ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಥ ವಾರಿಣಿ ಘೋರತರಂ ಫಣಿನಂ
ಪ್ರತಿವಾರಯಿತುಂ ಕೃತಧೀರ್ಭಗವನ್ ।
ದ್ರುತಮಾರಿಥ ತೀರಗನೀಪತರುಂ
ವಿಷಮಾರುತಶೋಷಿತಪರ್ಣಚಯಮ್ ॥1॥
Meaning
ಅಥ ವಾರಿಣಿ - then in the water; ಘೋರತರಂ ಫಣಿನಂ - very fierce that serpent; ಪ್ರತಿವಾರಯಿತುಂ - to drive away; ಕೃತಧೀಃ - having decided; ಭಗವನ್ - O Lord; ದ್ರುತಮ್-ಆರಿಥ - quickly (Thou) approached; ತೀರಗ-ನೀಪ-ತರುಂ - the bank situated Kadamba tree; ವಿಷ-ಮಾರುತ-ಶೋಷಿತ- - the poisoned breeze had dried up; ಪರ್ಣ-ಚಯಮ್ - the cluster of leaves;
Translation
O Lord! Thou then made up Thy mind to drive away the fierce serpent from the waters. Thou quickly approached and got up on a Kadamba tree standing on the bank of the river, with its leaves withered due to the poisonous breeze.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ ಪದಾಮ್ಬುರುಹೇಣ ಚ ತಂ
ನವಪಲ್ಲವತುಲ್ಯಮನೋಜ್ಞರುಚಾ ।
ಹ್ರದವಾರಿಣಿ ದೂರತರಂ ನ್ಯಪತಃ
ಪರಿಘೂರ್ಣಿತಘೋರತರಙ್ಗ್ಗಣೇ ॥2॥
Meaning
ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ - climbing with; ಪದ-ಅಮ್ಬು-ರುಹೇಣ - feet tender lotus like; ಚ ತಂ - and that (tree); ನವ-ಪಲ್ಲವ-ತುಲ್ಯ- - like tender new leaves; ಮನೋಜ್ಞ-ರುಚಾ - charming and splendorous; ಹ್ರದ-ವಾರಿಣಿ - into the deep water; ದೂರತರಂ ನ್ಯಪತಃ - far out (Thou) jumped; ಪರಿಘೂರ್ಣಿತ- - with swirling; ಘೋರ-ತರಙ್ಗ-ಗಣೇ - fierce waves of water;
Translation
Thou climbed that tree with Thy lotus like splendorous charming feet resembling tender leaves, and with a long leap jumped far out into the deep waters with swirling fierce waves.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಭುವನತ್ರಯಭಾರಭೃತೋ ಭವತೋ
ಗುರುಭಾರವಿಕಮ್ಪಿವಿಜೃಮ್ಭಿಜಲಾ ।
ಪರಿಮಜ್ಜಯತಿ ಸ್ಮ ಧನುಶ್ಶತಕಂ
ತಟಿನೀ ಝಟಿತಿ ಸ್ಫುಟಘೋಷವತೀ ॥3॥
Meaning
ಭುವನ-ತ್ರಯ-ಭಾರ-ಭೃತಃ - of the three worlds the weight bearing; ಭವತಃ ಗುರು-ಭಾರ- - of Thee the immense weight (causing); ವಿಕಮ್ಪಿ-ವಿಜೃಮ್ಭಿ-ಜಲಾ - swirling and swelling with its waters; ಪರಿಮಜ್ಜಯತಿ ಸ್ಮ - started to submerge; ಧನುಃ-ಶತಕಂ - the area of a hundred bows (in measurement); ತಟಿನೀ ಝಟಿತಿ - on the river bed, and suddenly; ಸ್ಫುಟ-ಘೋಷವತೀ - (the river) made an intense roar;
Translation
When, Thou the bearer of the weight of the three worlds, jumped, Thy immense weight caused the waters to swirl and swell. On the river bed an area of a hundred bows (yards) submerged, as a sudden roar arose from the river.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಥ ದಿಕ್ಷು ವಿದಿಕ್ಷು ಪರಿಕ್ಷುಭಿತ-
ಭ್ರಮಿತೋದರವಾರಿನಿನಾದಭರೈಃ ।
ಉದಕಾದುದಗಾದುರಗಾಧಿಪತಿ-
ಸ್ತ್ವದುಪಾನ್ತಮಶಾನ್ತರುಷಾಽನ್ಧಮನಾಃ ॥4॥
Meaning
ಅಥ ದಿಕ್ಷು ವಿದಿಕ್ಷು - then, in all the directions and the intermediary directions; ಪರಿಕ್ಷುಭಿತ-ಭ್ರಮಿತ- - turbulent swirling; ಉದರ-ವಾರಿ-ನಿನಾದ-ಭರೈಃ - from the middle of the waters roaring aloud; ಉದಕಾತ್-ಉದಗಾತ್- - from (that) water came out; ಉರಗಾಧಿಪತಿಃ- - the king of serpents; ತ್ವತ್-ಉಪಾನ್ತಮ್- - near Thee; ಅಶಾನ್ತ-ರುಷಾ- - disturbed and angered; ಅನ್ಧಮನಾಃ - and so blinded (with rage);
Translation
The loud roar from the middle of the waters which extended to all the directions and the intermediary directions, disturbed and angered the serpent king Kaaliya. He came out of the water and rushed up to Thee in a fit of blinded anger.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಫಣಶೃಙ್ಗಸಹಸ್ರವಿನಿಸ್ಸೃಮರ-
ಜ್ವಲದಗ್ನಿಕಣೋಗ್ರವಿಷಾಮ್ಬುಧರಮ್ ।
ಪುರತಃ ಫಣಿನಂ ಸಮಲೋಕಯಥಾ
ಬಹುಶೃಙ್ಗಿಣಮಞ್ಜನಶೈಲಮಿವ ॥5॥
Meaning
ಫಣ-ಶೃಙ್ಗ- - (with) hoods , peak (like); ಸಹಸ್ರ-ವಿನಿಃಸೃಮರ- - thousands of them emitting; ಜ್ವಲತ್-ಅಗ್ನಿ-ಕಣ- - burning like fire flakes; ಉಗ್ರ-ವಿಷ-ಅಮ್ಬುಧರಮ್ - fierce poison fluid bearing; ಪುರತಃ ಫಣಿನಂ - in front the serpent; ಸಮಲೋಕಯಥಾಃ - (Thou) saw; ಬಹು-ಶೃಙ್ಗಿ-ಗಣಮ್- - many peaked; ಅಞ್ಜನ-ಶೈಲಮ್-ಇವ - black mountain, as if;
Translation
Thou saw the serpent in front with his thousands of peak like hoods emitting burning fire flakes and fierce poison fluid, looking like a many peaked black mountain.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಜ್ವಲದಕ್ಷಿ ಪರಿಕ್ಷರದುಗ್ರವಿಷ-
ಶ್ವಸನೋಷ್ಮಭರಃ ಸ ಮಹಾಭುಜಗಃ ।
ಪರಿದಶ್ಯ ಭವನ್ತಮನನ್ತಬಲಂ
ಸಮವೇಷ್ಟಯದಸ್ಫುಟಚೇಷ್ಟಮಹೋ ॥6॥
Meaning
ಜ್ವಲತ್-ಅಕ್ಷಿ - with flaming eyes; ಪರಿಕ್ಷರತ್-ಉಗ್ರ-ವಿಷ- - emitting deadly poison; ಶ್ವಸನ್-ಊಷ್ಮಭರಃ - breathing out intense heat; ಸ ಮಹಾಭುಜಗಃ - that huge serpent; ಪರಿದಶ್ಯ - biting; ಭವನ್ತಮ್-ಅನನ್ತಬಲಂ - Thee of limitless strength; ಸಮವೇಷ್ಟಯತ್- - coiled (around Thee); ಅಸ್ಫುಟ-ಚೇಷ್ಟಮ್- - making invisible Thy movements; ಅಹೋ - Alas;
Translation
Alas! That huge serpent emitting deadly poison and breathing out intense heat, bit Thee of limitless strength, all over Thy body. Then it coiled around Thee making Thy body and Thy movements invisible.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅವಿಲೋಕ್ಯ ಭವನ್ತಮಥಾಕುಲಿತೇ
ತಟಗಾಮಿನಿ ಬಾಲಕಧೇನುಗಣೇ ।
ವ್ರಜಗೇಹತಲೇಽಪ್ಯನಿಮಿತ್ತಶತಂ
ಸಮುದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಗತಾ ಯಮುನಾಂ ಪಶುಪಾಃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ಅವಿಲೋಕ್ಯ ಭವನ್ತಮ್- - not seeing Thee; ಅಥ-ಆಕುಲಿತೇ - then distressed; ತಟ-ಗಾಮಿನಿ - (who) to the bank (of river Yamunaa) had come; ಬಾಲಕ-ಧೇನು-ಗಣೇ - the children and the cows all; ವ್ರಜ-ಗೇಹ-ತಲೇ-ಅಪಿ- - in Gokula houses also; ಅನಿಮಿತ್ತ-ಶತಂ - evil omens innumerable; ಸಮುದೀಕ್ಷ್ಯ ಗತಾ - seeing went; ಯಮುನಾಂ ಪಶುಪಾಃ - towards Yamunaa the Gopas;
Translation
The Gopa boys and the cows were distressed when they did not see Thee, and went to the bank of the river Yamunaa. In the houses in Gokula also the Gopas saw hundreds of evil omens and they also rushed towards Yamunaa.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಖಿಲೇಷು ವಿಭೋ ಭವದೀಯ ದಶಾ-
ಮವಲೋಕ್ಯ ಜಿಹಾಸುಷು ಜೀವಭರಮ್ ।
ಫಣಿಬನ್ಧನಮಾಶು ವಿಮುಚ್ಯ ಜವಾ-
ದುದಗಮ್ಯತ ಹಾಸಜುಷಾ ಭವತಾ ॥8॥
Meaning
ಅಖಿಲೇಷು - (as) all of them; ವಿಭೋ - O Lord; ಭವದೀಯ-ದಶಾಮ್ - Thy plight; ಅವಲೋಕ್ಯ - seeing; ಜಿಹಾಸುಷು - ready to give up their; ಜೀವಭರಮ್ - lives; ಫಣಿ-ಬನ್ಧನಮ್- - the coils of the snake; ಆಶು ವಿಮುಚ್ಯ - quickly shedding; ಜವಾತ್-ಉದಗಮ್ಯತ - hastily emerged; ಹಾಸಜುಷಾ ಭವತಾ - with a smile, Thou;
Translation
O Lord! All of them were overwhelmed with grief on seeing Thy plight and were ready to give up their lives in order to save Thee. Just then, Thou quickly shed the coils of the snake and hastily emerged with a smile.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ ತತಃ ಫಣಿರಾಜಫಣಾನ್
ನನೃತೇ ಭವತಾ ಮೃದುಪಾದರುಚಾ ।
ಕಲಶಿಞ್ಜಿತನೂಪುರಮಞ್ಜುಮಿಲ-
ತ್ಕರಕಙ್ಕಣಸಙ್ಕುಲಸಙ್ಕ್ವಣಿತಮ್ ॥9॥
Meaning
ಅಧಿರುಹ್ಯ ತತಃ - climbing upon then; ಫಣಿ-ರಾಜ-ಫಣಾನ್ - the serpent king,s hoods; ನನೃತೇ ಭವತಾ - dance was performed by Thee; ಮೃದು-ಪಾದ-ರುಚಾ - with delicate feet beautiful; ಕಲಶಿಞ್ಜಿತ-ನೂಪುರ- - the gentle sound of the anklets; ಮಞ್ಜು-ಮಿಲತ್- - beautifully mingling with; ಕರ-ಕಙ್ಕಣ-ಸಙ್ಕುಲ- - the bangles on the wrists'; ಸಙ್ಕ್ವಣಿತಮ್ - tinkling;
Translation
Then Thou mounted on the hoods of the serpent king and danced with Thy delicate beautiful feet. The gentle sound of the anklets mingled beautifully and rhythmically with the tinkling of the bangles on Thy wrists.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಜಹೃಷುಃ ಪಶುಪಾಸ್ತುತುಷುರ್ಮುನಯೋ
ವವೃಷುಃ ಕುಸುಮಾನಿ ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರಗಣಾಃ ।
ತ್ವಯಿ ನೃತ್ಯತಿ ಮಾರುತಗೇಹಪತೇ
ಪರಿಪಾಹಿ ಸ ಮಾಂ ತ್ವಮದಾನ್ತಗದಾತ್ ॥10॥
Meaning
ಜಹೃಷುಃ ಪಶುಪಾಃ- - rejoiced the Gopas; ತುತುಷುಃ-ಮುನಯಃ - sang hymns the sages; ವವೃಷುಃ ಕುಸುಮಾನಿ - showered flowers; ಸುರೇನ್ದ್ರ-ಗಣಾಃ - the gods' groups; ತ್ವಯಿ ನೃತ್ಯತಿ - when Thou danced; ಮಾರುತಗೇಹಪತೇ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; ಪರಿಪಾಹಿ - save; ಸ - That (Thou); ಮಾಂ - me; ತ್ವಮ್- - Thou; ಅದಾನ್ತ-ಗದಾತ್ - (from) severe illness;
Translation
As Thou performed the dance, the Gopas rejoiced, the sages sang hymns, and the gods showered flowers. O Lord of the Guruvaayur temple! Such that Thou are, save me from the severe illness.
