ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತದನು ನನ್ದಮಮನ್ದಶುಭಾಸ್ಪದಂ ನೃಪಪುರೀಂ ಕರದಾನಕೃತೇ ಗತಮ್।
ಸಮವಲೋಕ್ಯ ಜಗಾದ ಭವತ್ಪಿತಾ ವಿದಿತಕಂಸಸಹಾಯಜನೋದ್ಯಮಃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ತದನು ನನ್ದಮ್- - after that to Nanda; ಅಮನ್ದ-ಶುಭ-ಆಸ್ಪದಮ್ - (who is) of non dimmed virtues the abode; ನೃಪ-ಪುರೀಮ್ - to the king's city; ಕರ-ದಾನ-ಕೃತೇ ಗತಮ್ - to pay his tributes (taxes), who had gone; ಸಮವಲೋಕ್ಯ - seeing (meeting); ಜಗಾದ ಭವತ್-ಪಿತಾ - said (to Nanda), Thy father (Vasudeva); ವಿದಿತ-ಕಂಸ- - who knew of Kansa's; ಸಹಾಯಜನ-ಉದ್ಯಮಃ - and Kansa's supporters' activities;
Translation
Thereafter, Nanda (who is the abode of undiminished virtues), went to the king's city to pay his tributes (taxes). On meeting him, Thy father Vasudeva who knew of the activities of Kansa and his supporters, told him that.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಯಿ ಸಖೇ ತವ ಬಾಲಕಜನ್ಮ ಮಾಂ ಸುಖಯತೇಽದ್ಯ ನಿಜಾತ್ಮಜಜನ್ಮವತ್ ।
ಇತಿ ಭವತ್ಪಿತೃತಾಂ ವ್ರಜನಾಯಕೇ ಸಮಧಿರೋಪ್ಯ ಶಶಂಸ ತಮಾದರಾತ್ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಅಯಿ ಸಖೇ - O friend!; ತವ ಬಾಲಕ ಜನ್ಮ - to you a son's birth; ಮಾಂ-ಸುಖಯತೇ-ಅದ್ಯ - gives me pleasure now; ನಿಜ-ಆತ್ಮಜ-ಜನ್ಮವತ್ - my own son's birth like; ಇತಿ ಭವತ್-ಪಿತೃತಾಂ - thus Thy fatherhood; ವ್ರಜನಾಯಕೇ ಸಮಧಿರೋಪ್ಯ - to the cowherd chief, (he cleverly) attributed; ಶಶಂಸ ತಮ್-ಆದರಾತ್ - and praised him with affection;
Translation
"O Friend! The birth of a son to you gives me pleasure as if a son were born to myself." Thus he cleverly attributed Thy fatherhood on Nanda, and praised him with affection.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಇಹ ಚ ಸನ್ತ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತಶತಾನಿ ತೇ ಕಟಕಸೀಮ್ನಿ ತತೋ ಲಘು ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ ।
ಇತಿ ಚ ತದ್ವಚಸಾ ವ್ರಜನಾಯಕೋ ಭವದಪಾಯಭಿಯಾ ದ್ರುತಮಾಯಯೌ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಇಹ ಚ ಸನ್ತಿ- - and here there are; ಅನಿಮಿತ್ತ-ಶತಾನಿ - bad omens in hundreds; ತೇ ಕಟಕ-ಸೀಮ್ನಿ - at your residence; ತತಃ ಲಘು ಗಮ್ಯತಾಮ್ - therefore soon (you) should go; ಇತಿ ಚ ತತ್-ವಚಸಾ - and thus, by his (Vaudeva's) words; ವ್ರಜನಾಯಕಃ - the cowherd chieftain (Nandagopa); ಭವತ್-ಅಪಾಯ-ಭಿಯಾ - to Thee danger apprehending; ದ್ರುತಮ್-ಆಯಯೌ - quickly returned;
Translation
"Here there are bad omens in hundreds and soon at your residence also it will not be safe, so you should return soon". Thus by Vasudeva's words, apprehending danger to Thee, Nanda quickly returned.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅವಸರೇ ಖಲು ತತ್ರ ಚ ಕಾಚನ ವ್ರಜಪದೇ ಮಧುರಾಕೃತಿರಙ್ಗನಾ ।
ತರಲಷಟ್ಪದಲಾಲಿತಕುನ್ತಲಾ ಕಪಟಪೋತಕ ತೇ ನಿಕಟಂ ಗತಾ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಅವಸರೇ ಖಲು ತತ್ರ ಚ - at that time, indeed, and there; ಕಾಚನ ವ್ರಜಪದೇ - some (female) in Gokula; ಮಧುರ-ಆಕೃತಿಃ-ಅಙ್ಗನಾ - beautiful looking woman; ತರಲ-ಷಟ್ಪದ- - (with) hovering bees; ಲಾಲಿತ-ಕುನ್ತಲಾ - around (her) locks of hair (due to the sweet smell); ಕಪಟ-ಪೋತಕ - (O Thou) in the guise of a child!; ತೇ ನಿಕಟಂ ಗತಾ - went near Thee;
Translation
Just then there in Gokula, some beautiful looking woman with honey bees hovering around the sweet smelling flowers in her hair locks, entered. O Thou! In the guise of a child, she approached Thee.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸಪದಿ ಸಾ ಹೃತಬಾಲಕಚೇತನಾ ನಿಶಿಚರಾನ್ವಯಜಾ ಕಿಲ ಪೂತನಾ ।
ವ್ರಜವಧೂಷ್ವಿಹ ಕೇಯಮಿತಿ ಕ್ಷಣಂ ವಿಮೃಶತೀಷು ಭವನ್ತಮುಪಾದದೇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಸಪದಿ ಸಾ - quickly she; ಹೃತ-ಬಾಲಕ-ಚೇತನಾ - who had taken the children' lives; ನಿಶಿಚರ-ಅನ್ವಯ-ಜಾ - of demon clan born; ಕಿಲ ಪೂತನಾ - indeed Pootanaa; ವ್ರಜ-ವಧೂಷು-ಇಹ - among the Vraja women here; ಕಾ-ಇಯಮ್-ಇತಿ - who is this, thus; ಕ್ಷಣಂ ವಿಮೃಶತೀಷು - for a moment wondering; ಭವನ್ತಮ್-ಉಪಾದದೇ - Thee lifted up (in her arms);
Translation
Quickly she, Pootanaa, born in the clan of demons, who had taken the lives of many children, lifted Thee up, even as the Vraja women were for a second wondering as to who she was.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಲಲಿತಭಾವವಿಲಾಸಹೃತಾತ್ಮಭಿರ್ಯುವತಿಭಿಃ ಪ್ರತಿರೋದ್ಧುಮಪಾರಿತಾ ।
ಸ್ತನಮಸೌ ಭವನಾನ್ತನಿಷೇದುಷೀ ಪ್ರದದುಷೀ ಭವತೇ ಕಪಟಾತ್ಮನೇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಲಲಿತ-ಭಾವ-ವಿಲಾಸ- - by her charming appearance and graceful movements; ಹೃತ-ಆತ್ಮಭಿಃ-ಯುವತಿಭಿಃ - with captivated minds, the young women; ಪ್ರತಿರೋದ್ಧುಮ್-ಅಪಾರಿತಾ - to deter (stop) not being able; ಸ್ತನಮ್-ಅಸೌ - her breasts this (Pootanaa); ಭವನ-ಅನ್ತ-ನಿಷೇದುಷೀ - inside the house sitting; ಪ್ರದದುಷೀ ಭವತೇ - gave (her breasts) to Thee; ಕಪಟ-ಆತ್ಮನೇ - the illusive child;
Translation
Her charming appearance and graceful movements captivated the minds of the Gopis who were unable to stop her from making advances. So this Pootanaa took her seat inside the house as she applied Thee, the illusive child, to her breasts.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸಮಧಿರುಹ್ಯ ತದಙ್ಕಮಶಙ್ಕಿತಸ್ತ್ವಮಥ ಬಾಲಕಲೋಪನರೋಷಿತಃ ।
ಮಹದಿವಾಮ್ರಫಲಂ ಕುಚಮಣ್ಡಲಂ ಪ್ರತಿಚುಚೂಷಿಥ ದುರ್ವಿಷದೂಷಿತಮ್ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಸಮಧಿರುಹ್ಯ ತತ್-ಅಙ್ಕಮ್- - climbing in her lap; ಅಶಙ್ಕಿತಃ-ತ್ವಮ್-ಅಥ - unhesitatingly Thou then; ಬಾಲಕ-ಲೋಪನ-ರೋಷಿತಃ - by the children' killing angered; ಮಹತ್-ಇವ-ಆಮ್ರ-ಫಲಮ್ - huge, as if it were a mango fruit; ಕುಚ-ಮಣ್ಡಲಂ ಪ್ರತಿ-ಚುಚೂಷಿಥ - the breast, sucked well; ದುರ್ವಿಷ-ದೂಷಿತಮ್ - with strong poison smeared;
Translation
Thou who were angered by her killing of the children, unhesitatingly climbed in her lap and sucked well her poison smeared breasts as if it were a huge mango fruit.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಸುಭಿರೇವ ಸಮಂ ಧಯತಿ ತ್ವಯಿ ಸ್ತನಮಸೌ ಸ್ತನಿತೋಪಮನಿಸ್ವನಾ ।
ನಿರಪತದ್ಭಯದಾಯಿ ನಿಜಂ ವಪುಃ ಪ್ರತಿಗತಾ ಪ್ರವಿಸಾರ್ಯ ಭುಜಾವುಭೌ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಅಸುಭಿಃ-ಏವ ಸಮಮ್ - her life breath along with; ಧಯತಿ ತ್ವಯಿ ಸ್ತನಮ್- - sucking (when) Thou were the breast; ಅಸೌ ಸ್ತನಿತ-ಉಪಮ-ನಿಸ್ವನಾ - this Pootanaa, with thunder like noise; ನಿರಪತತ್- - fell down; ಭಯದಾಯಿ ನಿಜಂ ವಪುಃ - ferocious her own body; ಪ್ರತಿಗತಾ - reverting to; ಪ್ರವಿಸಾರ್ಯ ಭುಜೌ-ಉಭೌ - out stretching both the hands;
Translation
Thou sucked the breast along with her life force. This Pootanaa fell down with a thunder like noise reverting to her natural ferocious body with both hands stretching out.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಭಯದಘೋಷಣಭೀಷಣವಿಗ್ರಹಶ್ರವಣದರ್ಶನಮೋಹಿತವಲ್ಲವೇ ।
ವ್ರಜಪದೇ ತದುರಃಸ್ಥಲಖೇಲನಂ ನನು ಭವನ್ತಮಗೃಹ್ಣತ ಗೋಪಿಕಾಃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಭಯದ-ಘೋಷಣ- - the terrifying sound; ಭೀಷಣ-ವಿಗ್ರಹ- - and the frightful form; ಶ್ರವಣ-ದರ್ಶನ- - hearing and seeing; ಮೋಹಿತ-ವಲ್ಲವೇ - (which) stunned the gopas; ವ್ರಜಪದೇ - and (the whole of) Gokul; ತತ್-ಉದರಃ-ಸ್ಥಲ- - on her chest; ಖೇಲನಂ ನನು - playing indeed; ಭವನ್ತಮ್-ಅಗೃಹ್ಣತ - Thee picked up; ಗೋಪಿಕಾಃ - the Gopis;
Translation
The whole of Gokul stood stunned hearing the terrifying sound and seeing the frightful form. The Gopis picked Thee up even as Thou were playing on the chest of the dead demoness.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಭುವನಮಙ್ಗಲನಾಮಭಿರೇವ ತೇ ಯುವತಿಭಿರ್ಬಹುಧಾ ಕೃತರಕ್ಷಣಃ ।
ತ್ವಮಯಿ ವಾತನಿಕೇತನನಾಥ ಮಾಮಗದಯನ್ ಕುರು ತಾವಕಸೇವಕಮ್ ॥10॥
Meaning
ಭುವನ-ಮಙ್ಗಲ- - O Thou who confers auspiciousness on the world!; ನಾಮಭಿಃ-ಏವ ತೇ - by Thy name alone; ಯುವತಿಭಿಃ-ಬಹುಧಾ - by the young women, in various ways; ಕೃತರಕ್ಷಣಃ ತ್ವಮ್-ಅಯಿ - Thou were protected, O Thou!; ವಾತನಿಕೇತನನಾಥ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; ಮಾಮ್-ಅಗದಯನ್ - making me devoid of ailments; ಕುರು ತಾವಕ-ಸೇವಕಮ್ - make me Thy devotee;
Translation
O Thou! Who confers auspiciousness on to the world, the young women protected Thee in various ways with chanting Thy names alone. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Making me devoid of my ailments, make me Thy devotee.
