శ్లోకః
అథ వారిణి ఘోరతరం ఫణినం
ప్రతివారయితుం కృతధీర్భగవన్ ।
ద్రుతమారిథ తీరగనీపతరుం
విషమారుతశోషితపర్ణచయమ్ ॥1॥
Meaning
అథ వారిణి - then in the water; ఘోరతరం ఫణినం - very fierce that serpent; ప్రతివారయితుం - to drive away; కృతధీః - having decided; భగవన్ - O Lord; ద్రుతం-ఆరిథ - quickly (Thou) approached; తీరగ-నీప-తరుం - the bank situated Kadamba tree; విష-మారుత-శోషిత- - the poisoned breeze had dried up; పర్ణ-చయం - the cluster of leaves;
Translation
O Lord! Thou then made up Thy mind to drive away the fierce serpent from the waters. Thou quickly approached and got up on a Kadamba tree standing on the bank of the river, with its leaves withered due to the poisonous breeze.
శ్లోకః
అధిరుహ్య పదాంబురుహేణ చ తం
నవపల్లవతుల్యమనోజ్ఞరుచా ।
హ్రదవారిణి దూరతరం న్యపతః
పరిఘూర్ణితఘోరతరంగ్గణే ॥2॥
Meaning
అధిరుహ్య - climbing with; పద-అంబు-రుహేణ - feet tender lotus like; చ తం - and that (tree); నవ-పల్లవ-తుల్య- - like tender new leaves; మనోజ్ఞ-రుచా - charming and splendorous; హ్రద-వారిణి - into the deep water; దూరతరం న్యపతః - far out (Thou) jumped; పరిఘూర్ణిత- - with swirling; ఘోర-తరంగ-గణే - fierce waves of water;
Translation
Thou climbed that tree with Thy lotus like splendorous charming feet resembling tender leaves, and with a long leap jumped far out into the deep waters with swirling fierce waves.
శ్లోకః
భువనత్రయభారభృతో భవతో
గురుభారవికంపివిజృంభిజలా ।
పరిమజ్జయతి స్మ ధనుశ్శతకం
తటినీ ఝటితి స్ఫుటఘోషవతీ ॥3॥
Meaning
భువన-త్రయ-భార-భృతః - of the three worlds the weight bearing; భవతః గురు-భార- - of Thee the immense weight (causing); వికంపి-విజృంభి-జలా - swirling and swelling with its waters; పరిమజ్జయతి స్మ - started to submerge; ధనుః-శతకం - the area of a hundred bows (in measurement); తటినీ ఝటితి - on the river bed, and suddenly; స్ఫుట-ఘోషవతీ - (the river) made an intense roar;
Translation
When, Thou the bearer of the weight of the three worlds, jumped, Thy immense weight caused the waters to swirl and swell. On the river bed an area of a hundred bows (yards) submerged, as a sudden roar arose from the river.
శ్లోకః
అథ దిక్షు విదిక్షు పరిక్షుభిత-
భ్రమితోదరవారినినాదభరైః ।
ఉదకాదుదగాదురగాధిపతి-
స్త్వదుపాంతమశాంతరుషాఽంధమనాః ॥4॥
Meaning
అథ దిక్షు విదిక్షు - then, in all the directions and the intermediary directions; పరిక్షుభిత-భ్రమిత- - turbulent swirling; ఉదర-వారి-నినాద-భరైః - from the middle of the waters roaring aloud; ఉదకాత్-ఉదగాత్- - from (that) water came out; ఉరగాధిపతిః- - the king of serpents; త్వత్-ఉపాంతం- - near Thee; అశాంత-రుషా- - disturbed and angered; అంధమనాః - and so blinded (with rage);
Translation
The loud roar from the middle of the waters which extended to all the directions and the intermediary directions, disturbed and angered the serpent king Kaaliya. He came out of the water and rushed up to Thee in a fit of blinded anger.
శ్లోకః
ఫణశృంగసహస్రవినిస్సృమర-
జ్వలదగ్నికణోగ్రవిషాంబుధరమ్ ।
పురతః ఫణినం సమలోకయథా
బహుశృంగిణమంజనశైలమివ ॥5॥
Meaning
ఫణ-శృంగ- - (with) hoods , peak (like); సహస్ర-వినిఃసృమర- - thousands of them emitting; జ్వలత్-అగ్ని-కణ- - burning like fire flakes; ఉగ్ర-విష-అంబుధరం - fierce poison fluid bearing; పురతః ఫణినం - in front the serpent; సమలోకయథాః - (Thou) saw; బహు-శృంగి-గణం- - many peaked; అంజన-శైలం-ఇవ - black mountain, as if;
Translation
Thou saw the serpent in front with his thousands of peak like hoods emitting burning fire flakes and fierce poison fluid, looking like a many peaked black mountain.
శ్లోకః
జ్వలదక్షి పరిక్షరదుగ్రవిష-
శ్వసనోష్మభరః స మహాభుజగః ।
పరిదశ్య భవంతమనంతబలం
సమవేష్టయదస్ఫుటచేష్టమహో ॥6॥
Meaning
జ్వలత్-అక్షి - with flaming eyes; పరిక్షరత్-ఉగ్ర-విష- - emitting deadly poison; శ్వసన్-ఊష్మభరః - breathing out intense heat; స మహాభుజగః - that huge serpent; పరిదశ్య - biting; భవంతం-అనంతబలం - Thee of limitless strength; సమవేష్టయత్- - coiled (around Thee); అస్ఫుట-చేష్టం- - making invisible Thy movements; అహో - Alas;
Translation
Alas! That huge serpent emitting deadly poison and breathing out intense heat, bit Thee of limitless strength, all over Thy body. Then it coiled around Thee making Thy body and Thy movements invisible.
శ్లోకః
అవిలోక్య భవంతమథాకులితే
తటగామిని బాలకధేనుగణే ।
వ్రజగేహతలేఽప్యనిమిత్తశతం
సముదీక్ష్య గతా యమునాం పశుపాః ॥7॥
Meaning
అవిలోక్య భవంతం- - not seeing Thee; అథ-ఆకులితే - then distressed; తట-గామిని - (who) to the bank (of river Yamunaa) had come; బాలక-ధేను-గణే - the children and the cows all; వ్రజ-గేహ-తలే-అపి- - in Gokula houses also; అనిమిత్త-శతం - evil omens innumerable; సముదీక్ష్య గతా - seeing went; యమునాం పశుపాః - towards Yamunaa the Gopas;
Translation
The Gopa boys and the cows were distressed when they did not see Thee, and went to the bank of the river Yamunaa. In the houses in Gokula also the Gopas saw hundreds of evil omens and they also rushed towards Yamunaa.
శ్లోకః
అఖిలేషు విభో భవదీయ దశా-
మవలోక్య జిహాసుషు జీవభరమ్ ।
ఫణిబంధనమాశు విముచ్య జవా-
దుదగమ్యత హాసజుషా భవతా ॥8॥
Meaning
అఖిలేషు - (as) all of them; విభో - O Lord; భవదీయ-దశాం - Thy plight; అవలోక్య - seeing; జిహాసుషు - ready to give up their; జీవభరం - lives; ఫణి-బంధనం- - the coils of the snake; ఆశు విముచ్య - quickly shedding; జవాత్-ఉదగమ్యత - hastily emerged; హాసజుషా భవతా - with a smile, Thou;
Translation
O Lord! All of them were overwhelmed with grief on seeing Thy plight and were ready to give up their lives in order to save Thee. Just then, Thou quickly shed the coils of the snake and hastily emerged with a smile.
శ్లోకః
అధిరుహ్య తతః ఫణిరాజఫణాన్
ననృతే భవతా మృదుపాదరుచా ।
కలశింజితనూపురమంజుమిల-
త్కరకంకణసంకులసంక్వణితమ్ ॥9॥
Meaning
అధిరుహ్య తతః - climbing upon then; ఫణి-రాజ-ఫణాన్ - the serpent king,s hoods; ననృతే భవతా - dance was performed by Thee; మృదు-పాద-రుచా - with delicate feet beautiful; కలశింజిత-నూపుర- - the gentle sound of the anklets; మంజు-మిలత్- - beautifully mingling with; కర-కంకణ-సంకుల- - the bangles on the wrists'; సంక్వణితం - tinkling;
Translation
Then Thou mounted on the hoods of the serpent king and danced with Thy delicate beautiful feet. The gentle sound of the anklets mingled beautifully and rhythmically with the tinkling of the bangles on Thy wrists.
శ్లోకః
జహృషుః పశుపాస్తుతుషుర్మునయో
వవృషుః కుసుమాని సురేంద్రగణాః ।
త్వయి నృత్యతి మారుతగేహపతే
పరిపాహి స మాం త్వమదాంతగదాత్ ॥10॥
Meaning
జహృషుః పశుపాః- - rejoiced the Gopas; తుతుషుః-మునయః - sang hymns the sages; వవృషుః కుసుమాని - showered flowers; సురేంద్ర-గణాః - the gods' groups; త్వయి నృత్యతి - when Thou danced; మారుతగేహపతే - O Lord of Guruvaayur; పరిపాహి - save; స - That (Thou); మాం - me; త్వం- - Thou; అదాంత-గదాత్ - (from) severe illness;
Translation
As Thou performed the dance, the Gopas rejoiced, the sages sang hymns, and the gods showered flowers. O Lord of the Guruvaayur temple! Such that Thou are, save me from the severe illness.
