ವ್ರಜೇಶ್ವರೈಃ ಶೌರಿವಚೋ ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ಸಮಾವ್ರಜನ್ನಧ್ವನಿ ಭೀತಚೇತಾಃ ।
ನಿಷ್ಪಿಷ್ಟನಿಶ್ಶೇಷತರುಂ ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಞ್ಚಿತ್ಪದಾರ್ಥಂ ಶರಣಂ ಗತಸ್ವಾಮ್ ॥1॥
Meaning
ವ್ರಜೇಶ್ವರಃ - the chieftain of Vraja (Nanda Gopa); ಶೌರಿ-ವಚಃ ನಿಶಮ್ಯ - the words of Vasudeva having heard; ಸಮಾವ್ರಜನ್-ಅಧ್ವನಿ - returning on the way; ಭೀತ-ಚೇತಾಃ - in utter fear (seeing); ನಿಷ್ಪಿಷ್ಟ-ನಿಶ್ಶೇಷ-ತರುಮ್ - crushed all the trees; ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಕಿಞ್ಚಿತ್-ಪದಾರ್ಥಮ್ - seeing (by) some indescribable object; ಶರಣಂ ಗತಃ-ತ್ವಾಮ್ - took refuge in Thee (prayed to Thee);
Translation
The chieftain of Vraja, Nanda Gopa, having heard the words of Vasudeva, was returning home in a hurry. On the way he saw an indescribable form falling down and crushing all the trees around. In utter fear he took refuge in Thee and prayed to Thee.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ಗೋಪೀವಚನಾದುದನ್ತಂ ಸರ್ವೇಽಪಿ ಗೋಪಾ ಭಯವಿಸ್ಮಯಾನ್ಧಾಃ ।
ತ್ವತ್ಪಾತಿತಂ ಘೋರಪಿಶಾಚದೇಹಂ ದೇಹುರ್ವಿದೂರೇಽಥ ಕುಠಾರಕೃತ್ತಮ್ ॥2॥
Meaning
ನಿಶಮ್ಯ ಗೋಪೀ-ವಚನಾತ್ - hearing, by the words of the Gopikas; ಉದನ್ತಮ್ - the news (story of Pootanaa); ಸರ್ವೇ-ಅಪಿ ಗೋಪಾಃ - all the Gopas; ಭಯ-ವಿಸ್ಮಯ-ಅನ್ಧಾಃ - by fear and wonder dumbfounded; ತ್ವತ್-ಪಾತಿತಮ್ - felled by Thee; ಘೋರ-ಪಿಶಾಚ-ದೇಹಮ್ - the terrible monster's (Pootanaa's) body; ದೇಹುಃ-ವಿದೂರೇ-ಅಥ - burnt far away, then,; ಕುಠಾರ-ಕೃತ್ತಮ್ - (the body) by axes cut (into pieces);
Translation
The Gopas came to know of the whole incident of Pootanaa from the Gopikas and they were dumbfounded with fear and wonder. They then proceeded to cut the body of the terrible monster who was killed by Thee, into pieces with axes and burnt it at a distance.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವತ್ಪೀತಪೂತಸ್ತನತಚ್ಛರೀರಾತ್ ಸಮುಚ್ಚಲನ್ನುಚ್ಚತರೋ ಹಿ ಧೂಮಃ ।
ಶಙ್ಕಾಮಧಾದಾಗರವಃ ಕಿಮೇಷ ಕಿಂ ಚಾನ್ದನೋ ಗೌಲ್ಗುಲವೋಽಥವೇತಿ ॥3॥
Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಪೀತ-ಪೂತ-ಸ್ತನ- - by Thee sucked, the purified breasts, from (them); ತತ್-ಶರೀರಾತ್ ಸಮುಚ್ಚಲನ್- - (from that body) rising up profusely; ಉಚ್ಚತರಃ ಹಿ ಧೂಮಃ - high up indeed the smoke; ಶಙ್ಕಾಮ್-ಅಧಾತ್- - (made) doubt to arise; ಅಗರವಃ ಕಿಮ್-ಏಷ - (smell) of agaru is this,; ಕಿಂ ಚಾನ್ದನಃ - (or) is it sandalwood; ಗೌಲ್ಗುಲವಃ-ಅಥವಾ- - or from gulgulu (frankincense); ಇತಿ - thus (the doubt);
Translation
The breasts of Pootanaa were made pure by Thy having sucked them. Therefore, when her body was burnt, huge volumes of smoke rose in the sky, so fragrant that it produced doubt in the minds of the people as to what it was - agaru, sandalwood, or gulgulu (frankincense) incense.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಮದಙ್ಗಸಙ್ಗಸ್ಯ ಫಲಂ ನ ದೂರೇ ಕ್ಷಣೇನ ತಾವತ್ ಭವತಾಮಪಿ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ।
ಇತ್ಯುಲ್ಲಪನ್ ವಲ್ಲವತಲ್ಲಜೇಭ್ಯಃ ತ್ವಂ ಪೂತನಾಮಾತನುಥಾಃ ಸುಗನ್ಧಿಮ್ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಮತ್-ಅಙ್ಗ-ಸಙ್ಗಸ್ಯ - of my body's contact; ಫಲಂ ನ ದೂರೇ - the fruit is not far; ಕ್ಷಣೇನ ತಾವತ್ - in no time then; ಭವತಾಮ್-ಅಪಿ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ - to you also will be (given); ಇತಿ-ಉಲ್ಲಪನ್ - thus saying (declaring); ವಲ್ಲವ-ತಲ್ಲಜೇಭ್ಯಃ - to the higher ones of the cow-herds; ತ್ವಮ್ - Thou; ಪೂತನಾಮ್-ಅತನುಥಾಃ - on Pootanaa conferred; ಸುಗನ್ಧಿಮ್ - fragrance (punya) (blessings);
Translation
Thou declared to the higher ones of the cowherd clan that the fruits of the contact with Thy body were not far behind, and that they too would get them soon. The conferring of fragrance / blessings on Pootanaa was, as though, to prove that.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಚಿತ್ರಂ ಪಿಶಾಚ್ಯಾ ನ ಹತಃ ಕುಮಾರಃ ಚಿತ್ರಂ ಪುರೈವಾಕಥಿ ಶೌರಿಣೇದಮ್ ।
ಇತಿ ಪ್ರಶಂಸನ್ ಕಿಲ ಗೋಪಲೋಕೋ ಭವನ್ಮುಖಾಲೋಕರಸೇ ನ್ಯಮಾಙ್ಕ್ಷೀತ್ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಚಿತ್ರಂ ಪಿಶಾಚ್ಯಾ - what a wonder, by the demoness; ನ ಹತಃ ಕುಮಾರಃ - was not killed the boy; ಚಿತ್ರಂ ಪುರಾ-ಏವ- - what a wonder earlier itself; ಅಕಥಿ ಶೌರಿಣಾ-ಇದಮ್ - it was said by Shauri (Vasudeva), this; ಇತಿ ಪ್ರಶಂಸನ್ - thus praising; ಕಿಲ ಗೋಪಲೋಕಃ - the cowherd people; ಭವತ್-ಮುಖ-ಆಲೋಕ-ರಸೇ - in the joy of looking at Thy face; ನ್ಯಮಾಙ್ಕ್ಷೀತ್ - immersed;
Translation
The cowherd people were wonder struck that the boy was not killed by the demoness. They also marvelled at the events foretold by Shauri Vasudeva. Realising this, they were fully immersed in the joy of looking at Thy face.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ದಿನೇದಿನೇಽಥ ಪ್ರತಿವೃದ್ಧಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀರಕ್ಷೀಣಮಾಙ್ಗಲ್ಯಶತೋ ವ್ರಜೋಽಯಮ್ ।
ಭವನ್ನಿವಾಸಾದಯಿ ವಾಸುದೇವ ಪ್ರಮೋದಸಾನ್ದ್ರಃ ಪರಿತೋ ವಿರೇಜೇ ॥6॥
Meaning
ದಿನೇ-ದಿನೇ-ಅಥ - day by day then; ಪ್ರತಿ-ವೃದ್ಧ-ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಃ- - increasing in prosperity; ಅಕ್ಷೀಣ-ಮಾಙ್ಗಲ್ಯ-ಶತಃ - (and) undiminished in numerous auspiciousness; ವ್ರಜಃ-ಅಯಮ್ - Gokul this; ಭವತ್-ನಿವಾಸಾತ್- - by Thy living there; ಅಯಿ ವಾಸುದೇವ - O Vaasudeva!; ಪ್ರಮೋದ-ಸಾನ್ದ್ರಃ - full of happiness; ಪರಿತಃ ವಿರೇಜೇ - every where shone;
Translation
O Vaasudeva! Day by day this Gokul developed with prosperity and undiminished auspiciousness as a result of Thy living there. Happiness and undecaying virtue shone everywhere.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಗೃಹೇಷು ತೇ ಕೋಮಲರೂಪಹಾಸಮಿಥಃಕಥಾಸಙ್ಕುಲಿತಾಃ ಕಮನ್ಯಃ ।
ವೃತ್ತೇಷು ಕೃತ್ಯೇಷು ಭವನ್ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಾಸಮಾಗತಾಃ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಹಮತ್ಯನನ್ದನ್ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಗೃಹೇಷು - in (their) house; ತೇ ಕೋಮಲ-ರೂಪ-ಹಾಸ- - Thy delicate form and smile; ಮಿಥಃ-ಕಥಾ-ಸಙ್ಕುಲಿತಾಃ - mutually narrated, gathering together; ಕಮನ್ಯಃ - the beautiful (Gopikas); ವೃತ್ತೇಷು ಕೃತ್ಯೇಷು - having completed their daily chores; ಭವತ್-ನಿರೀಕ್ಷಾ-ಸಮಾಗತಾಃ - to watch Thee, assembled; ಪ್ರತಿ-ಅಹನ್-ಅತಿ-ಅನನ್ದನ್ - every day, in great joy;
Translation
In their houses the beautiful Gopikas kept talking to each other about Thy charming form and smile. Having completed their daily chores they assembled in great joy to watch Thee.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಹೋ ಕುಮಾರೋ ಮಯಿ ದತ್ತದೃಷ್ಟಿಃ ಸ್ಮಿತಂ ಕೃತಂ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿ ವತ್ಸಕೇನ ।
ಏಹ್ಯೇಹಿ ಮಾಮಿತ್ಯುಪಸಾರ್ಯ ಪಾಣೀ ತ್ವಯೀಶ ಕಿಂ ಕಿಂ ನ ಕೃತಂ ವಧೂಭಿಃ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಅಹೋ ಕುಮಾರಃ - O! the boy; ಮಯಿ ದತ್ತ-ದೃಷ್ಟಿಃ - at me looked; ಸ್ಮಿತಂ ಕೃತಂ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರತಿ - smile was made in my direction; ವತ್ಸಕೇನ - by the child; ಏಹಿ-ಏಹಿ ಮಾಮ್-ಇತಿ - come come to me, thus; ಉಪಸಾರ್ಯ ಪಾಣೀ - stretching out the hands; ತ್ವಯಿ-ಈಶ - towards Thee O Lord!; ಕಿಂ ಕಿಂ ನ ಕೃತಂ ವಧೂಭಿಃ - what all was not done by the women;
Translation
O the boy is looking at me,' 'his smile is directed towards me', 'come, come to me', thus remarking they stretched out their hands to hold Thee. O Lord! What all was not done by the Gopikas endearingly.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಭವದ್ವಪುಃಸ್ಪರ್ಶನಕೌತುಕೇನ ಕರಾತ್ಕರಂ ಗೋಪವಧೂಜನೇನ ।
ನೀತಸ್ತ್ವಮಾತಾಮ್ರಸರೋಜಮಾಲಾವ್ಯಾಲಮ್ಬಿಲೋಲಮ್ಬತುಲಾಮಲಾಸೀಃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಭವತ್-ವಪುಃ- - Thy body; ಸ್ಪರ್ಶನ-ಕೌತುಕೇನ - in the eagerness to touch; ಕರಾತ್-ಕರಂ - from hand to hand; ಗೋಪ-ವಧೂ-ಜನೇನ - by the Gopika women; ನೀತಃ-ತ್ವಮ್- - were taken Thou; ಆತಾಮ್ರ-ಸರೋಜ-ಮಾಲಾ- - very red lotus garland; ವ್ಯಾಲಮ್ಬಿ-ಲೋಲಮ್ಬ- - (as though on it) moving about, a beetle; ತುಲಾಮ್-ಅಲಾಸೀಃ - resemblance Thou took on;
Translation
They passed Thee from hand to hand, each one of them eager to touch Thy body. As they did so, Thou looked like a honey beetle moving from one very red lotus to another strung together in a garland.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿಪಾಯಯನ್ತೀ ಸ್ತನಮಙ್ಕಗಂ ತ್ವಾಂ ವಿಲೋಕಯನ್ತೀ ವದನಂ ಹಸನ್ತೀ ।
ದಶಾಂ ಯಶೋದಾ ಕತಮಾಂ ನ ಭೇಜೇ ಸ ತಾದೃಶಃ ಪಾಹಿ ಹರೇ ಗದಾನ್ಮಾಮ್ ॥10॥
Meaning
ನಿಪಾಯಯನ್ತೀ ಸ್ತನಮ್- - feeding the breasts; ಅಙ್ಕಗಂ ತ್ವಾಮ್ - to who were in the lap, Thee; ವಿಲೋಕಯನ್ತೀ ವದನಮ್ - admiring the face; ಹಸನ್ತೀ - (and) smiling; ದಶಾಂ ಯಶೋದಾ ಕತಮಾಂ - states (of joy), Yashodaa, what all; ನ ಭೇಜೇ - did not attain; ಸ ತಾದೃಶಃ ಪಾಹಿ - That (Thee) who are such, save; ಹರೇ ಗದಾನ್-ಮಾಮ್ - O Lord Hari! Me from diseases;
Translation
O ! What states of joy did Yashodaa, Nanda's wife, not attain as she took Thee in her lap and suckled Thee, with her eyes fixed on Thy smiling face. O Lord Hari! Who are thus! May Thou save me from all ailments.
