ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଉତ୍ତାନପାଦନୃପତେର୍ମନୁନଂଦନସ୍ୟ
ଜାୟା ବଭୂଵ ସୁରୁଚିର୍ନିତରାମଭୀଷ୍ଟା ।
ଅନ୍ୟା ସୁନୀତିରିତି ଭର୍ତୁରନାଦୃତା ସା
ତ୍ଵାମେଵ ନିତ୍ୟମଗତିଃ ଶରଣଂ ଗତାଽଭୂତ୍ ॥1॥

Meaning
ଉତ୍ତାନପାଦ-ନୃପତେଃ- - king Uttaanpaad's; ମନୁ-ନଂଦନସ୍ୟ - who was the son of Manu; ଜାୟା ବଭୂଵ ସୁରୁଚିଃ- - wife became Suruchi; ନିତରାମ୍-ଅଭୀଷ୍ଟା - extremely dear; ଅନ୍ୟା ସୁନୀତିଃ-ଇତି - the other (wife) named Suneeti; ଭର୍ତୁଃ-ଅନାଦୃତା ସା - she was neglected by her husband; ତ୍ଵାମ୍-ଏଵ ନିତ୍ୟମ୍- - in Thee alone, who are eternal; ଅଗତିଃ-ଶରଣଂ - refuge of the helpless (she); ଗତା-ଅଭୂତ୍ - (in Thee) took refuge;

Translation
To the king Uttaanpaada, the son of Manu, his wife Suruchi was extremely dear. The other wife Suneeti being ignored by her husband, was helpless and took shelter in Thee alone who are eternal refuge of the helpless.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅଂକେ ପିତୁଃ ସୁରୁଚିପୁତ୍ରକମୁତ୍ତମଂ ତଂ
ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା ଧ୍ରୁଵଃ କିଲ ସୁନୀତିସୁତୋଽଧିରୋକ୍ଷ୍ୟନ୍ ।
ଆଚିକ୍ଷିପେ କିଲ ଶିଶୁଃ ସୁତରାଂ ସୁରୁଚ୍ୟା
ଦୁସ୍ସଂତ୍ୟଜା ଖଲୁ ଭଵଦ୍ଵିମୁଖୈରସୂୟା ॥2॥

Meaning
ଅଂକେ ପିତୁଃ - on (his) father's lap; ସୁରୁଚି-ପୁତ୍ରକମ୍-ଉତ୍ତମଂ ତଂ - Suruchi's son, that Uttama,; ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା ଧ୍ରୁଵଃ କିଲ - seeing Dhruva indeed; ସୁନୀତି-ସୁତଃ-ଅଧିରୋକ୍ଷ୍ୟନ୍ - the son of Suneeti (who was) about to get up,; ଆଚିକ୍ଷିପେ କିଲ ଶିଶୁଃ - the child was severely scolded; ସୁତରାଂ ସୁରୁଚ୍ୟା - as a result by Suruchi; ଦୁସ୍ସଂତ୍ୟଜା ଖଲୁ - indeed (jealousy) cannot be given up; ଭଵତ୍-ଵିମୁଖୈଃ- - by those who are not devoted to Thee; ଅସୂୟା - jealousy;

Translation
Seeing Uttama, Suruchi's son, seated on his father's lap, Suneeti's son Dhruva also tried to get up. But as a result, the child was severely scolded by Suruchi. Indeed, jealousy cannot be given up, by those who are not devoted to Thee.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତ୍ଵନ୍ମୋହିତେ ପିତରି ପଶ୍ୟତି ଦାରଵଶ୍ୟେ
ଦୂରଂ ଦୁରୁକ୍ତିନିହତଃ ସ ଗତୋ ନିଜାଂବାମ୍ ।
ସାଽପି ସ୍ଵକର୍ମଗତିସଂତରଣାୟ ପୁଂସାଂ
ତ୍ଵତ୍ପାଦମେଵ ଶରଣଂ ଶିଶଵେ ଶଶଂସ ॥3॥

Meaning
ତ୍ଵତ୍-ମୋହିତେ ପିତରି - being under the influence of Thy Maayaa, the father; ପଶ୍ୟତି ଦାର୍-ଵଶ୍ୟେ - seeing hen-pecked; ଦୂରଂ ଦୁରୁକ୍ତି-ନିହତଃ ସଃ - he (Dhruva) was taken aback and hurt by the cruel words; ଗତଃ ନିଜ-ଅଂବାମ୍ - (he) went to his own mother; ସା-ଅପି - she also; ସ୍ଵ-କର୍ମ-ଗତି-ସଂତରଣାୟ - for getting over the effects of ones own actions; ପୁଂସାଂ - for human beings; ତ୍ଵତ୍-ପାଦମ୍-ଏଵ ଶରଣଂ - Thy feet are the only refuge; ଶିଶଵେ ଶଶଂସ - (thus) she advised the child;

Translation
The hen-pecked king who was under the influence of Thy Maayaa, silently looked on as Dhruva was scolded by Suruchi. Hurt for being scolded, Dhruva then went to his own mother Suneeti who advised him that the only way to overcome the evils of ones own past actions is to seek shelter at Thy feet.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଆକର୍ଣ୍ୟ ସୋଽପି ଭଵଦର୍ଚନନିଶ୍ଚିତାତ୍ମା
ମାନୀ ନିରେତ୍ୟ ନଗରାତ୍ କିଲ ପଂଚଵର୍ଷଃ ।
ସଂଦୃଷ୍ଟନାରଦନିଵେଦିତମଂତ୍ରମାର୍ଗ-
ସ୍ତ୍ଵାମାରରାଧ ତପସା ମଧୁକାନନାଂତେ ॥4॥

Meaning
ଆକର୍ଣ୍ୟ ସଃ-ଅପି - hearing, he also; ଭଵତ୍-ଅର୍ଚନ-ନିଶ୍ଚିତ-ଆତ୍ମା - determined to devote himself to Thy worship; ମାନୀ ନିରେତ୍ୟ ନଗରାତ୍ - he who had self respect, leaving the town; କିଲ ପଂଚ-ଵର୍ଷଃ - (though) indeed five years of age; ସଂଦୃଷ୍ଟ-ନାରଦ - meeting Naarada,; ନିଵେଦିତ-ମଂତ୍ର-ମାର୍ଗଃ- - and receiving instructions in the path of Mantra (japa); ତ୍ଵାମ୍-ଆରରାଧ ତପସା - propitiated Thee by penance; ମଧୁ-କାନନ-ଅଂତେ - at the end of the forest named Madhu;

Translation
The self respecting Dhruva, who was only five years of age, hearing his mother's words, became determined to worship Thee, and so left the town. In the forest of Madhuvana, he propitiated Thee by penance, following the method of Mantra japa and the Mantra given to him by Naarada, whom he had met on the way.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତାତେ ଵିଷଣ୍ଣହୃଦୟେ ନଗରୀଂ ଗତେନ
ଶ୍ରୀନାରଦେନ ପରିସାଂତ୍ଵିତଚିତ୍ତଵୃତ୍ତୌ ।
ବାଲସ୍ତ୍ଵଦର୍ପିତମନାଃ କ୍ରମଵର୍ଧିତେନ
ନିନ୍ୟେ କଠୋରତପସା କିଲ ପଂଚମାସାନ୍ ॥5॥

Meaning
ତାତେ ଵିଷଣ୍ଣ-ହୃଦୟେ - while the father was full of remorse,; ନଗରୀଂ ଗତେନ ଶ୍ରୀନାରଦେନ - by Shri Naarada, who had gone to the town; ପରିସାଂତ୍ଵିତ-ଚିତ୍ତ-ଵୃତୌ - (his) upset mind was consoled; ବାଲଃ-ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଅର୍ପିତ-ମନାଃ - (meanwhile) the boy with his mind fixed on Thee; କ୍ରମ-ଵର୍ଧିତେନ - with increasing; ନିନ୍ୟେ କଠୋର-ତପସା - intensity carried out severe penance; କିଲ ପଂଚ-ମାସାନ୍ - indeed for five months;

Translation
The king who was full of remorse, was pacified and consoled by Naarada who had gone to the town. Dhruva, the boy with his mind fixed on Thee, spent five months in severe penance, with increasing intensity.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତାଵତ୍ତପୋବଲନିରୁଚ୍ଛ୍-ଵସିତେ ଦିଗଂତେ
ଦେଵାର୍ଥିତସ୍ତ୍ଵମୁଦୟତ୍କରୁଣାର୍ଦ୍ରଚେତାଃ ।
ତ୍ଵଦ୍ରୂପଚିଦ୍ରସନିଲୀନମତେଃ ପୁରସ୍ତା-
ଦାଵିର୍ବଭୂଵିଥ ଵିଭୋ ଗରୁଡାଧିରୂଢଃ ॥6॥

Meaning
ତାଵତ୍-ତପୋ-ବଲ-ନିରୁଚ୍ଛ୍-ଵସିତେ - then,suffocated by the power of penance (of Dhruva); ଦିଗଂତେ - all the directions; ଦେଵ-ଅର୍ଥିତଃ-ତ୍ଵମ୍- - to the devas who were seeking relief, (to them) Thou; ଉଦୟତ୍-କରୁଣା-ଆର୍ଦ୍ର-ଚେତାଃ - with a mind surging with compassion; ତ୍ଵତ୍-ରୂପ-ଚିତ୍-ରସ-ନିଲୀନ-ମତେଃ - (Dhruva) whose mind was absorbed with the Supreme Consciousness Bliss, which had assumed Thy form; ପୁରସ୍ତାତ୍- - in front ( of Dhruva); ଆଵିର୍ବଭୂଵିଥ - (Thou) appeared; ଵିଭୋ - O Lord!; ଗରୁଡ-ଅଧିରୂଢଃ - mounted on Garuda;

Translation
Then, when all around in all the directions there was suffocation by the power of Dhruva's penance, the devas were seeking relief. Then, Thou surging with compassion, appeared seated on Garuda, in front of Dhruva, whose mind was absorbed in contemplation of the Supreme Consciousness Bliss which had assumed Thy form.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତ୍ଵଦ୍ଦର୍ଶନପ୍ରମଦଭାରତରଂଗିତଂ ତଂ
ଦୃଗ୍ଭ୍ୟାଂ ନିମଗ୍ନମିଵ ରୂପରସାୟନେ ତେ ।
ତୁଷ୍ଟୂଷମାଣମଵଗମ୍ୟ କପୋଲଦେଶେ
ସଂସ୍ପୃଷ୍ଟଵାନସି ଦରେଣ ତଥାଽଽଦରେଣ ॥7॥

Meaning
ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଦର୍ଶନ - at the sight of Thee; ପ୍ରମଦ-ଭାର-ତରଂଗିତଂ ତଂ - which completely overwhelmed him with waves of Bliss and ecstasy; ଦୃଗ୍ଭ୍ୟାଂ ନିମଗ୍ନମ୍-ଇଵ - as if his eyes were submerged; ରୂପ-ରସାୟନେ ତେ - in the nectar of Thy entrancing form; ତୁଷ୍ଟୂଷମାଣମ୍- - desirous of singing Thy praise; ଅଵଗମ୍ୟ - understanding (Thou); କପୋଲ-ଦେଶେ - on the cheek; ସଂସ୍ପୃଷ୍ଟଵାନ୍-ଅସି - Thou did touch (him); ଦରେଣ - by the conch; ତଥା-ଆଦରେଣ - and with great affection;

Translation
At Thy divine sight, Dhruva was completely overwhelmed and was full of the the waves of Bliss and ecstasy. As his eyes were submerged in the nectar of Thy entrancing form he was desirous of singing Thy praise. Realising his incapability of finding words, Thou with great affection touched his cheek with the conch.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତାଵଦ୍ଵିବୋଧଵିମଲଂ ପ୍ରଣୁଵଂତମେନ-
ମାଭାଷଥାସ୍ତ୍ଵମଵଗମ୍ୟ ତଦୀୟଭାଵମ୍ ।
ରାଜ୍ୟଂ ଚିରଂ ସମନୁଭୂୟ ଭଜସ୍ଵ ଭୂୟଃ
ସର୍ଵୋତ୍ତରଂ ଧ୍ରୁଵ ପଦଂ ଵିନିଵୃତ୍ତିହୀନମ୍ ॥8॥

Meaning
ତାଵତ୍- - then; ଵିବୋଧ-ଵିମଲଂ - who had been cleansed of all taint by knowledge; ପ୍ରଣୁଵଂତମ୍-ଏନମ୍- - who was profusely praising Thee; ଅଭାଷଥାଃ-ତ୍ଵମ୍- - Thou did tell (him); ଅଵଗମ୍ୟ ତଦୀୟ-ଭାଵମ୍ - knowing what he had in mind; ରାଜ୍ୟଂ ଚିରଂ ସମନୁଭୂୟ - (that) after enjoying kingship for long; ଭଜସ୍ଵ ଭୂୟଃ - attain, thereafter,; ସର୍ଵୋତ୍ତରଂ ଧ୍ରୁଵ ପଦଂ - the loftiest of status of Dhruva; ଵିନିଵୃତ୍ତି-ହୀନଂ - from which there is no return;

Translation
He then sang Thy praise profusely, having been purified and enlightened by pure knowledge. Knowing what he had in mind, Thou blessed him to enjoy the kingdom for long and then attain the loftiest of states, that of Dhruva, from where there is no return to lower states.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଇତ୍ୟୂଚିଷି ତ୍ଵୟି ଗତେ ନୃପନଂଦନୋଽସା-
ଵାନଂଦିତାଖିଲଜନୋ ନଗରୀମୁପେତଃ ।
ରେମେ ଚିରଂ ଭଵଦନୁଗ୍ରହପୂର୍ଣକାମ-
ସ୍ତାତେ ଗତେ ଚ ଵନମାଦୃତରାଜ୍ୟଭାରଃ ॥9॥

Meaning
ଇତି-ଊଚିଷି - having said so; ତ୍ଵୟି ଗତେ - when Thou had gone away; ନୃପନଂଦନଃ-ଅସୌ- - this prince; ଆନଂଦିତ-ଅଖିଲ-ଜନଃ - pleasing all the people; ନଗରୀମ୍-ଉପେତଃ - reached the town; ରେମେ ଚିରଂ - enjoyed for a long time; ଭଵତ୍-ଅନୁଗ୍ରହ-ପୂର୍ଣ-କାମଃ- - with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace; ତାତେ ଗତେ ଚ ଵନମ୍- - and when his father had gone to the forest; ଆଦୃତ-ରାଜ୍ୟ-ଭାରଃ - taking over the administration of the kingdom;

Translation
When Thou disappeared after having said so, this prince Dhruva came back to town delighting all people. When his father had gone to the forest, taking over the administration of the kingdom, with all his aspirations fulfilled by Thy grace, he lived happily for a long time.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ୟକ୍ଷେଣ ଦେଵ ନିହତେ ପୁନରୁତ୍ତମେଽସ୍ମିନ୍
ୟକ୍ଷୈଃ ସ ୟୁଦ୍ଧନିରତୋ ଵିରତୋ ମନୂକ୍ତ୍ୟା ।
ଶାଂତ୍ୟା ପ୍ରସନ୍ନହୃଦୟାଦ୍ଧନଦାଦୁପେତା-
ତ୍ତ୍ଵଦ୍ଭକ୍ତିମେଵ ସୁଦୃଢାମଵୃଣୋନ୍ମହାତ୍ମା ॥10॥

Meaning
ୟକ୍ଷେଣ - by Yaksha; ଦେଵ - O Lord!; ନିହତେ ପୁନଃ- - being killed, then; ଉତ୍ତମେ-ଅସ୍ମିନ୍ - this Uttama (Dhruva's brother); ୟକ୍ଷୈଃ ସ ୟୁଦ୍ଧ-ନିରତଃ - he engaged in a fight with the Yakshas; ଵିରତଃ ମନୁ-ଉକ୍ତ୍ୟା - and withdrew on Manu's advice; ଶାଂତ୍ୟା ପ୍ରସନ୍ନ-ହୃଦୟାତ୍- - who was happy at the peaceful nature (of Dhruva); ଧନଦାତ୍-ଉପେତାତ୍ - from Kuber who had approached him (Dhruva); ତ୍ଵତ୍-ଭକ୍ତିମ୍-ଏଵ ସୁଦୃଢାମ୍- - Thy firm devotion alone; ଅଵୃଣୋତ୍- - asked for as a boon; ମହାତ୍ମା - the great souled one (Dhruva);

Translation
When Uttama, Dhruva's brother was killed by Yaksha, Dhruva battled with Yaksha, but withdrew on Manu's advice. Pleased with Dhruva's peaceful nature, Kuber came and offered him a boon, but the great soul asked only for firm devotion to Thee.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅଂତେ ଭଵତ୍ପୁରୁଷନୀତଵିମାନୟାତୋ
ମାତ୍ରା ସମଂ ଧ୍ରୁଵପଦେ ମୁଦିତୋଽୟମାସ୍ତେ ।
ଏଵଂ ସ୍ଵଭୃତ୍ୟଜନପାଲନଲୋଲଧୀସ୍ତ୍ଵଂ
ଵାତାଲୟାଧିପ ନିରୁଂଧି ମମାମୟୌଘାନ୍ ॥11॥

Meaning
ଅଂତେ - finally; ଭଵତ୍-ପୁରୁଷ-ନୀତ-ଵିମାନ-ୟାତଃ - going in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants; ମାତ୍ରା ସମଂ - along with his mother; ଧ୍ରୁଵପଦେ ମୁଦିତଃ-ଅୟମ୍-ଆସ୍ତେ - (he) is living happily even now in Dhruvaloka; ଏଵଂ - in this manner; ସ୍ଵ-ଭୃତ୍ୟ-ଜନ-ପାଲନ-ଲୋଲ-ଧୀଃ-ତ୍ଵଂ - Thou who are ever eager minded to protect Thy devotees; ଵାତାଲୟାଧିପ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ନିରୁଂଧି - cure; ମମ-ଆମୟ-ଔଘାନ୍ - my hoards of ailments;

Translation
Finally, leaving along with his mother in the celestial car brought by Thy attendants, he is even now living happily in Dhruvaloka. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are ever intent on protecting Thy devotees, cure my hoards of ailments.
