ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅತೀತ್ಯ ಬಾಲ್ಯಂ ಜಗತಾಂ ಪತೇ ತ್ವಮುಪೇತ್ಯ ಪೌಗಣ್ಡವಯೋ ಮನೋಜ್ಞಮ್ ।
ಉಪೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ವತ್ಸಾವನಮುತ್ಸವೇನ ಪ್ರಾವರ್ತಥಾ ಗೋಗಣಪಾಲನಾಯಾಮ್ ॥1॥

Meaning
ಅತೀತ್ಯ ಬಾಲ್ಯಮ್ - passing childhood; ಜಗತಾಂ ಪತೇ - O Lord of the universe; ತ್ವಮ್-ಉಪೇತ್ಯ - Thou attained; ಪೌಗಣ್ಡ-ವಯಃ ಮನೋಜ್ಞಮ್ - the boyhood age (which was very) charming; ಉಪೇಕ್ಷ್ಯ ವತ್ಸಾವನಮ್- - giving up tending the calves; ಉತ್ಸವೇನ ಪ್ರಾವರ್ತಥಾ - enthusiastically got into; ಗೋ-ಗಣ-ಪಾಲನಾಯಾಮ್ - the looking after of the herd of cows;

Translation
O Lord of the universe! Having passed childhood Thou attained the charming age of boyhood (6 to 10 years). Then Thou gave up the tending of the calves and enthusiastically promoted to herding cows and cattle.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಉಪಕ್ರಮಸ್ಯಾನುಗುಣೈವ ಸೇಯಂ ಮರುತ್ಪುರಾಧೀಶ ತವ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಃ ।
ಗೋತ್ರಾಪರಿತ್ರಾಣಕೃತೇಽವತೀರ್ಣಸ್ತದೇವ ದೇವಾಽಽರಭಥಾಸ್ತದಾ ಯತ್ ॥2॥

Meaning
ಉಪಕ್ರಮಸ್ಯ- - for the beginning; ಅನುಗುಣ-ಏವ - it was proper indeed; ಸಾ-ಇಯಂ - that this; ಮರುತ್ಪುರಾಧೀಶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; ತವ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಃ - Thy occupation (because); ಗೋತ್ರಾ-ಪರಿತ್ರಾಣ- - (for) the earth's protection; ಕೃತೇ-ಅವತೀರ್ಣಃ- - as the purpose, was Thy incarnation; ತತ್-ಏವ - that itself; ದೇವ-ಆರಭಥಾಃ- - O Lord Thou started; ತದಾ ಯತ್ - then because;

Translation
O Lord! This occupation that Thou took up was the fit and proper beginning for the work which lay ahead. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Thy incarnation was for the protection of 'Gotra', the earth, and tending 'Gotras', the cows, was a first step towards that end.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕದಾಪಿ ರಾಮೇಣ ಸಮಂ ವನಾನ್ತೇ ವನಶ್ರಿಯಂ ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಚರನ್ ಸುಖೇನ ।
ಶ್ರೀದಾಮನಾಮ್ನಃ ಸ್ವಸಖಸ್ಯ ವಾಚಾ ಮೋದಾದಗಾ ಧೇನುಕಕಾನನಂ ತ್ವಮ್ ॥3॥

Meaning
ಕದಾಪಿ ರಾಮೇಣ ಸಮಂ - once along with Balaraam; ವನಾನ್ತೇ - in the end of the woods; ವನಶ್ರಿಯಂ ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ - the beauty of the woods admiring; ಚರನ್ ಸುಖೇನ - and roaming about happily; ಶ್ರೀದಾಮ-ನಾಮ್ನಃ - by the name of Shreedaamaa; ಸ್ವಸಖಸ್ಯ ವಾಚಾ - Thy friend's suggestion; ಮೋದಾತ್-ಅಗಾಃ - with joy went; ಧೇನುಕ-ಕಾನನಂ - to the Dhenuka forest; ತ್ವಮ್ - Thou;

Translation
Once, with Balaraam, as Thou were happily roaming about in the woods and admiring the beauty of the woods, on Thy friend Sudaamaa's suggestion, Thou enthusiastically entered the Dhenuka forest.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಉತ್ತಾಲತಾಲೀನಿವಹೇ ತ್ವದುಕ್ತ್ಯಾ ಬಲೇನ ಧೂತೇಽಥ ಬಲೇನ ದೋರ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ ।
ಮೃದುಃ ಖರಶ್ಚಾಭ್ಯಪತತ್ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ ಫಲೋತ್ಕರೋ ಧೇನುಕದಾನವೋಽಪಿ ॥4॥

Meaning
ಉತ್ತಾಲ-ತಾಲೀ-ನಿವಹೇ - (when) the tall palm tree clusters; ತ್ವತ್-ಉಕ್ತ್ಯಾ - at Thy words; ಬಲೇನ ಧೂತೇ-ಅಥ - by Balaraam was shaken, then,; ಬಲೇನ ದೋರ್ಭ್ಯಾಮ್ - with the force of both the hands; ಮೃದುಃ ಖರಃ-ಚ- - soft/ripe and hard/unripe; ಅಭ್ಯಪತತ್-ಪುರಸ್ತಾತ್ - fell down in front; ಫಲ-ಉತ್ಕರಃ - a bunch of fruits; ಧೇನುಕ-ದಾನವಃ-ಅಪಿ - the Dhenuka demon also; (ಖರಃ-ಚ ಅಭ್ಯಪತತ್) - (as a donkey appeared);

Translation
At Thy words, Balaraam shook the cluster of tall palm trees with the force of both his strong arms. A bunch of soft and ripe and hard and unripe fruits fell in front of Thee. Just then, the demon Dhenukaasura, in the form of a donkey also appeared.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸಮುದ್ಯತೋ ಧೈನುಕಪಾಲನೇಽಹಂ ಕಥಂ ವಧಂ ಧೈನುಕಮದ್ಯ ಕುರ್ವೇ ।
ಇತೀವ ಮತ್ವಾ ಧ್ರುವಮಗ್ರಜೇನ ಸುರೌಘಯೋದ್ಧಾರಮಜೀಘನಸ್ತ್ವಮ್ ॥5॥

Meaning
ಸಮುದ್ಯತಃ - engaged in; ಧೈನುಕ-ಪಾಲನೇ-ಅಹಂ - the cows' protection, I; ಕಥಂ - how; ವಧಂ ಧೈನುಕಮ್-ಅದ್ಯ - (can I) kill Dhenuka (even though just a namesake) now; ಕುರ್ವೇ ಇತಿ-ಇವ - do so , thus like that; ಮತ್ವಾ - thinking; ಧ್ರುವಮ್-ಅಗ್ರಜೇನ - certainly by Thy elder brother; ಸುರೌಘ-ಯೋದ್ಧಾರಮ್- - the enemy of the gods; ಅಜೀಘನಃ-ತ್ವಮ್ - caused to be killed Thou;

Translation
I am engaged in protecting the cows (Dhenuka), how can I now kill the Dhenuka (cow) asura?' Thus interpreting, as it were, Thou made Balaraam Thy elder brother kill Dhenukaasura who was an enemy of the gods.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತದೀಯಭೃತ್ಯಾನಪಿ ಜಮ್ಬುಕತ್ವೇನೋಪಾಗತಾನಗ್ರಜಸಂಯುತಸ್ತ್ವಮ್ ।
ಜಮ್ಬೂಫಲಾನೀವ ತದಾ ನಿರಾಸ್ಥಸ್ತಾಲೇಷು ಖೇಲನ್ ಭಗವನ್ ನಿರಾಸ್ಥಃ ॥6॥

Meaning
ತದೀಯ-ಭೃತ್ಯಾನ್-ಅಪಿ - his (Dhenukaasura's) servants also; ಜಮ್ಬುಕತ್ವೇನ-ಉಪಾಗತಾನ್- - (who were) as jackals and had come; ಅಗ್ರಜ-ಸಂಯುತಃ-ತ್ವಮ್ - along with Thy elder brother Thou; ಜಮ್ಬು-ಫಲಾನಿ-ಇವ - like black-berries; ತದಾ ನಿರಾಸ್ಥಃ- - then smashed; ತಾಲೇಷು ಖೇಲನ್ - on the palm trees as mere play; ಭಗವನ್ - O Lord; ನಿರಾಸ್ಥಃ - effortlessly;

Translation
Dhenukaasura's servants had also come in the form of jackals. O Lord! Thou and Thy elder brother, as if in mere play, smashed them effortlessly against the palm trees as though they were mere black-berries.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ವಿನಿಘ್ನತಿ ತ್ವಯ್ಯಥ ಜಮ್ಬುಕೌಘಂ ಸನಾಮಕತ್ವಾದ್ವರುಣಸ್ತದಾನೀಮ್ ।
ಭಯಾಕುಲೋ ಜಮ್ಬುಕನಾಮಧೇಯಂ ಶ್ರುತಿಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಂ ವ್ಯಧಿತೇತಿ ಮನ್ಯೇ ॥7॥

Meaning
ವಿನಿಘ್ನತಿ - when killing; ತ್ವಯಿ ಅಥ - Thou (were) then; ಜಮ್ಬುಕ-ಔಘಂ - the pack of jackals; ಸನಾಮಕತ್ವಾತ್- - because of having the same name; ವರುಣಃ-ತದಾನೀಮ್ - Varuna, then; ಭಯಾಕುಲಃ - out of fear; ಜಮ್ಬುಕ-ನಾಮ-ಧೇಯಂ - his name 'Jambuka'; ಶ್ರುತಿ-ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧಂ ವ್ಯಧಿತ- - famous in the Vedas, hid it (in the Vedas only); ಇತಿ ಮನ್ಯೇ - this I believe;

Translation
Then when Thou were killing the pack of jackals, Jambukas, Varuna, the water god, whose name is famous in the Vedas as Jambuka, hid it in the Vedas only, for the fear of being killed. I believe that it is for this reason that Varuna's name as 'Jambuka' is not known.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತವಾವತಾರಸ್ಯ ಫಲಂ ಮುರಾರೇ ಸಞ್ಜಾತಮದ್ಯೇತಿ ಸುರೈರ್ನುತಸ್ತ್ವಮ್ ।
ಸತ್ಯಂ ಫಲಂ ಜಾತಮಿಹೇತಿ ಹಾಸೀ ಬಾಲೈಃ ಸಮಂ ತಾಲಫಲಾನ್ಯಭುಙ್ಕ್ಥಾಃ ॥8॥

Meaning
ತವ-ಅವತಾರಸ್ಯ ಫಲಂ - Thy incarnation's results; ಮುರಾರೇ - O Slayer of Mura!; ಸಞ್ಜತಮ್-ಅದ್ಯ- - has appeared now; ಇತಿ ಸುರೈಃ-ನುತಃ ತ್ವಮ್ - thus by the gods, being praised, Thou; ಸತ್ಯಂ ಫಲಂ - truly fruit; ಜಾತಮ್-ಇಹ-ಇತಿ - is born here thus; ಹಾಸೀ ಬಾಲೈಃ ಸಮಂ - laughingly (saying) with the boys; ತಾಲ ಫಲಾನಿ- - the palm fruits; ಅಭುಙ್ಕ್ಥಾಃ - ate;

Translation
O Slayer of Mura! The gods praised Thee saying that the fruit of Thy incarnation has now appeared. Thou laughingly said that 'indeed the fruits of the palm tree have been got now', and saying so, ate the fruits with the boys.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಮಧುದ್ರವಸ್ರುನ್ತಿ ಬೃಹನ್ತಿ ತಾನಿ ಫಲಾನಿ ಮೇದೋಭರಭೃನ್ತಿ ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ।
ತೃಪ್ತೈಶ್ಚ ದೃಪ್ತೈರ್ಭವನಂ ಫಲೌಘಂ ವಹದ್ಭಿರಾಗಾಃ ಖಲು ಬಾಲಕೈಸ್ತ್ವಮ್ ॥9॥

Meaning
ಮಧುದ್ರವ-ಸ್ರುನ್ತಿ - with honey like juice dripping; ಬೃಹನ್ತಿ ತಾನಿ ಫಲಾನಿ - those large fruits; ಮೇದೋಭರ-ಭೃನ್ತಿ - full of flesh; ಭುಕ್ತ್ವಾ ತೃಪ್ತೈಃ-ಚ - having eaten and satisfied; ದೃಪ್ತೈಃ-ಭವನಂ - and triumphant, to the house; ಫಲೌಘಂ ವಹದ್ಭಿಃ- - loads of fruit carrying; ಆಗಾಃ ಖಲು - returned indeed; ಬಾಲಕೈಃ-ತ್ವಮ್ - with the boys, Thou;

Translation
Thou ate the nectar like juice dripping luscious and fleshy fruits with the boys to Thy heart's content. Fully satisfied and triumphant Thou returned to the house carrying along loads of such fruits.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಹತೋ ಹತೋ ಧೇನುಕ ಇತ್ಯುಪೇತ್ಯ ಫಲಾನ್ಯದದ್ಭಿರ್ಮಧುರಾಣಿ ಲೋಕೈಃ ।
ಜಯೇತಿ ಜೀವೇತಿ ನುತೋ ವಿಭೋ ತ್ವಂ ಮರುತ್ಪುರಾಧೀಶ್ವರ ಪಾಹಿ ರೋಗಾತ್ ॥10॥

Meaning
ಹತಃ ಹತಃ ಧೇನುಕಃ - killed killed is Dhenuka; ಇತಿ-ಉಪೇತ್ಯ - thus (saying and) approaching; ಫಲಾನಿ-ಅದದ್ಭಿಃ- - the fruits eating; ಮಧುರಾಣಿ - (which were) sweet; ಲೋಕೈಃ ಜಯ-ಇತಿ - by the people, 'Victory to Thee'; ಜೀವ-ಇತಿ - long live' thus; ನುತಃ ವಿಭೋ ತ್ವಂ - praised O Lord Thou; ಮರುತ್ಪುರಾಧೀಶ್ವರ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; ಪಾಹಿ ರೋಗಾತ್ - save from ailments;

Translation
O Omnipresent and Omnipotent Lord! The people approached Thee cheering that Dhenukaasura was killed. They praised Thee saying, 'Victory to Thee', 'May Thou live long', as they ate the sweet fruits. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Do save me from my ailments.
