ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತಸ್ತ್ವಮಥ ಲುಬ್ಧವದರ್ಕಲಬ್ಧಂ
ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಸ್ಯಮನ್ತಕಮಣಿಂ ಭಗವನ್ನಯಾಚೀಃ ।
ತತ್ಕಾರಣಂ ಬಹುವಿಧಂ ಮಮ ಭಾತಿ ನೂನಂ
ತಸ್ಯಾತ್ಮಜಾಂ ತ್ವಯಿ ರತಾಂ ಛಲತೋ ವಿವೋಢುಮ್ ॥1॥

ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತಃ- - from Satraajit; ತ್ವಮ್-ಅಥ - Thou then; ಲುಬ್ಧ-ವತ್- - greedy man like; ಅರ್ಕ-ಲಬ್ಧಂ - from the sun attained; ದಿವ್ಯಂ ಸ್ಯಮನ್ತಕ-ಮಣಿಂ - divine Syamantaka jewel; ಭಗವನ್-ಅಯಾಚೀಃ - O Lord Thou asked for; ತತ್-ಕಾರಣಂ - the reason; ಬಹು-ವಿಧಂ - many fold; ಮಮ ಭಾತಿ ನೂನಂ - to me appeals indeed; ತಸ್ಯ-ಆತ್ಮಜಾಂ - his daughter; ತ್ವಯಿ ರತಾಂ - in Thee infatuated; ಛಲತಃ ವಿವೋಢುಮ್ - by strategy to marry;
Translation
Thou then like a greedy man asked for the divine Syamantaka jewel from Satraajit who had got it from the Sun god. O Lord! The reasons for this may be many. What appeals to me indeed is that this was a strategy by which Thou wanted to marry his daughter (Satyabhaamaa) who was in love with Thee.

ಅದತ್ತಂ ತಂ ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಮಣಿವರಮನೇನಾಲ್ಪಮನಸಾ
ಪ್ರಸೇನಸ್ತದ್ಭ್ರಾತಾ ಗಲಭುವಿ ವಹನ್ ಪ್ರಾಪ ಮೃಗಯಾಮ್ ।
ಅಹನ್ನೇನಂ ಸಿಂಹೋ ಮಣಿಮಹಸಿ ಮಾಂಸಭ್ರಮವಶಾತ್
ಕಪೀನ್ದ್ರಸ್ತಂ ಹತ್ವಾ ಮಣಿಮಪಿ ಚ ಬಾಲಾಯ ದದಿವಾನ್ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಅದತ್ತಂ ತಂ - not giving that; ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಮಣಿವರಮ್- - to Thee the precious jewel; ಅನೇನ-ಅಲ್ಪ-ಮನಸಾ - by him the narrow minded; ಪ್ರಸೇನಃ-ತತ್-ಭ್ರಾತಾ - Prasena, his brother; ಗಲ-ಭುವಿ ವಹನ್ - in the neck wearing; ಪ್ರಾಪ ಮೃಗಯಾಮ್ - went hunting; ಅಹನ್-ಏನಂ ಸಿಂಹಃ - killed him the lion; ಮಣಿ-ಮಹಸಿ - in the jewel brilliance; ಮಾಂಸ-ಭ್ರಮ-ವಶಾತ್ - for flesh mistaking,; ಕಪೀನ್ದ್ರಃ-ತಂ ಹತ್ವಾ - the great monkey him (the lion) killing; ಮಣಿಮ್-ಅಪಿ ಚ - the jewel also and; ಬಾಲಾಯ ದದಿವಾನ್ - to (his) child gave;
Translation
The narrow minded one (Satraajit) did not give the precious jewel to Thee. His brother Prasena wore it round his neck and went away hunting. A lion mistook the jewel because of its brilliance to be a lump of flesh and so he killed Prasena. The great monkey (Jaambavaana) killed the lion and gave the jewel to his child.

ಶಶಂಸುಃ ಸತ್ರಾಜಿದ್ಗಿರಮನು ಜನಾಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಮಣಿಹರಂ
ಜನಾನಾಂ ಪೀಯೂಷಂ ಭವತಿ ಗುಣಿನಾಂ ದೋಷಕಣಿಕಾ ।
ತತಃ ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞೋಽಪಿ ಸ್ವಜನಸಹಿತೋ ಮಾರ್ಗಣಪರಃ
ಪ್ರಸೇನಂ ತಂ ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಹರಿಮಪಿ ಗತೋಽಭೂಃ ಕಪಿಗುಹಾಮ್ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಶಶಂಸುಃ - talked about; ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತ್-ಗಿರಮ್-ಅನು - Satraajit's words following; ಜನಾಃ-ತ್ವಾಂ ಮಣಿ-ಹರಂ - the people, Thou jewel thief; ಜನಾನಾಂ ಪೀಯೂಷಂ - for the people nectar like; ಭವತಿ ಗುಣಿನಾಂ - it is of the virtuous; ದೋಷ-ಕಣಿಕಾ - fault slightest; ತತಃ ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞಃ-ಅಪಿ - therefore knowing everything also; ಸ್ವ-ಜನ-ಸಹಿತಃ - Thy people along with; ಮಾರ್ಗಣ-ಪರಃ - to search intent; ಪ್ರಸೇನಂ ತಂ - that Prasen; ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಹರಿಮ್-ಅಪಿ - seeing the lion also; ಗತಃ-ಅಭೂಃ - went; ಕಪಿ-ಗುಹಾಮ್ - (into) the monkey's cave;
Translation
Influenced by the allegations of Satraajit, people suspected that Thou had stolen the jewel. Even a slight fault in the conduct of the virtuous person is like nectar for people in general, for it gives them a chance to slight that person. In spite of the fact that Thou knew everything about the jewel, Thou went in search for it with Thy men. Thou saw Prasena and the lion lying dead and thus were led to the monkey (Jaambavaan's) cave.

ಭವನ್ತಮವಿತರ್ಕಯನ್ನತಿವಯಾಃ ಸ್ವಯಂ ಜಾಮ್ಬವಾನ್
ಮುಕುನ್ದಶರಣಂ ಹಿ ಮಾಂ ಕ ಇಹ ರೋದ್ಧುಮಿತ್ಯಾಲಪನ್ ।
ವಿಭೋ ರಘುಪತೇ ಹರೇ ಜಯ ಜಯೇತ್ಯಲಂ ಮುಷ್ಟಿಭಿ-
ಶ್ಚಿರಂ ತವ ಸಮರ್ಚನಂ ವ್ಯಧಿತ ಭಕ್ತಚೂಡಾಮಣಿಃ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಭವನ್ತಮ್-ಅವಿತರ್ಕಯನ್- - Thee not identifying; ಅತಿ-ವಯಾಃ - due to age; ಸ್ವಯಂ ಜಾಮ್ಬವಾನ್ - himself Jaambavaan; ಮುಕುನ್ದ-ಶರಣಂ - to Mukunda surrendered; ಹಿ ಮಾಂ ಕಃ-ಇಹ - indeed me, who here; ರೋದ್ಧುಮ್-ಇತಿ-ಆಲಪನ್ - is to obstruct, thus saying; ವಿಭೋ ರಘುಪತೇ - O Lord Raama!; ಹರೇ ಜಯ ಜಯ-ಇತಿ-ಅಲಂ - O Hari! Victory to Thee! Thus; ಮುಷ್ಟಿಭಿಃ-ಚಿರಂ - with fists for long; ತವ ಸಮರ್ಚನಂ ವ್ಯಧಿತ - Thy worship performed; ಭಕ್ತಚೂಡಾಮಣಿಃ - the crest jewel of the devotees;
Translation
The aged Jaambavaan did not know Thy identity and so exclaimed, 'who has come to obstruct me who has Mukund as his only resort?' As, the crest jewel of the devotees, he was invoking Thee with "O Lord Raam! O Hari! Victory be to Thee!, he worshipped Thee with blows of his fists.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಬುಧ್ವಾಽಥ ತೇನ ದತ್ತಾಂ ನವರಮಣೀಂ ವರಮಣಿಂ ಚ ಪರಿಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ ।
ಅನುಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ನಮುಮಾಗಾಃ ಸಪದಿ ಚ ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತೇ ಮಣಿಂ ಪ್ರಾದಾಃ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಬುಧ್ವಾ-ಅಥ - recognizing (Thee) then; ತೇನ ದತ್ತಾಂ - by him was given; ನವ-ರಮಣೀಂ - to the young girl (his daughter); ವರ-ಮಣಿಂ ಚ - the precious jewel and; ಪರಿಗೃಹ್ಣನ್ - accepting; ಅನುಗೃಹ್ಣನ್-ಅಮುಮ್- - blessing him; ಆಗಾಃ ಸಪದಿ - returning immediately; ಚ ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತೇ - and to Satraajit; ಮಣಿಂ ಪ್ರಾದಾಃ - the jewel gave back;
Translation
Finally when Jaambavaan recognized Thee, he gave to Thee his young daughter and the jewel. Thou accepted them and blessed him, and immediately returned and gave back the jewel, the Syamantaka Mani, to Satraajit.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತದನು ಸ ಖಲು ಬ್ರೀಲಾಲೋಲೋ ವಿಲೋಲವಿಲೋಚನಾಂ
ದುಹಿತರಮಹೋ ಧೀಮಾನ್ ಭಾಮಾಂ ಗಿರೈವ ಪರಾರ್ಪಿತಾಮ್ ।
ಅದಿತ ಮಣಿನಾ ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಲಭ್ಯಂ ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ಭವಾನಪಿ
ಪ್ರಮುದಿತಮನಾಸ್ತಸ್ಯೈವಾದಾನ್ಮಣಿಂ ಗಹನಾಶಯಃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ತದನು ಸ ಖಲು - thereafter he indeed; ಬ್ರೀಲಾ-ಲೋಲಃ - shame filled with; ವಿಲೋಲ-ಲೋಚನಾಂ - with loving eyes; ದುಹಿತರಮ್-ಅಹೋ - the daughter Oh!; ಧೀಮಾನ್ - the intelligent one (Satraajit); ಭಾಮಾನ್ - Satyabhaamaa; ಗಿರಾ-ಏವ - by words only; ಪರ-ಅರ್ಪಿತಾಮ್ - given to another; ಅದಿತ ಮಣಿನಾ - gave (along with) the jewel; ತುಭ್ಯಂ ಲಭ್ಯಮ್ - to Thee, the worth getting; ಸಮೇತ್ಯ ಭವಾನ್-ಅಪಿ - having got, Thou also; ಪ್ರಮುದಿತ-ಮನಾಃ- - with a happy mind; ತಸ್ಯ-ಏವ-ಆದಾತ್- - to him only gave back; ಮಣಿಮ್ - the jewel; ಗಹನ-ಆಶಯಃ - deep thinking (Thou);
Translation
Satraajit, the intelligent one, was then filled with shame for his conduct with Thee. He had given away his roving eyed daughter Satyabhaamaa to someone verbally only. He gave her to Thee along with the jewel. Thou, happily, with Thy deep and unfathomable reasoning gave back the jewel, having got what was worth getting (Satyabhaamaa).

Meaning
ವ್ರೀಲಾ-ಆಕುಲಾಂ - by shyness overcome; ರಮಯತಿ ತ್ವಯಿ - (her) delighting (when) Thou were; ಸತ್ಯಭಾಮಾಮ್ - her Satyabhaamaa; ಕೌನ್ತೇಯ-ದಾಹ- - the son's of Kunti's burning; ಕಥಯಾ-ಅಥ - news, then; ಕುರೂನ್ ಪ್ರಯಾತೇ - Thou to Kurukshetra went away; ಹೀ - how shameful; ಗಾನ್ದಿನೇಯ-ಕೃತವರ್ಮ-ಗಿರಾ - by Akrura and Kritavarmaa's words; ನಿಪಾತ್ಯ ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತಂ - killing Satraajit; ಶತಧನುಃ-ಮಣಿಮ್-ಆಜಹಾರ - Shatadhanu the jewel took away;
Translation
When Thou were delighting the shy Satyabhaamaa, there was the news of Kunti's sons being burnt in the wax palace. So Thou went away to the land of the Kurus. Under the promptings of Akrura and Kritvermaa, Shatadhanu killed Satraajit and took away the jewel.

ಶೋಕಾತ್ ಕುರೂನುಪಗತಾಮವಲೋಕ್ಯ ಕಾನ್ತಾಂ
ಹತ್ವಾ ದ್ರುತಂ ಶತಧನುಂ ಸಮಹರ್ಷಯಸ್ತಾಮ್ ।
ರತ್ನೇ ಸಶಙ್ಕ ಇವ ಮೈಥಿಲಗೇಹಮೇತ್ಯ
ರಾಮೋ ಗದಾಂ ಸಮಶಿಶಿಕ್ಷತ ಧಾರ್ತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಶೋಕಾತ್ - due to grief; ಕುರೂನ್-ಉಪಗತಾಮ್- - to the country of Kuru's having come; ಅವಲೋಕ್ಯ ಕಾನ್ತಾಂ - seeing (Thy) wife; ಹತ್ವಾ ದ್ರುತಂ ಶತಧನುಂ - killing quickly Shatadhanu; ಸಮಹರ್ಷಯಃ-ತಾಮ್ - appeased her; ರತ್ನೇ ಸಶಙ್ಕ ಇವ - about the jewel doubting, as though; ಮೈಥಿಲ-ಗೇಹಮ್-ಏತ್ಯ - to the king of Mithila's abode reaching; ರಾಮೋ ಗದಾಂ - Balaraam the mace wielding; ಸಮಶಿಶಿಕ್ಷತ - taught well; ಧಾರ್ತರಾಷ್ಟ್ರಮ್ - to Duryodhana;
Translation
Satyabhaama was overcome with grief and went to Kurukshetra. Seeing her, Thou quickly killed Shatadhanu and made her happy. As though doubting the whereabouts of the jewel, Balaraam went to the abode of the king of Mithilaa. There he very well trained Duryodhana in the art of wielding the mace.

ಅಕ್ರೂರ ಏಷ ಭಗವನ್ ಭವದಿಚ್ಛಯೈವ
ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತಃ ಕುಚರಿತಸ್ಯ ಯುಯೋಜ ಹಿಂಸಾಮ್ ।
ಅಕ್ರೂರತೋ ಮಣಿಮನಾಹೃತವಾನ್ ಪುನಸ್ತ್ವಂ
ತಸ್ಯೈವ ಭೂತಿಮುಪಧಾತುಮಿತಿ ಬ್ರುವನ್ತಿ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಅಕ್ರೂರ ಏಷ - Akrura, this; ಭಗವನ್ - O Lord!; ಭವತ್-ಇಚ್ಛಯಾ-ಏವ - by Thy will alone; ಸತ್ರಾಜಿತಃ ಕುಚರಿತಸ್ಯ - of Satraajit, the notorious; ಯುಯೋಜ ಹಿಂಸಾಮ್ - caused the death; ಅಕ್ರೂರತಃ ಮಣಿಮ್- - from Akrura the jewel; ಅನಾಹೃತವಾನ್ ಪುನಃ-ತ್ವಂ - did not take back again Thou; ತಸ್ಯ ಏವ ಭೂತಿಮ್- - his alone prosperity; ಉಪಧಾತುಮ್- - to bring about; ಇತಿ ಬ್ರುವನ್ತಿ - so it is said;
Translation
This, Akrura, O Lord! By Thy will alone caused the death of the notorious Satraajit. It is said that with a mind to bring about his prosperity, Thou did not take back the jewel from Akrura.

ಭಕ್ತಸ್ತ್ವಯಿ ಸ್ಥಿರತರಃ ಸ ಹಿ ಗಾನ್ದಿನೇಯ-
ಸ್ತಸ್ಯೈವ ಕಾಪಥಮತಿಃ ಕಥಮೀಶ ಜಾತಾ ।
ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವಾನ್ ಪ್ರಶಮವಾನಹಮಿತ್ಯುದೀರ್ಣಂ
ಗರ್ವಂ ಧ್ರುವಂ ಶಮಯಿತುಂ ಭವತಾ ಕೃತೈವ ॥10॥
Meaning
ಭಕ್ತಃ-ತ್ವಯಿ - devoted to Thee; ಸ್ಥಿರತರಃ - very firmly; ಸ ಹಿ ಗಾನ್ದಿನೇಯಃ - that indeed Akrura; ತಸ್ಯ-ಏವ - his also; ಕಾಪಥ-ಮತಿಃ - evil mind; ಕಥಮ್-ಈಶ ಜಾತಾ - how O Lord! was produced; ವಿಜ್ಞಾನವಾನ್ - all knowing; ಪ್ರಶಮವಾನ್-ಅಹಮ್- - well self controlled am I; ಇತಿ-ಉದೀರ್ಣಂ ಗರ್ವಂ - thus bloated vanity; ಧ್ರುವಂ ಶಮಯಿತುಮ್ - certainly to curb; ಭವತಾ ಕೃತಾ-ಏವ - by Thee was brought about only;
Translation
Akrura was very firmly devoted to Thee. O Lord! How could there be an evil thought in his mind (of killing Satraajit and getting the jewel)? He was bloated with the vanity of having self knowledge and self control. Certainly to curb that, Thou brought this about.

ಯಾತಂ ಭಯೇನ ಕೃತವರ್ಮಯುತಂ ಪುನಸ್ತ-
ಮಾಹೂಯ ತದ್ವಿನಿಹಿತಂ ಚ ಮಣಿಂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ಯ ।
ತತ್ರೈವ ಸುವ್ರತಧರೇ ವಿನಿಧಾಯ ತುಷ್ಯನ್
ಭಾಮಾಕುಚಾನ್ತಶಯನಃ ಪವನೇಶ ಪಾಯಾಃ ॥11॥
Meaning
ಯಾತಂ ಭಯೇನ - having fled in fear; ಕೃತವರ್ಮಯುತಂ - Kritvarma along with; ಪುನಃ-ತಮ್-ಆಹೂಯ - again calling him; ತತ್-ವಿನಿಹಿತಂ ಚ - with him hidden and; ಮಣಿಂ ಪ್ರಕಾಶ್ಯ - the jewel bringing out; ತತ್ರ-ಏವ ಸುವ್ರತ-ಧರೇ - there only (him) with good deeds, endowed; ವಿನಿಧಾಯ ತುಷ್ಯನ್ - retaining and satisfying him; ಭಾಮಾ-ಕುಚಾನ್ತ-ಶಯನಃ - (on) Satyabhaamaa's bosom reclined; ಪವನೇಶ ಪಾಯಾಃ - O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me;
Translation
Akrura with Kritvarma fled in fear. Thou called him again and brought out the jewel hidden with him. Thou then let him retain the jewel who was of good conduct, and satisfied him. Thou then lived happily with Satyabhaamaa reclining on her bosom. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
