ಆನನ್ದರೂಪ ಭಗವನ್ನಯಿ ತೇಽವತಾರೇ
ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ ಪ್ರದೀಪ್ತಭವದಙ್ಗನಿರೀಯಮಾಣೈಃ ।
ಕಾನ್ತಿವ್ರಜೈರಿವ ಘನಾಘನಮಣ್ಡಲೈರ್ದ್ಯಾ-
ಮಾವೃಣ್ವತೀ ವಿರುರುಚೇ ಕಿಲ ವರ್ಷವೇಲಾ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಆನನ್ದ-ರೂಪ - Bliss personified; ಭಗವನ್-ಅಯಿ - O Lord! Thou; ತೇ-ಅವತಾರೇ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತೇ - (when) Thy incarnation approached; ಪ್ರದೀಪ್ತ-ಭವತ್-ಅಙ್ಗ- - lustrous Thy body; ನಿರೀಯಮಾಣೈಃ - emanating; ಕಾನ್ತಿ-ವ್ರಜೈಃ-ಇವ - rays of brilliance like; ಘನಾಘನ-ಮಣ್ಡಲೈಃ- - by groups of thick dark clouds; ದ್ಯಾಮ್-ಆವೃಣ್ವತೀ - the skies covering; ವಿರುರುಚೇ ಕಿಲ ವರ್ಷವೇಲಾ - shone indeed the rainy season;
Translation
Thou O Lord! Who are Bliss personified, when the time of Thy incarnation approached, the rainy season indeed shone with the lustre of Thy body, which emanated the blue rays of brilliance on the thick dark clouds that covered the skies.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಆಶಾಸು ಶೀತಲತರಾಸು ಪಯೋದತೋಯೈ-
ರಾಶಾಸಿತಾಪ್ತಿವಿವಶೇಷು ಚ ಸಜ್ಜನೇಷು ।
ನೈಶಾಕರೋದಯವಿಧೌ ನಿಶಿ ಮಧ್ಯಮಾಯಾಂ
ಕ್ಲೇಶಾಪಹಸ್ತ್ರಿಜಗತಾಂ ತ್ವಮಿಹಾವಿರಾಸೀಃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಆಶಾಸು - (when) all the directions; ಶೀತಲತರಾಸು - had been cooled well; ಪಯೋದತೋಯೈಃ- - by the rain waters; ಆಶಾಸಿತ- - what was desired for; ಆಪ್ತಿ-ವಿವಶೇಷು - (when) it was got, overwhelmed (by it); ಚ ಸಜ್ಜನೇಷು - by the good people; ನೈಶಾಕರ-ಉದಯ-ವಿಧೌ - and when the moon was rising; ನಿಶಿ ಮಧ್ಯಮಾಯಾಂ - at midnight; ಕ್ಲೇಶಾಪಹಃ- ತ್ರಿಜಗತಾಂ - the Remover of the sorrows of the three worlds; ತ್ವಮ್- - Thou; ಇಹ-ಆವಿರಾಸೀಃ - here ( on this earth) did appear;
Translation
When all the directions had been well cooled by the rain waters, when the virtuous people were overwhelmed with the joy of the impending fulfillment of their desires, and the moon was rising at midnight, Thou the remover of all sorrows, appeared here on this earth, embodied as Krishna.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಬಾಲ್ಯಸ್ಪೃಶಾಽಪಿ ವಪುಷಾ ದಧುಷಾ ವಿಭೂತೀ-
ರುದ್ಯತ್ಕಿರೀಟಕಟಕಾಙ್ಗದಹಾರಭಾಸಾ ।
ಶಙ್ಖಾರಿವಾರಿಜಗದಾಪರಿಭಾಸಿತೇನ
ಮೇಘಾಸಿತೇನ ಪರಿಲೇಸಿಥ ಸೂತಿಗೇಹೇ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಬಾಲ್ಯ-ಸ್ಪೃಶಾ-ಅಪಿ - though in the form of a child; ವಪುಷಾ - by body; ದಧುಷಾ ವಿಭೂತೀಃ- - Thou adorned the divine majesties; ಉದ್ಯತ್-ಕಿರೀಟ- - shining crown; ಕಟಕ-ಅಙ್ಗದ- - bracelets, shoulder ornaments; ಹಾರ್ ಭಾಸಾ - beautiful necklace; ಶಙ್ಖ-ಅರಿ- - conch, discus; ವಾರಿಜ-ಗದಾ - lotus mace; ಪರಿಭಾಸಿತೇನ ಮೇಘಾಸಿತೇನ - beautiful like the hue of rain bearing blue clouds; ಪರಿಲೇಸಿಥ - Thou shone; ಸೂತಿ ಗೇಹೇ - in the birth chamber;
Translation
Thou shone in the birth chamber, though in the from of a child, with Thy body adorned with the divine majesties, shining crown, bracelets, shoulder ornaments, beautiful necklace, conch, discus, lotus, mace, beautiful as the hue of the rain bearing clouds.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ವಕ್ಷಃಸ್ಥಲೀಸುಖನಿಲೀನವಿಲಾಸಿಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ-
ಮನ್ದಾಕ್ಷಲಕ್ಷಿತಕಟಾಕ್ಷವಿಮೋಕ್ಷಭೇದೈಃ ।
ತನ್ಮನ್ದಿರಸ್ಯ ಖಲಕಂಸಕೃತಾಮಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ-
ಮುನ್ಮಾರ್ಜಯನ್ನಿವ ವಿರೇಜಿಥ ವಾಸುದೇವ ॥4॥
Meaning
ವಕ್ಷಃ-ಸ್ಥಲೀ- - on Thy bosom; ಸುಖ-ನಿಲೀನ- - comfortably resting; ವಿಲಾಸಿ-ಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀ- - the glorious Lakshmi; ಮನ್ದ-ಅಕ್ಷ-ಲಕ್ಷಿತ- - casting with shyful eyes; ಕಟಾಕ್ಷ-ವಿಮೋಕ್ಷ-ಭೇದೈಃ - the side-glances glancing; ತತ್-ಮನ್ದಿರಸ್ಯ - of that house (the prison); ಖಲ-ಕಂಸ-ಕೃತಾಮ್-ಅಲಕ್ಷ್ಮೀಮ್- - the inauspiciousness caused by the evil Kansa; ಉನ್ಮಾರ್ಜಯನ್-ಇವ - dispersing away ,as though; ವಿರೇಜಿಥ ವಾಸುದೇವ - Thou did shine O Vaasudeva!;
Translation
O Vaasudeva! Thou did shine in that prison house with the glorious Lakshmi Devi comfortably resting on Thy bosom. The side glances of varied graces, with shyful eyes, cast by her, dispersed away the inauspiciousness of the prison caused by the wicked Kansa.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಶೌರಿಸ್ತು ಧೀರಮುನಿಮಣ್ಡಲಚೇತಸೋಽಪಿ
ದೂರಸ್ಥಿತಂ ವಪುರುದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ನಿಜೇಕ್ಷಣಾಭ್ಯಾಮ್ ॥
ಆನನ್ದವಾಷ್ಪಪುಲಕೋದ್ಗಮಗದ್ಗದಾರ್ದ್ರ-
ಸ್ತುಷ್ಟಾವ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಮಕರನ್ದರಸಂ ಭವನ್ತಮ್ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಶೌರಿಃ-ತು - Vasudeva indeed,; ಧೀರ-ಮುನಿ-ಮಣ್ಡಲ- - the group of sages; ಚೇತಸಃ-ಅಪಿ - to their minds also; ದೂರಸ್ಥಿತಂ - unapproachable; ವಪುಃ-ಉದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ - Thy form, on seeing; ನಿಜ-ಈಕ್ಷಣಾಭಾಮ್ - by his own eyes; ಆನನ್ದ-ವಾಷ್ಪ- - (with) tears of joy; ಪುಲಕ-ಉದ್ಗಮ- - horripilation; ಗದ-ಗದ-ಆರ್ದ್ರಃ- - choked and melting voice; ತುಷ್ಟಾವ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ- - sang Thy praises, for the sight (Thou who are); ಮಕರನ್ದ-ರಸಂ ಭವನ್ತಮ್ - nectar-like as for the bee.;
Translation
Thy form which is unapproachable to the minds of many aspiring sages, when Vasudeva saw with his own eyes, he had horripilation all over his body, his eyes were full of tears of joy and with a choked and melting voice he sang Thy prises, whose sight is like nectar honey for the bee like eyes.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ದೇವ ಪ್ರಸೀದ ಪರಪೂರುಷ ತಾಪವಲ್ಲೀ-
ನಿರ್ಲೂನದಾತ್ರಸಮನೇತ್ರಕಲಾವಿಲಾಸಿನ್ ।
ಖೇದಾನಪಾಕುರು ಕೃಪಾಗುರುಭಿಃ ಕಟಾಕ್ಷೈ-
ರಿತ್ಯಾದಿ ತೇನ ಮುದಿತೇನ ಚಿರಂ ನುತೋಽಭೂಃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ದೇವ ಪ್ರಸೀದ - O Lord! Be pleased; ಪರಪೂರುಷ - O Supreme being!; ತಾಪವಲ್ಲೀ- - the creeper of all sorrows; ನಿರ್ಲೂನ-ದಾತ್ರ-ಸಮ- - cutting down with sharp sword like; ನೇತ್ರ-ಕಲಾ-ವಿಲಾಸಿನ್ - with playful eyes; ಖೇದಾನ್-ಅಪಾಕುರು - remove all sufferings; ಕೃಪಾ-ಗುರುಭಿಃ ಕಟಾಕ್ಷೈಃ- - laden with compassion, by the side glances; ಇತ್ಯಾದಿ ತೇನ ಮುದಿತೇನ - thus by him (Vasudeva), who was filled with joy; ಚಿರಂ ನುತೋ-ಅಭೂಃ - for a long time, Thou were praised;
Translation
Thou were praised with prayers for a long time by Vasudeva who was filled with joy, saying that 'O Lord! cut down the creeper of all my sorrows with Thy sharp sword like playful eyes. O Supreme Being! Remove all my sufferings with Thy side glances laden with compassion.'
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ ನೇತ್ರಸಲಿಲಾಸ್ತೃತಗಾತ್ರವಲ್ಯಾ
ಸ್ತೋತ್ರೈರಭಿಷ್ಟುತಗುಣಃ ಕರುಣಾಲಯಸ್ತ್ವಮ್ ।
ಪ್ರಾಚೀನಜನ್ಮಯುಗಲಂ ಪ್ರತಿಬೋಧ್ಯ ತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ
ಮಾತುರ್ಗಿರಾ ದಧಿಥ ಮಾನುಷಬಾಲವೇಷಮ್ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಮಾತ್ರಾ ಚ ನೇತ್ರ-ಸಲಿಲ- - and by Thy mother's (Devaki), tears; ಆಸ್ತೃತ-ಗಾತ್ರ-ವಲ್ಯಾ - was covered well the body delicate creeper like; ಸ್ತೋತ್ರೈಃ-ಅಭಿಷ್ಟುತ-ಗುಣಃ - by hymns (Thee whose) excellences were praised; ಕರುಣಾಲಯಃ- ತ್ವಮ್ - Thou the abode of mercy; ಪ್ರಾಚೀನ-ಜನ್ಮ-ಯುಗಲಂ - (about) their two previous births; ಪ್ರತಿಬೋಧ್ಯ ತಾಭ್ಯಾಂ - explained the two of them; ಮಾತುಃ-ಗಿರಾ ದಧಿಥ - at the request of Thy mother assumed; ಮಾನುಷ-ಬಾಲ-ವೇಷಮ್ - the form of a human child;
Translation
And by Thy mother Devaki's tears whose delicate creeper like body was covered and made wet , Thy excellences were praised by hymns. Thou, the abode of mercy, then explained to them,Thy parents, about their two previous births. Then at the request of Thy mother Devaki, Thou assumed the form of a human infant child.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವತ್ಪ್ರೇರಿತಸ್ತದನು ನನ್ದತನೂಜಯಾ ತೇ
ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸಮಾರಚಯಿತುಂ ಸ ಹಿ ಶೂರಸೂನುಃ ।
ತ್ವಾಂ ಹಸ್ತಯೋರಧೃತ ಚಿತ್ತವಿಧಾರ್ಯಮಾರ್ಯೈ-
ರಮ್ಭೋರುಹಸ್ಥಕಲಹಂಸಕಿಶೋರರಮ್ಯಮ್ ॥8॥
Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಪ್ರೇರಿತಃ-ತದನು - by Thee prompted, then; ನನ್ದ-ತನೂಜಯಾ - with the daughter of Nanda; ತೇ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸಮ್-ಆರಚಯಿತುಮ್ - Thy inter-exchange to carry out; ಸ ಹಿ ಶೂರಸೂನುಃ - indeed, he the son of Shoorasena (Vasudeva); ತ್ವಾಂ ಹಸ್ಥಯೋಃ-ಅಧೃತ - Thee in his two hands took; ಚಿತ್ತ-ವಿಧಾರ್ಯಮ್-ಆರ್ಯೈಃ- - by the minds of the sages conceivable only (as though); ಅಮ್ಭೋರುಹ-ಸ್ಥ- - on a lotus sitting; ಕಲ-ಹಂಸ-ಕಿಶೋರ-ರಮ್ಯಮ್ - a swan young and beautiful;
Translation
At Thy prompting, in order to bring about Thy inter-exchanging with the daughter of Nanda, the son of Shoorasena Vasudeva took Thee in his two hands. Thou who can only be conceived in the minds of the sages, in Vasudeva's hands looked like an attractive young swan perched on a lotus.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಜಾತಾ ತದಾ ಪಶುಪಸದ್ಮನಿ ಯೋಗನಿದ್ರಾ ।
ನಿದ್ರಾವಿಮುದ್ರಿತಮಥಾಕೃತ ಪೌರಲೋಕಮ್ ।
ತ್ವತ್ಪ್ರೇರಣಾತ್ ಕಿಮಿವ ಚಿತ್ರಮಚೇತನೈರ್ಯದ್-
ದ್ವಾರೈಃ ಸ್ವಯಂ ವ್ಯಘಟಿ ಸಙ್ಘಟಿತೈಃ ಸುಗಾಢಮ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಜಾತಾ ತದಾ - was born then; ಪಶುಪ-ಸದ್ಮನಿ - in the house of the cowherd (Nanda); ಯೋಗ-ನಿದ್ರಾ - Yoga-Maayaa; ನಿದ್ರಾ-ವಿಮುದ್ರಿತಮ್- - in deep slumber; ಅಥ-ಅಕೃತ ಪೌರ-ಲೋಕಮ್ - thereafter, caused the people of the region; ತ್ವತ್-ಪ್ರೇರಣಾತ್ - at Thy behest; ಕಿಮ್-ಇವ ಚಿತ್ರಮ್- - what is so surprising in this; ಅಚೇತನೈಃ-ಯತ್-ದ್ವಾರೈಃ - when the inanimate doors; ಸ್ವಯಂ ವ್ಯಘಟಿ - opened by themselves; ಸಙ್ಘಟಿತೈಃ ಸುಗಾಢಮ್ - which were closed very well;
Translation
Thereafter, at Thy behest, Yoga-Maayaa, who was born in the house of Nandagopa, caused all the people in the region to fall into deep slumber. This is not at all surprising, considering that the well locked inanimate doors of the prison opened by themselves.

ಶೇಷೇಣ ಭೂರಿಫಣವಾರಿತವಾರಿಣಾಽಥ
ಸ್ವೈರಂ ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿತಪಥೋ ಮಣಿದೀಪಿತೇನ ।
ತ್ವಾಂ ಧಾರಯನ್ ಸ ಖಲು ಧನ್ಯತಮಃ ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥೇ
ಸೋಽಯಂ ತ್ವಮೀಶ ಮಮ ನಾಶಯ ರೋಗವೇಗಾನ್ ॥10॥
Meaning
ಶೇಷೇಣ ಭೂರಿ-ಫಣ-ವಾರಿತ - by Aadi Shesha's many hoods the warded off (waters); ವಾರಿಣಾ-ಅಥ ಸ್ವೈರಮ್ - the waters then comfortably; ಪ್ರದರ್ಶಿತ-ಪಥಃ - led along the way; ಮಣಿ-ದೀಪಿತೇನ - enlightened by the gems (on the hood of Aadi Shesha); ತ್ವಾಂ ಧಾರಯನ್ - carrying Thee; ಸ ಖಲು ಧನ್ಯತಮಃ - indeed he the most blessed one; ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥೇ - set out; ಸಃ-ಅಯಂ ತ್ವಮ್-ಈಶ - That This Thou O Lord!; ಮಮ ನಾಶಯ ರೋಗಾ-ವೇಗಾನ್ - eradicate the force of my ailments;
Translation
He, Vasudeva, the most blessed one set out carrying Thee in his hands. Aadi Shesha with his many hoods warded off the rain waters and led along the way by him with the gems on his hood s enlightening the way. O Lord! Of such exceeding prowess deign to save me from my forceful ailments.
