತೇಯೇ ಗಿರಿಶಮಿಹ ಬಾಣಸ್ಯ ಸಮರೇ
ವಿಭೋ ವಿಶ್ವೋತ್ಕರ್ಷೀ ತದಯಮವತಾರೋ ಜಯತಿ ತೇ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಮುಹುಃ-ತಾವತ್-ಶಕ್ರಂ - again and again then Indra; ವರುಣಂ-ಅಜಯಃ - Varuna defeated; ನಂದ-ಹರಣೇ - when he had kidnapped Nanda Gopa; ಯಮಂ ಬಾಲ-ಆನೀತೌ - Yama when he had taken away the (Guru's) children; ದವ-ದಹನ-ಪಾನೇ- - the forest fire by drinking; ಅನಿಲ-ಸಖಂ - wind's friend Agni; ವಿಧಿಂ ವತ್ಸ-ಸ್ತೇಯೇ - Brahmaa when the calves were stolen; ಗಿರಿಶಂ-ಇಹ್ - Shiva here; ಬಾಣಸ್ಯ ಸಮರೇ - in Baana's battle; ವಿಭೋ - O Lord!; ವಿಶ್ವ-ಉತ್ಕರ್ಷೀ - all excelling; ತತ್-ಅಯಂ-ಅವತಾರಃ - therefore this incarnation (of Thee) (as Krishna); ಜಯತಿ ತೇ - excels Thine;
Translation
Thou indeed defeated Indra again and again, Varuna was defeated when he kidnapped Nandagopa and Yama was defeated by Thee when he took away the children of Thy Guru. Agni, Vayu's friend was overcome when Thou drank it during the forest fire and Brahmaa was defeated when he stole away the calves. Shiva was defeated here in Baana's battle. Therefore, O Lord! this incarnation of Thee excels and wins over all other of Thy incarnations.

ದ್ವಿಜರುಷಾ ಕೃಕಲಾಸವಪುರ್ಧರಂ ನೃಗನೃಪಂ ತ್ರಿದಿವಾಲಯಮಾಪಯನ್ ।
ನಿಜಜನೇ ದ್ವಿಜಭಕ್ತಿಮನುತ್ತಮಾಮುಪದಿಶನ್ ಪವನೇಶ್ವರ್ ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಮ್ ॥10॥
Meaning
ದ್ವಿಜ-ರುಷಾ - by a holy Braahmin's anger; ಕೃಕಲಾಸಃ-ವಪುಃ-ಧರಂ - in a chameleon's body form; ನೃಗ-ನೃಪಂ - Nriga king; ತ್ರಿದಿವ-ಆಲಯಂ- - to the god's abode (heaven); ಆಪಯನ್ - sending; ನಿಜ-ಜನೇ - in Thy people (devotees); ದ್ವಿಜ-ಭಕ್ತಿಂ-ಅನುತ್ತಮಾಂ- - for Braahminas respect supreme; ಉಪದಿಶನ್ - instructing; ಪವನೇಶ್ವರ ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಂ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
King Nriga who was reduced to the body of a chameleon by a holy Braahmin's curse, was purified and sent to heaven by Thee. By this Thou instructed Thy devotees to have supreme respect for holy Braahmins. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me.
