ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪ್ರಾಚೇತಸಸ್ತು ಭಗವನ್ನಪರೋ ಹಿ ದಕ್ಷ-
ಸ್ತ್ವತ್ಸೇವನಂ ವ್ಯಧಿತ ಸರ್ಗವಿವೃದ್ಧಿಕಾಮಃ ।
ಆವಿರ್ಬಭೂವಿಥ ತದಾ ಲಸದಷ್ಟಬಾಹು-
ಸ್ತಸ್ಮೈ ವರಂ ದದಿಥ ತಾಂ ಚ ವಧೂಮಸಿಕ್ನೀಮ್ ॥1॥

Meaning
ಪ್ರಾಚೇತಃ-ತು - a son of Prachetas, indeed,; ಭಗವನ್- - O Lord!; ಅಪರೋ ಹಿ ದಕ್ಷಃ- - another Daksha (not Daksha Prajaapati); ತ್ವತ್-ಸೇವನಂ ವ್ಯಧಿತ - Thy worship performed; ಸರ್ಗ-ವಿವೃದ್ಧಿ-ಕಾಮಃ - the species to multiply desirous; ಆವಿರ್ಬಭೂವಿಥ ತದಾ - Thou appeared then; ಲಸತ್-ಅಷ್ಟ-ಬಾಹುಃ- - with eight resplendent arms; ತಸ್ಮೈ ವರಂ ದದಿಥ - (and) gave the boon; ತಾಂ ಚ ವಧೂಂ- - and also that bride; ಅಸಿಕ್ನೀಂ - (named) Asikni;

Translation
The son of one of the Prachetas, another Daksha, indeed, desirous of multiplying the progeny, worshipped Thee. Then Thou appeared with eight resplendent arms and gave him a boon and also Asikni as wife.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಸ್ಯಾತ್ಮಜಾಸ್ತ್ವಯುತಮೀಶ ಪುನಸ್ಸಹಸ್ರಂ
ಶ್ರೀನಾರದಸ್ಯ ವಚಸಾ ತವ ಮಾರ್ಗಮಾಪುಃ ।
ನೈಕತ್ರವಾಸಮೃಷಯೇ ಸ ಮುಮೋಚ ಶಾಪಂ
ಭಕ್ತೋತ್ತಮಸ್ತ್ವೃಷಿರನುಗ್ರಹಮೇವ ಮೇನೇ ॥2॥

Meaning
ತಸ್ಯ-ಆತ್ಮಜಾಃ- - his sons; ತು-ಅಯುತಂ- - indeed ten thousand; ಈಶ - O Lord!; ಪುನಃ-ಸಹಸ್ರಂ - again (also) one thousand; ಶ್ರೀನಾರದಸ್ಯ ವಚಸಾ - by the advice of Shree Naarada; ತವ ಮಾರ್ಗಂ-ಆಪುಃ - took to Thy path (of meditation etc); ನ-ಐಕತ್ರ-ವಾಸಂ- - (you) will not be residing in one place; ಋಷಯೇ - to the sage (Naarada); ಸ ಮುಮೋಚ ಶಾಪಂ - he (Daksha) gave the curse; ಭಕ್ತ-ಉತ್ತಮಃ-ತು-ಋಷಿಃ- - highest of (Thy) devotees, the sage; ಅನುಗ್ರಹಂ-ಏವ ಮೇನೇ - took it for a blessing.;

Translation
His eleven thousand sons, on the advice of Shree Naarada took to the path of devotion to Thee, to attain liberation. Daksha was displeased with Naarada and so pronounced a curse on him that he would not have any fixed place of residence. Sage Naarada, the highest of devotees, considered it only as blessing.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಷಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ತತೋ ದುಹಿತೃಭಿಃ ಸೃಜತಃ ಕುಲೌಘಾನ್
ದೌಹಿತ್ರಸೂನುರಥ ತಸ್ಯ ಸ ವಿಶ್ವರೂಪಃ ।
ತ್ವತ್ಸ್ತೋತ್ರವರ್ಮಿತಮಜಾಪಯದಿಂದ್ರಮಾಜೌ
ದೇವ ತ್ವದೀಯಮಹಿಮಾ ಖಲು ಸರ್ವಜೈತ್ರಃ ॥3॥

Meaning
ಷಷ್ಟ್ಯಾ ತತಃ ದುಹಿತೃಭಿಃ - then by ( his) sixty daughters; ಸೃಜತಃ ಕುಲ-ಔಘಾನ್ - (he) was multiplying the species; ದೌಹಿತ್ರ-ಸೂನುಃ-ಅಥ ತಸ್ಯ - then one of his daughter's son's son; ಸ ವಿಶ್ವರೂಪಃ - that (named) Vishwaroopa; ತ್ವತ್-ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ-ವರ್ಮಿತಂ- - Thy protective hymn; ಅಜಾಪಯತ್-ಇಂದ್ರಂ- - made Indra recite; ಆಜೌ - in a battle; ದೇವ - O Lord!; ತ್ವದೀಯ-ಮಹಿಮಾ - Thy glory; ಖಲು ಸರ್ವಜೈತ್ರಃ - indeed is victorious over all;

Translation
Then Daksha multiplied the species through his sixty daughters. His daughter's son's son named Vishwaroopa made Indra win the battle against the Asuras. Indra was provided protection and victory by learning from Vishwaroopa the hymn addressed to Thee (Naaraayana Kavacha). O Lord! Thy glory can indeed conquer all.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪ್ರಾಕ್ಶೂರಸೇನವಿಷಯೇ ಕಿಲ ಚಿತ್ರಕೇತುಃ
ಪುತ್ರಾಗ್ರಹೀ ನೃಪತಿರಂಗಿರಸಃ ಪ್ರಭಾವಾತ್ ।
ಲಬ್ಧ್ವೈಕಪುತ್ರಮಥ ತತ್ರ ಹತೇ ಸಪತ್ನೀ-
ಸಂಘೈರಮುಹ್ಯದವಶಸ್ತವ ಮಾಯಯಾಸೌ ॥4॥

Meaning
ಪ್ರಾಕ್- - once upon a time; ಶೂರಸೇನ-ವಿಷಯೇ - in Shoorsena's kingdom; ಕಿಲ ಚಿತ್ರಕೇತುಃ - indeed, Chitraketu; ಪುತ್ರ-ಆಗ್ರಹೀ ನೃಪತಿಃ - desirous of a son, the king; ಅಂಗಿರಸಃ ಪ್ರಭಾವಾತ್ - by sage Angirasa's blessings; ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾ-ಏಕ-ಪುತ್ರಂ- - getting one son; ಅಥ ತತ್ರ ಹತೇ ಸಪತ್ನೀಸಂಘೈಃ- - then, there (the son) was killed by the other wives; ಅಮುಹ್ಯತ್-ಅವಶಃ- - and overcome by grief, he fainted; ತವ ಮಾಯಯಾ ಅಸೌ - owing to the power of Thy Maayaa;

Translation
Once upon a time, in the kingdom named Shoorsena the king Chitraketu was desirous of getting a son. By the blessings of sage Angirasa he got a son. The child was killed by his other wives out of jealousy. The king fainted with grief owing to the power of Thy Maayaa.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಂ ನಾರದಸ್ತು ಸಮಮಂಗಿರಸಾ ದಯಾಲುಃ
ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ ತಾವದುಪದರ್ಶ್ಯ ಸುತಸ್ಯ ಜೀವಮ್ ।
ಕಸ್ಯಾಸ್ಮಿ ಪುತ್ರ ಇತಿ ತಸ್ಯ ಗಿರಾ ವಿಮೋಹಂ
ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತ್ವದರ್ಚನವಿಧೌ ನೃಪತಿಂ ನ್ಯಯುಂಕ್ತ ॥5॥

Meaning
ತಂ ನಾರದಃ-ತು - him, Naarada then; ಸಮಂ-ಅಂಗಿರಸಾ - along with Angirasa; ದಯಾಲುಃ - merciful (Naarada); ಸಂಪ್ರಾಪ್ಯ - approaching; ತಾವತ್-ಉಪದರ್ಶ್ಯ - then showed; ಸುತಸ್ಯ ಜೀವಂ - the son's soul; ಕಸ್ಯ-ಅಸ್ಮಿ ಪುತ್ರ(ಃ) ಇತಿ - whose son am I, thus; ತಸ್ಯ ಗಿರಾ - by his speech; ವಿಮೋಹಂ ತ್ಯಕ್ತ್ವಾ - giving up delusion; ತ್ವತ್-ಅರ್ಚನ-ವಿಧೌ - in the ways of Thy worship; ನೃಪತಿಂ ನ್ಯಯುಂಕ್ತ - gave instructions to the king;

Translation
The merciful Naarada and sage Angirasa went to Chitraketu and showed him the soul of his dead son. The soul asked 'whose son am I?' These words dispelled the king's delusion. The sages then instructed him in the ways of Thy worship.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಂ ಚ ಮಂತ್ರಮಪಿ ನಾರದತೋಽಥ ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾ
ತೋಷಾಯ ಶೇಷವಪುಷೋ ನನು ತೇ ತಪಸ್ಯನ್ ।
ವಿದ್ಯಾಧರಾಧಿಪತಿತಾಂ ಸ ಹಿ ಸಪ್ತರಾತ್ರೇ
ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾಪ್ಯಕುಂಠಮತಿರನ್ವಭಜದ್ಭವಂತಮ್ ॥6॥

Meaning
ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಂ ಚ ಮಂತ್ರಂ-ಅಪಿ - hymns and Mantras; ನಾರದತಃ-ಅಥ ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾ - from Naarada then receiving; ತೋಷಾಯ ಶೇಷ-ವಪುಷಃ - for propitiation of (Thee) (who were) in the form of Aadishesha; ನನು ತೇ ತಪಸ್ಯನ್ - practising austerities to Thee alone; ವಿದ್ಯಾಧರ-ಅಧಿಪತಿತಾಂ - the leadership of Vidyaadharas; ಸ ಹಿ ಸಪ್ತ-ರಾತ್ರೇ ಲಬ್ಧ್ವಾ- - he obtained only in seven days; ಅಪಿ-ಅಕುಂಠಮತಿಃ- - still dissatisfied; ಅನ್ವಭಜತ್-ಭವಂತಂ - (he) continued to worship Thee;

Translation
Then receiving hymns and Mantras from Naarada, he practised austerities for propitiating Thee who were in the form of Aadishesha. Within seven days he obtained the leadership of the Vidyaadharas. Still dissatisfied, he continued to worship Thee with the same fervour.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಸ್ಮೈ ಮೃಣಾಲಧವಲೇನ ಸಹಸ್ರಶೀರ್ಷ್ಣಾ
ರೂಪೇಣ ಬದ್ಧನುತಿಸಿದ್ಧಗಣಾವೃತೇನ ।
ಪ್ರಾದುರ್ಭವನ್ನಚಿರತೋ ನುತಿಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನೋ
ದತ್ವಾಽಽತ್ಮತತ್ತ್ವಮನುಗೃಹ್ಯ ತಿರೋದಧಾಥ ॥7॥

Meaning
ತಸ್ಮೈ - to him (Chitraketu); ಮೃಣಾಲ-ಧವಲೇನ - as white as a lotus stalk; ಸಹಸ್ರ-ಶೀರ್ಷ್ಣಾ - with a thousand heads; ರೂಪೇಣ - in (such a) form; ಬದ್ಧನುತಿ-ಸಿದ್ಧಗಣ-ಆವೃತೇನ - singing hymns of praises,by Sidhdhas, surrounded; ಪ್ರಾದುರ್ಭವನ್-ಅಚಿರತಃ - quickly manifested; ನುತಿಭಿಃ ಪ್ರಸನ್ನಃ - with the hymns pleased; ದತ್ವಾ-ಆತ್ಮ-ತತ್ತ್ವಂ- - imparting knowledge of self; ಅನುಗೃಹ್ಯ - and blessing (him); ತಿರೋದಧಾಥ - Thou disappeared;

Translation
Presently Thou revealed Thyself to him in Thy form of Aadishesha, with a thousand hoods and white like a lotus stalk,surrounded by bands of Sidhdhaas singing hymns of praise. Pleased with the hymns, Thou blessed him and imparted to him the knowledge of the self and then Thou disappeared.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವದ್ಭಕ್ತಮೌಲಿರಥ ಸೋಽಪಿ ಚ ಲಕ್ಷಲಕ್ಷಂ
ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ ಹರ್ಷುಲಮನಾ ಭುವನೇಷು ಕಾಮಮ್ ।
ಸಂಗಾಪಯನ್ ಗುಣಗಣಂ ತವ ಸುಂದರೀಭಿಃ
ಸಂಗಾತಿರೇಕರಹಿತೋ ಲಲಿತಂ ಚಚಾರ ॥8॥

Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಭಕ್ತ-ಮೌಲಿಃ-ಅಥ ಸ- - the greatest of devotees ,he, then; ಅಪಿ ಚ - and also; ಲಕ್ಷ-ಲಕ್ಷಂ ವರ್ಷಾಣಿ - for many many years; ಹರ್ಷುಲ-ಮನಾ - happily (blissfully); ಭುವನೇಷು - in all the worlds; ಕಾಮಂ ಸಂಗಾಪಯನ್ - made to be sung; ಗುಣಗಣಂ ತವ - Thy glories; ಸುಂದರೀಭಿಃ - by beautiful Vidyaadharis; ಸಂಗ-ಅತಿರೇಕ-ರಹಿತಃ - without much sensuous attachment; ಲಲಿತಂ ಚಚಾರ - happily wandered about;

Translation
This great devotee Chitraketu for many many years wandered about happily in all the worlds without much attachment. He led the troupe of beautiful Vidyaadharis and also caused Thy glories and excellences to be sung, to his hearts content.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅತ್ಯಂತಸಂಗವಿಲಯಾಯ ಭವತ್ಪ್ರಣುನ್ನೋ
ನೂನಂ ಸ ರೂಪ್ಯಗಿರಿಮಾಪ್ಯ ಮಹತ್ಸಮಾಜೇ ।
ನಿಶ್ಶಂಕಮಂಕಕೃತವಲ್ಲಭಮಂಗಜಾರಿಂ
ತಂ ಶಂಕರಂ ಪರಿಹಸನ್ನುಮಯಾಭಿಶೇಪೇ ॥9॥

Meaning
ಅತ್ಯಂತ-ಸಂಗ-ವಿಲಯಾಯ - to rid (himself) of all sensuous hankerings; ಭವತ್-ಪ್ರಣುನ್ನಃ ನೂನಂ - prompted by Thee, it seems,; ಸ ರೂಪ್ಯಗಿರಿಂ-ಆಪ್ಯ - he, reaching the Silver mountain (Kailaash); ಮಹತ್-ಸಮಾಜೇ - in the assembly of sages; ನಿಶ್ಶಂಕಂ- - without any inhibition; ಅಂಕ-ಕೃತ-ವಲ್ಲಭಂ- - who had seated his consort on his lap; ಅಂಗಜಾರಿಂ ತಂ ಶಂಕರಂ - the destroyer of Kaamdeva, that Shankara; ಪರಿಹಸನ್- - ridiculing (him); ಉಮಯಾ-ಅಭಿಶೇಪೇ - was cursed by Umaa;

Translation
To rid himself completely of all sensuous hankerings, prompted by Thee, he once went to Mount Kailaash. There he saw the destroyer of Kaamadeva , Shankara, sitting in the assembly of sages with his consort Umaa seated on his lap without any concern. Chitraketu mocked at him and in turn was cursed by Umaa.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿಸ್ಸಂಭ್ರಮಸ್ತ್ವಯಮಯಾಚಿತಶಾಪಮೋಕ್ಷೋ
ವೃತ್ರಾಸುರತ್ವಮುಪಗಮ್ಯ ಸುರೇಂದ್ರಯೋಧೀ ।
ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾತ್ಮತತ್ತ್ವಕಥನೈಃ ಸಮರೇ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಂ
ಶತ್ರೋರಪಿ ಭ್ರಮಮಪಾಸ್ಯ ಗತಃ ಪದಂ ತೇ ॥10॥

Meaning
ನಿಸ್ಸಂಭ್ರಮಃ- - unperturbed; ತು-ಅಯಂ- - however, he (Chitraketu); ಅಯಾಚಿತ-ಶಾಪ-ಮೋಕ್ಷಃ - did not ask for relief from the curse; ವೃತ್ರಾಸುರತ್ವಂ-ಉಪಗಮ್ಯ - as vritraasura being born; ಸುರೇಂದ್ರ-ಯೋಧೀ - against Indra fighting; ಭಕ್ತ್ಯಾ- - by his devotion; ಆತ್ಮತತ್ತ್ವ-ಕಥನೈಃ - and by imparting knowledge of the self; ಸಮರೇ - in the battle,; ವಿಚಿತ್ರಂ - surprisingly,; ಶತ್ರೋಃ-ಅಪಿ ಭ್ರಮಂ- - the delusion of the enemy also; ಅಪಾಸ್ಯ - removing; ಗತಃ ಪದಂ ತೇ - reached Thy abode;

Translation
Unperturbed, Chitraketu did not ask for relief from the curse, and was born as Vritraasura. By his devotion, while fighting in the battle against Indra, he imparted the knowledge of the self to Indra and he removed the delusion of even his enemy. Thereby he reached Thy abode. What a wonder!

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವತ್ಸೇವನೇನ ದಿತಿರಿಂದ್ರವಧೋದ್ಯತಾಽಪಿ
ತಾನ್ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತೇಂದ್ರಸುಹೃದೋ ಮರುತೋಽಭಿಲೇಭೇ ।
ದುಷ್ಟಾಶಯೇಽಪಿ ಶುಭದೈವ ಭವನ್ನಿಷೇವಾ
ತತ್ತಾದೃಶಸ್ತ್ವಮವ ಮಾಂ ಪವನಾಲಯೇಶ ॥11॥

Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಸೇವನೇನ - by worshipping Thee; ದಿತಿಃ- - Diti; ಇಂದ್ರ-ವಧ-ಉದ್ಯತಾ-ಅಪಿ - though wanting to kill Indra; ತಾನ್-ಪ್ರತ್ಯುತ- - them, instead,; ಇಂದ್ರ-ಸುಹೃದಃ ಮರುತಃ- - Indra's friends Maruts; ಅಭಿಲೇಭೇ - begot; ದುಷ್ಟ-ಆಶಯೇ-ಅಪಿ - even for evil mind persons; ಶುಭದಾ-ಏವ - Thy worship; ಭವತ್-ನಿಷೇವಾ - gives good only; ತತ್-ತಾದೃಶಃ-ತ್ವಂ- - Thou who are thus; ಅವ ಮಾಂ - protect me; ಪವನ-ಆಲಯ-ಈಶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;

Translation
Diti, the mother of the Asuras, worshipped Thee in order to have a son who would kill Indra, but instead gave birth to Maruts who became friends of Indra. By worshipping Thee, even an evil minded person receives good only. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are like that, deign to protect me.
