ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಯಿ ದೇವ ಪುರಾ ಕಿಲ ತ್ವಯಿ ಸ್ವಯಮುತ್ತಾನಶಯೇ ಸ್ತನಂಧಯೇ ।
ಪರಿಜೃಂಭಣತೋ ವ್ಯಪಾವೃತೇ ವದನೇ ವಿಶ್ವಮಚಷ್ಟ ವಲ್ಲವೀ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಅಯಿ ದೇವ - O Lord!; ಪುರಾ ಕಿಲ - long ago indeed; ತ್ವಯಿ ಸ್ವಯಂ- - (when) Thou by Thyself; ಉತ್ತಾನಶಯೇ - while lying on the back; ಸ್ತನಂಧಯೇ - and sucking at the breast (of Yashodaa); ಪರಿಜೃಂಭಣತಃ - by yawning; ವ್ಯಪಾವೃತೇ ವದನೇ - in Thy open mouth; ವಿಶ್ವಂ-ಅಚಷ್ಟ - the universe, was seen; ವಲ್ಲವೀ - by the cowherdess (Yashodaa);
Translation
O Lord! Once long ago, as Thou were lying flat on the back, in the lap of Yashodaa and sucking at her breast, Thou yawned. As Thou did so, in Thy open mouth, Thou revealed to her the whole universe.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪುನರಪ್ಯಥ ಬಾಲಕೈಃ ಸಮಂ ತ್ವಯಿ ಲೀಲಾನಿರತೇ ಜಗತ್ಪತೇ ।
ಫಲಸಂಚಯವಂಚನಕ್ರುಧಾ ತವ ಮೃದ್ಭೋಜನಮೂಚುರರ್ಭಕಾಃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಪುನಃ-ಅಪಿ-ಅಥ - again also; ಬಾಲಕೈಃ ಸಮಂ - with the children; ತ್ವಯಿ ಲೀಲಾ-ನಿರತೇ - (when) Thou were engrossed in play; ಜಗತ್ಪತೇ - O Lord of the Universe!; ಫಲ-ಸಂಚಯ- - in collecting the fruits; ವಂಚನ-ಕ್ರುಧಾ - being cheated and angered (the children); ತವ ಮೃದ್-ಭೋಜನಂ- - Thy eating of sand; ಊಚುಃ-ಅರ್ಭಕಾಃ - reported the children;
Translation
O Lord of the Universe! Again once, as Thou were playing with other children, Thou cheated them in collecting fruits. Angered at this, they reported to Thy mother that Thou had eaten mud.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಯಿ ತೇ ಪ್ರಲಯಾವಧೌ ವಿಭೋ ಕ್ಷಿತಿತೋಯಾದಿಸಮಸ್ತಭಕ್ಷಿಣಃ ।
ಮೃದುಪಾಶನತೋ ರುಜಾ ಭವೇದಿತಿ ಭೀತಾ ಜನನೀ ಚುಕೋಪ ಸಾ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಅಯಿ - O (Thou); ತೇ ಪ್ರಲಯ-ಅವಧೌ - Thee at the time of deluge; ವಿಭೋ - O Lord!; ಕ್ಷಿತಿ-ತೋಯ-ಆದಿ- - earth water etc; ಸಮಸ್ತ-ಭಕ್ಷಿಣಃ - everything consuming; ಮೃದ್-ಉಪಾಶನತಃ - by eating mud,; ರುಜಾ ಭವೇತ್-ಇತಿ - sickness may be, thus; ಭೀತಾ ಜನನೀ - (Thy) frightened mother; ಚುಕೋಪ ಸಾ - she became angry;
Translation
O Lord! At the time of the deluge Thou do consume everything earth water etc. Yet Thy mother was frightened that Thou may fall sick by eating mud and so she became angry.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಯಿ ದುರ್ವಿನಯಾತ್ಮಕ ತ್ವಯಾ ಕಿಮು ಮೃತ್ಸಾ ಬತ ವತ್ಸ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಾ ।
ಇತಿ ಮಾತೃಗಿರಂ ಚಿರಂ ವಿಭೋ ವಿತಥಾಂ ತ್ವಂ ಪ್ರತಿಜಜ್ಞಿಷೇ ಹಸನ್ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಅಯಿ ದುರ್ವಿನಯಾತ್ಮಕ - O naughty (one); ತ್ವಯಾ ಕಿಮು - by you was it; ಮೃತ್ಸಾ ಬತ - that mud indeed; ವತ್ಸ ಭಕ್ಷಿತಾ - O son, was eaten; ಇತಿ ಮಾತೃಗಿರಂ - such the words of Thy mother; ಚಿರಂ ವಿಭೋ - for a long time O Lord; ವಿತಥಾಂ ತ್ವಂ - as false, Thee; ಪ್ರತಿಜಜ್ಞಿಷೇ ಹಸನ್ - asserted laughingly;
Translation
O you naughty one! Is it that you have eaten mud O son!' O Lord! These words of Thy mother, for a long time, Thou kept on denying and laughingly asserted that Thou had not done so.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಯಿ ತೇ ಸಕಲೈರ್ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಿತೇ ವಿಮತಿಶ್ಚೇದ್ವದನಂ ವಿದಾರ್ಯತಾಮ್ ।
ಇತಿ ಮಾತೃವಿಭರ್ತ್ಸಿತೋ ಮುಖಂ ವಿಕಸತ್ಪದ್ಮನಿಭಂ ವ್ಯದಾರಯಃ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಅಯಿ ತೇ - O Boy! Of you; ಸಕಲೈಃ-ವಿನಿಶ್ಚಿತೇ - by every one asserted; ವಿಮತಿಃ-ಚೇತ್- - is, if disagreed; ವದನಂ ವಿದಾರ್ಯತಾಂ - mouth (please) open; ಇತಿ ಮಾತೃ-ವಿಭರ್ತ್ಸಿತಃ - thus by mother reprimanded; ಮುಖಂ ವಿಕಸತ್-ಪದ್ಮ-ನಿಭಂ - the mouth opening, lotus like; ವ್ಯದಾರಯಃ - (Thou) opened;
Translation
O Boy! If you deny what all the others are saying, please open your mouth.' Thus reprimanded by Thy mother, Thou opened Thy mouth as a lotus in full bloom.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಪಿ ಮೃಲ್ಲವದರ್ಶನೋತ್ಸುಕಾಂ ಜನನೀಂ ತಾಂ ಬಹು ತರ್ಪಯನ್ನಿವ ।
ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ನಿಖಿಲಾಂ ನ ಕೇವಲಂ ಭುವನಾನ್ಯಪ್ಯಖಿಲಾನ್ಯದೀದೃಶಃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ಅಪಿ ಮೃಲ್-ಲವ - even a mud trace; ದರ್ಶನ-ಉತ್ಸುಕಾಂ - eager to see; ಜನನೀಂ ತಾಂ - to mother that; ಬಹು ತರ್ಪಯನ್-ಇವ - very much trying to please as though,; ಪೃಥಿವೀಂ ನಿಖಿಲಾಂ - the earth whole; ನ ಕೇವಲಂ - not only; ಭುವನಾನ್-ಅಪಿ- - the other worlds also; ಅಖಿಲಾನ್-ಅದೀದೃಶಃ - entirely showed;
Translation
Thy mother was eager to see just a trace of mud in Thy mouth. As though to please her, and to give her abundant satisfaction Thou showed her in Thy mouth not only this whole earth but the entire universe.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕುಹಚಿದ್ವನಮಂಬುಧಿಃ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಕ್ವಚಿದಭ್ರಂ ಕುಹಚಿದ್ರಸಾತಲಮ್ ।
ಮನುಜಾ ದನುಜಾಃ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಸುರಾ ದದೃಶೇ ಕಿಂ ನ ತದಾ ತ್ವದಾನನೇ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಕುಹಚಿತ್-ವನಂ- - somewhere the forests; ಅಂಬುಧಿಃ ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ - the oceans somewhere; ಕ್ವಚಿತ್-ಅಭ್ರಂ - somewhere the sky; ಕುಹಚಿತ್-ರಸಾತಲಂ - somewhere the Rasaatala; ಮನುಜಾಃ ದನುಜಾಃ - human beings, demons; ಕ್ವಚಿತ್ ಸುರಾಃ - somewhere the devas; ದದೃಶೇ ಕಿಂ ನ - seen what not was; ತದಾ ತ್ವತ್-ಆನನೇ - at that time in Thy mouth;
Translation
At that time, in Thy mouth what not was seen by Yashodaa? Somewhere the forests and oceans, somewhere the skies and Rasaatala, human beings and demons, gods and devas!
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಲಶಾಂಬುಧಿಶಾಯಿನಂ ಪುನಃ ಪರವೈಕುಂಠಪದಾಧಿವಾಸಿನಮ್ ।
ಸ್ವಪುರಶ್ಚ ನಿಜಾರ್ಭಕಾತ್ಮಕಂ ಕತಿಧಾ ತ್ವಾಂ ನ ದದರ್ಶ ಸಾ ಮುಖೇ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಕಲಶ-ಅಂಬುಧಿ-ಶಾಯಿನಂ - in the milk ocean, the recliner; ಪುನಃ ಪರ-ವೈಕುಂಠಪದ- - as the Paramaatamaa, in the Vaikuntha abode; ಅಧಿವಾಸಿನಂ - the resident; ಸ್ವ-ಪುರಃ-ಚ - in front of herself; ನಿಜ-ಅರ್ಭಕ-ಆತ್ಮಕಂ - as her own son; ಕತಿಧಾ - in how many ways; ತ್ವಾಂ ನ ದದರ್ಶ - Thee did not see; ಸಾ ಮುಖೇ - she in (Thy) mouth;
Translation
Yashodaa saw in Thy mouth the recliner in the milk ocean. Again she saw Paramaatamaa, the resident of the Vaikunth abode. Then she saw Thee as her son in front of her. In how many different ways did she not see Thee.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ವಿಕಸದ್ಭುವನೇ ಮುಖೋದರೇ ನನು ಭೂಯೋಽಪಿ ತಥಾವಿಧಾನನಃ ।
ಅನಯಾ ಸ್ಫುಟಮೀಕ್ಷಿತೋ ಭವಾನನವಸ್ಥಾಂ ಜಗತಾಂ ಬತಾತನೋತ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ವಿಕಸತ್-ಭುವನೇ - revealing the worlds; ಮುಖ-ಉದರೇ - in the inside of the mouth; ನನು ಭೂಯಃ-ಅಪಿ - indeed then again also; ತಥಾ-ವಿಧ-ಆನನಃ - that same type of face; ಅನಯಾ ಸ್ಫುಟಂ-ಈಕ್ಷಿತಃ - by her was clearly seen; ಭವಾನ್-ಅನವಸ್ಥಾಂ - Thou as the infinitude; ಜಗತಾಂ - of the universe; ಬತ್-ಆತನೋತ್ - definitely expounded;
Translation
In the cavity of Thy mouth she saw all the worlds, where even Thou were present with Thy mouth open, once again, in which again all the worlds were seen; and so on endlessly. This definitely expounded Thou as the infinitude of the universe.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಧೃತತತ್ತ್ವಧಿಯಂ ತದಾ ಕ್ಷಣಂ ಜನನೀಂ ತಾಂ ಪ್ರಣಯೇನ ಮೋಹಯನ್ ।
ಸ್ತನಮಂಬ ದಿಶೇತ್ಯುಪಾಸಜನ್ ಭಗವನ್ನದ್ಭುತಬಾಲ ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಮ್ ॥10॥
Meaning
ಧೃತ-ತತ್ತ್ವ-ಧಿಯಂ - holding the reality in the mind; ತದಾ ಕ್ಷಣಂ - at that time for a moment; ಜನನೀಂ ತಾಂ - to the mother; ಪ್ರಣಯೇನ ಮೋಹಯನ್ - by affection enchanting (deluding); ಸ್ತನಂ-ಅಂಬ ದಿಶ- - breast milk O Mother give'; ಇತಿ-ಉಪಾಸಜನ್ - thus embracing; ಭಗವನ್- - O Lord!; ಅದ್ಭುತ-ಬಾಲ - O Wonderful Child!; ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಂ - protect me;
Translation
At that time for a moment, Yashodaa had a flash of illumination. Thou with affection deluded her and clung to her, calling her 'Mother' and demanded to be suckled. O Lord! Thou the Wondrous Child! Deign to protect me.
