ಕದಾಚಿದ್ಗೋಪಾಲಾನ್ ವಿಹಿತಮಖಸಮ್ಭಾರವಿಭವಾನ್
ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತ್ವಂ ಶೌರೇ ಮಘವಮದಮುದ್ಧ್ವಂಸಿತುಮನಾಃ ।
ವಿಜಾನನ್ನಪ್ಯೇತಾನ್ ವಿನಯಮೃದು ನನ್ದಾದಿಪಶುಪಾ-
ನಪೃಚ್ಛಃ ಕೋ ವಾಽಯಂ ಜನಕ ಭವತಾಮುದ್ಯಮ ಇತಿ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಕದಾಚಿತ್- - once; ಗೋಪಾಲಾನ್ - (when) the cowherds; ವಿಹಿತ-ಮಖ- - (had) collected for the Yagya; ಸಮ್ಭಾರ-ವಿಭವಾನ್ - the requisite materials many (of them); ನಿರೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ತ್ವಂ - seeing this, Thou; ಶೌರೇ - O Shauri!; ಮಘವ-ಮದಮ್- - Indra's pride; ಉದ್ಧ್ವಂಸಿತು-ಮನಾಃ - to humble, desiring; ವಿಜಾನನ-ಅಪಿ-ಏತಾನ್ - knowing though these (preparations); ವಿನಯ-ಮೃದು - politely and softly; ನನ್ದ-ಆದಿ-ಪಶುಪಾನ್- - to Nanda and other cowherds; ಅಪೃಚ್ಛಃ - asked; ಕಃ ವಾ-ಅಯಂ - (for) what or this; ಜನಕ ಭವತಾಮ್- - O Father! (is) your; ಉದ್ಯಮ ಇತಿ - effort thus;
Translation
O Shauri! Once the cowherds were collecting the requisite material to perform a Yagya to appease Indra. Thou wanted to humble the pride of Indra. In spite of knowing what the preparations were for, Thou, in full humility and politeness asked Nanda and the other cowherds, 'O Father what is this your effort for?'
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಬಭಾಷೇ ನನ್ದಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಸುತ ನನು ವಿಧೇಯೋ ಮಘವತೋ
ಮಖೋ ವರ್ಷೇ ವರ್ಷೇ ಸುಖಯತಿ ಸ ವರ್ಷೇಣ ಪೃಥಿವೀಮ್ ।
ನೃಣಾಂ ವರ್ಷಾಯತ್ತಂ ನಿಖಿಲಮುಪಜೀವ್ಯಂ ಮಹಿತಲೇ
ವಿಶೇಷಾದಸ್ಮಾಕಂ ತೃಣಸಲಿಲಜೀವಾ ಹಿ ಪಶವಃ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಬಭಾಷೇ ನನ್ದಃ-ತ್ವಾಮ್ - said Nanda to Thee; ಸುತ ನನು - O son! Indeed; ವಿಧೇಯಃ ಮಘವತಃ - has to be performed for Indra; ಮಖಃ ವರ್ಷೇ ವರ್ಷೇ - Yagya every year; ಸುಖಯತಿ ಸ - gives happiness he; ವರ್ಷೇಣ ಪೃಥಿವೀಮ್ - by rain to the earth; ನೃಣಾಂ ವರ್ಷಾಯತ್ತಮ್ - of human beings, on rain depends; ನಿಖಿಲಮ್-ಉಪಜೀವ್ಯಮ್ - all livelihood; ಮಹಿತಲೇ - on the earth; ವಿಶೇಷಾತ್-ಅಸ್ಮಾಕಮ್ - particularly for us; ತೃಣ-ಸಲಿಲ-ಜೀವಾ - (on) grass (and) water live; ಹಿ ಪಶವಃ - indeed the cows;
Translation
Nanda told Thee, 'O son! A yagya has to be performed for Indra every year. He gives happiness to the earth by rain. The livelihood of all human beings on earth depends on rain. Especially so for us, because our cattle live on grass and water alone.'
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಇತಿ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ವಾಚಂ ಪಿತುರಯಿ ಭವಾನಾಹ ಸರಸಂ
ಧಿಗೇತನ್ನೋ ಸತ್ಯಂ ಮಘವಜನಿತಾ ವೃಷ್ಟಿರಿತಿ ಯತ್ ।
ಅದೃಷ್ಟಂ ಜೀವಾನಾಂ ಸೃಜತಿ ಖಲು ವೃಷ್ಟಿಂ ಸಮುಚಿತಾಂ
ಮಹಾರಣ್ಯೇ ವೃಕ್ಷಾಃ ಕಿಮಿವ ಬಲಿಮಿನ್ದ್ರಾಯ ದದತೇ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಇತಿ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ - this hearing; ವಾಚಂ ಪಿತುಃ- - words of father; ಅಯಿ ಭವಾನ್-ಆಹ - O Thou said; ಸರಸಂ - (with) reasoning; ಧಿಕ್-ಏತತ್-ನೋ ಸತ್ಯಂ - oh this is not true; ಮಘವ-ಜನಿತಾ - by Indra (is) generated; ವೃಷ್ಟಿಃ-ಇತಿ ಯತ್ - rain, to say so; ಅದೃಷ್ಟಂ ಜೀವಾನಾಂ - unseen (past actions) of the living beings; ಸೃಜತಿ ಖಲು - generates indeed; ವೃಷ್ಟಿಂ ಸಮುಚಿತಾಂ - the rain required; ಮಹಾ-ಅರಣ್ಯೇ - in the big forest; ವೃಕ್ಷಾಃ ಕಿಮ್-ಇವ - the trees what like; ಬಲಿಮ್-ಇನ್ದ್ರಾಯ - offerings for Indra; ದದತೇ - (do) give?;
Translation
O Lord! Hearing this, Thou said with sweet reasoning, 'Oh no, this is not true, to say that the rain is generated by Indra. Rain is generated by the unseen past actions of the living beings, as required. In this big forest, what kind of offerings do the trees give to Indra?'
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಇದಂ ತಾವತ್ ಸತ್ಯಂ ಯದಿಹ ಪಶವೋ ನಃ ಕುಲಧನಂ
ತದಾಜೀವ್ಯಾಯಾಸೌ ಬಲಿರಚಲಭರ್ತ್ರೇ ಸಮುಚಿತಃ ।
ಸುರೇಭ್ಯೋಽಪ್ಯುತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟಾ ನನು ಧರಣಿದೇವಾಃ ಕ್ಷಿತಿತಲೇ
ತತಸ್ತೇಽಪ್ಯಾರಾಧ್ಯಾ ಇತಿ ಜಗದಿಥ ತ್ವಂ ನಿಜಜನಾನ್ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಇದಂ ತಾವತ್ ಸತ್ಯಂ - this then is true; ಯತ್-ಇಹ ಪಶವಃ - that here the cows; ನಃ ಕುಲ-ಧನಂ - (are our) tribe's wealth; ತತ್-ಆಜೀವ್ಯಾಯ- - so for their livelihood; ಅಸೌ-ಬಲಿಃ - this offering; ಅಚಲ-ಭರ್ತ್ರೇ - to the great mountain; ಸಮುಚಿತಃ - is appropriate; ಸುರೇಭ್ಯಃ-ಅಪಿ- - than the gods also; ಉತ್ಕೃಷ್ಟಾ ನನು - greater are indeed; ಧರಣಿ-ದೇವಾಃ - holy men; ಕ್ಷಿತಿತಲೇ ತತಃ- - on the earth, therefore; ತೇ-ಅಪಿ-ಆರಾಧ್ಯಾ - they also deserve to be worshipped; ಇತಿ ಜಗದಿಥ ತ್ವಮ್ - thus said Thou; ನಿಜ-ಜನಾನ್ - to Thy people;
Translation
Thou said to Thy people,'this is true that the cows are the wealth of our tribe. This mountain (Govardhana) provides them with their requisite grass and water. So the offerings should be made to the mountain. The holy men on the earth are indeed more great than the gods, so they also deserve to be worshipped.'
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಭವದ್ವಾಚಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ ಬಹುಮತಿಯುತಾಸ್ತೇಽಪಿ ಪಶುಪಾಃ
ದ್ವಿಜೇನ್ದ್ರಾನರ್ಚನ್ತೋ ಬಲಿಮದದುರುಚ್ಚೈಃ ಕ್ಷಿತಿಭೃತೇ ।
ವ್ಯಧುಃ ಪ್ರಾದಕ್ಷಿಣ್ಯಂ ಸುಭೃಶಮನಮನ್ನಾದರಯುತಾ-
ಸ್ತ್ವಮಾದಶ್ಶೈಲಾತ್ಮಾ ಬಲಿಮಖಿಲಮಾಭೀರಪುರತಃ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಭವತ್-ವಾಚಂ ಶ್ರುತ್ವಾ - Thy words hearing; ಬಹು-ಮತಿ-ಯುತಾಃ- - with high regards; ತೇ-ಅಪಿ ಪಶುಪಾಃ - they also, the cowherds; ದ್ವಿಜೇನ್ದ್ರಾನ್-ಅರ್ಚನ್ತಃ - holy men worshipping; ಬಲಿಮ್-ಅದದುಃ- - offerings gave; ಉಚ್ಚೈಃ ಕ್ಷಿತಿಭೃತೇ - richly / plentifully to the mountain; ವ್ಯಧುಃ ಪ್ರಾದಕ್ಷಿಣ್ಯಂ - performed circumambulation; ಸುಭೃಶಮ್-ಅನಮನ್- - again and again prostrated; ಆದರಯುತಾಃ- - with great reverence; ತ್ವಮ್-ಆದಃ - Thou ate; ಶೈಲ-ಆತ್ಮಾ - (becoming) the mountain's soul; ಬಲಿಮ್-ಅಖಿಲಮ್- - the offerings entire; ಆಭೀರ-ಪುರತಃ - in the cowherds' front;
Translation
Hearing Thy words the cowherds also worshipped the holy men with high regards. They made rich and plentiful offerings to the mountain. They performed circumambulation and prostrated again and again with great reverence. Thou becoming the soul of the mountain ate all the entire offerings in front of the cowherds.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅವೋಚಶ್ಚೈವಂ ತಾನ್ ಕಿಮಿಹ ವಿತಥಂ ಮೇ ನಿಗದಿತಂ
ಗಿರೀನ್ದ್ರೋ ನನ್ವೇಷ ಸ್ವಬಲಿಮುಪಭುಙ್ಕ್ತೇ ಸ್ವವಪುಷಾ ।
ಅಯಂ ಗೋತ್ರೋ ಗೋತ್ರದ್ವಿಷಿ ಚ ಕುಪಿತೇ ರಕ್ಷಿತುಮಲಂ
ಸಮಸ್ತಾನಿತ್ಯುಕ್ತಾ ಜಹೃಷುರಖಿಲಾ ಗೋಕುಲಜುಷಃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ಅವೋಚಃ-ಚ-ಏವಂ ತಾನ್ - said and thus to them; ಕಿಮ್-ಇಹ ವಿತಥಂ ಮೇ - what there false by me; ನಿಗದಿತಂ - was said; ಗಿರೀನ್ದ್ರಃ ನನು ಏಷ - the mountain indeed this; ಸ್ವ-ಬಲಿಮ್-ಉಪಭುಙ್ಕ್ತೇ - his offerings (given to him) is eating; ಸ್ವ-ವಪುಷಾ - by his own body; ಅಯಂ ಗೋತ್ರಃ - this mountain; ಗೋತ್ರದ್ವಿಷಿ ಚ - (when) the enemy of the mountains (Indra); ಕುಪಿತೇ - gets angry; ರಕ್ಷಿತುಮ್-ಅಲಂ - to protect is enough; ಸಮಸ್ತಾನ್- - everybody; ಇತಿ-ಉಕ್ತಾ - thus being said to; ಜಹೃಷುಃ-ಅಖಿಲಾ - were happy all of them; ಗೋಕುಲ-ಜುಷಃ - Gokula's inhabitants;
Translation
Thou told them 'Was I wrong? This mountain has physically consumed all our offerings. Even if the enemy of mountains, Indra is angry, this mountain is capable of protecting everyone.' All the inhabitants of Gokula were happy on hearing this.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಪರಿಪ್ರೀತಾ ಯಾತಾಃ ಖಲು ಭವದುಪೇತಾ ವ್ರಜಜುಷೋ
ವ್ರಜಂ ಯಾವತ್ತಾವನ್ನಿಜಮಖವಿಭಙ್ಗಂ ನಿಶಮಯನ್ ।
ಭವನ್ತಂ ಜಾನನ್ನಪ್ಯಧಿಕರಜಸಾಽಽಕ್ರಾನ್ತಹೃದಯೋ
ನ ಸೇಹೇ ದೇವೇನ್ದ್ರಸ್ತ್ವದುಪರಚಿತಾತ್ಮೋನ್ನತಿರಪಿ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಪರಿಪ್ರೀತಾ - in jubilation; ಯಾತಾಃ ಖಲು - went indeed; ಭವತ್-ಉಪೇತಾ - you accompanying; ವ್ರಜಜುಷಃ ವ್ರಜಂ - the inhabitants of Vraja to Vraja; ಯಾವತ್-ತಾವತ್- - when then; ನಿಜ-ಮಖ-ವಿಭಙ್ಗಂ - (his) own Yagya stoppage; ನಿಶಮಯನ್ - hearing; ಭವನ್ತಂ ಜಾನನ್-ಅಪಿ- - Thee knowing also; ಅಧಿಕ-ರಜಸಾ- - (because of) preponderance of Rajoguna; ಆಕ್ರಾನ್ತ-ಹೃದಯಃ - with an overcome mind; ನ ಸೇಹೇ ದೇವೇನ್ದ್ರಃ- - did not tolerate Indra; ತ್ವತ್-ಉಪರಚಿತ- - by Thee ordained; ಆತ್ಮ-ಉನ್ನತಿಃ-ಅಪಿ - his own exhaultation also;
Translation
The inhabitants of Vraja, in a jubilant mood returned to Vraja with Thee. Then, when Indra heard of his yagya being stopped he did not tolerate it because his mind was overcome by the preponderance of Rajo Guna. Indra knew Thee well and was also aware that his own high position was ordained by Thee, yet he was enraged.

ಮನುಷ್ಯತ್ವಂ ಯಾತೋ ಮಧುಭಿದಪಿ ದೇವೇಷ್ವವಿನಯಂ
ವಿಧತ್ತೇ ಚೇನ್ನಷ್ಟಸ್ತ್ರಿದಶಸದಸಾಂ ಕೋಽಪಿ ಮಹಿಮಾ ।
ತತಶ್ಚ ಧ್ವಂಸಿಷ್ಯೇ ಪಶುಪಹತಕಸ್ಯ ಶ್ರಿಯಮಿತಿ
ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಸ್ತ್ವಾಂ ಜೇತುಂ ಸ ಕಿಲ ಮಘವಾ ದುರ್ಮದನಿಧಿಃ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಮನುಷ್ಯತ್ವಂ ಯಾತಃ - human form taking; ಮಧುಭಿತ್-ಅಪಿ - the destroyer of the demon Madhu (MahaaVishnu) also; ದೇವೇಷು-ಅವಿನಯಂ - towards the gods disrespect; ವಿಧತ್ತೇ ಚೇತ್- - shows if; ನಷ್ಟಃ-ತ್ರಿದಶಸದಸಾಂ - is lost of all the gods; ಕಃ-ಅಪಿ ಮಹಿಮಾ - what ever prestige; ತತಃ-ಚ ಧ್ವಂಸಿಷ್ಯೇ - and so will destroy; ಪಶುಪ-ಹತಕಸ್ಯ - (this) lowly cowherd's; ಶ್ರಿಯಮ್-ಇತಿ - all prosperity, thus; ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಃ-ತ್ವಾಂ ಜೇತುಂ - setting out, Thou to win; ಸ ಕಿಲ ಮಘವಾ - he indeed Indra; ದುರ್ಮದ-ನಿಧಿಃ - false pride full of;
Translation
Indra was full of false pride and set out to win Thee. He reasoned that even if it was Vishnu himself, the slayer of Madhu, in human form, if he shows disrespect to the gods, what ever their prestige, would be lost. So he made up his mind to destroy the lowly cowherd (Krishna) and all his prosperity, and to win Thee.

ತ್ವದಾವಾಸಂ ಹನ್ತುಂ ಪ್ರಲಯಜಲದಾನಮ್ಬರಭುವಿ
ಪ್ರಹಿಣ್ವನ್ ಬಿಭ್ರಾಣ; ಕುಲಿಶಮಯಮಭ್ರೇಭಗಮನಃ ।
ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥೇಽನ್ಯೈರನ್ತರ್ದಹನಮರುದಾದ್ಯೈವಿಂಹಸಿತೋ
ಭವನ್ಮಾಯಾ ನೈವ ತ್ರಿಭುವನಪತೇ ಮೋಹಯತಿ ಕಮ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ತ್ವತ್-ಆವಾಸಂ ಹನ್ತುಂ - Thy residence (Vraja) to destroy; ಪ್ರಲಯ-ಜಲದಾನ್- - deluge causing clouds; ಅಮ್ಬರ-ಭುವಿ - in the skies' surface; ಪ್ರಹಿಣ್ವನ್ - releasing; ಬಿಭ್ರಾಣಃ ಕುಲಿಶಮ್- - taking thunderbolt; ಅಯಮ್-ಅಭ್ರೇಭ-ಗಮನಃ - this (Indra) Airaavat riding; ಪ್ರತಸ್ಥೇ-ಅನ್ಯೈಃ-ಅನ್ತಃ- - set out with others, inside (in their minds); ದಹನ-ಮರುತ-ಆದ್ಯೈಃ- - (like) fire (Agni), wind (Vaayu) etc.,; ವಿಹಂಸಿತಃ - being scorned; ಭವತ್-ಮಾಯಾ - Thy Maayaa; ನ-ಏವ - does not indeed; ತ್ರಿಭುವನಪತೇ - O Lord of three worlds; ಮೋಹಯತಿ ಕಮ್ - delude whom;
Translation
To destroy Thy residence Vraja, Indra released deluge causing clouds in the skies. He took along thunderbolt and set out riding on his white elephant Airaavata. He was accompanied by other gods, fire(Agni), wind(Vaayu),etc., who slyly scorned him. O Lord of three worlds! whom does not Thy Maayaa afflict?

ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಶ್ಚೇತ್ ದ್ವಿಜಕರುಣಯಾ ಶೈಲಕೃಪಯಾಽ-
ಪ್ಯನಾತಙ್ಕೋಽಸ್ಮಾಕಂ ನಿಯತ ಇತಿ ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ ಪಶುಪಾನ್ ।
ಅಹೋ ಕಿನ್ನಾಯಾತೋ ಗಿರಿಭಿದಿತಿ ಸಞ್ಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ನಿವಸನ್
ಮರುದ್ಗೇಹಾಧೀಶ ಪ್ರಣುದ ಮುರವೈರಿನ್ ಮಮ ಗದಾನ್ ॥10॥

ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರಃ ಕ್ರುದ್ಧಃ-ಚೇತ್ - Indra gets angry, in case; ದ್ವಿಜ-ಕರುಣಯಾ - by the holy men's grace; ಶೈಲ-ಕೃಪಯಾ-ಅಪಿ- - by the mountain's grace also; ಅನಾತಙ್ಕಃ- - fearlessness; ಅಸ್ಮಾಕಮ್ - is ours; ನಿಯತ ಇತಿ - certainly thus; ವಿಶ್ವಾಸ್ಯ ಪಶುಪಾನ್ - convincing the cowherds; ಅಹೋ - O Alas!; ಕಿಮ್-ನ-ಆಯಾತಃ - what, he has not come (yet); ಗಿರಿಭಿದ್-ಇತಿ - Indra thus; ಸಞ್ಚಿನ್ತ್ಯ ನಿವಸನ್ - thinking ,waiting; ಮರುದ್ಗೇಹಾಧೀಶ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ಪ್ರಣುದ ಮುರವೈರಿನ್ - eradicate, O Slayer of Mura; ಮಮ ಗದಾನ್ - my ailments;
Translation
Even if Indra is angry, we are fearless by the grace of the holy men and by the grace of the mountain,' saying so Thou certainly convinced the cowherds. Then Thou stood waiting and wondering why Indra had not yet come. O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Slayer of Mura! do eradicate my ailments.
