ହିରଣ୍ୟାକ୍ଷଂ ତାଵଦ୍ଵରଦ ଭଵଦନ୍ଵେଷଣପରଂ
ଚରଂତଂ ସାଂଵର୍ତେ ପୟସି ନିଜଜଂଘାପରିମିତେ ।
ଭଵଦ୍ଭକ୍ତୋ ଗତ୍ଵା କପଟପଟୁଧୀର୍ନାରଦମୁନିଃ
ଶନୈରୂଚେ ନଂଦନ୍ ଦନୁଜମପି ନିଂଦଂସ୍ତଵ ବଲମ୍ ॥1॥
Meaning
ହିରଣ୍ୟାକ୍ଷଂ ତାଵତ୍- - to Hiranyaaksha, then; ଵରଦ - O Bestower of boons!; ଭଵତ୍-ଅଣ୍ଵେଷଣପରମ୍ - who was searching for Thee (and); ଚରଂତଂ ସାଂଵର୍ତେ ପୟସି - who was running around in the waters of deluge; ନିଜ-ଜଂଘା-ପରିମିତେ - which was reaching his thighs; ଭଵତ୍-ଭକ୍ତଃ ଗତ୍ଵା - Thy devotee approaching (Hiranyaaksha); କପଟପଟୁଧୀଃ-ନାରଦମୁନିଃ - Naarada muni who was a diplomatic missionary; ଶନୈଃ-ଊଚେ - calmly spoke (to Hiranyaaksha); ନଂଦନ୍ ଦନୁଜମ୍-ଅପି - pleasing the Asura; ନିଂଦନ୍-ତଵ ବଲମ୍ - and denigrating Thy prowess;
Translation
O Bestower of Boons! Then Thy devotee, the sage Naarada who is skillfully diplomatic in furthering Thy purposes, approached Hiranyaaksha, who was running about searching for Thee, in the cosmic waters which barely reached his knees. Naarada calmly spoke to him, praising him and undermining Thy prowess.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ସ ମାୟାଵୀ ଵିଷ୍ଣୁର୍ହରତି ଭଵଦୀୟାଂ ଵସୁମତୀଂ
ପ୍ରଭୋ କଷ୍ଟଂ କଷ୍ଟଂ କିମିଦମିତି ତେନାଭିଗଦିତଃ ।
ନଦନ୍ କ୍ଵାସୌ କ୍ଵାସଵିତି ସ ମୁନିନା ଦର୍ଶିତପଥୋ
ଭଵଂତଂ ସଂପ୍ରାପଦ୍ଧରଣିଧରମୁଦ୍ୟଂତମୁଦକାତ୍ ॥2॥
Meaning
ସଃ ମାୟାଵୀ ଵିଷ୍ଣୁଃ- - "that deceitful Vishnu; ହରତି ଭଵଦୀୟାଂ ଵସୁମତୀଂ - is stealing away your own earth; ପ୍ରଭୋ - O Mighty One!; କଷ୍ଟଂ କଷ୍ଟଂ କିମ୍-ଇଦମ୍-ଇତି - what a pity, how is it so", thus; ତେନ-ଅଭିଗଦିତଃ - by him (Naarada) was said; ନଦନ୍ କ୍ଵ-ଅସୌ - roaring "Where is he; କ୍ଵ-ଅସୌ-ଇତି - where is he", thus; ସ ମୁନିନା - he (the Asura) by the Muni; ଦର୍ଶିତ-ପଥଃ - was shown the way; ଭଵଂତଂ ସଂପ୍ରାପତ୍- - reached Thee; ଧରଣି-ଧରମ୍- - (Thee who was) holding up the earth; ଉଦ୍ୟଂତମ୍-ଉଦକାତ୍ - coming up from the waters;
Translation
When Naarada told the mighty Hiranyaaksh that the deceitful Vishnu was stealing away his own earth and how was it so , Hiranyaaksha with a roar asked where he was, where he was. Thus, following the direction given by the sage, he reached Thee, as Thou were rising up from the waters with the earth.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଅହୋ ଆରଣ୍ୟୋଽୟଂ ମୃଗ ଇତି ହସଂତଂ ବହୁତରୈ-
ର୍ଦୁରୁକ୍ତୈର୍ଵିଧ୍ୟଂତଂ ଦିତିସୁତମଵଜ୍ଞାୟ ଭଗଵନ୍ ।
ମହୀଂ ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା ଦଂଷ୍ଟ୍ରାଶିରସି ଚକିତାଂ ସ୍ଵେନ ମହସା
ପୟୋଧାଵାଧାୟ ପ୍ରସଭମୁଦୟୁଂକ୍ଥା ମୃଧଵିଧୌ ॥3॥
Meaning
ଅହୋ ଆରଣ୍ୟଃ-ଅୟଂ ମୃଗ - "O this is only a wild animal"; ଇତି ହସଂତଂ - thus ridiculing with; ବହୁତରୈଃ-ଦୁରୁକ୍ତୈଃ-ଵିଧ୍ୟଂତଂ - and many abuses lashing out; ଦିତିସୁତମ୍- - the son of Diti (the Asura); ଅଵଜ୍ଞାୟ ଭଗଵନ୍ - ignoring (Thee) O Lord; ମହୀଂ ଦୃଷ୍ଟ୍ଵା - seeing the earth; ଦଂଷ୍ଟ୍ରାଶିରସି - at the tip of the tusks; ଚକିତାଂ - (the earth) trembling; ସ୍ଵେନ ମହସା - by Thy power; ପୟୋଧୌ-ଆଧାୟ - (then) placing (the earth) in the ocean; ପ୍ରସଭମ୍- - at once; ଉଦୟୁଂକ୍ଥା - (Thou) did prepare; ମୃଧଵିଧୌ - for a fight;
Translation
O Lord! Thou ignored the ridiculing words of the Asura that this is only a wild animal and the many abuses hurled by him. Thou saw the earth trembling in fear at the tip of Thy tusk and so placed her firmly on the ocean by Thy power. Then Thou at once were ready for a fight.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଗଦାପାଣୌ ଦୈତ୍ୟେ ତ୍ଵମପି ହି ଗୃହୀତୋନ୍ନତଗଦୋ
ନିୟୁଦ୍ଧେନ କ୍ରୀଡନ୍ ଘଟଘଟରଵୋଦ୍ଘୁଷ୍ଟଵିୟତା ।
ରଣାଲୋକୌତ୍ସୁକ୍ୟାନ୍ମିଲତି ସୁରସଂଘେ ଦ୍ରୁତମମୁଂ
ନିରୁଂଧ୍ୟାଃ ସଂଧ୍ୟାତଃ ପ୍ରଥମମିତି ଧାତ୍ରା ଜଗଦିଷେ ॥4॥
Meaning
ଗଦାପାଣୌ ଦୈତ୍ୟେ - the Asura armed with a mace; ତ୍ଵମ୍-ଅପି ହି - Thou also indeed; ଗୃହୀତ-ଉନଂତ-ଗଦଃ - flourishing a mighty mace; ନିୟୁଦ୍ଧେନ କ୍ରୀଡନ୍ - by a dual (fight) as though sporting (the clashing of maces); ଘଟ-ଘଟ-ରଵ-ଉଦ୍ଘୁଷ୍ଟ-ଵିୟତା - resounding the sky with fierce sound; ରଣ-ଆଲୋକ-ଔତ୍ସୁକ୍ୟାତ୍- - with the eagerness to see the fight; ମିଲତି ସୁରସଂଘେ - when the hosts of gods assembled; ଦ୍ରୁତମ୍-ଅମୁଂ ନିରୁଂଧ୍ୟାଃ - quickly kill this (Asura); ସଂଧ୍ୟାତଃ ପ୍ରଥମମ୍- - before evening; ଇତି ଧାତ୍ରା ଜଗଦିଷେ - thus Thou were requested by Brahmaa;
Translation
As the Asura was armed with a mace, Thou too flourished a mighty mace and sportingly gave him battle. As the clang of the clashing maces resounded in the sky, the hosts of gods assembled eagerly to see the dual. Brahmaa cried out requesting Thee to kill the Asura before nightfall.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଗଦୋନ୍ମର୍ଦେ ତସ୍ମିଂସ୍ତଵ ଖଲୁ ଗଦାୟାଂ ଦିତିଭୁଵୋ
ଗଦାଘାତାଦ୍ଭୂମୌ ଝଟିତି ପତିତାୟାମହହ! ଭୋଃ ।
ମୃଦୁସ୍ମେରାସ୍ୟସ୍ତ୍ଵଂ ଦନୁଜକୁଲନିର୍ମୂଲନଚଣଂ
ମହାଚକ୍ରଂ ସ୍ମୃତ୍ଵା କରଭୁଵି ଦଧାନୋ ରୁରୁଚିଷେ ॥5॥
Meaning
ଗଦୋନ୍ମର୍ଦେ ତସ୍ମିନ୍- - in that fight with the maces; ତଵ ଖଲୁ ଗଦାୟାଂ - (when) Thy mace indeed; ଦିତିଭୁଵଃ - (and) of the Asura's; ଗଦା-ଘାତାତ୍- - by a blow of the mace; ଭୂମୌ ଝଟିତି ପତିତାୟାମ୍- - on the ground suddenly fell; ଅହହ ଭୋଃ - what a wonder O Lord!; ମୃଦୁସ୍ମେର-ଆସ୍ୟଃ-ତ୍ଵମ୍ - with a gentle smile on Thy face, Thou; ଦନୁଜକୁଲ-ନିର୍ମୂଲଚଣମ୍ - famous as the destroyer of the entire Asura race; ମହାଚକ୍ରଂ ସ୍ମୃତ୍ଵା - (that) great discus invoking (Sudarshana); କରଭୁଵି ଦଧାନୋ - in the palms of Thy hands holding; ରୁରୁଚିଷେ - looked magnificent;
Translation
During that combat, the Asura's stroke suddenly knocked down Thy mace to the ground. With a smile on Thy face Thou invoked Thy discus (Sudarshana) which is well known for slaying of the race of the Asuras. Thou looked magnificent as the invoked discus placed itself in Thy hands.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ତତଃ ଶୂଲଂ କାଲପ୍ରତିମରୁଷି ଦୈତ୍ୟେ ଵିସୃଜତି
ତ୍ଵୟି ଛିଂଦତ୍ୟେନତ୍ କରକଲିତଚକ୍ରପ୍ରହରଣାତ୍ ।
ସମାରୁଷ୍ଟୋ ମୁଷ୍ଟ୍ୟା ସ ଖଲୁ ଵିତୁଦଂସ୍ତ୍ଵାଂ ସମତନୋତ୍
ଗଲନ୍ମାୟେ ମାୟାସ୍ତ୍ଵୟି କିଲ ଜଗନ୍ମୋହନକରୀଃ ॥6॥
Meaning
ତତଃ ଶୂଲମ୍ - then, a trident; କାଲପ୍ରତିମ୍-ଅରୁଷି ଦୈତ୍ୟେ - angry like Rudra the Destroyer, when the Asura; ଵିସୃଜତି - threw (the trident); ତ୍ଵୟି ଛିଂଦତି- - Thou broke; ଏନତ୍ - this (trident); କର-କଲିତ-ଚକ୍ର-ପ୍ରହରଣାତ୍ - by the blow of the discus held in Thy hand; ସମାରୁଷ୍ଟଃ - greatly enraged; ମୁଷ୍ଟ୍ୟା ସ ଖଲୁ - with (his) fist he indeed; ଵିତୁଦନ୍-ତ୍ଵାମ୍ - hitting Thee; ସମତନୋତ୍ ଗଲନ୍ମାୟେ - did employ against Thee, who are beyond, the effects of Maya; ମାୟାଃ ତ୍ଵୟି କିଲ - Maaya on Thee indeed; ଜଗତ୍-ମୋହନକରୀଃ - (Maya) whose tricks can deceive the whole world;
Translation
The Asura who was angry as the Destroyer Rudra, threw his trident at Thee, and Thou broke it with the discus in Thy hands.Greatly enraged he hit Thee with his fist and also employed tricks of Maya against Thee,which may deceive the whole world but does not effect Thee who are above all Maya.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ଭଵଚ୍ଚକ୍ରଜ୍ୟୋତିଷ୍କଣଲଵନିପାତେନ ଵିଧୁତେ
ତତୋ ମାୟାଚକ୍ରେ ଵିତତଘନରୋଷାଂଧମନସମ୍ ।
ଗରିଷ୍ଠାଭିର୍ମୁଷ୍ଟିପ୍ରହୃତିଭିରଭିଘ୍ନଂତମସୁରଂ
ସ୍ଵପାଦାଂଗୁଷ୍ଠେନ ଶ୍ରଵଣପଦମୂଲେ ନିରଵଧୀଃ ॥7॥
Meaning
ଭଵତ୍-ଚକ୍ର-ଜ୍ୟୋତିଷ୍-କଣ-ଲଵ-ନିପାତେନ - being hit by a powerful spark of Thy divine discus; ଵିଧୁତେ - were destroyed; ତତଃ ମାୟା-ଚକ୍ରେ - then (when) the illusion created by the Asura; ଵିତତ-ଘନ-ରୋଷ-ଅଂଧ-ମନସମ୍ - whose mind was blinded by intense rage; ଗରିଷ୍ଠାଭିଃ-ମୁଷ୍ଟି-ପ୍ରହୃତିଭିଃ- - with strong blows of his fist; ଅଭିଘ୍ନଂତମ୍-ଅସୁରମ୍ - the Asura who was hitting Thee; ସ୍ଵ-ପାଦ-ଅଙୁଗୁଷ୍ଠେନ - with Thy big toe; ଶ୍ରଵଣ-ପଦ-ମୂଲେ - at the base of (his) ear; ନିରଵଧୀଃ - Thou did strike;
Translation
When the illusions created by the Asura were all dispersed being hit by a powerful spark of Thy divine discus, the Asura's mind was overcome by intense rage. He then attacked Thee with strong blows of his heavy fists, whereupon Thou struck him with a powerful blow with Thy big toe at the base of his ear.
ଶ୍ଲୋକଃ
ମହାକାୟଃ ସୋଽୟଂ ତଵ ଚରଣପାତପ୍ରମଥିତୋ
ଗଲଦ୍ରକ୍ତୋ ଵକ୍ତ୍ରାଦପତଦୃଷିଭିଃ ଶ୍ଲାଘିତହତିଃ ।
ତଦା ତ୍ଵାମୁଦ୍ଦାମପ୍ରମଦଭରଵିଦ୍ୟୋତିହୃଦୟା
ମୁନୀଂଦ୍ରାଃ ସାଂଦ୍ରାଭିଃ ସ୍ତୁତିଭିରନୁଵନ୍ନଧ୍ଵରତନୁମ୍ ॥8॥
Meaning
ମହାକାୟଃ ସଃ-ଅୟମ୍ - that Asura of gigantic proportions; ତଵ ଚରଣ-ପାତ-ପ୍ରମଥିତଃ - by the blow of Thy foot crushed; ଗଲତ୍-ରକ୍ତଃ ଵକ୍ତ୍ରାତ୍- - with blood flowing out of his mouth; ଅପତତ୍- - fell; ଋଷିଭିଃ ଶ୍ଲାଘିତ-ହତିଃ - the sages praised his slaying; ତଦା ତ୍ଵାମ୍- - then to Thee; ଉଦ୍ଦାମ-ପ୍ରମଦଭର-ଵିଦ୍ୟୋତି-ହୃଦୟା - with their hearts full and brimming with joy; ମୁନୀଂଦ୍ରାଃ - the great sages; ସାଂଦ୍ରାଭିଃ ସ୍ତୁତିଭିଃ- - with verses full of deep meaning; ଅନୁଵନ୍- - praised; ଅଧ୍ଵର-ତନୁମ୍ - O Thou! The Embodiment of Yajna;
Translation
That gigantic Asura crushed by the powerful blow of Thy foot, fell down with blood flowing out of his mouth. The sages praised his slaying. O Thou! Who are the embodiment of Yajna! As they did so their hearts were full and brimming with joy. They sang hymns with deep meaning.

ତ୍ଵଚି ଛଂଦୋ ରୋମସ୍ଵପି କୁଶଗଣଶ୍ଚକ୍ଷୁଷି ଘୃତଂ
ଚତୁର୍ହୋତାରୋଽଂଘ୍ରୌ ସ୍ରୁଗପି ଵଦନେ ଚୋଦର ଇଡା ।
ଗ୍ରହା ଜିହ୍ଵାୟାଂ ତେ ପରପୁରୁଷ କର୍ଣେ ଚ ଚମସା
ଵିଭୋ ସୋମୋ ଵୀର୍ୟଂ ଵରଦ ଗଲଦେଶେଽପ୍ୟୁପସଦଃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ତ୍ଵଚି ଛଂଦଃ - in Thy skin are the Vedic Metres; ରୋମସୁ-ଅପି କୁଶଗଣଃ- - Thy hair are the Kush grass; ଚକ୍ଷୁଷି ଘୃତମ୍ - Thy eyes are ghee; ଚତୁର୍ହୋତାରଃ-ଅଂଘ୍ରୌ - Thy feet are the four sacrificing priests; ସ୍ରୁଗ୍-ଅପି ଵଦନେ - Thy face is 'sruk' (the ladle used for offering); ଚ-ଉଦର ଇଡା - and Thy stomach the 'ida' (the vessel used for keeping the ingredients for offering); ଗ୍ରହା ଜିହ୍ଵାୟାଂ ତେ - Thy tongue the soma pot; ପରପୁରୁଷ - O Infinite Lord!; କର୍ଣେ ଚ ଚମସା - Thy ears are the chamasas (vessel used for keeping the sacrificial remnants); ଵିଭୋ - O Lord!; ସୋମୋ ଵୀର୍ୟମ୍ - Thy virility is Soma; ଵରଦ - O Bestower of Boons!; ଗଲଦେଶେ-ଅପି-ଉପସଦଃ - in Thy neck are the sacrifices called 'Upasat' (the subsidiary rites);
Translation
O Infinite Lord! In Thy skin are the Vedic Mantras, Thy hair are the 'kush' grass, Thy eyes are the ghee, Thy feet are the four sacrificing priests, Thy face is 'sruk',( the ladle for sacrifice) and Thy stomach is the 'Ida' (the vessel which holds the sacrificial ingredients), Thy tongue is the soma pot. O Lord! Thy ears are the chamasas (the vessel which holds the sacrificial remnants) and Thy virility is soma. O Bestower of Boons! in Thy neck are the sacrifices called Upasat, (the subsidiary rites). Thou are the embodiment of the holy Yagna.

Meaning
ମୁନୀଂଦ୍ରୈଃ-ଇତ୍ୟାଦି- - by the various great sages; ସ୍ତଵନ-ମୁଖରୈଃ-ମୋଦିତ-ମନା - who were intoning such hymns,; ମୋଦିତ-ମନା - being delighted; ମହୀୟସ୍ୟା ମୂର୍ତ୍ୟା - with a splendid form and; ଵିମଲତର-କୀର୍ତ୍ୟା ଚ - with unblemished glory; ଵିଲସନ୍ - shining; ସ୍ଵଧିଷ୍ଣ୍ୟଂ ସଂପ୍ରାପ୍ତଃ - reaching Thy abode of Vaikunth; ସୁଖ-ରସ-ଵିହାରୀ - O Thee! Reveling in Thy own Bliss!; ମଧୁରିପୋ - O Destroyer of Madhu!; ନିରୁଂଧ୍ୟା ରୋଗଂ ମେ - destroy ailments of mine; ସକଲମ୍-ଅପି - all of them; ଵାତାଲୟପତେ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! O Destroyer of Madhu! Delighted with the hymns of the sages Thou shone with Thy huge and adorable form and taintless glory and retired to Thy abode of Vaikunth, revelling in Thy innate Bliss. May Thou be pleased to eradicate all my ailments.
