ଵୈଵସ୍ଵତାଖ୍ୟମନୁପୁତ୍ରନଭାଗଜାତ-
ନାଭାଗନାମକନରେଂଦ୍ରସୁତୋଽଂବରୀଷଃ ।
ସପ୍ତାର୍ଣଵାଵୃତମହୀଦୟିତୋଽପି ରେମେ
ତ୍ଵତ୍ସଂଗିଷୁ ତ୍ଵୟି ଚ ମଗ୍ନମନାସ୍ସଦୈଵ ॥1॥
Meaning
ଵୈଵସ୍ଵତ-ଆଖ୍ୟ-ମନୁ- - Vaivasvat named, the Manu; ପୁତ୍ର-ନଭାଗ- - his son Nabhaag; ଜାତ-ନାଭାଗ-ନାମକ- - to him was born Naabhaag named (son); ନରେଂଦ୍ର-ସୁତଃ-ଅଂବରୀଷଃ - (his) son king Ambareesh; ସପ୍ତ-ଅର୍ଣଵ-ଆଵୃତ- - by the seven seas surrounded; ମହୀ-ଦୟିତଃଅପି - the earth even though he ruled; ରେମେ ତ୍ଵତ୍-ସଂଗିଷୁ - (he) delighted in Thy devotees' (company); ତ୍ଵୟି ଚ - and in Thyself; ମଗ୍ନ-ମନାଃ-ସଦୈଵ - whole heartedly, always;
Translation
Nabhaag was the son of Vaivasvata Manu, to whom Naabhaaga was born. To him king Ambareesh was born who ruled the earth surrounded by the seven seas. Yet, Ambareesh always delighted in serving Thy devotees and in worshipping Thee whole heartedly.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତ୍ଵତ୍ପ୍ରୀତୟେ ସକଲମେଵ ଵିତନ୍ଵତୋଽସ୍ୟ
ଭକ୍ତ୍ୟୈଵ ଦେଵ ନଚିରାଦଭୃଥାଃ ପ୍ରସାଦମ୍ ।
ୟେନାସ୍ୟ ୟାଚନମୃତେଽପ୍ୟଭିରକ୍ଷଣାର୍ଥଂ
ଚକ୍ରଂ ଭଵାନ୍ ପ୍ରଵିତତାର ସହସ୍ରଧାରମ୍ ॥2॥
Meaning
ତ୍ଵତ୍-ପ୍ରୀତୟେ - for Thy pleasure; ସକଲମ୍-ଏଵ ଵିତନ୍ଵତଃ- - everything even performing everything; ଅସ୍ୟ ଭକ୍ତ୍ୟା-ଏଵ - by his devotion alone; ଦେଵ - O Lord!; ନଚିରାତ୍-ଅଭୃଥାଃ ପ୍ରସାଦମ୍ - in no time he gained Thy grace; ୟେନ- - by which; ଅସ୍ୟ ୟାଚନମ୍-ଋତେ-ଅପି- - even without his asking; ଅଭିରକ୍ଷଣ-ଅର୍ଥମ୍ - for (his) protection; ଚକ୍ରଂ ଭଵାନ୍ ପ୍ରଵିତତାର - (Thy) discus Thou employed; ସହସ୍ରଧାରମ୍ - which is thousand pointed;
Translation
Performing all his action in total dedication to Thee, O Lord! He soon gained Thy grace. By virtue of which, even without his asking, Thou commissioned Thy thousand pointed discus to protect him.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସ ଦ୍ଵାଦଶୀଵ୍ରତମଥୋ ଭଵଦର୍ଚନାର୍ଥଂ
ଵର୍ଷଂ ଦଧୌ ମଧୁଵନେ ୟମୁନୋପକଂଠେ ।
ପତ୍ନ୍ୟା ସମଂ ସୁମନସା ମହତୀଂ ଵିତନ୍ଵନ୍
ପୂଜାଂ ଦ୍ଵିଜେଷୁ ଵିସୃଜନ୍ ପଶୁଷଷ୍ଟିକୋଟିମ୍ ॥3॥
Meaning
ସ ଦ୍ଵାଦଶୀ-ଵ୍ରତମ୍-ଅଥଃ - he, the rites of Dwaadashi, then,; ଭଵତ୍-ଅର୍ଚନ-ଅର୍ଥମ୍ - to worship Thee; ଵର୍ଷଂ ଦଧୌ ମଧୁଵନେ - for one year, observed in Madhuvana; ୟମୁନା-ଉପକଂଠେ - near the river Yamuna; ପତ୍ନ୍ୟା ସମଂ ସୁମନସା - with his pious wife; ମହତୀଂ ଵିତନ୍ଵନ୍ ପୂଜାଂ - he performed a great poojaa; ଦ୍ଵିଜେଷୁ ଵିସୃଜନ୍ - to the priests giving away; ପଶୁ-ଷଷ୍ଟି-କୋଟିମ୍ - sixty crores of cows;
Translation
In order to worship Thee, along with his pious wife, he observed the Dwaadashi fasting rites for one year on the banks of the Yamuna river, in Maduvana. He conducted a great poojaa, honouring holy men and by giving away to them sixty crores of cows.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତତ୍ରାଥ ପାରଣଦିନେ ଭଵଦର୍ଚନାଂତେ
ଦୁର୍ଵାସସାଽସ୍ୟ ମୁନିନା ଭଵନଂ ପ୍ରପେଦେ ।
ଭୋକ୍ତୁଂ ଵୃତଶ୍ଚସ ନୃପେଣ ପରାର୍ତିଶୀଲୋ
ମଂଦଂ ଜଗାମ ୟମୁନାଂ ନିୟମାନ୍ଵିଧାସ୍ୟନ୍ ॥4॥
Meaning
ତତ୍ର-ଅଥ ପାରଣ-ଦିନେ - there then on the day of taking the food (breaking the fast); ଭଵତ୍-ଅର୍ଚନ-ଅଂତେ - after Thy worship was performed; ଦୁର୍ଵାସସା-ଅସ୍ୟ ମୁନିନା - the sage Durvaasaa, his (of the king Ambareesh); ଭଵନଂ ପ୍ରପେଦେ - palace reached; ଭୋକ୍ତୁଂ ଵୃତଃ-ଚ ସ ନୃପେଣ - and he was invited for food by the king; ପରାର୍ତିଶୀଲଃ - (the sage) who had the habit of being inconsiderate; ମଂଦଂ ଜଗାମ ୟମୁନାଂ - leisurely approached the river Yamuna; ନିୟମାନ୍-ଵିଧାସ୍ୟନ୍ - to perform his obligatory rites;
Translation
Then, there, after Thy worship was performed, on the day of the breaking of the fast and taking food, the sage Durvaasaa arrived at the king's palace, and was invited to take food. The sage who was by nature inconsiderate and a trouble giver, leisurely went to the river Yamunaa to perform his obligatory rites.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ରାଜ୍ଞାଽଥ ପାରଣମୁହୂର୍ତସମାପ୍ତିଖେଦା-
ଦ୍ଵାରୈଵ ପାରଣମକାରି ଭଵତ୍ପରେଣ ।
ପ୍ରାପ୍ତୋ ମୁନିସ୍ତଦଥ ଦିଵ୍ୟଦୃଶା ଵିଜାନନ୍
କ୍ଷିପ୍ୟନ୍ କ୍ରୁଧୋଦ୍ଧୃତଜଟୋ ଵିତତାନ କୃତ୍ୟାମ୍ ॥5॥
Meaning
ରାଜ୍ଞା-ଅଥ - then by the king; ପାରଣ-ମୁହୁର୍ତ-ସମାପ୍ତି-ଖେଦାତ୍ - because of the anxiety of the expiry of the time of taking food; ଵାରା-ଏଵ ପାରଣମ୍-ଅକାରି - by taking water alone, the fast was broken; ଭଵତ୍-ପରେଣ - (by the king who) was devoted to Thee; ପ୍ରାପ୍ତଃ ମୁନିଃ-ତତ୍-ଅଥ - then that sage arriving; ଦିଵ୍ୟ-ଦୃଶା ଵିଜାନନ୍ - by his divine insight knowing; କ୍ଷିପ୍ୟନ୍ - rebuking (the king); କ୍ରୁଧା-ଉଦ୍ଧୃତ-ଜଟଃ - out of anger plucked his matted hair; ଵିତତାନ କୃତ୍ୟାମ୍ - and created Krityaa (an evil spirit);
Translation
The king was anxious as the time was expiring for taking food. So, the king Ambareesha who was devoted to Thee broke the fast by taking a sip of water. When the sage arrived and came to know by his divine insight of what had happened, he rebuked the king and angrily plucked his matted hair and created Krityaa an evil spirit.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
କୃତ୍ୟାଂ ଚ ତାମସିଧରାଂ ଭୁଵନଂ ଦହଂତୀ-
ମଗ୍ରେଽଭିଵୀକ୍ଷ୍ୟନୃପତିର୍ନ ପଦାଚ୍ଚକଂପେ ।
ତ୍ଵଦ୍ଭକ୍ତବାଧମଭିଵୀକ୍ଷ୍ୟ ସୁଦର୍ଶନଂ ତେ
କୃତ୍ୟାନଲଂ ଶଲଭୟନ୍ ମୁନିମନ୍ଵଧାଵୀତ୍ ॥6॥
Meaning
କୃତ୍ୟାଂ ଚ ତାମ୍-ଅସି-ଧରାଂ - and that Krityaa holding a sword; ଭୁଵନଂ ଦହଂତୀମ୍- - scorching the world; ଅଗ୍ରେ-ଅଭିଵୀକ୍ଷ୍ୟ- - seeing in front; ନୃପତିଃ-ନ ପଦାତ୍-ଚକଂପେ - the king did not move from his place; ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଭକ୍ତ-ବାଧମ୍- - attacking of Thy devotee; ଅଭିଵୀକ୍ଷ୍ୟ ସୁଦର୍ଶନଂ ତେ - seeing, Thy Sudarshana (Discus); କୃତ୍ୟା-ଅନଲଂ ଶଲଭୟନ୍ - the fire of Krityaa doused like a moth; ମୁନିମ୍-ଅନ୍ଵଧାଵୀତ୍ - and chased the sage;
Translation
The king seeing in front the spirit holding a sword and scorching the world, did not budge a bit from his place. Noticing Thy devotee in danger, Thy Discus Sudarshana consumed Krityaa's fire like a moth and then chased the sage who was running away.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଧାଵନ୍ନଶେଷଭୁଵନେଷୁ ଭିୟା ସ ପଶ୍ୟନ୍
ଵିଶ୍ଵତ୍ର ଚକ୍ରମପି ତେ ଗତଵାନ୍ ଵିରିଂଚମ୍ ।
କଃ କାଲଚକ୍ରମତିଲଂଘୟତୀତ୍ୟପାସ୍ତଃ
ଶର୍ଵଂ ୟୟୌ ସ ଚ ଭଵଂତମଵଂଦତୈଵ ॥7॥
Meaning
ଧାଵନ୍-ଅଶେଷ-ଭୁଵନେଷୁ - running in all the worlds; ଭିୟା ସ ପଶ୍ୟନ୍ ଵିଶ୍ଵତ୍ର - fearfully he seeing everywhere; ଚକ୍ରମ୍-ଅପି ତେ - Thy discus alone; ଗତଵାନ୍ ଵିରିଂଚମ୍ - went to Brahmaa; କଃ-କାଲ-ଚକ୍ରମ୍-ଅତିଲଂଘୟତି- - who can overcome the wheel of time'; ଇତି-ଅପାସ୍ତଃ - thus (saying) was dismissed; ଶର୍ଵଂ ୟୟୌ ସ ଚ - he (Durvaasaa) also went to Shiva; ଭଵଂତଂ ଅଵଂଦତ ଏଵ - he (who) made obeisance to Thee alone;
Translation
Running around the limitless worlds fearfully, Durvaasaa saw Thy discus alone everywhere. He went to Brahmaa for respite, who dismissed him saying that who could overcome the wheel of time. He then went to Shiva, he who also made obeisance to Thee alone.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଭୂୟୋ ଭଵନ୍ନିଲୟମେତ୍ୟ ମୁନିଂ ନମଂତଂ
ପ୍ରୋଚେ ଭଵାନହମୃଷେ ନନୁ ଭକ୍ତଦାସଃ ।
ଜ୍ଞାନଂ ତପଶ୍ଚ ଵିନୟାନ୍ଵିତମେଵ ମାନ୍ୟଂ
ୟାହ୍ୟଂବରୀଷପଦମେଵ ଭଜେତି ଭୂମନ୍ ॥8॥
Meaning
ଭୂୟଃ ଭଵତ୍-ନିଲୟମ୍-ଏତ୍ୟ - then reaching Thy abode; ମୁନିଂ ନମଂତଂ ପ୍ରୋଚେ - to the sage who was prostrating, said; ଭଵାନ-ଅହମ୍-ଋଷେ - Thou 'I am, O Rishi,; ନନୁ ଭକ୍ତ-ଦାସଃ - only a servant of my devotees; ଜ୍ଞାନଂ ତପଃ-ଚ - knowledge and austerity; ଵିନୟ-ଆନ୍ଵିତମ୍-ଏଵ ମାନ୍ୟମ୍ - combined with modesty only is respected; ୟାହି - go; ଅଂବରୀଷ-ପଦମ୍-ଏଵ ଭଜ- - seek shelter at the feet of Ambareesh himself'; ଇତି ଭୂମନ୍ - thus, O Infinite Lord! (Thou said to him);
Translation
Then, when the sage Durvaasaa reached Thy abode and was prostrating before Thee, O Infinite Lord! Thou told him,'O Rishi, I am only a servant of my devotees. Knowledge and austerity combined with modesty and humility only is respected. Go and seek shelter at the feet of Ambareesh himself.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତାଵତ୍ସମେତ୍ୟ ମୁନିନା ସ ଗୃହୀତପାଦୋ
ରାଜାଽପସୃତ୍ୟ ଭଵଦସ୍ତ୍ରମସାଵନୌଷୀତ୍ ।
ଚକ୍ରେ ଗତେ ମୁନିରଦାଦଖିଲାଶିଷୋଽସ୍ମୈ
ତ୍ଵଦ୍ଭକ୍ତିମାଗସି କୃତେଽପି କୃପାଂ ଚ ଶଂସନ୍ ॥9॥
Meaning
ତାଵତ୍-ସମେତ୍ୟ - then coming back; ମୁନିନା ସ ଗୃହୀତ-ପାଦଃ - by the sage, whose feet were clasped; ରାଜା-ଅପସୃତ୍ୟ - the king (Ambareesh) moved away; ଭଵତ୍-ଅସ୍ତ୍ରମ୍-ଅସୌ-ଅନୌଷୀତ୍ - he then praised Thy weapon Sudarshan; ଚକ୍ରେ ଗତେ - when the discus went away; ମୁନିଃ-ଅଦାତ୍- - the sage gave; ଅଖିଲ-ଆଶିଷଃ-ଅସ୍ମୈ - all the blessings to him; ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଭକ୍ତିମ୍- - and devotion to Thee; ଅଗାସି କୃତେ-ଅପି - even though wronged; କୃପାଂ ଚ ଶଂସନ୍ - also praised (the king's) kindness,;
Translation
Coming back to Ambareesh, the sage clasped his feet for pardon. The king moved back and withdrew his feet out of humility and praised Thy weapon the discus Sudarshana.On the discus retiring, the sage was all praises for Ambareesh for his devotion and the kindness shown in spite of being wronged. He gave the king all the blessings.

ଭୁକ୍ତ୍ଵା ସ୍ଵୟଂ ତ୍ଵୟି ତତୋଽପି ଦୃଢଂ ରତୋଽଭୂ-
ତ୍ସାୟୁଜ୍ୟମାପ ଚ ସ ମାଂ ପଵନେଶ ପାୟାଃ ॥10॥
Meaning
ରାଜା ପ୍ରତୀକ୍ଷ୍ୟ ମୁନିମ୍- - the king awaiting the sage; ଏକସମାମ୍-ଅନାଶ୍ଵାନ୍ - for one year did not take food; ସଂଭୋଜ୍ୟ ସାଧୁ - feeding well; ତମ୍-ଋଷିମ୍ - that sage; ଵିସୃଜନ୍ ପ୍ରସନ୍ନମ୍ - and sending him off pleased; ଭୁକ୍ତ୍ଵା ସ୍ଵୟଂ - taking food himself; ତ୍ଵୟି ତତଃ-ଅପି - to Thee even more; ଦୃଢଂ ରତଃ-ଅଭୂତ୍- - firmly devoted became; ସାୟୁଜ୍ୟମ୍-ଆପ ଚ ସ - and he attained union with Thee; ମାଂ ପଵନେଶ ପାୟାଃ - me, O Lord of Guruvaayur! Protect;
Translation
The king waited for the sage to return and did not take food for one year.Then he fed him well and sent him off happy, after which only he took food himself.The king became more firmly devoted to Thee than before and ultimately attained union with Thee. O Lord of Guruvaayur! May Thou protect me.
