ಗೋಪೀಜನಾಯ ಕಥಿತಂ ನಿಯಮಾವಸಾನೇ
ಮಾರೋತ್ಸವಂ ತ್ವಮಥ ಸಾಧಯಿತುಂ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಃ ।
ಸಾಂದ್ರೇಣ ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಹಸಾ ಶಿಶಿರೀಕೃತಾಶೇ
ಪ್ರಾಪೂರಯೋ ಮುರಲಿಕಾಂ ಯಮುನಾವನಾಂತೇ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಗೋಪೀಜನಾಯ - for the Gopikaas; ಕಥಿತಂ - said (promised); ನಿಯಮ-ಅವಸಾನೇ - (when their) vows had ended; ಮಾರ-ಉತ್ಸವಂ - the love-god festival; ತ್ವಂ-ಅಥ - Thou then; ಸಾಧಯಿತುಂ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಃ - to carry out (fulfill) decided; ಸಾಂದ್ರೇಣ ಚಾಂದ್ರಮಹಸಾ - with bright light of the full moon; ಶಿಶಿರೀ-ಕೃತ-ಆಶೇ - and cooled all the directions; ಪ್ರಾಪೂರಯಃ ಮುರಲಿಕಾಂ - (Thou) filled well (played) the flute; ಯಮುನಾ-ವನ-ಅಂತೇ - in the forests on the banks of Yamunaa;
Translation
Thou then decided to carry out the festival of the love god, which Thou had promised to the Gopikaas when their vows had ended. One night, with the bright light of the full moon, when all the directions were cool, in the forest on the banks of the river Yamunaa, Thou resoundingly played the flute.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸಮ್ಮೂರ್ಛನಾಭಿರುದಿತಸ್ವರಮಂಡಲಾಭಿಃ
ಸಮ್ಮೂರ್ಛಯಂತಮಖಿಲಂ ಭುವನಾಂತರಾಲಮ್ ।
ತ್ವದ್ವೇಣುನಾದಮುಪಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ವಿಭೋ ತರುಣ್ಯ-
ಸ್ತತ್ತಾದೃಶಂ ಕಮಪಿ ಚಿತ್ತವಿಮೋಹಮಾಪುಃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಸಮ್ಮೂರ್ಛನಾಭಿಃ- - by the seven (ascending and descending) notes; ಉದಿತ- - emerging; ಸ್ವರಮಂಡಲಾಭಿಃ - in a musical strain; ಸಮ್ಮೂರ್ಛಯಂತಂ- - enchanting; ಅಖಿಲಂ - everything; ಭುವನ-ಅಂತರಾಲಂ - in the world space; ತ್ವತ್-ವೇಣು-ನಾದಂ- - Thy flute resounding; ಉಪಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ವಿಭೋ - hearing (which) O All pervading Lord!; ತರುಣ್ಯಃ-ತತ್-ತಾದೃಶಂ - the damsels, that compared to that (incomparable); ಕಂ-ಅಪಿ - some (sort of); ಚಿತ್ತ-ವಿಮೋಹಂ-ಆಪುಃ - mind captivation attained to;
Translation
O All pervading Lord! In the resounding sound of Thy flute the seven ascending and descending notes emerged in a musical strain and enchanted everything in the world space. Hearing which the damsels attained an unparalleled and incomparable captivating state of their mind.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಾ ಗೇಹಕೃತ್ಯನಿರತಾಸ್ತನಯಪ್ರಸಕ್ತಾಃ
ಕಾಂತೋಪಸೇವನಪರಾಶ್ಚ ಸರೋರುಹಾಕ್ಷ್ಯಃ ।
ಸರ್ವಂ ವಿಸೃಜ್ಯ ಮುರಲೀರವಮೋಹಿತಾಸ್ತೇ
ಕಾಂತಾರದೇಶಮಯಿ ಕಾಂತತನೋ ಸಮೇತಾಃ ॥3॥
Meaning
ತಾಃ - they; ಗೇಹ-ಕೃತ್ಯ-ನಿರತಾಃ- - who were in household duties engaged; ತನಯ-ಪ್ರಸಕ್ತಾಃ - (or) were their children tending; ಕಾಂತ-ಉಪಸೇವನ-ಪರಾಃ-ಚ - and in the husband's service eager; ಸರೋರುಹ-ಆಕ್ಷ್ಯಃ - (they) the lotus eyed damsels; ಸರ್ವಂ ವಿಸೃಜ್ಯ - everything abandoning; ಮುರಲೀ-ರವ- - (by) the flute sound; ಮೋಹಿತಾಃ-ತೇ - captivated they (the damsels); ಕಾಂತಾರ-ದೇಶಂ- - to the forest place; ಅಯಿ ಕಾಂತ-ತನೋ - O Resplendent One!; ಸಮೇತಾಃ - came;
Translation
O Resplendent One! The lotus eyed damsels were captivated by the sound of Thy flute. They, who were engaged in the household duties, or were taking care of their children, or were engaged in serving their husbands, abandoned everything and came rushing to the forest place.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಾಶ್ಚಿನ್ನಿಜಾಂಗಪರಿಭೂಷಣಮಾದಧಾನಾ
ವೇಣುಪ್ರಣಾದಮುಪಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ಕೃತಾರ್ಧಭೂಷಾಃ ।
ತ್ವಾಮಾಗತಾ ನನು ತಥೈವ ವಿಭೂಷಿತಾಭ್ಯ-
ಸ್ತಾ ಏವ ಸಂರುರುಚಿರೇ ತವ ಲೋಚನಾಯ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್- - some (damsels); ನಿಜ-ಅಂಗ- - their own bodies; ಪರಿಭೂಷಣಂ- - (with) dress and jewels; ಆದಧಾನಾ - adorning; ವೇಣು-ಪ್ರಣಾದಂ- - the resounding flute sound; ಉಪಕರ್ಣ್ಯ - hearing; ಕೃತ-ಅರ್ಧ-ಭೂಷಾಃ - having adorned half way only; ತ್ವಾಂ-ಆಗತಾಃ - to Thee came; ನನು ತಥಾ-ಏವ - indeed thus only; ವಿಭೂಷಿತಾಭ್ಯಃ - than those who were fully adorned; ತಾ ಏವ - they only; ಸಂರುರುಚಿರೇ - were more pleasing; ತವ ಲೋಚನಾಯ - for Thy eyes;
Translation
Some of the damsels were dressing up and adorning their bodies with jewels. As they heard the resounding sound of the flute, they came to Thee having adorned themselves halfway. For Thy eyes they were far more pleasing indeed than those who were fully adorned.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಹಾರಂ ನಿತಂಬಭುವಿ ಕಾಚನ ಧಾರಯಂತೀ
ಕಾಂಚೀಂ ಚ ಕಂಠಭುವಿ ದೇವ ಸಮಾಗತಾ ತ್ವಾಮ್ ।
ಹಾರಿತ್ವಮಾತ್ಮಜಘನಸ್ಯ ಮುಕುಂದ ತುಭ್ಯಂ
ವ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಬಭಾಷ ಇವ ಮುಗ್ಧಮುಖೀ ವಿಶೇಷಾತ್ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಹಾರಂ ನಿತಂಬ-ಭುವಿ - necklace on the hip area; ಕಾಚನ ಧಾರಯಂತೀ - someone wearing; ಕಾಂಚೀಂ ಚ - and the waist band; ಕಂಠ-ಭುವಿ - in the neck area; ದೇವ - O Lord!; ಸಮಾಗತಾ ತ್ವಾಂ - came to Thee; ಹಾರಿತ್ವಂ- - the attractiveness; ಆತ್ಮ-ಜಘನಸ್ಯ - of her own hips; ಮುಕುಂದ ತುಭ್ಯಂ - O Mukund for Thee; ವ್ಯಕ್ತಂ ಬಭಾಷ ಇವ - clearly declared as if; ಮುಗ್ಧಮುಖೀ - the charming faced one; ವಿಶೇಷಾತ್ - in particular;
Translation
O Lord! One woman, in her haste, came to Thee wearing a necklace on the hips and the waist band in the neck area. O Mukund! It was as if the charming faced one clearly indicated to Thee in particular the attractiveness of her own hips.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಾಚಿತ್ ಕುಚೇ ಪುನರಸಜ್ಜಿತಕಂಚುಲೀಕಾ
ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹತಃ ಪರವಧೂಭಿರಲಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾ ।
ತ್ವಾಮಾಯಯೌ ನಿರುಪಮಪ್ರಣಯಾತಿಭಾರ-
ರಾಜ್ಯಾಭಿಷೇಕವಿಧಯೇ ಕಲಶೀಧರೇವ ॥6॥
Meaning
ಕಾಚಿತ್ ಕುಚೇ - some one ,on her breasts; ಪುನಃ-ಅಸಜ್ಜಿತ- - again not wearing; ಕಂಚುಲೀಕಾ - the upper garment; ವ್ಯಾಮೋಹತಃ - because of excitement; ಪರವಧೂಭಿಃ- - by other women; ಅಲಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣಾ - also not noticed; ತ್ವಾಂ-ಆಯಯೌ - to Thee came; ನಿರುಪಮ-ಪ್ರಣಯ- - (as if) unparalleled (intense) love; ಅತಿಭಾರ- - intense (weighed down by); ರಾಜ್ಯ-ಅಭಿಷೇಕ-ವಿಧಯೇ - kingdom coronation celebration; ಕಲಶೀಧರ-ಇವ - water pitchers as if;
Translation
Some another woman, in her excitement came to Thee not wearing any upper garment on her breasts. She was not noticed in such a state by the other women, who were as excited. It was as if she was weighed down by the unparalleled intense love she carried as water pitchers as breasts for the celebration of Thy coronation in the kingdom of love.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ ಗೃಹಾತ್ ಕಿಲ ನಿರೇತುಮಪಾರಯಂತ್ಯ-
ಸ್ತ್ವಾಮೇವ ದೇವ ಹೃದಯೇ ಸುದೃಢಂ ವಿಭಾವ್ಯ ।
ದೇಹಂ ವಿಧೂಯ ಪರಚಿತ್ಸುಖರೂಪಮೇಕಂ
ತ್ವಾಮಾವಿಶನ್ ಪರಮಿಮಾ ನನು ಧನ್ಯಧನ್ಯಾಃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಕಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ ಗೃಹಾತ್ - some one from home; ಕಿಲ ನಿರೇತುಂ- - indeed to come out; ಅಪಾರಯಂತ್ಯಃ - being unable; ತ್ವಾಂ-ಏವ ದೇವ - Thee alone O Lord!; ಹೃದಯೇ ಸುದೃಢಂ ವಿಭಾವ್ಯ - in heart firmly meditating; ದೇಹಂ ವಿಧೂಯ - body giving up; ಪರ-ಚಿತ್-ಸುಖ- - the Supreme conscious bliss; ರೂಪಂ-ಏಕಂ ತ್ವಾಂ- - form of non-dual, in Thee; ಆವಿಶನ್ - merging; ಪರಂ-ಇಮಾಃ-ನನು - very much these (women) indeed; ಧನ್ಯ-ಧನ್ಯಾಃ - (were) most fortunate;
Translation
Some of them were indeed unable to come out from home. O Lord! They meditated on Thee firmly in their hearts. With the result, they gave up their bodies and merged with Thy non dual form and attained the Supreme consciousness bliss. These indeed were the most fortunate ones.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಜಾರಾತ್ಮನಾ ನ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮತಯಾ ಸ್ಮರಂತ್ಯೋ
ನಾರ್ಯೋ ಗತಾಃ ಪರಮಹಂಸಗತಿಂ ಕ್ಷಣೇನ ।
ತಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶಪರಮಾತ್ಮತನುಂ ಕಥಂಚಿ-
ಚ್ಚಿತ್ತೇ ವಹನ್ನಮೃತಮಶ್ರಮಮಶ್ನುವೀಯ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಜಾರಾತ್ಮನಾ - by the feeling of paramour; ನ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮತಯಾ - not by the feeling of godliness; ಸ್ಮರಂತ್ಯಃ - thinking of Thee; ನಾರ್ಯಃ ಗತಾಃ - the women attained; ಪರಮಹಂಸಗತಿಂ - to the state of liberation; ಕ್ಷಣೇನ ತಂ ತ್ವಾಂ - in a moment, that Thou; ಪ್ರಕಾಶ-ಪರಮಾತ್ಮ-ತನುಂ - resplendent supreme form; ಕಥಂಚಿತ್- - in any manner; ಚಿತ್ತೇ ವಹನ್- - in the mind holding (meditating); ಅಮೃತಂ- - the state of immortality; ಅಶ್ರಮಂ-ಅಶ್ನುವೀಯ - effortlessly may I attain;
Translation
These women thought of Thee and remembered Thee not with the feeling of godliness, Paramaatmaa, but with the feeling of paramour. In a moment, they attained the state of liberation with Thee. O Supreme Resplendent form! Meditating in the mind in some or the other manner may I attain the state of immortality effortlessly.

ಅಭ್ಯಾಗತಾಭಿರಭಿತೋ ವ್ರಜಸುಂದರೀಭಿ-
ರ್ಮುಗ್ಧಸ್ಮಿತಾರ್ದ್ರವದನಃ ಕರುಣಾವಲೋಕೀ ।
ನಿಸ್ಸೀಮಕಾಂತಿಜಲಧಿಸ್ತ್ವಮವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣೋ
ವಿಶ್ವೈಕಹೃದ್ಯ ಹರ ಮೇ ಪವನೇಶ ರೋಗಾನ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಅಭ್ಯಾಗತಾಭಿಃ- - by those who had come; ಅಭಿತಃ - all around; ವ್ರಜಸುಂದರೀಭಿಃ- - (by) the beautiful women fo Vraja; ಮುಗ್ಧ-ಸ್ಮಿತ-ಆರ್ದ್ರ-ವದನಃ - (with) a captivating smile lit on the face; ಕರುಣಾ-ಅವಲೋಕೀ - (Thou) glancing with compassion; ನಿಸ್ಸೀಮ-ಕಾಂತಿ- - unbound splendorous; ಜಲಧಿಃ-ತ್ವಂ- - ocean Thou; ಅವೇಕ್ಷ್ಯಮಾಣಃ - were looked at (by the women); ವಿಶ್ವೈಕಹೃದ್ಯ - O Stealer of the world's heart!; ಹರ ಮೇ - rid me of my; ಪವನೇಶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ರೋಗಾನ್ - ailments;
Translation
The beautiful women of Vraja, who had come and gathered all around Thee, were looking at Thee. Thou had a captivating smile lighting Thy face, glancing with compassion, and Thou who are like an unbound ocean of splendour, O Hari! The stealer of the world's heart! rid me, O Lord of Guruvaayur! of my ailments.
