ରୁଚିରକଂପିତକୁଂଡଲମଂଡଲଃ ସୁଚିରମୀଶ ନନର୍ତିଥ ପନ୍ନଗେ ।
ଅମରତାଡିତଦୁଂଦୁଭିସୁଂଦରଂ ଵିୟତି ଗାୟତି ଦୈଵତୟୌଵତେ ॥1॥
Meaning
ରୁଚିର-କଂପିତ- - beautifully quivering; କୁଂଡଲ-ମଂଡଲଃ - the ear ornaments; ସୁଚିରମ୍-ଈଶ - for long O Lord!; ନନର୍ତିଥ ପନ୍ନଗେ - (Thou) danced on the serpent's (hoods); ଅମର-ତାଡିତ- - the gods beat; ଦୁଂଦୁଭିଃ-ସୁଂଦରମ୍ - the drums sweetly; ଵିୟତି ଗାୟତି - in the skies sang; ଦୈଵତ-ୟୌଵତେ - the celestial damsels;
Translation
O Lord! With Thy ear ornaments quivering rhythmically, Thou danced for long on the hoods of the serpent. As the gods in the sky beat the drums, the heavenly damsels sang in accompaniment.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ନମତି ୟଦ୍ୟଦମୁଷ୍ୟ ଶିରୋ ହରେ ପରିଵିହାୟ ତଦୁନ୍ନତମୁନ୍ନତମ୍ ।
ପରିମଥନ୍ ପଦପଂକରୁହା ଚିରଂ ଵ୍ୟହରଥାଃ କରତାଲମନୋହରମ୍ ॥2॥
Meaning
ନମତି ୟତ୍-ୟତ୍- - drops down that which; ଅମୁଷ୍ୟ ଶିରଃ - his (Kaaliya's) head (hoods); ହରେ - O Hari!; ପରିଵିହାୟ ତତ୍- - leaving that; ଉନ୍ନତମ୍-ଉନ୍ନତମ୍ - the raised raised one; ପରିମଥନ୍ ପଦ୍-ପଂକରୁହା - trampling by Thy feet lotus like; ଚିରଂ ଵ୍ୟହରଥାଃ - for long (Thou) played around; କରତାଲ-ମନୋହରମ୍ - clapping beautifully;
Translation
O Hari! Thou played around for long, leaving the drooped down head and jumping on the raised ones. Thus Thou trampled hood after hood with Thy lotus feet. Thou danced around in this manner keeping time with the clapping of hands beautifully.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତ୍ଵଦଵଭଗ୍ନଵିଭୁଗ୍ନଫଣାଗଣେ ଗଲିତଶୋଣିତଶୋଣିତପାଥସି ।
ଫଣିପତାଵଵସୀଦତି ସନ୍ନତାସ୍ତଦବଲାସ୍ତଵ ମାଧଵ ପାଦୟୋଃ ॥3॥
Meaning
ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଅଵଭଗ୍ନ- - (when) by Thee crushed; ଵିଭୁଗ୍ନ-ଫଣାଗଣେ - and so drooping were the many hoods; ଗଲିତ-ଶୋଣିତ- - (when) the flowing blood; ଶୋଣିତ-ପାଥସି - made red the waters; ଫଣିପତୌ-ଅଵସୀଦତି - the serpent king got exhausted,; ସନ୍ନତାଃ-ତତ୍-ଅବଲାଃ- - prostrated his wives; ତଵ ମାଧଵ ପାଦୟୋଃ - (at) Thy, O Maadhava, two feet;
Translation
The group of hoods were crushed by Thee and were drooping. The blood flowing from them rendered the waters of Yamunaa red. The serpent king was totally exhausted. Thereupon, O Maadhava! His wives prostrated at Thy two feet in all humility.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅୟି ପୁରୈଵ ଚିରାୟ ପରିଶ୍ରୁତତ୍ଵଦନୁଭାଵଵିଲୀନହୃଦୋ ହି ତାଃ ।
ମୁନିଭିରପ୍ୟନଵାପ୍ୟପଥୈଃ ସ୍ତଵୈର୍ନୁନୁଵୁରୀଶ ଭଵଂତମୟଂତ୍ରିତମ୍ ॥4॥
Meaning
ଅୟି ପୁରା-ଏଵ - O Lord! Even long ago; ଚିରାୟ ପରିଶ୍ରୁତ- - for a long time, having well heard of; ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଅନୁଭାଵ- - Thy greatness; ଵିଲୀନ-ହୃଦଃ ହି - with their immersed hearts, indeed,; ତାଃ ମୁନିଭିଃ-ଅପି- - they, by the sages even; ଅନଵାପ୍ୟ-ପଥୈଃ - unattained ways; ସ୍ତଵୈଃ-ନୁନୁଵୁଃ- - with (such) hymns praised; ଈଶ - O Lord; ଭଵଂତମ୍-ଅୟଂତ୍ରିତମ୍ - Thee, unrestricted;
Translation
O Lord! Long ago, and for a long time the serpent wives had well heard of Thy majestic greatness. And so their minds were absorbed in Thee. Without any restrain, they hailed Thee with hymns of praises of a kind which are beyond the powers of even great sages.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଫଣିଵଧୂଗଣଭକ୍ତିଵିଲୋକନପ୍ରଵିକସତ୍କରୁଣାକୁଲଚେତସା ।
ଫଣିପତିର୍ଭଵତାଽଚ୍ୟୁତ ଜୀଵିତସ୍ତ୍ଵୟି ସମର୍ପିତମୂର୍ତିରଵାନମତ୍ ॥5॥
Meaning
ଫଣି-ଵଧୂ-ଗଣ- - the serpent wives'; ଭକ୍ତି-ଵିଲୋକନ- - devotion seeing; ପ୍ରଵିକସତ୍-କରୁଣା- - with overflowing compassion; ଆକୁଲ-ଚେତସା - filling Thy mind; ଫଣିପତିଃ-ଭଵତା- - the serpent king by Thee; ଅଚ୍ୟୁତ - O Achyuta!; ଜୀଵିତଃ-ତ୍ଵୟି - let to live, unto Thee; ସମର୍ପିତ-ମୂର୍ତିଃ- - surrendering himself; ଅଵାନମତ୍ - prostrated;
Translation
O Achyuta! Thy heart was overflowing with compassion on seeing the devotion of the serpent wives. With Thy mind welled with such compassion Thou let the serpent king live, who then surrendering himself unto Thee, prostrated before Thee.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ରମଣକଂ ଵ୍ରଜ ଵାରିଧିମଧ୍ୟଗଂ ଫଣିରିପୁର୍ନ କରୋତି ଵିରୋଧିତାମ୍ ।
ଇତି ଭଵଦ୍ଵଚନାନ୍ୟତିମାନୟନ୍ ଫଣିପତିର୍ନିରଗାଦୁରଗୈଃ ସମମ୍ ॥6॥
Meaning
ରମଣକଂ ଵ୍ରଜ - to Ramanaka (island) go; ଵାରିଧି-ମଧ୍ୟଗଂ - (situated) in the ocean's centre; ଫଣି-ରିପୁଃ-ନ କରୋତି - the enemy of the snakes (Garuda) will not do; ଵିରୋଧିତାଂ ଇତି - enmity', thus; ଭଵତ୍-ଵଚନାନି- - Thy words; ଅତିମାନୟନ୍- - respectfully obeying; ଫଣପତିଃ-ନିରଗାତ୍- - the serpent king departed; ଉରଗୈଃ ସମମ୍ - the other serpents along with;
Translation
Thou then told him to go to the Ramanaka island situated in the centre of the ocean. There the enemy of the snakes, Garuda would not do him any harm. Respectfully obeying these words of Thine, the serpent king departed along with the other snakes.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଫଣିଵଧୂଜନଦତ୍ତମଣିଵ୍ରଜଜ୍ଵଲିତହାରଦୁକୂଲଵିଭୂଷିତଃ ।
ତଟଗତୈଃ ପ୍ରମଦାଶ୍ରୁଵିମିଶ୍ରିତୈଃ ସମଗଥାଃ ସ୍ଵଜନୈର୍ଦିଵସାଵଧୌ ॥7॥
Meaning
ଫଣିଵଧୂଜନ- - the serpent wives; ଦତ୍ତ-ମଣିଵ୍ରଜ- - gave (Thee) many gems; ଜ୍ଵଲିତ-ହାର- - making resplendent the necklaces; ଦୁକୂଲ-ଵିଭୂଷିତଃ - and by silk garments adorned; ତଟ-ଗତୈଃ - on the banks who were (waiting); ପ୍ରମଦାଶ୍ରୁ-ଵିମିଶ୍ରିତୈଃ - with joyful tears mingling (sight); ସମଗଥାଃ ସ୍ଵଜନୈଃ- - Thou went with Thy folk; ଦିଵସ-ଅଵଧୌ - at the day's end (evening);
Translation
The serpent wives gifted Thee many gems, resplendent necklaces and silk garments. Adorned with these, towards evening, Thou joined Thy folk, who were waiting for Thee on the banks with their sights mingled with joyful tears, and went with them.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ନିଶି ପୁନସ୍ତମସା ଵ୍ରଜମଂଦିରଂ ଵ୍ରଜିତୁମକ୍ଷମ ଏଵ ଜନୋତ୍କରେ ।
ସ୍ଵପତି ତତ୍ର ଭଵଚ୍ଚରଣାଶ୍ରୟେ ଦଵକୃଶାନୁରରୁଂଧ ସମଂତତଃ ॥8॥
Meaning
ନିଶି ପୁନଃ-ତମସା - (when) in the night, again because of darkness; ଵ୍ରଜ-ମଂଦିରଂ - to the Vraja houses; ଵ୍ରଜିତୁମ୍-ଅକ୍ଷମ - to go were unable; ଏଵ ଜନୋତ୍କରେ - certainly, the group of people; ସ୍ଵପତି ତତ୍ର - (they) were sleeping there; ଭଵତ୍-ଚରଣ-ଆଶ୍ରୟେ - in Thy feets' shelter; ଦଵକୃଶାନୁଃ- - a forest fire; ଅରୁଂଧ ସମଂତତଃ - surrounded all around;
Translation
In the darkness of the night the group of people were unable to go back to their houses in Vraja. So they were sleeping there on the banks in the shelter of Thy feet. Just then they were engulfed by a forest fire.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ପ୍ରବୁଧିତାନଥ ପାଲୟ ପାଲୟେତ୍ୟୁଦୟଦାର୍ତରଵାନ୍ ପଶୁପାଲକାନ୍ ।
ଅଵିତୁମାଶୁ ପପାଥ ମହାନଲଂ କିମିହ ଚିତ୍ରମୟଂ ଖଲୁ ତେ ମୁଖମ୍ ॥9॥
Meaning
ପ୍ରବୁଧିତାନ୍-ଅଥ - who were awakened then; ପାଲୟ ପାଲୟ-ଇତି- - save, save us thus; ଉଦୟତ୍-ଆର୍ତ-ରଵାନ୍ - raising piteous tones; ପଶୁପାଲକାନ୍ - the cowherds; ଅଵିତୁମ୍-ଆଶୁ - to protect, quickly; ପପାଥ ମହାନଲମ୍ - (Thou) drank the great fire; କିମ୍-ଇହ ଚିତ୍ରମ୍- - what here is surprising; ଅୟଂ ଖଲୁ - this (fire) is indeed; ତେ ମୁଖମ୍ - Thy mouth;
Translation
The Gopas were awakened and raised piteous tones of 'save us, save us', in alarm. To quickly protect them, Thou drank in that great fire. What is so surprising in this? Thy mouth, indeed, is fire itself.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଶିଖିନି ଵର୍ଣତ ଏଵ ହି ପୀତତା ପରିଲସତ୍ୟଧୁନା କ୍ରିୟୟାଽପ୍ୟସୌ ।
ଇତି ନୁତଃ ପଶୁପୈର୍ମୁଦିତୈର୍ଵିଭୋ ହର ହରେ ଦୁରିତୈଃସହ ମେ ଗଦାନ୍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ଶିଖିନି ଵର୍ଣତଃ ଏଵ - in the fire by colour only; ହି ପୀତତା - indeed is yellowness (Peetataa); ପରିଲସତି-ଅଧୁନା - it exists now; କ୍ରିୟୟା-ଅପି-ଅସୌ - as an action (Peetataa) also in this (fire); ଇତି ନୁତଃ - thus praised; ପଶୁପୈଃ-ମୁଦିତୈଃ- - by the cowherds (who were) delighted; ଵିଭୋ - O All pervading Lord!; ହର ହରେ - eradicate, O Hari!; ଦୁରିତୈଃ ସହ - along with the sins; ମେ ଗଦାନ୍ - my ailments;
Translation
The yellowness 'Peetataa' was only an adjective of fire. By Thy having drunk it, it has also acquired the verb adjective of Peetataa, to be drunk. O All pervading Lord! The delighted cowherds thus praised Thee. O Hari! Deign to eradicate my ailments along with my sins.
