ಶ್ರೀಭಗವಾನುವಾಚ
ಊರ್ಧ್ವಮೂಲಮಧಃಶಾಖಮಶ್ವತ್ಥಂ ಪ್ರಾಹುರವ್ಯಯಮ್ ।
ಛನ್ದಾಂಸಿ ಯಸ್ಯ ಪರ್ಣಾನಿ ಯಸ್ತಂ ವೇದ ಸ ವೇದವಿತ್ ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning
ಶ್ರೀ-ಭಗವಾನ್ ಉವಾಚ — Bhagavan Sri Krishna said; ಊರ್ಧ್ವ-ಮೂಲಮ್ — with roots above; ಅಧಃ — downwards; ಶಾಖಮ್ — branches; ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಮ್ — a banyan tree; ಪ್ರಾಹುಃ — is said; ಅವ್ಯಯಮ್ — eternal; ಚನ್ದಾಂಸಿ — the Vedic hymns; ಯಸ್ಯ — of which; ಪರ್ಣಾನಿ — the leaves; ಯಃ — anyone who; ತಮ್ — that; ವೇದ — knows; ಸಃ — he; ವೇದ-ವಿತ್ — the knower of the Vedas.
Translation
Bhagavan Sri Krishna said: It is said that there is an imperishable banyan tree that has its roots upward and its branches down and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಧಶ್ಚೋರ್ಧ್ವಂ ಪ್ರಸೃತಾಸ್ತಸ್ಯ ಶಾಖಾ
ಗುಣಪ್ರವೃದ್ಧಾ ವಿಷಯಪ್ರವಾಲಾಃ ।
ಅಧಶ್ಚ ಮೂಲಾನ್ಯನುಸನ್ತತಾನಿ
ಕರ್ಮಾನುಬನ್ಧೀನಿ ಮನುಷ್ಯಲೋಕೇ ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning
ಅಧಃ — downward; ಚ — and; ಊರ್ಧ್ವಮ್ — upward; ಪ್ರಸೃತಾಃ — extended; ತಸ್ಯ — its; ಶಾಖಾಃ — branches; ಗುಣ — by the modes of material nature; ಪ್ರವೃದ್ಧಾಃ — developed; ವಿಷಯ — sense objects; ಪ್ರವಾಲಾಃ — twigs; ಅಧಃ — downward; ಚ — and; ಮೂಲಾನಿ — roots; ಅನುಸನ್ತತಾನಿ — extended; ಕರ್ಮ — to work; ಅನುಬನ್ಧೀನಿ — bound; ಮನುಷ್ಯ-ಲೋಕೇ — in the world of human society.
Translation
The branches of this tree extend downward and upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature. The twigs are the objects of the senses. This tree also has roots going down, and these are bound to the fruitive actions of human society.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನ ರೂಪಮಸ್ಯೇಹ ತಥೋಪಲಭ್ಯತೇ
ನಾನ್ತೋ ನ ಚಾದಿರ್ನ ಚ ಸಮ್ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾ ।
ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಮೇನಂ ಸುವಿರೂಢಮೂಲ-
ಮಸಙ್ಗಶಸ್ತ್ರೇಣ ದೃಢೇನ ಛಿತ್ತ್ವಾ ॥ 3 ॥
ತತಃ ಪದಂ ತತ್ಪರಿಮಾರ್ಗಿತವ್ಯಂ
ಯಸ್ಮಿನ್ಗತಾ ನ ನಿವರ್ತನ್ತಿ ಭೂಯಃ ।
ತಮೇವ ಚಾದ್ಯಂ ಪುರುಷಂ ಪ್ರಪದ್ಯೇ
ಯತಃ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಃ ಪ್ರಸೃತಾ ಪುರಾಣೀ ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning

Translation
The real form of this tree cannot be perceived in this world. No one can understand where it ends, where it begins, or where its foundation is. But with determination one must cut down this strongly rooted tree with the weapon of detachment. Thereafter, one must seek that place from which, having gone, one never returns, and there surrender to that Supreme Personality of Godhead from whom everything began and from whom everything has extended since time immemorial.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನಿರ್ಮಾನಮೋಹಾ ಜಿತಸಙ್ಗದೋಷಾ
ಅಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮನಿತ್ಯಾ ವಿನಿವೃತ್ತಕಾಮಾಃ ।
ದ್ವನ್ದ್ವೈರ್ವಿಮುಕ್ತಾಃ ಸುಖದುಃಖಸಞ್ಜ್ಞೈ-
ರ್ಗಚ್ಛನ್ತ್ಯಮೂಢಾಃ ಪದಮವ್ಯಯಂ ತತ್ ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning
ನಿಃ — without; ಮಾನ — false prestige; ಮೋಹಾಃ — and illusion; ಜಿತ — having conquered; ಸಙ್ಗ — of association; ದೋಷಾಃ — the faults; ಅಧ್ಯಾತ್ಮ — in spiritual knowledge; ನಿತ್ಯಾಃ — in eternity; ವಿನಿವೃತ್ತ — disassociated; ಕಾಮಾಃ — from lust; ದ್ವನ್ದ್ವೈಃ — from the dualities; ವಿಮುಕ್ತಾಃ — liberated; ಸುಖ-ದುಃಖ — happiness and distress; ಸಞ್ಜ್ಞೈಃ — named; ಗಚ್ಚನ್ತಿ — attain; ಅಮೂಢಾಃ — unbewildered; ಪದಮ್ — situation; ಅವ್ಯಯಮ್ — eternal; ತತ್ — that.
Translation
Those who are free from false prestige, illusion and false association, who understand the eternal, who are done with material lust, who are freed from the dualities of happiness and distress, and who, unbewildered, know how to surrender unto the Supreme Person attain to that eternal kingdom.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ನ ತದ್ಭಆಸಯತೇ ಸೂರ್ಯೋ ನ ಶಶಾಙ್ಕೋ ನ ಪಾವಕಃ ।
ಯದ್ಗತ್ವಾ ನ ನಿವರ್ತನ್ತೇ ತದ್ಧಾಮ ಪರಮಂ ಮಮ ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
ನ — not; ತತ್ — that; ಭಾಸಯತೇ — illuminates; ಸೂರ್ಯಃ — the sun; ನ — nor; ಶಶಾಙ್ಕಃ — the moon; ನ — nor; ಪಾವಕಃ — fire, electricity; ಯತ್ — where; ಗತ್ವಾ — going; ನ — never; ನಿವರ್ತನ್ತೇ — they come back; ತತ್ ಧಾಮ — that abode; ಪರಮಮ್ — supreme; ಮಮ — My.
Translation
That supreme abode of Mine is not illumined by the sun or moon, nor by fire or electricity. Those who reach it never return to this material world.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಮಮೈವಾಂಶೋ ಜೀವಲೋಕೇ ಜೀವಭೂತಃ ಸನಾತನಃ ।
ಮನಃಷಷ್ಠಾನೀನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ ಪ್ರಕೃತಿಸ್ಥಾನಿ ಕರ್ಷತಿ ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
ಮಮ — My; ಏವ — certainly; ಅಂಶಃ — fragmental particle; ಜೀವ-ಲೋಕೇ — in the world of conditional life; ಜೀವ-ಭೂತಃ — the conditioned living entity; ಸನಾತನಃ — eternal; ಮನಃ — with the mind; ಷಷ್ಠಾನಿ — the six; ಇನ್ದ್ರಿಯಾಣಿ — senses; ಪ್ರಕೃತಿ — in material nature; ಸ್ಥಾನಿ — situated; ಕರ್ಷತಿ — is struggling hard.
Translation
The living entities in this conditioned world are My eternal fragmental parts. Due to conditioned life, they are struggling very hard with the six senses, which include the mind.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಶರೀರಂ ಯದವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ ಯಚ್ಚಆಪ್ಯುತ್ಕ್ರಾಮತೀಶ್ವರಃ ।
ಗೃಹೀತ್ವೈತಾನಿ ಸಂಯಾತಿ ವಾಯುರ್ಗನ್ಧಾನಿವಾಶಯಾತ್ ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
ಶರೀರಮ್ — the body; ಯತ್ — as; ಅವಾಪ್ನೋತಿ — gets; ಯತ್ — as; ಚ ಅಪಿ — also; ಉತ್ಕ್ರಾಮತಿ — gives up; ಈಶ್ವರಃ — the lord of the body; ಗೃಹೀತ್ವಾ — taking; ಏತಾನಿ — all these; ಸಂಯಾತಿ — goes away; ವಾಯುಃ — the air; ಗನ್ಧಾನ್ — smells; ಇವ — like; ಆಶಯಾತ್ — from their source.
Translation
The living entity in the material world carries his different conceptions of life from one body to another, as the air carries aromas. Thus he takes one kind of body and again quits it to take another.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಶ್ರೋತ್ರಂ ಚಕ್ಷುಃ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶನಂ ಚ ರಸನಂ ಘ್ರಾಣಮೇವ ಚ ।
ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಾಯ ಮನಶ್ಚಾಯಂ ವಿಷಯಾನುಪಸೇವತೇ ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
ಶ್ರೋತ್ರಮ್ — ears; ಚಕ್ಷುಃ — eyes; ಸ್ಪರ್ಶನಮ್ — touch; ಚ — also; ರಸನಮ್ — tongue; ಘ್ರಾಣಮ್ — smelling power; ಏವ — also; ಚ — and; ಅಧಿಷ್ಠಾಯ — being situated in; ಮನಃ — mind; ಚ — also; ಅಯಮ್ — he; ವಿಷಯಾನ್ — sense objects; ಉಪಸೇವತೇ — enjoys.
Translation
The living entity, thus taking another gross body, obtains a certain type of ear, eye, tongue, nose and sense of touch, which are grouped about the mind. He thus enjoys a particular set of sense objects.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಉತ್ಕ್ರಾಮನ್ತಂ ಸ್ಥಿತಂ ವಾಽಪಿ ಭುಞ್ಜಾನಂ ವಾ ಗುಣಾನ್ವಿತಮ್ ।
ವಿಮೂಢಾ ನಾನುಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ ಜ್ಞಾನಚಕ್ಷುಷಃ ॥ 10 ॥
Meaning
ಉತ್ಕ್ರಾಮನ್ತಮ್ — quitting the body; ಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ — situated in the body; ವಾ ಅಪಿ — either; ಭುಞ್ಜಾನಮ್ — enjoying; ವಾ — or; ಗುಣ-ಅನ್ವಿತಮ್ — under the spell of the modes of material nature; ವಿಮೂಢಾಃ — foolish persons; ನ — never; ಅನುಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ — can see; ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ — can see; ಜ್ಞಾನ-ಚಕ್ಷುಷಃ — those who have the eyes of knowledge.
Translation
The foolish cannot understand how a living entity can quit his body, nor can they understand what sort of body he enjoys under the spell of the modes of nature. But one whose eyes are trained in knowledge can see all this.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಯತನ್ತೋ ಯೋಗಿನಶ್ಚೈನಂ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಾತ್ಮನ್ಯವಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ ।
ಯತನ್ತೋಽಪ್ಯಕೃತಾತ್ಮಾನೋ ನೈನಂ ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತ್ಯಚೇತಸಃ ॥ 11 ॥
Meaning
ಯತನ್ತಃ — endeavoring; ಯೋಗಿನಃ — transcendentalists; ಚ — also; ಏನಮ್ — this; ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ — can see; ಆತ್ಮನಿ — in the self; ಅವಸ್ಥಿತಮ್ — situated; ಯತನ್ತಃ — endeavoring; ಅಪಿ — although; ಅಕೃತ-ಆತ್ಮಾನಃ — those without self-realization; ನ — do not; ಏನಮ್ — this; ಪಶ್ಯನ್ತಿ — see; ಅಚೇತಸಃ — having undeveloped minds.
Translation
The endeavoring transcendentalists who are situated in self-realization can see all this clearly. But those whose minds are not developed and who are not situated in self-realization cannot see what is taking place, though they may try.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಯದಾದಿತ್ಯಗತಂ ತೇಜೋ ಜಗದ್ಭಆಸಯತೇಽಖಿಲಮ್ ।
ಯಚ್ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಸಿ ಯಚ್ಚಆಗ್ನಔ ತತ್ತೇಜೋ ವಿದ್ಧಿ ಮಾಮಕಮ್ ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
ಯತ್ — that which; ಆದಿತ್ಯ-ಗತಮ್ — in the sunshine; ತೇಜಃ — splendor; ಜಗತ್ — the whole world; ಭಾಸಯತೇ — illuminates; ಅಖಿಲಮ್ — entirely; ಯತ್ — that which; ಚನ್ದ್ರಮಸಿ — in the moon; ಯತ್ — that which; ಚ — also; ಅಗ್ನೌ — in fire; ತತ್ — that; ತೇಜಃ — splendor; ವಿದ್ಧಿ — understand; ಮಾಮಕಮ್ — from Me.
Translation
The splendor of the sun, which dissipates the darkness of this whole world, comes from Me. And the splendor of the moon and the splendor of fire are also from Me.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಗಾಮಾವಿಶ್ಯ ಚ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಧಾರಯಾಮ್ಯಹಮೋಜಸಾ ।
ಪುಷ್ಣಾಮಿ ಚೌಷಧೀಃ ಸರ್ವಾಃ ಸೋಮೋ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ರಸಾತ್ಮಕಃ ॥ 13 ॥
Meaning
ಗಾಮ್ — the planets; ಆವಿಶ್ಯ — entering; ಚ — also; ಭೂತಾನಿ — the living entities; ಧಾರಯಾಮಿ — sustain; ಅಹಮ್ — I; ಓಜಸಾ — by My energy; ಪುಷ್ಣಾಮಿ — am nourishing; ಚ — and; ಔಷಧೀಃ — vegetables; ಸರ್ವಾಃ — all; ಸೋಮಃ — the moon; ಭೂತ್ವಾ — becoming; ರಸ-ಆತ್ಮಕಃ — supplying the juice.
Translation
I enter into each planet, and by My energy they stay in orbit. I become the moon and thereby supply the juice of life to all vegetables.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಅಹಂ ವೈಶ್ವಾನರೋ ಭೂತ್ವಾ ಪ್ರಾಣಿನಾಂ ದೇಹಮಾಶ್ರಿತಃ ।
ಪ್ರಾಣಾಪಾನಸಮಾಯುಕ್ತಃ ಪಚಾಮ್ಯನ್ನಂ ಚತುರ್ವಿಧಮ್ ॥ 14 ॥
Meaning
ಅಹಮ್ — I; ವೈಶ್ವಾನರಃ — My plenary portion as the digesting fire; ಭೂತ್ವಾ — becoming; ಪ್ರಾಣಿನಾಮ್ — of all living entities; ದೇಹಮ್ — in the bodies; ಆಶ್ರಿತಃ — situated; ಪ್ರಾಣ — the outgoing air; ಅಪಾನ — the down-going air; ಸಮಾಯುಕ್ತಃ — keeping in balance; ಪಚಾಮಿ — I digest; ಅನ್ನಮ್ — foodstuff; ಚತುಃ-ವಿಧಮ್ — the four kinds.
Translation
I am the fire of digestion in the bodies of all living entities, and I join with the air of life, outgoing and incoming, to digest the four kinds of foodstuff.

ಸರ್ವಸ್ಯ ಚಾಹಂ ಹೃದಿ ಸನ್ನಿವಿಷ್ಟೋ
ಮತ್ತಃ ಸ್ಮೃತಿರ್ಜ್ಞಾನಮಪೋಹನಂ ಚ ।
ವೇದೈಶ್ಚ ಸರ್ವೈರಹಮೇವ ವೇದ್ಯೋ
ವೇದಾನ್ತಕೃದ್ವೇದವಿದೇವ ಚಾಹಮ್ ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning

Translation
I am seated in everyone’s heart, and from Me come remembrance, knowledge and forgetfulness. By all the Vedas, I am to be known. Indeed, I am the compiler of Vedānta, and I am the knower of the Vedas.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ದ್ವಾವಿಮೌ ಪುರುಷೌ ಲೋಕೇ ಕ್ಷರಶ್ಚಾಕ್ಷರ ಏವ ಚ ।
ಕ್ಷರಃ ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಕೂಟಸ್ಥೋಽಕ್ಷರ ಉಚ್ಯತೇ ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
ದ್ವೌ — two; ಇಮೌ — these; ಪುರುಷೌ — living entities; ಲೋಕೇ — in the world; ಕ್ಷರಃ — fallible; ಚ — and; ಅಕ್ಷರಃ — infallible; ಏವ — certainly; ಚ — and; ಕ್ಷರಃ — fallible; ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ — all; ಭೂತಾನಿ — living entities; ಕೂಟ-ಸ್ಥಃ — in oneness; ಅಕ್ಷರಃ — infallible; ಉಚ್ಯತೇ — is said.
Translation
There are two classes of beings, the fallible and the infallible. In the material world every living entity is fallible, and in the spiritual world every living entity is called infallible.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಉತ್ತಮಃ ಪುರುಷಸ್ತ್ವನ್ಯಃ ಪರಮಾತ್ಮೇತ್ಯುದಾಹೃತಃ ।
ಯೋ ಲೋಕತ್ರಯಮಾವಿಶ್ಯ ಬಿಭರ್ತ್ಯವ್ಯಯ ಈಶ್ವರಃ ॥ 17 ॥
Meaning
ಉತ್ತಮಃ — the best; ಪುರುಷಃ — personality; ತು — but; ಅನ್ಯಃ — another; ಪರಮ-ಆತ್ಮಾ — the Supreme Self; ಇತಿ — thus; ಉದಾಹೃತಃ — is said; ಯಃ — who; ಲೋಕ — of the universe; ತ್ರಯಮ್ — the three divisions; ಆವಿಶ್ಯ — entering; ಬಿಭರ್ತಿ — is maintaining; ಅವ್ಯಯಃ — inexhaustible; ಈಶ್ವರಃ — the Lord.
Translation
Besides these two, there is the greatest living personality, the Supreme Soul, the imperishable Lord Himself, who has entered the three worlds and is maintaining them.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ಕ್ಷರಮತೀತೋಽಹಮಕ್ಷರಾದಪಿ ಚೋತ್ತಮಃ ।
ಅತೋಽಸ್ಮಿ ಲೋಕೇ ವೇದೇ ಚ ಪ್ರಥಿತಃ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಃ ॥ 18 ॥
Meaning
ಯಸ್ಮಾತ್ — because; ಕ್ಷರಮ್ — to the fallible; ಅತೀತಃ — transcendental; ಅಹಮ್ — I am; ಅಕ್ಷರಾತ್ — beyond the infallible; ಅಪಿ — also; ಚ — and; ಉತ್ತಮಃ — the best; ಅತಃ — therefore; ಅಸ್ಮಿ — I am; ಲೋಕೇ — in the world; ವೇದೇ — in the Vedic literature; ಚ — and; ಪ್ರಥಿತಃ — celebrated; ಪುರುಷ-ಉತ್ತಮಃ — as the Supreme Personality.
Translation
Because I am transcendental, beyond both the fallible and the infallible, and because I am the greatest, I am celebrated both in the world and in the Vedas as that Supreme Person.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಯೋ ಮಾಮೇವಮಸಮ್ಮೂಢೋ ಜಾನಾತಿ ಪುರುಷೋತ್ತಮಮ್ ।
ಸ ಸರ್ವವಿದ್ಭಜತಿ ಮಾಂ ಸರ್ವಭಾವೇನ ಭಾರತ ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning
ಯಃ — anyone who; ಮಾಮ್ — Me; ಏವಮ್ — thus; ಅಸಮ್ಮೂಢಃ — without a doubt; ಜಾನಾತಿ — knows; ಪುರುಷ-ಉತ್ತಮಮ್ — the Supreme Personality of Godhead; ಸಃ — he; ಸರ್ವ-ವಿತ್ — the knower of everything; ಭಜತಿ — renders devotional service; ಮಾಮ್ — unto Me; ಸರ್ವ-ಭಾವೇನ — in all respects; ಭಾರತ — O son of Bharata.
Translation
Whoever knows Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, without doubting, is the knower of everything. He therefore engages himself in full devotional service to Me, O son of Bharata.
ಶ್ಲೋಕಃ
ಇತಿ ಗುಹ್ಯತಮಂ ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಮಿದಮುಕ್ತಂ ಮಯಾನಘ ।
ಏತದ್ಬುದ್ಧ್ವಾ ಬುದ್ಧಿಮಾನ್ಸ್ಯಾತ್ಕೃತಕೃತ್ಯಶ್ಚ ಭಾರತ ॥ 20 ॥
Meaning
ಇತಿ — thus; ಗುಹ್ಯ-ತಮಮ್ — the most confidential; ಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಮ್ — revealed scripture; ಇದಮ್ — this; ಉಕ್ತಮ್ — disclosed; ಮಯಾ — by Me; ಅನಘ — O sinless one; ಏತತ್ — this; ಬುದ್ಧ್ವಾ — understanding; ಬುದ್ಧಿ-ಮಾನ್ — intelligent; ಸ್ಯಾತ್ — one becomes; ಕೃತ-ಕೃತ್ಯಃ — the most perfect in his endeavors; ಚ — and; ಭಾರತ — O son of Bharata.
Translation
This is the most confidential part of the Vedic scriptures, O sinless one, and it is disclosed now by Me. Whoever understands this will become wise, and his endeavors will know perfection.
