ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪೃಥೋಸ್ತು ನಪ್ತಾ ಪೃಥುಧರ್ಮಕರ್ಮಠಃ
ಪ್ರಾಚೀನಬರ್ಹಿರ್ಯುವತೌ ಶತದ್ರುತೌ ।
ಪ್ರಚೇತಸೋ ನಾಮ ಸುಚೇತಸಃ ಸುತಾ-
ನಜೀಜನತ್ತ್ವತ್ಕರುಣಾಙ್ಕುರಾನಿವ ॥1॥

Meaning
ಪೃಥೋಃ-ತು ನಪ್ತಾ - Prithu's great grand son; ಪೃಥು-ಧರ್ಮ-ಕರ್ಮಠಃ - intensely performing righteous deeds; ಪ್ರಾಚೀನಬರ್ಹಿಃ- - named Praacheenbarhi; ಯುವತೌ ಶತದ್ರುತೌ - through young Shatadruti; ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಃ ನಾಮ - by the name of Prachetas; ಸುಚೇತಸಃ ಸುತಾನ್- - pure minded sons (ten); ಅಜೀಜನತ್- - gave birth to; ತ್ವತ್-ಕರುಣಾ-ಅಙ್ಕುರಾನ್-ಇವ - like sprouts of Thy compassion embodied;

Translation
Prithu's great grand son Praacheenbarhis, who was reputed for his undertakings for the good of the world had the young lady Shatadruti for his wife. From her, as though sprouts of Thy compassion ,ten noble minded sons were born to him known by the group name of Prachetas.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪಿತುಃ ಸಿಸೃಕ್ಷಾನಿರತಸ್ಯ ಶಾಸನಾದ್-
ಭವತ್ತಪಸ್ಯಾಭಿರತಾ ದಶಾಪಿ ತೇ
ಪಯೋನಿಧಿಂ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಮೇತ್ಯ ತತ್ತಟೇ
ಸರೋವರಂ ಸನ್ದದೃಶುರ್ಮನೋಹರಮ್ ॥2॥

Meaning
ಪಿತುಃ ಸಿಸೃಕ್ಷಾ-ನಿರತಸ್ಯ - the father who was intent on creation; ಶಾಸನಾತ್- - by his direction; ಭವತ್-ತಪಸ್ಯಾ-ಅಭಿರತಾ ದಶ-ಅಪಿ ತೇ - those ten engrossed upon meditating on Thee; ಪಯೋನಿಧಿಂ ಪಶ್ಚಿಮಮ್-ಏತ್ಯ - going to the western sea; ತತ್-ತಟೇ ಸರೋವರಂ ಸನ್ದದೃಶುಃ- - on its shore saw a lake; ಮನೋಹರಂ - beautiful;

Translation
Commanded by their father to multiply the species, these ten brothers, being firm believers in the importance of Thy worship, went to the western sea to meditate. On the shore of that sea they saw a beautiful lake.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತದಾ ಭವತ್ತೀರ್ಥಮಿದಂ ಸಮಾಗತೋ
ಭವೋ ಭವತ್ಸೇವಕದರ್ಶನಾದೃತಃ ।
ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾಸಾದ್ಯ ಪುರಃ ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಾ-
ಮುಪಾದಿಶತ್ ಭಕ್ತತಮಸ್ತವ ಸ್ತವಮ್ ॥3॥

Meaning
ತದಾ ಭವತ್-ತೀರ್ಥಮ್-ಇದಮ್ - then this Thy holy lake; ಸಮಾಗತಃ ಭವಃ - frequented by Shiva; ಭವತ್-ಸೇವಕ-ದರ್ಶನ-ಆದೃತಃ - eager to see Thy devotees; ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮ್-ಆಸಾದ್ಯ - manifested himself; ಪುರಃ ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಾಮ್- - before the Prachetas; ಉಪಾದಿಶತ್ - and taught; ಭಕ್ತತಮಃ- - (himself) a great devotee to (Thee); ತವ ಸ್ತವಂ - Thy great hymn;

Translation
Then, Thy greatest devotee, Lord Shiva who is always eager to see Thy devotees, came to this holy lake of Thine and appearing before the Prachetaas, taught them a great hymn in praise of Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಸ್ತವಂ ಜಪನ್ತಸ್ತಮಮೀ ಜಲಾನ್ತರೇ
ಭವನ್ತಮಾಸೇವಿಷತಾಯುತಂ ಸಮಾಃ ।
ಭವತ್ಸುಖಾಸ್ವಾದರಸಾದಮೀಷ್ವಿಯಾನ್
ಬಭೂವ ಕಾಲೋ ಧ್ರುವವನ್ನ ಶೀಘ್ರತಾ ॥4॥

Meaning
ಸ್ತವಂ ಜಪನ್ತಃ-ತಮ್-ಅಮೀ - that hymn singing, these (Prachetaas); ಜಲ-ಅನ್ತರೇ - in the water; ಭವನ್ತಮ್-ಆಸೇವಿಷತ- - on Thee meditated; ಅಯುತಂ ಸಮಾಃ - for ten thousand years; ಭವತ್-ಸುಖ-ಆಸ್ವಾದ್-ರಸಾತ್- - because of the joy they were experiencing in meditating on Thee; ಅಮೀಷು- - for them; ಇಯಾನ್ ಬಭೂವ ಕಾಲಃ - such a long time passed; ಧ್ರುವವತ್-ನ ಶೀಘ್ರತಾ - like Dhruva it did not happen quickly;

Translation
These devotees chanting the hymn, spent ten thousand years in water, in Thy worship and meditation on Thee. For the attainment of the bliss of Thy realisation, they had to spend this long period in austerities unlike Dhruva who got it very quickly.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಪೋಭಿರೇಷಾಮತಿಮಾತ್ರವರ್ಧಿಭಿಃ
ಸ ಯಜ್ಞಹಿಂಸಾನಿರತೋಽಪಿ ಪಾವಿತಃ ।
ಪಿತಾಽಪಿ ತೇಷಾಂ ಗೃಹಯಾತನಾರದ-
ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿತಾತ್ಮಾ ಭವದಾತ್ಮತಾಂ ಯಯೌ ॥5॥

Meaning
ತಪೋಭಿಃ-ಏಷಾಮ್- - by their penance; ಅತಿ-ಮಾತ್ರ-ವರ್ಧಿಭಿಃ - which was increasing in intensity; ಸ ಯಜ್ಞ-ಹಿಂಸಾ-ನಿರತಃ-ಅಪಿ - he, though engaged in killing animals for the sacrifices; ಪಾವಿತಃ - became purified; ಪಿತಾ-ಅಪಿ ತೇಷಾಂ - (he) their father; ಗೃಹಯಾತ-ನಾರದ- - (to whose) house Naarada went; ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿತ-ಆತ್ಮಾ - (from Naarada) obtaining the knowledge of Aatman; ಭವತ್-ಆತ್ಮತಾಂ ಯಯೌ - attained to Thee;

Translation
By the increasing strength of their penance, their father Praacheenbarhis also became purified who had slain many animals in the sacrificial fires. Naarada who had gone to his house, gave him the knowledge of Aatman by which he attained a form like Thine.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಕೃಪಾಬಲೇನೈವ ಪುರಃ ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಾಂ
ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮಾಗಾಃ ಪತಗೇನ್ದ್ರವಾಹನಃ ।
ವಿರಾಜಿ ಚಕ್ರಾದಿವರಾಯುಧಾಂಶುಭಿ-
ರ್ಭುಜಾಭಿರಷ್ಟಾಭಿರುದಞ್ಚಿತದ್ಯುತಿಃ ॥6॥

Meaning
ಕೃಪಾ-ಬಲೇನ-ಏವ - by Thy compassion alone; ಪುರಃ ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಾಂ - before the Prachetas; ಪ್ರಕಾಶಮ್-ಆಗಾಃ - Thou manifested Thyself; ಪತಗೇನ್ದ್ರ-ವಾಹನಃ - having Garuda as vehicle; ವಿರಾಜಿ ಚಕ್ರ-ಆದಿ-ವರ-ಆಯುಧ-ಅಂಶುಭಿಃ- - lustrous by the resplendent discus and other divine weapons; ಭುಜಾಭಿಃ-ಅಷ್ಟಾಭಿಃ- - glorious with eight arms; ಉದಞ್ಚಿತ-ದ್ಯುತಿಃ - spreading lustre;

Translation
By virtue of Thy compassion alone, Thou appeared before the Prachetas. Thou were seated on Thy vehicle Garuda, having eight arms, holding the resplendent discus and other divine weapons and spreading lustre all around.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಾಂ ತಾವದಯಾಚತಾಮಪಿ
ತ್ವಮೇವ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯಭರಾದ್ವರಾನದಾಃ ।
ಭವದ್ವಿಚಿನ್ತಾಽಪಿ ಶಿವಾಯ ದೇಹಿನಾಂ
ಭವತ್ವಸೌ ರುದ್ರನುತಿಶ್ಚ ಕಾಮದಾ ॥7॥

Meaning
ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಾಂ ತಾವತ್- - to the Prachetas, then; ಅಯಾಚತಾಮ್-ಅಪಿ - though unsought for; ತ್ವಮ್-ಏವ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ-ಭರಾತ್- - Thou Thyself out of infinite compassion; ವರಾನ್-ಅದಾಃ - gave boons; ಭವತ್-ವಿಚಿನ್ತಾ-ಅಪಿ - even the thought of Thee; ಶಿವಾಯ ದೇಹಿನಾಂ ಭವತು- - may be for the benefit of the humans; ಅಸೌ ರುದ್ರನುತಿಃ-ಚ - this Rudra hymn also; ಕಾಮದಾ (ಭವತು) - may be a fulfiller of desires;

Translation
Out of Thy infinite compassion, Thou gave the Prachetas boons,even without their asking. May even Thy thought be for the benefit of the humans and confer welfare on them, and may the Rudra hymn be the fulfiller of all desires.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅವಾಪ್ಯ ಕಾನ್ತಾಂ ತನಯಾಂ ಮಹೀರುಹಾಂ
ತಯಾ ರಮಧ್ವಂ ದಶಲಕ್ಷವತ್ಸರೀಮ್ ।
ಸುತೋಽಸ್ತು ದಕ್ಷೋ ನನು ತತ್ಕ್ಷಣಾಚ್ಚ ಮಾಂ
ಪ್ರಯಾಸ್ಯಥೇತಿ ನ್ಯಗದೋ ಮುದೈವ ತಾನ್ ॥8॥

Meaning
ಅವಾಪ್ಯ ಕಾನ್ತಾಂ - getting as wife; ತನಯಾಂ ಮಹೀರುಹಾಂ - the daughter of the trees; ತಯಾ ರಮಧ್ವಂ - with her enjoy; ದಶಲಕ್ಷ-ವತ್ಸರೀಮ್ - for ten lakhs of years; ಸುತಃ-ಅಸ್ತು ದಕ್ಷಃ - may you have a son named Daksha; ನನು ತತ್-ಕ್ಷಣಾತ್- - immediately then; ಚ ಮಾಂ ಪ್ರಯಾಸ್ಯಥ-ಇತಿ - attain me also, thus; ನ್ಯಗದಃ - saying so; ಮುದಾ-ಏವ ತಾನ್ - pleasingly to them;

Translation
Being highly pleased with the Prachetas Thou blessed them that they would get the daughter of the trees as their wife. They would lead a happy life with her for ten lakh of years. Also that they would have a son named Daksha and soon thereafter they would attain Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತತಶ್ಚ ತೇ ಭೂತಲರೋಧಿನಸ್ತರೂನ್
ಕ್ರುಧಾ ದಹನ್ತೋ ದ್ರುಹಿಣೇನ ವಾರಿತಾಃ ।
ದ್ರುಮೈಶ್ಚ ದತ್ತಾಂ ತನಯಾಮವಾಪ್ಯ ತಾಂ
ತ್ವದುಕ್ತಕಾಲಂ ಸುಖಿನೋಽಭಿರೇಮಿರೇ ॥9॥

Meaning
ತತಃ-ಚ ತೇ - then they (the trees); ಭೂ-ತಲ-ರೋಧಿನಃ-ತರೂನ್ - which were covering the whole surface of the earth, the trees,; ಕ್ರುಧಾ ದಹನ್ತಃ - burning (the trees) in anger; ದ್ರುಹಿಣೇನ ವಾರಿತಾಃ - were stopped by Brahmaa; ದ್ರುಮೈಃ-ಚ ದತ್ತಾಂ ತನಯಾಮ್- - the trees gave their daughter; ಅವಾಪ್ಯ ತಾಂ - (they) getting her; ತ್ವತ್-ಉಕ್ತ-ಕಾಲಂ - for the duration mentioned by Thee; ಸುಖಿನಃ-ಅಭಿರೇಮಿರೇ - they lived happily;

Translation
Then the Prachetas who were angered by the dense growth of the trees which were covering the surface of the whole earth and causing obstruction, started to burn them. They were dissuaded by Brahmaa to do so. Obligingly the trees gave them their daughter in marriage and they lived with her happily for the time specified by Thee.

ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅವಾಪ್ಯ ದಕ್ಷಂ ಚ ಸುತಂ ಕೃತಾಧ್ವರಾಃ
ಪ್ರಚೇತಸೋ ನಾರದಲಬ್ಧಯಾ ಧಿಯಾ ।
ಅವಾಪುರಾನನ್ದಪದಂ ತಥಾವಿಧ-
ಸ್ತ್ವಮೀಶ ವಾತಾಲಯನಾಥ ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಮ್ ॥10॥

Meaning
ಅವಾಪ್ಯ ದಕ್ಷಂ ಚ ಸುತಂ - and getting the son named Daksha; ಕೃತ-ಅಧ್ವರಾಃ - (and) having performed Brahma Satra; ಪ್ರಚೇತಸಃ - the Prachetas; ನಾರದ-ಲಬ್ಧಯಾ ಧಿಯಾ - with the knowledge received from Naarada; ಅವಾಪುಃ-ಆನನ್ದ-ಪದಂ - attained the state of bliss; ತಥಾ-ಬಿಧಃ-ತ್ವಮ್- - Thou who are thus; ಈಶ - O Lord!; ವಾತಾಲಯನಾಥ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; ಪಾಹಿ ಮಾಮ್ - protect me.;

Translation
After begetting the son Daksha and performing several sacrificial rites and having received the highest knowledge from Naarada they attained liberation. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are of such merciful nature, grant protection to me.
