ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವದ್ವಪುರ್ನವಕಲಾಯಕೋಮಲಂ ಪ್ರೇಮದೋಹನಮಶೇಷಮೋಹನಮ್ ।
ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ತತ್ತ್ವಪರಚಿನ್ಮುದಾತ್ಮಕಂ ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮುಮುಹುರನ್ವಹಂ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ವಪುಃ- - Thy form; ನವ-ಕಲಾಯ-ಕೋಮಲಂ - fresh Kalaaya flower like soft; ಪ್ರೇಮ-ದೋಹನಮ್- - evoking love; ಅಶೇಷ-ಮೋಹನಮ್ - (and) to everyone charming; ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ತತ್ತ್ವ- - Brahman in essence; ಪರಚಿತ್-ಮುದ್-ಆತ್ಮಕಂ - Supreme Consciousness, Bliss personifying; ವೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಸಮ್ಮುಮುಹುಃ- - seeing, were captivated; ಅನ್ವಹಂ ಸ್ತ್ರಿಯಃ - day by day, the Gopikas;
Translation
Day after day the Gopikas saw Thy form and were captivated. Thy form beautiful and fresh and soft like the Kalaaya flower, evoking the sentiment of love. Thy form charmingly enchanting everyone. Thy form, Brahman indeed, the personification of Existence, Reality, Supreme Consciousness and Bliss (Sat-Chit-Aananda).
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಮನ್ಮಥೋನ್ಮಥಿತಮಾನಸಾಃ ಕ್ರಮಾತ್ತ್ವದ್ವಿಲೋಕನರತಾಸ್ತತಸ್ತತಃ ।
ಗೋಪಿಕಾಸ್ತವ ನ ಸೇಹಿರೇ ಹರೇ ಕಾನನೋಪಗತಿಮಪ್ಯಹರ್ಮುಖೇ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಮನ್ಮಥ-ಉನ್ಮಥಿತ- - (by) Cupid churned; ಮಾನಸಾಃ ಕ್ರಮಾತ್- - minds, by and by; ತ್ವತ್-ವಿಲೋಕನ-ರತಾಃ- - Thee to see eager; ತತಃ-ತತಃ - again and again; ಗೋಪಿಕಾಃ- - the Gopikaas; ತವ - Thy; ನ ಸೇಹಿರೇ - did not bear; ಹರೇ - O Lord; ಕಾನನ-ಉಪಗತಿಮ್- - the proceeding to the forest; ಅಪಿ-ಅಹಃ-ಮುಖೇ - also at the beginning of the day;
Translation
O Lord! The minds of these Gopikaas were oppressed by Cupid and because of their love for Thee, they were always eager to see Thee. O Hari! By and by they were unable to bear the separation caused by Thy going to the forest early in the morning to tend the cows.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿರ್ಗತೇ ಭವತಿ ದತ್ತದೃಷ್ಟಯಸ್ತ್ವದ್ಗತೇನ ಮನಸಾ ಮೃಗೇಕ್ಷಣಾಃ ।
ವೇಣುನಾದಮುಪಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ದೂರತಸ್ತ್ವದ್ವಿಲಾಸಕಥಯಾಽಭಿರೇಮಿರೇ ॥3॥
Meaning
ನಿರ್ಗತೇ ಭವತಿ - (when) Thou had set out; ದತ್ತ-ದೃಷ್ಟಯಃ- - with fixed gaze (on Thee); ತ್ವತ್-ಗತೇನ - Thou unto; ಮನಸಾ - with (such) minds; ಮೃಗೇಕ್ಷಣಾಃ - the gazelle-eyed (women); ವೇಣು-ನಾದಮ್- - the flute sound; ಉಪಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ದೂರತಃ- - hearing from far; ತ್ವತ್- - Thy; ವಿಲಾಸ-ಕಥಯಾ- - sportive activities (narrating); ಅಭಿರೇಮಿರೇ - experienced great joy;
Translation
When Thou set out, the gazelle-eyed Gopikaas had their eyes fixed on Thee with their minds centred on Thee. They would listen to the sound of Thy flute from afar and revel in narrating and recounting Thy various sportive activities.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕಾನನಾನ್ತಮಿತವಾನ್ ಭವಾನಪಿ ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧಪಾದಪತಲೇ ಮನೋರಮೇ ।
ವ್ಯತ್ಯಯಾಕಲಿತಪಾದಮಾಸ್ಥಿತಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಪೂರಯತ ವೇಣುನಾಲಿಕಾಮ್ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಕಾನನ-ಅನ್ತಮ್- - into the forest; ಇತವಾನ್ ಭವಾನ್-ಅಪಿ - having gone, Thou also; ಸ್ನಿಗ್ಧ-ಪಾದಪ-ತಲೇ - under the cool tree; ಮನೋರಮೇ - (which was also) beautiful; ವ್ಯತ್ಯಯ-ಆಕಲಿತ- - by crossing placed; ಪಾದಮ್-ಆಸ್ಥಿತಃ - legs standing; ಪ್ರತ್ಯಪೂರಯತ - kept filling; ವೇಣುನಾಲಿಕಾಮ್ - the flute pipe;
Translation
Having gone to the forest, Thou would stand cross-legged under a shady beautiful tree and kept playing the flute and filling its pipe with life-breath.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಮಾರಬಾಣಧುತಖೇಚರೀಕುಲಂ ನಿರ್ವಿಕಾರಪಶುಪಕ್ಷಿಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್ ।
ದ್ರಾವಣಂ ಚ ದೃಷದಾಮಪಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ ತಾವಕಂ ವ್ಯಜನಿ ವೇಣುಕೂಜಿತಮ್ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಮಾರ-ಬಾಣ-ಧುತ- - by Cupid's arrows shaken; ಖೇಚರೀ-ಕುಲಂ - the celestial damsels; ನಿರ್ವಿಕಾರ- - motionless,; ಪಶು-ಪಕ್ಷಿ-ಮಣ್ಡಲಮ್ - animals and birds multitudes; ದ್ರಾವಣಂ ಚ - melting and; ದೃಷದಾಮ್-ಅಪಿ - stones even; ಪ್ರಭೋ ತಾವಕಂ - O Lord! Thy; ವ್ಯಜನಿ - was born; ವೇಣು-ಕೂಜಿತಮ್ - flute music;
Translation
O Lord! The music born out of Thy flute shook the celestial damsels with Cupid's arrows. It made the multitudes of animals and birds motionless, and even melted the stones and rocks.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ವೇಣುರನ್ಧ್ರತರಲಾಙ್ಗುಲೀದಲಂ ತಾಲಸಞ್ಚಲಿತಪಾದಪಲ್ಲವಮ್ ।
ತತ್ ಸ್ಥಿತಂ ತವ ಪರೋಕ್ಷಮಪ್ಯಹೋ ಸಂವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ಮುಮುಹುರ್ವ್ರಜಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ವೇಣು-ರನ್ಧ್ರ- - (on) the stops of the flute; ತರಲ-ಅಙ್ಗುಲೀ-ದಲಂ - moving of the tender finger (tips); ತಾಲ-ಸಞ್ಚಲಿತ- - to keep time tapping; ಪಾದ-ಪಲ್ಲವಮ್ - the tender feet; ತತ್ ಸ್ಥಿತಂ ತವ - that pose of Thee; ಪರೋಕ್ಷಮ್-ಅಪಿ- - not directly seen, even though; ಅಹೋ - what a wonder; ಸಂವಿಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ - thinking about again and again; ಮುಮುಹುಃ- - fell into a state of ecstasy; ವ್ರಜಾಙ್ಗನಾಃ - the women of Vraja;
Translation
Thy tender finger tips moved deftly on the stops of the flute, as Thou kept time tapping Thy tender feet. This pose of Thine the Vraja women visualised in their minds again and again and got into a state of ecstasy. Oh how wonderful!
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿರ್ವಿಶಙ್ಕಭವದಙ್ಗದರ್ಶಿನೀಃ ಖೇಚರೀಃ ಖಗಮೃಗಾನ್ ಪಶೂನಪಿ ।
ತ್ವತ್ಪದಪ್ರಣಯಿ ಕಾನನಂ ಚ ತಾಃ ಧನ್ಯಧನ್ಯಮಿತಿ ನನ್ವಮಾನಯನ್ ॥7॥
Meaning
ನಿರ್ವಿಶಙ್ಕ- - without any restrictions; ಭವತ್-ಅಙ್ಗ- - Thy form; ದರ್ಶಿನೀಃ ಖೇಚರೀಃ - being able to see, the celestial damsels; ಖಗ-ಮೃಗಾನ್ - birds; ಪಶೂನ್-ಅಪಿ - and animals also; ತ್ವತ್-ಪದ-ಪ್ರಣಯಿ - (with) Thy feet having contact; ಕಾನನಂ ಚ ತಾಃ - and the forest, they (the Gopikaas); ಧನ್ಯ-ಧನ್ಯಮ್-ಇತಿ - blessed blessed (they are) thus; ನನು-ಅಮಾನಯನ್ - indeed regarded (them to be);
Translation
The celestial damsels were able to see Thy form without restrictions or hindrance. The birds and animals and cows also could see Thy form directly. Even the forest/earth was always having contact with Thy feet and saw Thy form as Thou roamed about. The Gopikaas of Vraja regarded all of them very fortunate and blessed.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಆಪಿಬೇಯಮಧರಾಮೃತಂ ಕದಾ ವೇಣುಭುಕ್ತರಸಶೇಷಮೇಕದಾ ।
ದೂರತೋ ಬತ ಕೃತಂ ದುರಾಶಯೇತ್ಯಾಕುಲಾ ಮುಹುರಿಮಾಃ ಸಮಾಮುಹನ್ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಆಪಿಬೇಯಮ್- - (will) imbibe; ಅಧರ-ಅಮೃತಂ ಕದಾ - the nectar of the lips, when; ವೇಣು-ಮುಕ್ತ- - by the flute left over; ರಸ-ಶೇಷಮ್- - the last of the nectar; ಏಕದಾ - even once; ದೂರತಃ ಬತ - far fetched indeed; ಕೃತಂ ದುರಾಶಯ- - is made this greed; ಇತಿ-ಆಕುಲಾ - thus lamenting; ಮುಹುಃ-ಇಮಾಃ - again and again, these (Gopikaas); ಸಮಾಮುಹನ್ - were in great distress;
Translation
O when for once, we will imbibe the nectar of Thy lips, the last of it left over by the flute? Far fetched indeed is this greed.' Thus the Gopikaas lamented again and again and were in great distress and despair.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಹಂ ಚ ಪುನರಿತ್ಥಮಙ್ಗನಾಶ್ಚಿತ್ತಯೋನಿಜನಿತಾದನುಗ್ರಹಾತ್ ।
ಬದ್ಧರಾಗವಿವಶಾಸ್ತ್ವಯಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ ನಿತ್ಯಮಾಪುರಿಹ ಕೃತ್ಯಮೂಢತಾಮ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಪ್ರತ್ಯಹಂ ಚ ಪುನಃ- - every day and again; ಇತ್ಥಮ್-ಅಙ್ಗನಾಃ- - thus the women; ಚಿತ್ತಯೋನಿ-ಜನಿತಾತ್- - the Cupid's caused; ಅನುಗ್ರಹಾತ್ - blessings; ಬದ್ಧ-ರಾಗ-ವಿವಶಾಃ- - bonding into attachment and so helpless; ತ್ವಯಿ ಪ್ರಭೋ - towards Thee O Lord!; ನಿತ್ಯಮ್-ಆಪುಃ- - always attained; ಇಹ ಕೃತ್ಯ-ಮೂಢತಾಮ್ - here (in the worldly) concerns, indifference;
Translation
Day after day and again and again, in this manner, the Cupid caused promptings to the Gopikaas. This was, in a way, a blessing to them. As it made them so bonded in attachment towards Thee, that they became helpless and so always attained indifference in the worldly concerns.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ರಾಗಸ್ತಾವಜ್ಜಾಯತೇ ಹಿ ಸ್ವಭಾವಾ-
ನ್ಮೋಕ್ಷೋಪಾಯೋ ಯತ್ನತಃ ಸ್ಯಾನ್ನ ವಾ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ।
ತಾಸಾಂ ತ್ವೇಕಂ ತದ್ದ್ವಯಂ ಲಬ್ಧಮಾಸೀತ್
ಭಾಗ್ಯಂ ಭಾಗ್ಯಂ ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಂ ಮಾರುತೇಶ ॥10॥
Meaning
ರಾಗಃ-ತಾವತ್- - attachment indeed; ಜಾಯತೇ ಹಿ - comes; ಸ್ವಭಾವಾತ್- - in the natural course; ಮೋಕ್ಷ-ಉಪಾಯಃ - the means of liberation; ಯತ್ನತಃ ಸ್ಯಾತ್- - even with effort may be; ನ ವಾ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ - or may not be; ತಾಸಾಂ ತು- - for them (the Gopikaas) indeed; ಏಕಂ ತತ್-ದ್ವಯಂ - one that (served as) both; ಲಬ್ಧಮ್-ಆಸೀತ್ - were attained; ಭಾಗ್ಯಂ ಭಾಗ್ಯಮ್ - fortunate, fortunate, indeed; ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಂ - save me; ಮಾರುತೇಶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur;
Translation
Indeed, attachment comes in the natural course. In spite of much effort the means of liberation may or may not be achieved. For the Gopikaas attachment to Thee served as both, as they attained liberation as a result. Oh fortunate indeed they were. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
