ତଦନୁ ନଂଦମମଂଦଶୁଭାସ୍ପଦଂ ନୃପପୁରୀଂ କରଦାନକୃତେ ଗତମ୍।
ସମଵଲୋକ୍ୟ ଜଗାଦ ଭଵତ୍ପିତା ଵିଦିତକଂସସହାୟଜନୋଦ୍ୟମଃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ତଦନୁ ନଂଦମ୍- - after that to Nanda; ଅମଂଦ-ଶୁଭ-ଆସ୍ପଦମ୍ - (who is) of non dimmed virtues the abode; ନୃପ-ପୁରୀମ୍ - to the king's city; କର-ଦାନ-କୃତେ ଗତମ୍ - to pay his tributes (taxes), who had gone; ସମଵଲୋକ୍ୟ - seeing (meeting); ଜଗାଦ ଭଵତ୍-ପିତା - said (to Nanda), Thy father (Vasudeva); ଵିଦିତ-କଂସ- - who knew of Kansa's; ସହାୟଜନ-ଉଦ୍ୟମଃ - and Kansa's supporters' activities;
Translation
Thereafter, Nanda (who is the abode of undiminished virtues), went to the king's city to pay his tributes (taxes). On meeting him, Thy father Vasudeva who knew of the activities of Kansa and his supporters, told him that.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅୟି ସଖେ ତଵ ବାଲକଜନ୍ମ ମାଂ ସୁଖୟତେଽଦ୍ୟ ନିଜାତ୍ମଜଜନ୍ମଵତ୍ ।
ଇତି ଭଵତ୍ପିତୃତାଂ ଵ୍ରଜନାୟକେ ସମଧିରୋପ୍ୟ ଶଶଂସ ତମାଦରାତ୍ ॥2॥
Meaning
ଅୟି ସଖେ - O friend!; ତଵ ବାଲକ ଜନ୍ମ - to you a son's birth; ମାଂ-ସୁଖୟତେ-ଅଦ୍ୟ - gives me pleasure now; ନିଜ-ଆତ୍ମଜ-ଜନ୍ମଵତ୍ - my own son's birth like; ଇତି ଭଵତ୍-ପିତୃତାଂ - thus Thy fatherhood; ଵ୍ରଜନାୟକେ ସମଧିରୋପ୍ୟ - to the cowherd chief, (he cleverly) attributed; ଶଶଂସ ତମ୍-ଆଦରାତ୍ - and praised him with affection;
Translation
"O Friend! The birth of a son to you gives me pleasure as if a son were born to myself." Thus he cleverly attributed Thy fatherhood on Nanda, and praised him with affection.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଇହ ଚ ସଂତ୍ୟନିମିତ୍ତଶତାନି ତେ କଟକସୀମ୍ନି ତତୋ ଲଘୁ ଗମ୍ୟତାମ୍ ।
ଇତି ଚ ତଦ୍ଵଚସା ଵ୍ରଜନାୟକୋ ଭଵଦପାୟଭିୟା ଦ୍ରୁତମାୟୟୌ ॥3॥
Meaning
ଇହ ଚ ସଂତି- - and here there are; ଅନିମିତ୍ତ-ଶତାନି - bad omens in hundreds; ତେ କଟକ-ସୀମ୍ନି - at your residence; ତତଃ ଲଘୁ ଗମ୍ୟତାମ୍ - therefore soon (you) should go; ଇତି ଚ ତତ୍-ଵଚସା - and thus, by his (Vaudeva's) words; ଵ୍ରଜନାୟକଃ - the cowherd chieftain (Nandagopa); ଭଵତ୍-ଅପାୟ-ଭିୟା - to Thee danger apprehending; ଦ୍ରୁତମ୍-ଆୟୟୌ - quickly returned;
Translation
"Here there are bad omens in hundreds and soon at your residence also it will not be safe, so you should return soon". Thus by Vasudeva's words, apprehending danger to Thee, Nanda quickly returned.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅଵସରେ ଖଲୁ ତତ୍ର ଚ କାଚନ ଵ୍ରଜପଦେ ମଧୁରାକୃତିରଂଗନା ।
ତରଲଷଟ୍ପଦଲାଲିତକୁଂତଲା କପଟପୋତକ ତେ ନିକଟଂ ଗତା ॥4॥
Meaning
ଅଵସରେ ଖଲୁ ତତ୍ର ଚ - at that time, indeed, and there; କାଚନ ଵ୍ରଜପଦେ - some (female) in Gokula; ମଧୁର-ଆକୃତିଃ-ଅଂଗନା - beautiful looking woman; ତରଲ-ଷଟ୍ପଦ- - (with) hovering bees; ଲାଲିତ-କୁଂତଲା - around (her) locks of hair (due to the sweet smell); କପଟ-ପୋତକ - (O Thou) in the guise of a child!; ତେ ନିକଟଂ ଗତା - went near Thee;
Translation
Just then there in Gokula, some beautiful looking woman with honey bees hovering around the sweet smelling flowers in her hair locks, entered. O Thou! In the guise of a child, she approached Thee.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସପଦି ସା ହୃତବାଲକଚେତନା ନିଶିଚରାନ୍ଵୟଜା କିଲ ପୂତନା ।
ଵ୍ରଜଵଧୂଷ୍ଵିହ କେୟମିତି କ୍ଷଣଂ ଵିମୃଶତୀଷୁ ଭଵଂତମୁପାଦଦେ ॥5॥
Meaning
ସପଦି ସା - quickly she; ହୃତ-ବାଲକ-ଚେତନା - who had taken the children' lives; ନିଶିଚର-ଅନ୍ଵୟ-ଜା - of demon clan born; କିଲ ପୂତନା - indeed Pootanaa; ଵ୍ରଜ-ଵଧୂଷୁ-ଇହ - among the Vraja women here; କା-ଇୟମ୍-ଇତି - who is this, thus; କ୍ଷଣଂ ଵିମୃଶତୀଷୁ - for a moment wondering; ଭଵଂତମ୍-ଉପାଦଦେ - Thee lifted up (in her arms);
Translation
Quickly she, Pootanaa, born in the clan of demons, who had taken the lives of many children, lifted Thee up, even as the Vraja women were for a second wondering as to who she was.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଲଲିତଭାଵଵିଲାସହୃତାତ୍ମଭିର୍ୟୁଵତିଭିଃ ପ୍ରତିରୋଦ୍ଧୁମପାରିତା ।
ସ୍ତନମସୌ ଭଵନାଂତନିଷେଦୁଷୀ ପ୍ରଦଦୁଷୀ ଭଵତେ କପଟାତ୍ମନେ ॥5॥
Meaning
ଲଲିତ-ଭାଵ-ଵିଲାସ- - by her charming appearance and graceful movements; ହୃତ-ଆତ୍ମଭିଃ-ୟୁଵତିଭିଃ - with captivated minds, the young women; ପ୍ରତିରୋଦ୍ଧୁମ୍-ଅପାରିତା - to deter (stop) not being able; ସ୍ତନମ୍-ଅସୌ - her breasts this (Pootanaa); ଭଵନ-ଅଂତ-ନିଷେଦୁଷୀ - inside the house sitting; ପ୍ରଦଦୁଷୀ ଭଵତେ - gave (her breasts) to Thee; କପଟ-ଆତ୍ମନେ - the illusive child;
Translation
Her charming appearance and graceful movements captivated the minds of the Gopis who were unable to stop her from making advances. So this Pootanaa took her seat inside the house as she applied Thee, the illusive child, to her breasts.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସମଧିରୁହ୍ୟ ତଦଂକମଶଂକିତସ୍ତ୍ଵମଥ ବାଲକଲୋପନରୋଷିତଃ ।
ମହଦିଵାମ୍ରଫଲଂ କୁଚମଂଡଲଂ ପ୍ରତିଚୁଚୂଷିଥ ଦୁର୍ଵିଷଦୂଷିତମ୍ ॥7॥
Meaning
ସମଧିରୁହ୍ୟ ତତ୍-ଅଂକମ୍- - climbing in her lap; ଅଶଂକିତଃ-ତ୍ଵମ୍-ଅଥ - unhesitatingly Thou then; ବାଲକ-ଲୋପନ-ରୋଷିତଃ - by the children' killing angered; ମହତ୍-ଇଵ-ଆମ୍ର-ଫଲମ୍ - huge, as if it were a mango fruit; କୁଚ-ମଂଡଲଂ ପ୍ରତି-ଚୁଚୂଷିଥ - the breast, sucked well; ଦୁର୍ଵିଷ-ଦୂଷିତମ୍ - with strong poison smeared;
Translation
Thou who were angered by her killing of the children, unhesitatingly climbed in her lap and sucked well her poison smeared breasts as if it were a huge mango fruit.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅସୁଭିରେଵ ସମଂ ଧୟତି ତ୍ଵୟି ସ୍ତନମସୌ ସ୍ତନିତୋପମନିସ୍ଵନା ।
ନିରପତଦ୍ଭୟଦାୟି ନିଜଂ ଵପୁଃ ପ୍ରତିଗତା ପ୍ରଵିସାର୍ୟ ଭୁଜାଵୁଭୌ ॥8॥
Meaning
ଅସୁଭିଃ-ଏଵ ସମମ୍ - her life breath along with; ଧୟତି ତ୍ଵୟି ସ୍ତନମ୍- - sucking (when) Thou were the breast; ଅସୌ ସ୍ତନିତ-ଉପମ-ନିସ୍ଵନା - this Pootanaa, with thunder like noise; ନିରପତତ୍- - fell down; ଭୟଦାୟି ନିଜଂ ଵପୁଃ - ferocious her own body; ପ୍ରତିଗତା - reverting to; ପ୍ରଵିସାର୍ୟ ଭୁଜୌ-ଉଭୌ - out stretching both the hands;
Translation
Thou sucked the breast along with her life force. This Pootanaa fell down with a thunder like noise reverting to her natural ferocious body with both hands stretching out.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଭୟଦଘୋଷଣଭୀଷଣଵିଗ୍ରହଶ୍ରଵଣଦର୍ଶନମୋହିତଵଲ୍ଲଵେ ।
ଵ୍ରଜପଦେ ତଦୁରଃସ୍ଥଲଖେଲନଂ ନନୁ ଭଵଂତମଗୃହ୍ଣତ ଗୋପିକାଃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ଭୟଦ-ଘୋଷଣ- - the terrifying sound; ଭୀଷଣ-ଵିଗ୍ରହ- - and the frightful form; ଶ୍ରଵଣ-ଦର୍ଶନ- - hearing and seeing; ମୋହିତ-ଵଲ୍ଲଵେ - (which) stunned the gopas; ଵ୍ରଜପଦେ - and (the whole of) Gokul; ତତ୍-ଉଦରଃ-ସ୍ଥଲ- - on her chest; ଖେଲନଂ ନନୁ - playing indeed; ଭଵଂତମ୍-ଅଗୃହ୍ଣତ - Thee picked up; ଗୋପିକାଃ - the Gopis;
Translation
The whole of Gokul stood stunned hearing the terrifying sound and seeing the frightful form. The Gopis picked Thee up even as Thou were playing on the chest of the dead demoness.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଭୁଵନମଂଗଲନାମଭିରେଵ ତେ ୟୁଵତିଭିର୍ବହୁଧା କୃତରକ୍ଷଣଃ ।
ତ୍ଵମୟି ଵାତନିକେତନନାଥ ମାମଗଦୟନ୍ କୁରୁ ତାଵକସେଵକମ୍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ଭୁଵନ-ମଂଗଲ- - O Thou who confers auspiciousness on the world!; ନାମଭିଃ-ଏଵ ତେ - by Thy name alone; ୟୁଵତିଭିଃ-ବହୁଧା - by the young women, in various ways; କୃତରକ୍ଷଣଃ ତ୍ଵମ୍-ଅୟି - Thou were protected, O Thou!; ଵାତନିକେତନନାଥ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; ମାମ୍-ଅଗଦୟନ୍ - making me devoid of ailments; କୁରୁ ତାଵକ-ସେଵକମ୍ - make me Thy devotee;

O Thou! Who confers auspiciousness on to the world, the young women protected Thee in various ways with chanting Thy names alone. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Making me devoid of my ailments, make me Thy devotee.
