ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ ದೈತ್ಯಸ್ತವ ತನುಮಹಃಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣಾತ್ ಸರ್ವಥಾಽಪಿ
ತ್ವಾಮಾರಾಧ್ಯನ್ನಜಿತ ರಚಯನ್ನಞ್ಜಲಿಂ ಸಞ್ಜಗಾದ ।
ಮತ್ತಃ ಕಿಂ ತೇ ಸಮಭಿಲಷಿತಂ ವಿಪ್ರಸೂನೋ ವದ ತ್ವಂ
ವಿತ್ತಂ ಭಕ್ತಂ ಭವನಮವನೀಂ ವಾಽಪಿ ಸರ್ವಂ ಪ್ರದಾಸ್ಯೇ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಪ್ರೀತ್ಯಾ - pleased; ದೈತ್ಯಃ-ತವ - the Asura, Thy; ತನುಮ್-ಅಹಃ- - majestic form, oh!; ಪ್ರೇಕ್ಷಣಾತ್ - on seeing; ಸರ್ವಥಾ-ಅಪಿ - in every way; ತ್ವಾಮ್-ಆರಾಧ್ಯನ್ - honouring Thee; ಅಜಿತ - O Invincible One!; ರಚಯನ್-ಅಞ್ಜಲಿಂ - with folded palms; ಸಞ್ಜಗಾದ್ - said; ಮತ್ತಃ - 'from me; ಕಿಂ ತೇ ಸಮಭಿಲಷಿತಂ - what by you is desired; ವಿಪ್ರಸೂನೋ ವದ ತ್ವಂ - O Braahmin boy! you say; ವಿತ್ತಂ ಭಕ್ತಂ ಭವನಮ್-ಅವನೀಮ್ - wealth, food, house, land,; ವಾ-ಅಪಿ ಸರ್ವಂ - or even all of them; ಪ್ರದಾಸ್ಯೇ - I shall give';
Translation
Impressed on seeing Thy glorious majestic sight, the Asura Bali honoured and worshipped Thee in every way. He said with folded palms 'What do you desire from me? O Braahmin boy, you say, is it wealth, food, house or land or everything. I shall give you all.'
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಾಮೀಕ್ಷಣಾಂ ಬಲಿಗಿರಮುಪಾಕರ್ಣ್ಯ ಕಾರುಣ್ಯಪೂರ್ಣೋಽ-
ಪ್ಯಸ್ಯೋತ್ಸೇಕಂ ಶಮಯಿತುಮನಾ ದೈತ್ಯವಂಶಂ ಪ್ರಶಂಸನ್ ।
ಭೂಮಿಂ ಪಾದತ್ರಯಪರಿಮಿತಾಂ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಯಾಮಾಸಿಥ ತ್ವಂ
ಸರ್ವಂ ದೇಹೀತಿ ತು ನಿಗದಿತೇ ಕಸ್ಯ ಹಾಸ್ಯಂ ನ ವಾ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ ॥2॥
Meaning
ತಾಮ್-ಅಕ್ಷೀಣಾಂ ಬಲಿ-ಗಿರಮ್- - that bold voice of Bali; ಉಪಾಕರ್ಣ್ಯ - on hearing; ಕಾರುಣ್ಯ-ಪೂರ್ಣಃ-ಅಪಿ - though full of compassion; ಅಸ್ಯ-ಉತ್ಸೇಕಂ - his (Bali's) pride; ಶಮಯಿತುಮನಾ - desirous of curbing; ದೈತ್ಯ-ವಂಶಂ ಪ್ರಶಂಸನ್ - the lineage of the Asuras praising; ಭೂಮಿಂ ಪಾದ-ತ್ರಯ-ಪರಿಮಿತಾಂ - earth, by three steps (of thy feet) measurable; ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥಯಾಮಾಸಿಥ ತ್ವಂ - asked for Thou; ಸರ್ವಂ ದೇಹಿ-ಇತಿ - give everything' thus; ತು ನಿಗದಿತೇ - indeed having said; ಕಸ್ಯ ಹಾಸ್ಯಂ - whose sneer (ridicule); ನ ವಾ ಸ್ಯಾತ್ - would not be invited;
Translation
On hearing those bold words of Bali, though filled with compassion Thou were desirous of curbing his pride. Speaking highly of the generosity of the Asura clan, Thou asked for earth measurable by Thy three steps. To ask for all, would have invited sneer from everyone.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ವಿಶ್ವೇಶಂ ಮಾಂ ತ್ರಿಪದಮಿಹ ಕಿಂ ಯಾಚಸೇ ಬಾಲಿಶಸ್ತ್ವಂ
ಸರ್ವಾಂ ಭೂಮಿಂ ವೃಣು ಕಿಮಮುನೇತ್ಯಾಲಪತ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಸ ದೃಪ್ಯನ್ ।
ಯಸ್ಮಾದ್ದರ್ಪಾತ್ ತ್ರಿಪದಪರಿಪೂರ್ತ್ಯಕ್ಷಮಃ ಕ್ಷೇಪವಾದಾನ್
ಬನ್ಧಂ ಚಾಸಾವಗಮದತದರ್ಹೋಽಪಿ ಗಾಢೋಪಶಾನ್ತ್ಯೈ ॥3॥
Meaning
ವಿಶ್ವೇಶಂ ಮಾಂ - (who is ) the lord of the three worlds, to me; ತ್ರಿಪದಮ್-ಇಹ ಕಿಂ ಯಾಚಸೇ - for (mere) three paces of earth, how do you ask; ಬಾಲಿಶಃ-ತ್ವಂ - simpleton you; ಸರ್ವಾಂ ಭೂಮಿಂ ವೃಣು - the whole earth ask for; ಕಿಮ್-ಅಮುನಾ- - of what use is this; ಇತಿ-ಆಲಪತ್-ತ್ವಾಂ - thus telling Thee; ಸ ದೃಪ್ಯನ್ - he (said) proudly; ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್-ದರ್ಪಾತ್ - because of which pride; ತ್ರಿಪದ-ಪರಿಪೂರ್ತಿ-ಅಕ್ಷಮಃ - three paces even fully failing (to give); ಕ್ಷೇಪವಾದಾನ್ - and inviting ridicule; ಬನ್ಧಂ ಚ- - and bondage; ಅಸೌ-ಅಗಮತ್- - this (Bali) was subjected to (received); ಅತದರ್ಹಃ-ಅಪಿ - (though) not deserving even; ಗಾಢೋಪಶಾನ್ತ್ಯೈ - for (acquiring) complete detachment;
Translation
To me, who is the lord of all the three worlds how do you ask for mere three paces of earth? You simpleton! Of what use is this? Ask for the whole earth.' Thus he proudly told Thee. Because of this pride he failed to give fully even three paces of earth and invited ridicule and bondage. Bali did not deserve it but he was subjected to all this for acquiring complete detachment.

ಪಾದತ್ರಯ್ಯಾ ಯದಿ ನ ಮುದಿತೋ ವಿಷ್ಟಪೈರ್ನಾಪಿ ತುಷ್ಯೇ-

ಮಾ ಮಾ ದೇಯಂ ಹರಿರಯಮಿತಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಮೇವಾಬಭಾಷೇ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಪಾದತ್ರಯ್ಯಾ - with three steps; ಯದಿ ನ ಮುದಿತಃ - if (one) is not satisfied; ವಿಷ್ಟಪೈಃ-ನ-ಅಪಿ - even by the three worlds will not; ತುಷ್ಯೇತ್- - be satisfied; ಇತಿ-ಉಕ್ತೇ-ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ - thus having said to him; ವರದ - O Bestower of Boons!; ಭವತೇ ದಾತುಕಾಮೇ-ಅಥ - then, to Thee as (he) was wanting to give; ತೋಯಮ್ - water; ದೈತ್ಯ-ಆಚಾರ್ಯಃ- - the Asuras' Guru (Shukraacharya); ತವ ಖಲು ಪರೀಕ್ಷಾರ್ಥಿನಃ - indeed by Thy desire to test (Bali); ಪ್ರೇರಣಾತ್- - (and by) Thy prompting; ತಂ ಮಾ ಮಾ ದೇಯಂ - to him, do not do not give; ಹರಿಃ-ಅಯಮ್-ಇತಿ - Hari this is, thus; ವ್ಯಕ್ತಮ್-ಏವ-ಆಬಭಾಷೇ - openly (clearly) told (him);
Translation
O Bestower of Boons! When Thou told him that he who is not satisfied with three steps of land will not be satisfied even by the three worlds, Bali was about to pour the pre-gift oblation water to Thee. To test Bali's integrity, and so by Thy prompting the Guru of Asuras, Shukraachaarya, told him clearly to refrain from giving the gift since Thou were Hari.

Meaning
ಯಾಚತಿ-ಏವಂ ಯದಿ - begging thus if He is; ಸ ಭಗವಾನ್ - That Lord; ಪೂರ್ಣಕಾಮಃ-ಅಸ್ಮಿ - the one whose desires are fulfilled; ಸಃ-ಅಹಂ - that I am; ದಾಸ್ಯಾಮಿ-ಏವ ಸ್ಥಿರಮ್-ಇತಿ ವದನ್ - (I) shall give, certainly, thus saying; ಕಾವ್ಯ-ಶಪ್ತಃ-ಅಪಿ ದೈತ್ಯಃ - though cursed by Kaavya (Shukraachaarya); ವಿನ್ಧ್ಯಾವಲ್ಯಾ - by Vindhyaavalya; ನಿಜ-ದಯಿತಯಾ - by his wife; ದತ್ತ-ಪಾದ್ಯಾಯ ತುಭ್ಯಂ - to Thee whom the water for washing the feet had already been given; ಚಿತ್ರಂ ಚಿತ್ರಂ - how wonderful; ಸಕಲಮ್-ಅಪಿ ಸ - everything also he (Bali); ಪ್ರಾರ್ಪಯತ್-ತೋಯ-ಪೂರ್ವಮ್ - offered even before the water;
Translation
Bali firmly said that he would consider himself blessed if the Lord himself comes begging to him thus, and so he would certainly make the gift. For such a disobedience Kaavya, (Shukraachaarya) cursed him. Then, to Thee whose feet had already been washed by the waters poured by Bali's wife Vindhyaavali, he proceeded to offer everything with the pouring of the water. How wonderful!
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿಸ್ಸನ್ದೇಹಂ ದಿತಿಕುಲಪತೌ ತ್ವಯ್ಯಶೇಷಾರ್ಪಣಂ ತದ್-
ವ್ಯಾತನ್ವಾನೇ ಮುಮುಚುಃ-ಋಷಯಃ ಸಾಮರಾಃ ಪುಷ್ಪವರ್ಷಮ್ ।
ದಿವ್ಯಂ ರೂಪಂ ತವ ಚ ತದಿದಂ ಪಶ್ಯತಾಂ ವಿಶ್ವಭಾಜಾ-
ಮುಚ್ಚೈರುಚ್ಚೈರವೃಧದವಧೀಕೃತ್ಯ ವಿಶ್ವಾಣ್ಡಭಾಣ್ಡಮ್ ॥6॥
Meaning
ನಿಸ್ಸನ್ದೇಹಂ - without any doubt or hesitation; ದಿತಿಕುಲಪತೌ - (when) by the Asura king; ತ್ವಯಿ-ಅಶೇಷ-ಅರ್ಪಣಂ - to Thee everything was offered; ತತ್ ವ್ಯಾತನ್ವಾನೇ - and that was given; ಮುಮುಚುಃ ಋಷಯಃ - showered sages; ಸಾಮರಾಃ - along with the Devas; ಪುಷ್ಪವರ್ಷಮ್ - a rain of flowers; ದಿವ್ಯಂ ರೂಪಂ ತವ ಚ - and that divine form of thine (as Vaamana); ತತ್-ಇದಂ ಪಶ್ಯತಾಂ - that which was seen; ವಿಶ್ವಭಾಜಾಮ್- - by the inhabitants of the three worlds; ಉಚ್ಚೈಃ-ಉಚ್ಚೈಃ-ಅವೃಧತ್- - higher and higher increased (grew); ಅವಧೀಕೃತ್ಯ - extending to the dimension; ವಿಶ್ವ-ಅಣ್ಡ-ಭಾಣ್ಡಮ್ - of the world's cosmic sphere;
Translation
When the Asura king Bali, without any doubt and hesitation offered and gave to Thee everything, the sages and the Devas shed a rain of flowers. As all the inhabitants of the three worlds looked on, that divine form of Thine as Vaamana, increased higher and higher extending to the dimension of the cosmic sphere.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತ್ವತ್ಪಾದಾಗ್ರಂ ನಿಜಪದಗತಂ ಪುಣ್ಡರೀಕೋದ್ಭವೋಽಸೌ
ಕುಣ್ಡೀತೋಯೈರಸಿಚದಪುನಾದ್ಯಜ್ಜಲಂ ವಿಶ್ವಲೋಕಾನ್ ।
ಹರ್ಷೋತ್ಕರ್ಷಾತ್ ಸುಬಹು ನನೃತೇ ಖೇಚರೈರುತ್ಸವೇಽಸ್ಮಿನ್
ಭೇರೀಂ ನಿಘ್ನನ್ ಭುವನಮಚರಜ್ಜಾಮ್ಬವಾನ್ ಭಕ್ತಿಶಾಲೀ ॥7॥
Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಪಾದ್-ಅಗ್ರಂ - the tip of Thy foot; ನಿಜ-ಪದ-ಗತಂ - (when) it reached its own realm (of Satyaloka); ಪುಣ್ಡರೀಕೋದ್ಭವಃ-ಅಸೌ - that Brahmaa; ಕುಣ್ಡೀ-ತೋಯೈಃ-ಅಸಿಚತ್ - with the water from his kamandalu (jug) washed (the foot); ಅಪುನಾತ್-ಯತ್-ಜಲಂ - purified (in the form of Ganga) that water; ವಿಶ್ವಲೋಕಾನ್ - all the worlds; ಹರ್ಷೋತ್ಕರ್ಷಾತ್ - in ecstasy; ಸುಬಹು ನನೃತೇ - very much danced; ಖೇಚರೈಃ- - the Gandharvas and Vidyaadharas; ಉತ್ಸವೇ-ಅಸ್ಮಿನ್ - on this auspicious occasion; ಭೇರೀಂ ನಿಘ್ನನ್ - the drum beating; ಭುವನಮ್-ಅಚರತ್- - the world went about; ಜಾಮ್ಬವಾನ್ ಭಕ್ತಿಶಾಲೀ - Jaambavaan the great devotee;
Translation
As the tip of Thy feet reached its own realm, the Satyalok, Brahmaa washed the foot with the water from his kamandalu-jug. That water, which became Aakaash Ganga, purified all the worlds. The Gandharvaas danced and danced in ecstasy. On this auspicious occasion the great devotee Jaambavaan went around the world beating the drum.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ತಾವದ್ದೈತ್ಯಾಸ್ತ್ವನುಮತಿಮೃತೇ ಭರ್ತುರಾರಬ್ಧಯುದ್ಧಾ

ಕಿಂ ವೋ ಯುದ್ಧೈರಿತಿ ಬಲಿಗಿರಾ ತೇಽಥ ಪಾತಾಲಮಾಪುಃ ॥8॥
Meaning
ತಾವತ್- - then; ದೈತ್ಯಾಃ-ತು- - the Asuras; ಅನುಮತಿಮ್-ಋತೇ ಭ್ರರ್ತುಃ- - without the permission of the master (Bali); ಆರಬ್ಧ-ಯುದ್ಧಾಃ - having started to fight; ದೇವ- - O Lord!; ಉಪೇತೈ-ಭವತ್-ಅನುಚರೈಃ- - Thy emissaries who had approached (come there); ಸಙ್ಗತಾಃ - and opposed; ಭಙ್ಗಮ್-ಆಪನ್ - and got defeated (the Asuras); ಕಾಲಾತ್ಮಾ-ಅಯಂ ವಸತಿ ಪುರತಃ - This is Time incarnate who is standing in front; ಯತ್-ವಶಾತ್ ಪ್ರಾಕ್-ಜಿತಾಃ ಸ್ಮಃ - by whose favour we had won before (formerly); ಕಿಂ ವಃ ಯುದ್ಧೈಃ- - what is the use of our fight?'; ಇತಿ ಬಲಿ-ಗಿರಾ - thus by Bali's words; ತೇ-ಅಥ ಪಾತಾಲಮ್-ಆಪುಃ - they then took to the Paataal;
Translation
O Lord! The Asuras started to fight with the Devas without their master Bali's permission.They were defeated by Thy emissaries who had come there and were fighting on the Deva's side. Bali told them that the Lord in the form of Time was standing before them by whose grace they had won earlier, and was now against them. So it was no use to fight. At this the Asuras went away to Paataala.

ಪಾಶೈರ್ಬದ್ಧಂ ಪತಗಪತಿನಾ ದೈತ್ಯಮುಚ್ಚೈರವಾದೀ-
ಸ್ತಾರ್ತ್ತೀಯೀಕಂ ದಿಶ ಮಮ ಪದಂ ಕಿಂ ನ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರೋಽಸಿ ।
ಪಾದಂ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ ಪ್ರಣಯ ಭಗವನ್ನಿತ್ಯಕಮ್ಪಂ ವದನ್ತಂ
ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದ್ಸ್ತಂ ಸ್ವಯಮುಪಗತೋ ಮಾನಯನ್ನಸ್ತವೀತ್ತ್ವಾಮ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಪಾಶೈಃ-ಬದ್ಧಂ - tied with ropes; ಪತಗಪತಿನಾ - by Garuda; ದೈತ್ಯಮ್-ಉಚ್ಚೈಃ-ಅವಾದೀಃ- - to the Asura (Thou) loudly said; ತಾರ್ತ್ತೀಯೀಕಂ ದಿಶ ಮಮ ಪದಂ - the third (place) show my step (to be put); ಕಿಂ ನ ವಿಶ್ವೇಶ್ವರಃ-ಅಸಿ - are you not the lord of all the worlds; ಪಾದಂ ಮೂರ್ಧ್ನಿ ಪ್ರಣಯ ಭಗವನ್- - the foot (step) on (my) head, place,O Lord!; ಇತಿ-ಅಕಮ್ಪಂ ವದನ್ತಂ - thus (as) he said without any trembling; ಪ್ರಹ್ಲಾದಃ-ತಂ ಸ್ವಯಮ್-ಉಪಗತಃ - Prahlaad himself came near him; ಮಾನಯನ್-ಅಸ್ತವೀತ-ತ್ವಾಮ್ - praised Thee and sang Thy Praises;
Translation
Garuda, Thy attendant had tied Bali with ropes by this time. Thou asked him loudly, 'Show me the place for my third step. Are you not the lord of the three worlds?' Without any hesitation Bali requested Thee to place Thy foot on his head to measure the third step. Prahlaad himself appeared by Bali's side, praised him and sang hymns of praises to Thee.

ದರ್ಪೋಚ್ಛಿತ್ತ್ಯೈ ವಿಹಿತಮಖಿಲಂ ದೈತ್ಯ ಸಿದ್ಧೋಽಸಿ ಪುಣ್ಯೈ-
ರ್ಲೋಕಸ್ತೇಽಸ್ತು ತ್ರಿದಿವವಿಜಯೀ ವಾಸವತ್ವಂ ಚ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ ।
ಮತ್ಸಾಯುಜ್ಯಂ ಭಜ ಚ ಪುನರಿತ್ಯನ್ವಗೃಹ್ಣಾ ಬಲಿಂ ತಂ
ವಿಪ್ರೈಸ್ಸನ್ತಾನಿತಮಖವರಃ ಪಾಹಿ ವಾತಾಲಯೇಶ ॥10॥
Meaning
ದರ್ಪ-ಉಚ್ಛಿತ್ತ್ಯೈ - to remove your pride completely; ವಿಹಿತಮ್-ಅಖಿಲಂ - all this was done; ದೈತ್ಯ ಸಿದ್ಧಃ-ಅಸಿ ಪುಣ್ಯೈಃ- - O Asura! you are blessed by your many good deeds; ಲೋಕಃ-ತೇ-ಅಸ್ತು - may you rule the (sutala) world; ತ್ರಿದಿವ-ವಿಜಯೀ - (which may be) superior even to heaven (Swarga); ವಾಸವ-ತ್ವಂ - (the position of ) indra, you (enjoy); ಚ ಪಶ್ಚಾತ್ - and afterwards (in the next Manvantra); ಮತ್-ಸಾಯುಜ್ಯಂ ಭಜ ಚ ಪುನಃ- - with Me union enjoy also (attain to) then; ಇತಿ-ಅನ್ವಗೃಹ್ಣಾಃ ಬಲಿಂ ತಂ - thus blessing that Bali; ವಿಪ್ರೈಃ-ಸನ್ತಾನಿತ-ಮಖವರಃ - (Thou) who had the priests complete the great Yanjya; ಪಾಹಿ ವಾತಾಲಯೇಶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur! Protect me;
Translation
"O Asura! In order to curb your pride completely, all this was done. You are blessed by your many good deeds. You will rule your region Sutala, which will be superior even to heaven. Later, in the next Manvantra you will become Indra and ultimately you will attain union with me." Blessing Bali thus, Thou had the priests complete the great Vishwajit Yanjya. O Lord of Guruvaayur! protect me.
