ଧୃତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ର ଉଵାଚ
ଧର୍ମକ୍ଷେତ୍ରେ କୁରୁକ୍ଷେତ୍ରେ ସମଵେତା ୟୁୟୁତ୍ସଵଃ ।
ମାମକାଃ ପାଂଡଵାଶ୍ଚୈଵ କିମକୁର୍ଵତ ସଂଜୟ ॥ 1 ॥

Meaning
ଧୃତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରଃ ଉଵାଚ — King Dhritarāṣṭra said; ଧର୍ମ-କ୍ଷେତ୍ରେ — in the place of pilgrimage; କୁରୁ-କ୍ଷେତ୍ରେ — in the place named Kurukṣetra; ସମଵେତାଃ — assembled; ୟୁୟୁତ୍ସଵଃ — desiring to fight; ମାମକାଃ — my party (sons); ପାଂଡଵାଃ — the sons of Pāṇḍu; ଚ — and; ଏଵ — certainly; କିମ୍ — what; ଅକୁର୍ଵତ — did they do; ସଂଜୟ — O Sañjaya.

Translation
Dhritarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସଂଜୟ ଉଵାଚ
ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା ତୁ ପାଂଡଵାନୀକଂ ଵ୍ୟୂଢଂ ଦୁର୍ୟୋଧନସ୍ତଦା ।
ଆଚାର୍ୟମୁପସଂଗମ୍ୟ ରାଜା ଵଚନମବ୍ରଵୀତ୍ ॥ 2 ॥

Meaning
ସଂଜୟଃ ଉଵାଚ — Sañjaya said; ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା — after seeing; ତୁ — but; ପାଂଡଵ-ଅନୀକମ୍ — the soldiers of the Pāṇḍavas; ଵ୍ୟୂଢମ୍ — arranged in a military phalanx; ଦୁର୍ୟୋଧନଃ — King Duryodhana; ତଦା — at that time; ଆଚାର୍ୟମ୍ — the teacher; ଉପସଂଗମ୍ୟ — approaching; ରାଜା — the king; ଵଚନମ୍ — words; ଅବ୍ରଵୀତ୍ — spoke.

Translation
Sañjaya said: O King, after looking over the army arranged in military formation by the sons of Pāṇḍu, King Duryodhana went to his teacher and spoke the following words.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ପଶ୍ୟୈତାଂ ପାଂଡୁପୁତ୍ରାଣାମାଚାର୍ୟ ମହତୀଂ ଚମୂମ୍ ।
ଵ୍ୟୂଢାଂ ଦ୍ରୁପଦପୁତ୍ରେଣ ତଵ ଶିଷ୍ୟେଣ ଧୀମତା ॥ 3 ॥

Meaning
ପଶ୍ୟ — behold; ଏତାମ୍ — this; ପାଂଡୁ-ପୁତ୍ରାନାମ୍ — of the sons of Pāṇḍu; ଆଚାର୍ୟ — O teacher; ମହତୀମ୍ — great; ଚମୂମ୍ — military force; ଵ୍ୟୂଢାମ୍ — arranged; ଦ୍ରୁପଦ-ପୁତ୍ରେଣ — by the son of Drupada; ତଵ — your; ଶିଷ୍ୟେଣ — disciple; ଧୀ-ମତା — very intelligent.

Translation
O my teacher, behold the great army of the sons of Pāṇḍu, so expertly arranged by your intelligent disciple the son of Drupada.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅତ୍ର ଶୂରା ମହେଷ୍ଵାସା ଭୀମାର୍ଜୁନସମା ୟୁଧି ।
ୟୁୟୁଧାନୋ ଵିରାଟଶ୍ଚ ଦ୍ରୁପଦଶ୍ଚ ମହାରଥଃ ॥ 4 ॥

Meaning
ଅତ୍ର — here; ଶୂରାଃ — heroes; ମହା-ଇଷୁ-ଆସାଃ — mighty bowmen; ଭୀମ-ଅର୍ଜୁନ — to Bhīma and Arjuna; ସମାଃ — equal; ୟୁଧି — in the fight; ୟୁୟୁଧାନଃ — Yuyudhāna; ଵିରାଟଃ — Virāṭa; ଚ — also; ଦ୍ରୁପଦଃ — Drupada; ଚ — also; ମହା-ରଥଃ — great fighter.

Translation
Here in this army are many heroic bowmen equal in fighting to Bhīma and Arjuna: great fighters like Yuyudhāna, Virāṭa and Drupada.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଧୃଷ୍ଟକେତୁଶ୍ଚେକିତାନଃ କାଶିରାଜଶ୍ଚ ଵୀର୍ୟଵାନ୍ ।
ପୁରୁଜିତ୍କୁଂତିଭୋଜଶ୍ଚ ଶୈବ୍ୟଶ୍ଚ ନରପୁଂଗଵଃ ॥ 5 ॥

Meaning
ଧୃଷ୍ଟକେତୁଃ — Dhriṣṭaketu; ଚେକିତାନଃ — Cekitāna; କାଶିରାଜଃ — Kāśirāja; ଚ — also; ଵୀର୍ୟ-ଵାନ୍ — very powerful; ପୁରୁଜିତ୍ — Purujit; କୁଂତିଭୋଜଃ — Kuntibhoja; ଚ — and; ଶୈବ୍ୟଃ — Śaibya; ଚ — and; ନର-ପୁଂଗଵଃ — hero in human society.

Translation
There are also great heroic, powerful fighters like Dhriṣṭaketu, Cekitāna, Kāśirāja, Purujit, Kuntibhoja and Śaibya.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ୟୁଧାମନ୍ୟୁଶ୍ଚ ଵିକ୍ରାଂତ ଉତ୍ତମୌଜାଶ୍ଚ ଵୀର୍ୟଵାନ୍ ।
ସୌଭଦ୍ରୋ ଦ୍ରୌପଦେୟାଶ୍ଚ ସର୍ଵ ଏଵ ମହାରଥାଃ ॥ 6 ॥

Meaning
ୟୁଧାମନ୍ୟୁଃ — Yudhāmanyu; ଚ — and; ଵିକ୍ରାଂତଃ — mighty; ଉତ୍ତମୌଜାଃ — Uttamaujā; ଚ — and; ଵୀର୍ୟ-ଵାନ୍ — very powerful; ସୌଭଦ୍ରଃ — the son of Subhadrā; ଦ୍ରୌପଦେୟାଃ — the sons of Draupadī; ଚ — and; ସର୍ଵେ — all; ଏଵ — certainly; ମହା-ରଥାଃ — great chariot fighters.

Translation
There are the mighty Yudhāmanyu, the very powerful Uttamaujā, the son of Subhadrā and the sons of Draupadī. All these warriors are great chariot fighters.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅସ୍ମାକଂ ତୁ ଵିଶିଷ୍ଟା ୟେ ତାନ୍ନିବୋଧ ଦ୍ଵିଜୋତ୍ତମ ।
ନାୟକା ମମ ସୈନ୍ୟସ୍ୟ ସଂଜ୍ଞାର୍ଥ ତାନ୍ବ୍ରଵୀମି ତେ ॥ 7 ॥

Meaning
ଅସ୍ମାକମ୍ — our; ତୁ — but; ଵିଶିଷ୍ଟାଃ — especially powerful; ୟେ — who; ତାନ୍ — them; ନିବୋଧ — just take note of, be informed; ଦ୍ଵିଜ-ଉତ୍ତମ — O best of the brāhmaṇas; ନାୟକାଃ — captains; ମମ — my; ସୈନ୍ୟସ୍ୟ — of the soldiers; ସଂଜ୍ଞା-ଅର୍ଥମ୍ — for information; ତାନ୍ — them; ବ୍ରଵୀମି — I am speaking; ତେ — to you.

Translation
But for your information, O best of the brāhmaṇas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଭଵାନ୍ଭୀଷ୍ମଶ୍ଚ କର୍ଣଶ୍ଚ କୃପଶ୍ଚ ସମିତିଂଜୟଃ ।
ଅଶ୍ଵତ୍ଥାମା ଵିକର୍ଣଶ୍ଚ ସୌମଦତ୍ତିସ୍ତଥୈଵ ଚ ॥ 8 ॥

Meaning
ଭଵାନ୍ — your good self; ଭୀଷ୍ମଃ — Grandfather Bhīṣma; ଚ — also; କର୍ଣଃ — Karṇa; ଚ — and; କୃପଃ — Kripa; ଚ — and; ସମିତିମ୍-ଜୟଃ — always victorious in battle; ଅଶ୍ଵତ୍ଥାମା — Aśvatthāmā; ଵିକର୍ଣଃ — Vikarṇa; ଚ — as well as; ସୌମଦତ୍ତିଃ — the son of Somadatta; ତଥା — as well as; ଏଵ — certainly; ଚ — also.

Translation
There are personalities like you, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kripa, Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇa and the son of Somadatta called Bhūriśravā, who are always victorious in battle.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅନ୍ୟେ ଚ ବହଵଃ ଶୂରା ମଦର୍ଥେ ତ୍ୟକ୍ତଜୀଵିତାଃ ।
ନାନାଶସ୍ତ୍ରପ୍ରହରଣାଃ ସର୍ଵେ ୟୁଦ୍ଧଵିଶାରଦାଃ ॥ 9 ॥

Meaning
ଅନ୍ୟେ — others; ଚ — also; ବହଵଃ — in great numbers; ଶୂରାଃ — heroes; ମତ୍-ଅର୍ଥେ — for my sake; ତ୍ୟକ୍ତ-ଜୀଵିତାଃ — prepared to risk life; ନାନା — many; ଶସ୍ତ୍ର — weapons; ପ୍ରହରଣାଃ — equipped with; ସର୍ଵେ — all of them; ୟୁଦ୍ଧ-ଵିଶାରଦାଃ — experienced in military science.

Translation
There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅପର୍ୟାପ୍ତ‍ଂ ତଦସ୍ମାକଂ ବଲଂ ଭୀଷ୍ମାଭିରକ୍ଷିତମ୍ ।
ପର୍ୟାପ୍ତ‍ଂ ତ୍ଵିଦମେତେଷାଂ ବଲଂ ଭୀମାଭିରକ୍ଷିତମ୍ ॥ 10 ॥

Meaning
ଅପର୍ୟାପ୍ତମ୍ — immeasurable; ତତ୍ — that; ଅସ୍ମାକମ୍ — of ours; ବଲମ୍ — strength; ଭୀଷ୍ମ — by Grandfather Bhīṣma; ଅଭିରକ୍ଷିତମ୍ — perfectly protected; ପର୍ୟାପ୍ତମ୍ — limited; ତୁ — but; ଇଦମ୍ — all this; ଏତେଷାମ୍ — of the Pāṇḍavas; ବଲମ୍ — strength; ଭୀମ — by Bhīma; ଅଭିରକ୍ଷିତମ୍ — carefully protected.

Translation
Our strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhīṣma, whereas the strength of the Pāṇḍavas, carefully protected by Bhīma, is limited.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅୟନେଷୁ ଚ ସର୍ଵେଷୁ ୟଥାଭାଗଵମସ୍ଥିତାଃ ।
ଭୀଷ୍ମମେଵାଭିରକ୍ଷଂତୁ ଭଵଂତଃ ସର୍ଵ ଏଵ ହି ॥ 11 ॥

Meaning
ଅୟନେଷୁ — in the strategic points; ଚ — also; ସର୍ଵେଷୁ — everywhere; ୟଥା-ଭାଗମ୍ — as differently arranged; ଅଵସ୍ଥିତାଃ — situated; ଭୀଷ୍ମମ୍ — unto Grandfather Bhīṣma; ଏଵ — certainly; ଅଭିରକ୍ଷଂତୁ — should give support; ଭଵଂତଃ — you; ସର୍ଵେ — all respectively; ଏଵ ହି — certainly.

Translation
All of you must now give full support to Grandfather Bhīṣma, as you stand at your respective strategic points of entrance into the phalanx of the army.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତସ୍ୟ ସଂଜନୟନ୍ହର୍ଷଂ କୁରୁଵୃଦ୍ଧଃ ପିତାମହଃ ।
ସିଂହନାଦଂ ଵିନଦ୍ୟୋଚ୍ଚ‍ଐଃ ଶଂଖଂ ଦଧ୍ମୌ ପ୍ରତାପଵାନ୍ ॥ 12 ॥

Meaning
ତସ୍ୟ — his; ସଂଜନୟନ୍ — increasing; ହର୍ଷମ୍ — cheerfulness; କୁରୁ-ଵୃଦ୍ଧଃ — the grandsire of the Kuru dynasty (Bhīṣma); ପିତାମହଃ — the grandfather; ସିଂହ-ନାଦମ୍ — roaring sound, like that of a lion; ଵିନଦ୍ୟ — vibrating; ଉଚ୍ଚୈଃ — very loudly; ଶଂଖମ୍ — conchshell; ଦଧ୍ମୌ — blew; ପ୍ରତାପ-ଵାନ୍ — the valiant.

Translation
Then Bhīṣma, the great valiant grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, the grandfather of the fighters, blew his conchshell very loudly, making a sound like the roar of a lion, giving Duryodhana joy.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତତଃ ଶଂଖାଶ୍ଚ ଭେର୍ୟଶ୍ଚ ପଣଵାନକଗୋମୁଖାଃ ।
ସହସୈଵାଭ୍ୟହନ୍ୟଂତ ସ ଶବ୍ଦସ୍ତୁମୁଲୋଽଭଵତ୍ ॥ 13 ॥

Meaning
ତତଃ — thereafter; ଶଂଖାଃ — conchshells; ଚ — also; ଭେର୍ୟଃ — large drums; ଚ — and; ପଣଵ-ଆନକ — small drums and kettledrums; ଗୋ-ମୁଖାଃ — horns; ସହସା — all of a sudden; ଏଵ — certainly; ଅଭ୍ୟହନ୍ୟଂତ — were simultaneously sounded; ସଃ — that; ଶବ୍ଦଃ — combined sound; ତୁମୁଲଃ — tumultuous; ଅଭଵତ୍ — became.

Translation
After that, the conchshells, drums, bugles, trumpets and horns were all suddenly sounded, and the combined sound was tumultuous.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତତଃ ଶ୍ଵେତୈର୍ହୟୈର୍ୟୁକ୍ତେ ମହତି ସ୍ୟଂଦନେ ସ୍ଥିତୌ ।
ମାଧଵଃ ପାଂଡଵଶ୍ଚୈଵ ଦିଵ୍ୟୌ ଶଂଖୌ ପ୍ରଦଧ୍ମତୁଃ ॥ 14 ॥

Meaning
ତତଃ — thereafter; ଶ୍ଵେତୈଃ — with white; ହୟୈଃ — horses; ୟୁକ୍ତେ — being yoked; ମହତି — in a great; ସ୍ୟଂଦନେ — chariot; ସ୍ଥିତୌ — situated; ମାଧଵଃ — Kriṣṇa (the husband of the goddess of fortune); ପାଂଡଵଃ — Arjuna (the son of Pāṇḍu); ଚ — also; ଏଵ — certainly; ଦିଵ୍ୟୌ — transcendental; ଶଂଖୌ — conchshells; ପ୍ରଦଧ୍ମତୁଃ — sounded.

Translation
On the other side, both Lord Kriṣṇa and Arjuna, stationed on a great chariot drawn by white horses, sounded their transcendental conchshells.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ପାଂଚଜନ୍ୟଂ ହୃଷୀକେଶୋ ଦେଵଦତ୍ତଂ ଧନଂଜୟଃ ।
ପୌଂଡ୍ରଂ ଦଧ୍ମୌ ମହାଶଂଖଂ ଭୀମକର୍ମା ଵୃକୋଦରଃ ॥ 15 ॥

Meaning
ପାଂଚଜନ୍ୟମ୍ — the conchshell named Pāñcajanya; ହୃଷୀକ-ଈଶଃ — Hriṣīkeśa (Kriṣṇa, the Lord who directs the senses of the devotees); ଦେଵଦତ୍ତମ୍ — the conchshell named Devadatta; ଧନମ୍-ଜୟଃ — Dhanañjaya (Arjuna, the winner of wealth); ପୌଂଡ୍ରମ୍ — the conch named Pauṇḍra; ଦଧ୍ମୌ — blew; ମହା-ଶଂଖମ୍ — the terrific conchshell; ଭୀମ-କର୍ମା — one who performs herculean tasks; ଵୃକ-ଉଦରଃ — the voracious eater (Bhīma).

Translation
Lord Kriṣṇa blew His conchshell, called Pāñcajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhīma, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell, called Pauṇḍra.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅନଂତଵିଜୟଂ ରାଜା କୁଂତୀପୁତ୍ରୋ ୟୁଧିଷ୍ଠିରଃ ।
ନକୁଲଃ ସହଦେଵଶ୍ଚ ସୁଘୋଷମଣିପୁଷ୍ପକୌ ॥ 16 ॥
କାଶ୍ୟଶ୍ଚ ପରମେଷ୍ଵାସଃ ଶିଖଂଡୀ ଚ ମହାରଥଃ ।
ଧୃଷ୍ଟଦ୍ୟୁମ୍ନୋ ଵିରାଟଶ୍ଚ ସାତ୍ୟକିଶ୍ଚାପରାଜିତଃ ॥ 17 ॥
ଦ୍ରୁପଦୋ ଦ୍ରୌପଦେୟାଶ୍ଚ ସର୍ଵଶଃ ପୃଥିଵୀପତେ ।
ସୌଭଦ୍ରଶ୍ଚ ମହାବାହୁଃ ଶଂଖାଂଦଧ୍ମୁଃ ପୃଥକ୍ପୃଥକ୍ ॥ 18 ॥

ଅନଂତ-ଵିଜୟମ୍ — the conch named Ananta-vijaya; ରାଜା — the king; କୁଂତୀ-ପୁତ୍ରଃ — the son of Kuntī; ୟୁଧିଷ୍ଠିରଃ — Yudhiṣṭhira; ନକୁଲଃ — Nakula; ସହଦେଵଃ — Sahadeva; ଚ — and; ସୁଘୋଷ-ମଣିପୁଷ୍ପକୌ — the conches named Sughoṣa and Maṇipuṣpaka; କାଶ୍ୟଃ — the King of Kāśī (Vārāṇasī); ଚ — and; ପରମ-ଇଷୁ-ଆସଃ — the great archer; ଶିଖଂଡୀ — Śikhaṇḍī; ଚ — also; ମହା-ରଥଃ — one who can fight alone against thousands; ଧୃଷ୍ଟଦ୍ୟୁମ୍ନଃ — Dhriṣṭadyumna (the son of King Drupada); ଵିରାଟଃ — Virāṭa (the prince who gave shelter to the Pāṇḍavas while they were in disguise); ଚ — also; ସାତ୍ୟକିଃ — Sātyaki (the same as Yuyudhāna, the charioteer of Lord Kriṣṇa); ଚ — and; ଅପରାଜିତଃ — who had never been vanquished; ଦ୍ରୁପଦଃ — Drupada, the King of Pāñcāla; ଦ୍ରୌପଦେୟାଃ — the sons of Draupadī; ଚ — also; ସର୍ଵଶଃ — all; ପୃଥିଵୀ-ପତେ — O King; ସୌଭଦ୍ରଃ — Abhimanyu, the son of Subhadrā; ଚ — also; ମହା-ବାହୁଃ — mighty-armed; ଶଂଖାନ୍ — conchshells; ଦଧ୍ମୁଃ — blew; ପୃଥକ୍ ପୃଥକ୍ — each separately.

Translation
King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, blew his conchshell, the Ananta-vijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva blew the Sughoṣa and Maṇipuṣpaka. That great archer the King of Kāśī, the great fighter Śikhaṇḍī, Dhriṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, the unconquerable Sātyaki, Drupada, the sons of Draupadī, and others, O King, such as the mighty-armed son of Subhadrā, all blew their respective conchshells.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସ ଘୋଷୋ ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରାଣାଂ ହୃଦୟାନି ଵ୍ୟଦାରୟତ୍ ।
ନଭଶ୍ଚ ପୃଥିଵୀଂ ଚୈଵ ତୁମୁଲୋଽଭ୍ୟନୁନାଦୟନ୍ ॥ 19 ॥

Meaning
ସଃ — that; ଘୋଷଃ — vibration; ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରାଣାମ୍ — of the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra; ହୃଦୟାନି — hearts; ଵ୍ୟଦାରୟତ୍ — shattered; ନଭଃ — the sky; ଚ — also; ପୃଥିଵୀମ୍ — the surface of the earth; ଚ — also; ଏଵ — certainly; ତୁମୁଲଃ — uproarious; ଅଭ୍ୟନୁନାଦୟନ୍ — resounding.

Translation
The blowing of these different conchshells became uproarious. Vibrating both in the sky and on the earth, it shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅଥ ଵ୍ୟଵସ୍ଥିତାଂଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରାନ୍କପିଧ୍ଵଜଃ ।
ପ୍ରଵୃତ୍ତେ ଶସ୍ତ୍ରସଂପାତେ ଧନୁରୁଦ୍ୟମ୍ୟ ପାଂଡଵଃ ।
ହୃଷୀକେଶଂ ତଦା ଵାକ୍ୟମିଦମାହ ମହୀପତେ ॥ 20 ॥

Meaning
ଅଥ — thereupon; ଵ୍ୟଵସ୍ଥିତାନ୍ — situated; ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା — looking upon; ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରାନ୍ — the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra; କପି-ଧ୍ଵଜଃ — he whose flag was marked with Hanumān; ପ୍ରଵୃତ୍ତେ — while about to engage; ଶସ୍ତ୍ର-ସଂପାତେ — in releasing his arrows; ଧନୁଃ — bow; ଉଦ୍ୟମ୍ୟ — taking up; ପାଂଡଵଃ — the son of Pāṇḍu (Arjuna); ହୃଷୀକେଶମ୍ — unto Lord Kriṣṇa; ତଦା — at that time; ଵାକ୍ୟମ୍ — words; ଇଦମ୍ — these; ଆହ — said; ମହୀ-ପତେ — O King.

Translation
At that time Arjuna, the son of Pāṇḍu, seated in the chariot bearing the flag marked with Hanumān, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows. O King, after looking at the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra drawn in military array, Arjuna then spoke to Lord Kriṣṇa these words.

ଅର୍ଜୁନ ଉଵାଚ

Arjuna said: O infallible one, please draw my chariot between the two armies so that I may see those present here, who desire to fight, and with whom I must contend in this great trial of arms.

ୟୋତ୍ସ୍ୟମାନାନଵେକ୍ଷେଽହଂ ୟ ଏତେଽତ୍ର ସମାଗତାଃ ।
ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରସ୍ୟ ଦୁର୍ବୁଦ୍ଧେର୍ୟୁଦ୍ଧେ ପ୍ରିୟଚିକୀର୍ଷଵଃ ॥ 23 ॥

Sañjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, having thus been addressed by Arjuna, Lord Kriṣṇa drew up the fine chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties.

ଭୀଷ୍ମଦ୍ରୋଣପ୍ରମୁଖତଃ ସର୍ଵେଷାଂ ଚ ମହୀକ୍ଷିତାମ୍ ।
ଉଵାଚ ପାର୍ଥ ପଶ୍ୟୈତାନ୍ସମଵେତାନ୍କୁରୁନିତି ॥ 25 ॥

In the presence of Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the other chieftains of the world, the Lord said, “Just behold, Pārtha, all the Kurus assembled here.”

ତତ୍ରାପଶ୍ୟତ୍ସ୍ଥିତାନ୍ପାର୍ଥଃ ପିତୄନଥ ପିତାମହାନ୍।
ଆଚାର୍ୟାନ୍ମାତୁଲାନ୍ଭ୍ରାତୄନ୍ପୁତ୍ରାନ୍ପୌତ୍ରାନ୍ସଖୀଂସ୍ତଥା।

There Arjuna could see, within the midst of the armies of both parties, his fathers, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, and also his fathers-in-law and well-wishers.

ତାନ୍ସମୀକ୍ଷ୍ୟ ସ କୌଂତେୟଃ ସର୍ଵାନ୍ବଂଧୂନଵସ୍ଥିତାନ୍ ।
କୃପୟା ପରୟାଵିଷ୍ଟୋ ଵିଷୀଦନ୍ନିଦମବ୍ରଵୀତ୍ ॥ 27 ॥

Translation
When the son of Kuntī, Arjuna, saw all these different grades of friends and relatives, he became overwhelmed with compassion and spoke thus.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅର୍ଜୁନ ଉଵାଚ
ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵେମଂ ସ୍ଵଜନଂ କୃଷ୍ଣ ୟୁୟୁତ୍ସୁଂ ସମୁପସ୍ଥିତମ୍ ।

Arjuna said: My dear Kriṣṇa, seeing my friends and relatives present before me in such a fighting spirit, I feel the limbs of my body quivering and my mouth drying up.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଵେପଥୁଶ୍ଚ ଶରୀରେ ମେ ରୋମହର୍ଷଶ୍ଚ ଜାୟତେ ।
ଗାଂଡୀଵଂ ସ୍ରଂସତେ ହସ୍ତାତ୍ତ୍ଵକ୍ଚ‍ଐଵ ପରିଦହ୍ୟତେ ॥ 29 ॥

Translation
My whole body is trembling, my hair is standing on end, my bow Gāṇḍīva is slipping from my hand, and my skin is burning.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ନ ଚ ଶକ୍ନୋମ୍ୟଵସ୍ଥାତୁଂ ଭ୍ରମତୀଵ ଚ ମେ ମନଃ ।
ନିମିତ୍ତାନି ଚ ପଶ୍ୟାମି ଵିପରୀତାନି କେଶଵ ॥ 30 ॥

ନ ଚ ଶ୍ରେୟୋଽନୁପଶ୍ୟାମି ହତ୍ଵା ସ୍ଵଜନମାହଵେ ।
ନ କାଂକ୍ଷେ ଵିଜୟଂ କୃଷ୍ଣ ନ ଚ ରାଜ୍ୟଂ ସୁଖାନି ଚ ॥ 31 ॥

କିଂ ନୋ ରାଜ୍ୟେନ ଗୋଵିଂଦ କିଂ ଭୋଗୈର୍ଜୀଵିତେନ ଵା ।
ୟେଷାମର୍ଥେ କାଙ୍‍‍କ୍ଷିତଂ ନୋ ରାଜ୍ୟଂ ଭୋଗାଃ ସୁଖାନି ଚ ॥ 32 ॥
ତ ଇମେଽଵସ୍ଥିତା ୟୁଦ୍ଧେ ପ୍ରାଣାଂସ୍ତ୍ୟକ୍ତ୍ଵା ଧନାନି ଚ ।
ଆଚାର୍ୟାଃ ପିତରଃ ପୁତ୍ରାସ୍ତଥୈଵ ଚ ପିତାମହାଃ ॥ 33 ॥

Translation
O Govinda, of what avail to us are a kingdom, happiness or even life itself when all those for whom we may desire them are now arrayed on this battlefield? O Madhusūdana, when teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and other relatives are ready to give up their lives and properties and are standing before me, why should I wish to kill them, even though they might otherwise kill me? O maintainer of all living entities, I am not prepared to fight with them even in exchange for the three worlds, let alone this earth. What pleasure will we derive from killing the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra?

ପାପମେଵାଶ୍ରୟେଦସ୍ମାନ୍ହତ୍ଵୈତାନାତତାୟିନଃ ।
ତସ୍ମାନ୍ନାର୍ହା ଵୟଂ ହଂତୁଂ ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରାନ୍ସବାଂଧଵାନ୍ ।
ସ୍ଵଜନଂ ହି କଥଂ ହତ୍ଵା ସୁଖିନଃ ସ୍ୟାମ ମାଧଵ ॥ 36 ॥

Translation
Sin will overcome us if we slay such aggressors. Therefore it is not proper for us to kill the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra and our friends. What should we gain, O Kriṣṇa, husband of the goddess of fortune, and how could we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ୟଦ୍ୟପ୍ୟେତେ ନ ପଶ୍ୟଂତି ଲୋଭୋପହତଚେତସଃ ।
କୁଲକ୍ଷୟକୃତଂ ଦୋଷଂ ମିତ୍ରଦ୍ରୋହେ ଚ ପାତକମ୍ ॥ 37 ॥
କଥଂ ନ ଜ୍ଞେୟମସ୍ମାଭିଃ ପାପାଦସ୍ମନ୍ନିଵର୍ତିତୁମ୍ ।
କୁଲକ୍ଷୟକୃତଂ ଦୋଷଂ ପ୍ରପଶ୍ୟଦ୍ଭ‍ଇର୍ଜନାର୍ଦନ ॥ 38 ॥

Translation
O Janārdana, although these men, their hearts overtaken by greed, see no fault in killing one’s family or quarreling with friends, why should we, who can see the crime in destroying a family, engage in these acts of sin?

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
କୁଲକ୍ଷୟେ ପ୍ରଣଶ୍ୟଂତି କୁଲଧର୍ମାଃ ସନାତନାଃ ।
ଧର୍ମେ ନଷ୍ଟେ କୁଲଂ କୃତ୍ସ୍ନମଧର୍ମୋଽଭିଭଵତ୍ୟୁତ ॥ 39 ॥

କୁଲ-କ୍ଷୟେ — in destroying the family; ପ୍ରଣଶ୍ୟଂତି — become vanquished; କୁଲ-ଧର୍ମାଃ — the family traditions; ସନାତନାଃ — eternal; ଧର୍ମେ — religion; ନଷ୍ଟେ — being destroyed; କୁଲମ୍ — family; କୃତ୍ସ୍ନମ୍ — whole; ଅଧର୍ମଃ — irreligion; ଅଭିଭଵତି — transforms; ଉତ — it is said.

Translation
With the destruction of the dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligion.

ଅଧର୍ମାଭିଭଵାତ୍କୃଷ୍ଣ ପ୍ରଦୁଷ୍ୟଂତି କୁଲସ୍ତ୍ରିୟଃ ।

ଅଧର୍ମ — irreligion; ଅଭିଭଵାତ୍ — having become predominant; କୃଷ୍ଣ — O Kriṣṇa; ପ୍ରଦୁଷ୍ୟଂତି — become polluted; କୁଲ-ସ୍ତ୍ରିୟଃ — family ladies; ସ୍ତ୍ରୀଷୁ — by the womanhood; ଦୁଷ୍ଟାସୁ — being so polluted; ଵାର୍ଷ୍ଣେୟ — O descendant of Vriṣṇi; ଜାୟତେ — comes into being; ଵର୍ଣ-ସଂକରଃ — unwanted progeny.

Translation
When irreligion is prominent in the family, O Kriṣṇa, the women of the family become polluted, and from the degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vriṣṇi, comes unwanted progeny.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସଂକରୋ ନରକାୟୈଵ କୁଲଘ୍ନ‍ଆନାଂ କୁଲସ୍ୟ ଚ ।
ପତଂତି ପିତରୋ ହ୍ୟେଷାଂ ଲୁପ୍ତପିଂଡୋଦକକ୍ରିୟାଃ ॥ 41 ॥

Meaning
ସଂକରଃ — such unwanted children; ନରକାୟ — make for hellish life; ଏଵ — certainly; କୁଲ-ଘ୍ନାନାମ୍ — for those who are killers of the family; କୁଲସ୍ୟ — for the family; ଚ — also; ପତଂତି — fall down; ପିତରଃ — forefathers; ହି — certainly; ଏଷାମ୍ — of them; ଲୁପ୍ତ — stopped; ପିଂଡ — of offerings of food; ଉଦକ — and water; କ୍ରିୟାଃ — performances.

Translation
An increase of unwanted population certainly causes hellish life both for the family and for those who destroy the family tradition. The ancestors of such corrupt families fall down, because the performances for offering them food and water are entirely stopped.

ଦୋଷୈରେତୈଃ କୁଲଘ୍ନ‍ଆନାଂ ଵର୍ଣସଂକରକାରକୈଃ ।
ଉତ୍ସାଦ୍ୟଂତେ ଜାତିଧର୍ମାଃ କୁଲଧର୍ମାଶ୍ଚ ଶାଶ୍ଵତାଃ ॥ 42 ॥

Meaning
ଦୋଷୈଃ — by such faults; ଏତୈଃ — all these; କୁଲ-ଘ୍ନାନାମ୍ — of the destroyers of the family; ଵର୍ଣ-ସଂକର — of unwanted children; କାରକୈଃ — which are causes; ଉତ୍ସାଦ୍ୟଂତେ — are devastated; ଜାତି-ଧର୍ମାଃ — community projects; କୁଲ-ଧର୍ମାଃ — family traditions; ଚ — also; ଶାଶ୍ଵତାଃ — eternal.

Translation
By the evil deeds of those who destroy the family tradition and thus give rise to unwanted children, all kinds of community projects and family welfare activities are devastated.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଉତ୍ସନ୍ନକୁଲଧର୍ମାଣାଂ ମନୁଷ୍ୟାଣାଂ ଜନାର୍ଦନ ।
ନରକେ ନିୟତଂ ଵାସୋ ଭଵତୀତ୍ୟନୁଶ‍ଉଶ୍ରୁମ ॥ 43 ॥

Meaning
ଉତ୍ସନ୍ନ — spoiled; କୁଲ-ଧର୍ମାଣାମ୍ — of those who have the family traditions; ମନୁଷ୍ୟାଣାମ୍ — of such men; ଜନାର୍ଦନ — O Kriṣṇa; ନରକେ — in hell; ନିୟତମ୍ — always; ଵାସଃ — residence; ଭଵତି — it so becomes; ଇତି — thus; ଅନୁଶୁଶ୍ରୁମ — I have heard by disciplic succession.

Translation
O Kriṣṇa, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those whose family traditions are destroyed dwell always in hell.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅହୋ ବତ ମହତ୍ପାପଂ କର୍ତୁଂ ଵ୍ୟଵସିତା ଵୟମ୍ ।
ୟଦ୍ରାଜ୍ୟସୁଖଲୋଭେନ ହଂତୁଂ ସ୍ଵଜନମୁଦ୍ୟତାଃ ॥ 44 ॥

Meaning
ଅହୋ — alas; ବତ — how strange it is; ମହତ୍ — great; ପାପମ୍ — sins; କର୍ତୁମ୍ — to perform; ଵ୍ୟଵସିତାଃ — have decided; ଵୟମ୍ — we; ୟତ୍ — because; ରାଜ୍ୟ-ସୁଖ-ଲୋଭେନ — driven by greed for royal happiness; ହଂତୁମ୍ — to kill; ସ୍ଵ-ଜନମ୍ — kinsmen; ଉଦ୍ୟତାଃ — trying.

Translation
Alas, how strange it is that we are preparing to commit greatly sinful acts. Driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness, we are intent on killing our own kinsmen.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ୟଦି ମାମପ୍ରତୀକାରମଶସ୍ତ୍ରଂ ଶସ୍ତ୍ରପାଣୟଃ ।
ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରା ରଣେ ହନ୍ୟୁସ୍ତନ୍ମେ କ୍ଷେମତରଂ ଭଵେତ୍ ॥ 45 ॥

Meaning
ୟଦି — even if; ମାମ୍ — me; ଅପ୍ରତୀକାରମ୍ — without being resistant; ଅଶସ୍ତ୍ରମ୍ — without being fully equipped; ଶସ୍ତ୍ର-ପାଣୟଃ — those with weapons in hand; ଧାର୍ତରାଷ୍ଟ୍ରାଃ — the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra; ରଣେ — on the battlefield; ହନ୍ୟୁଃ — may kill; ତତ୍ — that; ମେ — for me; କ୍ଷେମ-ତରମ୍ — better; ଭଵେତ୍ — would be.

Translation
Better for me if the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra, weapons in hand, were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield.

ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସଂଜୟ ଉଵାଚ
ଏଵମୁକ୍ତ୍ଵାର୍ଜୁନଃ ସଂଖ୍ୟେ ରଥୋପସ୍ଥ ଉପାଵିଶତ୍ ।
ଵିସୃଜ୍ୟ ସଶରଂ ଚାପଂ ଶୋକସଂଵିଗ୍ନ‍ମାନସଃ ॥ 46 ॥

Meaning
ସଂଜୟଃ ଉଵାଚ — Sañjaya said; ଏଵମ୍ — thus; ଉକ୍ତ୍ଵା — saying; ଅର୍ଜୁନଃ — Arjuna; ସଂଖ୍ୟେ — in the battlefield; ରଥ — of the chariot; ଉପସ୍ଥେ — on the seat; ଉପାଵିଶତ୍ — sat down again; ଵିସୃଜ୍ୟ — putting aside; ସ-ଶରମ୍ — along with arrows; ଚାପମ୍ — the bow; ଶୋକ — by lamentation; ସଂଵିଗ୍ନ — distressed; ମାନସଃ — within the mind.

Translation
Sañjaya said: Arjuna, having thus spoken on the battlefield, cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
