මදනුග්රහාය පරමං ගුහ්යමධ්යාත්මසංජ්ඤිතම් ।
යත්ත්වයෝක්තං වචස්තේන මෝහෝऽයං විගතෝ මම ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning

Translation
Arjuna said: By my hearing the instructions You have kindly given me about these most confidential spiritual subjects, my illusion has now been dispelled.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භවාප්යයෞ හි භූතානාං ශ්රුතෞ විස්තරශෝ මයා ।
ත්වත්තඃ කමලපත්රාක්ෂ මාහාත්ම්යමපි චාව්යයම් ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning

Translation
O lotus-eyed one, I have heard from You in detail about the appearance and disappearance of every living entity and have realized Your inexhaustible glories.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ඒවමේතද්යථාත්ථ ත්වමාත්මානං පරමේශ්වර ।
ද්රෂ්ටුමිච්ඡාමි තේ රූපමෛශ්වරං පුරුෂෝත්තම ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning
ඒවම් — thus; ඒතත් — this; යථා — as it is; ආත්ථ — have spoken; ත්වම් — You; ආත්මානම් — Yourself; පරම-ඊශ්වර — O Supreme Lord; ද්රෂ්ටුම් — to see; ඉච්චාමි — I wish; තේ — Your; රූපම් — form; ඓශ්වරම් — divine; පුරුෂ-උත්තම — O best of personalities.
Translation
O greatest of all personalities, O supreme form, though I see You here before me in Your actual position, as You have described Yourself, I wish to see how You have entered into this cosmic manifestation. I want to see that form of Yours.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
මන්යසේ යදි තච්ඡක්යං මයා ද්රෂ්ටුමිති ප්රභෝ ।
යෝගේශ්වර තතෝ මේ ත්වං දර්ශයාත්මානමව්යයම් ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning

Translation
If You think that I am able to behold Your cosmic form, O my Lord, O master of all mystic power, then kindly show me that unlimited universal Self.

පශ්ය මේ පාර්ථ රූපාණි ශතශෝऽථ සහස්රශඃ ।

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, O son of Prithā, see now My opulences, hundreds of thousands of varied divine and multicolored forms.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
පශ්යාදිත්යාන්වසූන්‍රුද්රානශ්විනෞ මරුතස්තථා ।
බහූන්යදෘෂ්ටපූර්වාණි පශ්යාශ්චර්යාණි භාරත ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
පශ්ය — see; ආදිත්යාන් — the twelve sons of Aditi; වසූන් — the eight Vasus; රුද්රාන් — the eleven forms of Rudra; අශ්විනෞ — the two Aśvinīs; මරුතඃ — the forty-nine Maruts (demigods of the wind); තථා — also; බහූනි — many; අදෘෂ්ට — that you have not seen; පූර්වාණි — before; පශ්ය — see; ආශ්චර්යාණි — all the wonders; භාරත — O best of the Bhāratas.
Translation
O best of the Bhāratas, see here the different manifestations of Ādityas, Vasus, Rudras, Aśvinī-kumāras and all the other demigods. Behold the many wonderful things which no one has ever seen or heard of before.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ඉහෛකස්ථං ජගත්කෘත්ස්නං පශ්යාද්ය සචරාචරම් ।
මම දේහේ ගුඩාකේශ යච්ච‍ආන්යද්‍ද්රෂ්ටුමිච්ඡසි ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
ඉහ — in this; ඒක-ස්ථම් — in one place; ජගත් — the universe; කෘත්ස්නම් — completely; පශ්ය — see; අද්ය — immediately; ස — with; චර — the moving; අචරම් — and not moving; මම — My; දේහේ — in this body; ගුඩාකේශ — O Arjuna; යත් — that which; ච — also; අන්යත් — other; ද්රෂ්ටුම් — to see; ඉච්චසි — you wish.
Translation
O Arjuna, whatever you wish to see, behold at once in this body of Mine! This universal form can show you whatever you now desire to see and whatever you may want to see in the future. Everything – moving and nonmoving – is here completely, in one place.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
න තු මාං ශක්යසේ ද්රෂ්ටුමනේනෛව ස්වචක්ෂුෂා ।
දිව්යං දදාමි තේ චක්ෂුඃ පශ්ය මේ යෝගමෛශ්වරම් ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning

Translation
But you cannot see Me with your present eyes. Therefore I give you divine eyes. Behold My mystic opulence!

ඒවමුක්ත්වා තතෝ රාජන්මහායෝගේශ්වරෝ හරිඃ ।
දර්ශයාමාස පාර්ථාය පරමං රූපමෛශ්වරම් ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
සංජයඃ උවාච — Sañjaya said; ඒවම් — thus; උක්ත්වා — saying; තතඃ — thereafter; රාජන් — O King; මහා-යෝග-ඊශ්වරඃ — the most powerful mystic; හරිඃ — the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa; දර්ශයාං ආස — showed; පාර්ථාය — unto Arjuna; පරමම් — the divine; රූපං ඓශ්වරම් — universal form.
Translation
Sañjaya said: O King, having spoken thus, the Supreme Lord of all mystic power, the Personality of Godhead, displayed His universal form to Arjuna.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අනේකවක්‍ත්රනයනමනේකාද්භ‍උතදර්ශනම් ।
අනේකදිව්යාභරණං දිව්යානේකෝද්යතායුධම් ॥ 10 ॥
දිව්යමාල්යාංබරධරං දිව්යගංධානුලේපනම් ।
සර්වාශ්චර්යමයං දේවමනංතං විශ්වතෝමුඛම් ॥ 11 ॥

Translation
Arjuna saw in that universal form unlimited mouths, unlimited eyes, unlimited wonderful visions. The form was decorated with many celestial ornaments and bore many divine upraised weapons. He wore celestial garlands and garments, and many divine scents were smeared over His body. All was wondrous, brilliant, unlimited, all-expanding.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
දිවි සූර්යසහස්රස්ය භවේද්යුගපදුත්ථිතා ।
යදි භාඃ සදෘශී සා ස්යාද්භ‍ආසස්තස්ය මහාත්මනඃ ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
දිවි — in the sky; සූර්ය — of suns; සහස්රස්ය — of many thousands; භවේත් — there were; යුගපත් — simultaneously; උත්ථිතා — present; යදි — if; භාඃ — light; සදෘශී — like that; සා — that; ස්යාත් — might be; භාසඃ — effulgence; තස්ය — of Him; මහා-ආත්මනඃ — the great Lord.
Translation
If hundreds of thousands of suns were to rise at once into the sky, their radiance might resemble the effulgence of the Supreme Person in that universal form.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තත්රෛකස්ථං ජගත්කෘත්ස්නං ප්රවිභක්තමනේකධා ।
අපශ්යද්දේවදේවස්ය ශරීරේ පාංඩවස්තදා ॥ 13 ॥
Meaning
තත්ර — there; ඒක-ස්ථම් — in one place; ජගත් — the universe; කෘත්ස්නම් — complete; ප්රවිභක්තම් — divided; අනේකධා — into many; අපශ්යත් — could see; දේව-දේවස්ය — of the Supreme Personality of Godhead; ශරීරේ — in the universal form; පාංඩවඃ — Arjuna; තදා — at that time.
Translation
At that time Arjuna could see in the universal form of the Lord the unlimited expansions of the universe situated in one place although divided into many, many thousands.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තතඃ ස විස්මයාවිෂ්ටෝ හෘෂ්ටරෝමා ධනංජයඃ ।
ප්රණම්ය ශිරසා දේවං කෘතාංජලිරභාෂත ॥ 14 ॥
Meaning
තතඃ — thereafter; සඃ — he; විස්මය-ආවිෂ්ටඃ — being overwhelmed with wonder; හෘෂ්ට-රෝමා — with his bodily hairs standing on end due to his great ecstasy; ධනම්-ජයඃ — Arjuna; ප්රණම්ය — offering obeisances; ශිරසා — with the head; දේවම් — to the Supreme Personality of Godhead; කෘත-අංජලිඃ — with folded hands; අභාෂත — began to speak.
Translation
Then, bewildered and astonished, his hair standing on end, Arjuna bowed his head to offer obeisances and with folded hands began to pray to the Supreme Lord.

පශ්යාමි දේවාංස්තව දේව දේහේ
සර්වාංස්තථා භූතවිශේෂසංඝාන් ।
බ්රහ්මාණමීශං කමලාසනස්ථ-
මෘෂීංශ්ච සර්වානුරගාංශ්ච දිව්යාන් ॥ 15 ॥

Translation
Arjuna said: My dear Lord Kriṣṇa, I see assembled in Your body all the demigods and various other living entities. I see Brahmā sitting on the lotus flower, as well as Lord Śiva and all the sages and divine serpents.

අනේකබාහූදරවක්‍ත්රනේත්රං
පශ්යාමි ත්වාං සර්වතෝऽනංතරූපම් ।
නාංතං න මධ්යං න පුනස්තවාදිං
පශ්යාමි විශ්වේශ්වර විශ්වරූප ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
අනේක — many; බාහු — arms; උදර — bellies; වක්ත්ර — mouths; නේත්රම් — eyes; පශ්යාමි — I see; ත්වාම් — You; සර්වතඃ — on all sides; අනංත-රූපම් — unlimited form; න අංතම් — no end; න මධ්යම් — no middle; න පුනඃ — nor again; තව — Your; ආදිම් — beginning; පශ්යාමි — I see; විශ්ව-ඊශ්වර — O Lord of the universe; විශ්ව-රූප — in the form of the universe.
Translation
O Lord of the universe, O universal form, I see in Your body many, many arms, bellies, mouths and eyes, expanded everywhere, without limit. I see in You no end, no middle and no beginning.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
කිරීටිනං ගදිනං චක්රිණං ච
තේජෝරාශිං සර්වතෝ දීප්‍තිමංතම් ।
පශ්යාමි ත්වාං දුර්නිරීක්ෂ්යං සමංතා-
ද්දීප්‍තානලාර්කද්යුතිමප්රමේයම් ॥ 17 ॥
Meaning
කිරීටිනම් — with helmets; ගදිනම් — with maces; චක්රිණම් — with discs; ච — and; තේජඃ-රාශිම් — effulgence; සර්වතඃ — on all sides; දීප්ති-මංතම් — glowing; පශ්යාමි — I see; ත්වාම් — You; දුර්නිරීක්ෂ්යම් — difficult to see; සමංතාත් — everywhere; දීප්ත-අනල — blazing fire; අර්ක — of the sun; ද්යුතිම් — the sunshine; අප්රමේයම් — immeasurable.
Translation
Your form is difficult to see because of its glaring effulgence, spreading on all sides, like blazing fire or the immeasurable radiance of the sun. Yet I see this glowing form everywhere, adorned with various crowns, clubs and discs.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ත්වමක්ෂරං පරමං වේදිතව්යං
ත්වමස්ය විශ්වස්ය පරං නිධානම් ।
ත්වමව්යයඃ ශාශ්වතධර්මගෝප්‍තා
සනාතනස්ත්වං පුරුෂෝ මතෝ මේ ॥ 18 ॥
Meaning
ත්වම් — You; අක්ෂරම් — the infallible; පරමම් — supreme; වේදිතව්යම් — to be understood; ත්වම් — You; අස්ය — of this; විශ්වස්ය — universe; පරම් — supreme; නිධානම් — basis; ත්වම් — You; අව්යයඃ — inexhaustible; ශාශ්වත-ධර්ම-ගෝප්තා — maintainer of the eternal religion; සනාතනඃ — eternal; ත්වම් — You; පුරුෂඃ — the Supreme Personality; මතඃ මේ — this is my opinion.
Translation
You are the supreme primal objective. You are the ultimate resting place of all this universe. You are inexhaustible, and You are the oldest. You are the maintainer of the eternal religion, the Personality of Godhead. This is my opinion.

අනාදිමධ්යාංතමනංතවීර්ය-
මනංතබාහුං ශශිසූර්යනේත්රම් ।
පශ්යාමි ත්වාං දීප්‍තහුතාශවක්‍ත්රං
ස්වතේජසා විශ්වමිදං තපංතම් ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning
අනාදි — without beginning; මධ්ය — middle; අංතම් — or end; අනංත — unlimited; වීර්යම් — glories; අනංත — unlimited; බාහුම් — arms; ශශි — the moon; සූර්ය — and sun; නේත්රම් — eyes; පශ්යාමි — I see; ත්වාම් — You; දීප්ත — blazing; හුතාශ-වක්ත්රම් — fire coming out of Your mouth; ස්ව-තේජසා — by Your radiance; විශ්වම් — universe; ඉදම් — this; තපංතම් — heating.
Translation
You are without origin, middle or end. Your glory is unlimited. You have numberless arms, and the sun and moon are Your eyes. I see You with blazing fire coming forth from Your mouth, burning this entire universe by Your own radiance.

ද්යාවාපෘථිව්යෝරිදමංතරං හි
ව්යාප්‍තං ත්වයෛකේන දිශශ්ච සර්වාඃ ।
දෘෂ්ට්වාද්‍භුතං රූපමුග්රං තවේදං
ලෝකත්රයං ප්රව්යථිතං මහාත්මන් ॥ 20 ॥
Meaning
ද්යෞ — from outer space; ආ-පෘථිව්යෝඃ — to the earth; ඉදම් — this; අංතරම් — between; හි — certainly; ව්යාප්තම් — pervaded; ත්වයා — by You; ඒකේන — alone; දිශඃ — directions; ච — and; සර්වාඃ — all; දෘෂ්ට්වා — by seeing; අද්භුතම් — wonderful; රූපම් — form; උග්රම් — terrible; තව — Your; ඉදම් — this; ලෝක — the planetary systems; ත්රයම් — three; ප්රව්යථිතම් — perturbed; මහා-ආත්මන් — O great one.
Translation
Although You are one, You spread throughout the sky and the planets and all space between. O great one, seeing this wondrous and terrible form, all the planetary systems are perturbed.

අමී හි ත්වාං සුරසංඝා විශංති
කේචිද්භ‍ඊතාඃ ප්රාංජලයෝ ගෘණංති ।
ස්වස්තීත්යුක්ත්වා මහර්ෂිසිද්ධසංඝාඃ
ස්තුවංති ත්වාං ස්තුතිභිඃ පුෂ්කලාභිඃ ॥ 21 ॥
Meaning
අමී — all those; හි — certainly; ත්වාම් — You; සුර-සංඝාඃ — groups of demigods; විශංති — are entering; කේචිත් — some of them; භීතාඃ — out of fear; ප්රාංජලයඃ — with folded hands; ගෘණංති — are offering prayers; ස්වස්ති — all peace; ඉති — thus; උක්ත්වා — speaking; මහා-ඍෂි — great sages; සිද්ධ-සංඝාඃ — perfect beings; ස්තුවංති — are singing hymns; ත්වාම් — unto You; ස්තුතිභිඃ — with prayers; පුෂ්කලාභිඃ — Vedic hymns.
Translation
All the hosts of demigods are surrendering before You and entering into You. Some of them, very much afraid, are offering prayers with folded hands. Hosts of great sages and perfected beings, crying “All peace!” are praying to You by singing the Vedic hymns.

රුද්රාදිත්යා වසවෝ යේ ච සාධ්යා
විශ්වේऽශ්විනෞ මරුතශ්චෝෂ්මපාශ්ච ।

Translation
All the various manifestations of Lord Śiva, the Ādityas, the Vasus, the Sādhyas, the Viśvedevas, the two Aśvīs, the Maruts, the forefathers, the Gandharvas, the Yakṣas, the Asuras and the perfected demigods are beholding You in wonder.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
රූපං මහත්තේ බහුවක්‍ත්රනේත්රං
මහාබාහෝ බහුබාහූරුපාදම් ।
බහූදරං බහුදංෂ්ට්රාකරාලං
දෘෂ්ට්වා ලෝකාඃ ප්රව්යථිතාස්තථාහම් ॥ 23 ॥

රූපම් — the form; මහත් — very great; තේ — of You; බහු — many; වක්ත්ර — faces; නේත්රම් — and eyes; මහා-බාහෝ — O mighty-armed one; බහු — many; බාහු — arms; ඌරු — thighs; පාදම් — and legs; බහු-උදරම් — many bellies; බහු-දංෂ්ට්රා — many teeth; කරාලම් — horrible; දෘෂ්ට්වා — seeing; ලෝකාඃ — all the planets; ප්රව්යථිතාඃ — perturbed; තථා — similarly; අහම් — I.
Translation
O mighty-armed one, all the planets with their demigods are disturbed at seeing Your great form, with its many faces, eyes, arms, thighs, legs and bellies and Your many terrible teeth; and as they are disturbed, so am I.

නභඃස්පෘශං දීප්‍තමනේකවර්ණං
ව්යාත්තානනං දීප්‍තවිශාලනේත්රම් ।
දෘෂ්ට්වා හි ත්වාං ප්රව්යථිතාංතරාත්මා
ධෘතිං න විංදාමි ශමං ච විෂ්ණෝ ॥ 24 ॥

නභඃ-ස්පෘශම් — touching the sky; දීප්තම් — glowing; අනේක — many; වර්ණම් — colors; ව්යාත්ත — open; ආනනම් — mouths; දීප්ත — glowing; විශාල — very great; නේත්රම් — eyes; දෘෂ්ට්වා — seeing; හි — certainly; ත්වාම් — You; ප්රව්යථිත — perturbed; අංතඃ — within; ආත්මා — soul; ධෘතිම් — steadiness; න — not; විංදාමි — I have; ශමම් — mental tranquillity; ච — also; විෂ්ණෝ — O Lord Viṣṇu.
Translation
O all-pervading Viṣṇu, seeing You with Your many radiant colors touching the sky, Your gaping mouths, and Your great glowing eyes, my mind is perturbed by fear. I can no longer maintain my steadiness or equilibrium of mind.

දංෂ්ට්රාකරාලානි ච තේ මුඛානි
දෘෂ්ට්වෛව කාලානලසන්නිභානි ।
දිශෝ න ජානේ න ලභේ ච ශර්ම
ප්රසීද දේවේශ ජගන්නිවාස ॥ 25 ॥
Meaning
දංෂ්ට්රා — teeth; කරාලානි — terrible; ච — also; තේ — Your; මුඛානි — faces; දෘෂ්ට්වා — seeing; ඒව — thus; කාල-අනල — the fire of death; සන්නිභානි — as if; දිශඃ — the directions; න — not; ජානේ — I know; න — not; ලභේ — I obtain; ච — and; ශර්ම — grace; ප්රසීද — be pleased; දේව-ඊශ — O Lord of all lords; ජගත්-නිවාස — O refuge of the worlds.
Translation
O Lord of lords, O refuge of the worlds, please be gracious to me. I cannot keep my balance seeing thus Your blazing deathlike faces and awful teeth. In all directions I am bewildered.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අමී ච ත්වාං ධෘතරාෂ්ට්රස්ය පුත්රාඃ
සර්වේ සහෛවාවනිපාලසංඝෛඃ ।
භීෂ්මෝ ද්රෝණඃ සූතපුත්රස්තථාසෞ
සහාස්මදීයෛරපි යෝධමුඛ්යෛඃ ॥ 26 ॥

Translation
All the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra, along with their allied kings, and Bhīṣma, Droṇa, Karṇa – and our chief soldiers also – are rushing into Your fearful mouths. And some I see trapped with heads smashed between Your teeth.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
යථා නදීනාං බහවෝऽංබුවේගාඃ
සමුද්රමේවාභිමුඛා ද්රවංති ।
තථා තවාමී නරලෝකවීරා
විශංති වක්‍ත්රාණ්යභිවිජ්‍වලංති ॥ 28 ॥
Meaning
යථා — as; නදීනාම් — of the rivers; බහවඃ — the many; අංබු-වේගාඃ — waves of the waters; සමුද්රම් — the ocean; ඒව — certainly; අභිමුඛාඃ — towards; ද්රවංති — glide; තථා — similarly; තව — Your; අමී — all these; නර-ලෝක-වීරාඃ — kings of human society; විශංති — are entering; වක්ත්රාණි — the mouths; අභිවිජ්වලංති — and are blazing.
Translation
As the many waves of the rivers flow into the ocean, so do all these great warriors enter blazing into Your mouths.

යථා ප්රදීප්‍තං ජ්‍වලනං පතංගා
විශංති නාශාය සමෘද්ධවේගාඃ ।
තථෛව නාශාය විශංති ලෝකා-
ස්තවාපි වක්ත්රාණි සමෘද්ධවේගාඃ ॥ 29 ॥

Translation
I see all people rushing full speed into Your mouths, as moths dash to destruction in a blazing fire.

ලේලිහ්යසේ ග්රසමානඃ සමංතා-
ල්ලෝකාන්සමග්රාන්වදනෛජ්‍‍ර්වලද්භ‍ඉඃ ।
තේජෝභිරාපූර්ය ජගත්සමග්රං
භාසස්තවෝග්රාඃ ප්රතපංති විෂ්ණෝ ॥ 30 ॥

ලේලිහ්යසේ — You are licking; ග්රසමානඃ — devouring; සමංතාත් — from all directions; ලෝකාන් — people; සමග්රාන් — all; වදනෛඃ — by the mouths; ජ්වලද්භිඃ — blazing; තේජෝභිඃ — by effulgence; ආපූර්ය — covering; ජගත් — the universe; සමග්රම් — all; භාසඃ — rays; තව — Your; උග්රාඃ — terrible; ප්රතපංති — are scorching; විෂ්ණෝ — O all-pervading Lord.
Translation
O Viṣṇu, I see You devouring all people from all sides with Your flaming mouths. Covering all the universe with Your effulgence, You are manifest with terrible, scorching rays.

ආඛ්යාහි මේ කෝ භවානුග්රරූපෝ
නමෝऽස්තු තේ දේවවර ප්රසීද ।
විජ්ඤාතුමිච්ඡාමි භවංතමාද්යං
න හි ප්රජානාමි තව ප්රවෘත්තිම් ॥ 31 ॥
Meaning
ආඛ්යාහි — please explain; මේ — unto me; කඃ — who; භවාන් — You; උග්ර-රූපඃ — fierce form; නමඃ අස්තු — obeisances; තේ — unto You; දේව-වර — O great one amongst the demigods; ප්රසීද — be gracious; විජ්ඤාතුම් — to know; ඉච්චාමි — I wish; භවංතම් — You; ආද්යම් — the original; න — not; හි — certainly; ප්රජානාමි — do I know; තව — Your; ප්රවෘත්තිම් — mission.
Translation
O Lord of lords, so fierce of form, please tell me who You are. I offer my obeisances unto You; please be gracious to me. You are the primal Lord. I want to know about You, for I do not know what Your mission is.

කාලෝऽස්මි ලෝකක්ෂයකෘත්ප්රවෘද්ධෝ

ශ්රී-භගවාන් උවාච — the Personality of Godhead said; කාලඃ — time; අස්මි — I am; ලෝක — of the worlds; ක්ෂය-කෘත් — the destroyer; ප්රවෘද්ධඃ — great; ලෝකාන් — all people; සමාහර්තුම් — in destroying; ඉහ — in this world; ප්රවෘත්තඃ — engaged; ඍතේ — without, except for; අපි — even; ත්වාම් — you; න — never; භවිෂ්යංති — will be; සර්වේ — all; යේ — who; අවස්ථිතාඃ — situated; ප්රති-අනීකේෂු — on the opposite sides; යෝධාඃ — the soldiers.
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Time I am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and I have come here to destroy all people. With the exception of you [the Pāṇḍavas], all the soldiers here on both sides will be slain.

තස්මාත්ත්වමුත්තිෂ්ඨ යශෝ ලභස්ව
ජිත්වා ශත්රූන්භුංක්ෂ්ව රාජ්යං සමෘද්ධම් ।
මයෛවෛතේ නිහතාඃ පූර්වමේව
නිමිත්තමාත්රං භව සව්යසාචින් ॥ 33 ॥
Meaning
තස්මාත් — therefore; ත්වම් — you; උත්තිෂ්ඨ — get up; යශඃ — fame; ලභස්ව — gain; ජිත්වා — conquering; ශත්රූන් — enemies; භුංක්ෂ්ව — enjoy; රාජ්යම් — kingdom; සමෘද්ධම් — flourishing; මයා — by Me; ඒව — certainly; ඒතේ — all these; නිහතාඃ — killed; පූර්වං ඒව — by previous arrangement; නිමිත්ත-මාත්රම් — just the cause; භව — become; සව්ය-සාචින් — O Savyasācī.
Translation
Therefore get up. Prepare to fight and win glory. Conquer your enemies and enjoy a flourishing kingdom. They are already put to death by My arrangement, and you, O Savyasācī, can be but an instrument in the fight.

ද්රෝණං ච භීෂ්මං ච ජයද්රථං ච
කර්ණං තථාන්යානපි යෝධවීරාන් ।
මයා හතාංස්ත්වං ජහි මා ව්යථිෂ්ඨා
යුධ්යස්ව ජේතාසි රණේ සපත්නාන් ॥ 34 ॥
Meaning
ද්රෝණං ච — also Droṇa; භීෂ්මං ච — also Bhīṣma; ජයද්රථං ච — also Jayadratha; කර්ණම් — Karṇa; තථා — also; අන්යාන් — others; අපි — certainly; යෝධ-වීරාන් — great warriors; මයා — by Me; හතාන් — already killed; ත්වම් — you; ජහි — destroy; මා — do not; ව්යථිෂ්ඨාඃ — be disturbed; යුධ්යස්ව — just fight; ජේතා අසි — you will conquer; රණේ — in the fight; සපත්නාන් — enemies.
Translation
Droṇa, Bhīṣma, Jayadratha, Karṇa and the other great warriors have already been destroyed by Me. Therefore, kill them and do not be disturbed. Simply fight, and you will vanquish your enemies in battle.

ඒතච්ඡ්රුත්වා වචනං කේශවස්ය

Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhritarāṣṭra: O King, after hearing these words from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the trembling Arjuna offered obeisances with folded hands again and again. He fearfully spoke to Lord Kriṣṇa in a faltering voice, as follows.

අර්ජුන උවාච
ස්ථානේ හෘෂීකේශ තව ප්රකීර්ත්යා
ජගත්ප්රහෘෂ්යත්යනුරජ්යතේ ච ।
රක්ෂාංසි භීතානි දිශෝ ද්රවංති
සර්වේ නමස්යංති ච සිද්ධසංඝාඃ ॥ 36 ॥
Meaning
අර්ජුනඃ උවාච — Arjuna said; ස්ථානේ — rightly; හෘෂීක-ඊශ — O master of all senses; තව — Your; ප්රකීර්ත්යා — by the glories; ජගත් — the entire world; ප්රහෘෂ්යති — is rejoicing; අනුරජ්යතේ — is becoming attached; ච — and; රක්ෂාංසි — the demons; භීතානි — out of fear; දිශඃ — in all directions; ද්රවංති — are fleeing; සර්වේ — all; නමස්යංති — are offering respects; ච — also; සිද්ධ-සංඝාඃ — the perfect human beings.
Translation
Arjuna said: O master of the senses, the world becomes joyful upon hearing Your name, and thus everyone becomes attached to You. Although the perfected beings offer You their respectful homage, the demons are afraid, and they flee here and there. All this is rightly done.

කස්මාච්ච තේ න නමේරන්මහාත්මන්
ගරීයසේ බ්රහ්මණෝऽප්යාදිකර්ත්රේ ।
අනංත දේවේශ ජගන්නිවාස
ත්වමක්ෂරං සදසත්තත්පරං යත් ॥ 37 ॥

Translation
O great one, greater even than Brahmā, You are the original creator. Why then should they not offer their respectful obeisances unto You? O limitless one, God of gods, refuge of the universe! You are the invincible source, the cause of all causes, transcendental to this material manifestation.

ත්වමාදිදේවඃ පුරුෂඃ පුරාණ-
ස්ත්වමස්ය විශ්වස්ය පරං නිධානම් ।
වේත්තාසි වේද්යං ච පරං ච ධාම

You are the original Personality of Godhead, the oldest, the ultimate sanctuary of this manifested cosmic world. You are the knower of everything, and You are all that is knowable. You are the supreme refuge, above the material modes. O limitless form! This whole cosmic manifestation is pervaded by You!

වායුර්යමෝऽග්න‍ඉර්වරුණඃ ශශාංකඃ
ප්රජාපතිස්ත්වං ප්රපිතාමහශ්ච ।

You are air, and You are the supreme controller! You are fire, You are water, and You are the moon! You are Brahmā, the first living creature, and You are the great-grandfather. I therefore offer my respectful obeisances unto You a thousand times, and again and yet again!

Translation
Thinking of You as my friend, I have rashly addressed You “O Kriṣṇa,” “O Yādava,” “O my friend,” not knowing Your glories. Please forgive whatever I may have done in madness or in love. I have dishonored You many times, jesting as we relaxed, lay on the same bed, or sat or ate together, sometimes alone and sometimes in front of many friends. O infallible one, please excuse me for all those offenses.

පිතාසි ලෝකස්ය චරාචරස්ය
ත්වමස්ය පූජ්යශ්ච ගුරුර්ගරීයාන් ।
න ත්වත්සමෝऽස්ත්යභ්යධිකඃ කුතෝऽන්යෝ
ලෝකත්රයේऽප්යප්රතිමප්රභාව ॥ 43 ॥
Meaning
පිතා — the father; අසි — You are; ලෝකස්ය — of all the world; චර — moving; අචරස්ය — and nonmoving; ත්වම් — You are; අස්ය — of this; පූජ්යඃ — worshipable; ච — also; ගුරුඃ — master; ගරීයාන් — glorious; න — never; ත්වත්-සමඃ — equal to You; අස්ති — there is; අභ්යධිකඃ — greater; කුතඃ — how is it possible; අන්යඃ — other; ලෝක-ත්රයේ — in the three planetary systems; අපි — also; අප්රතිම-ප්රභාව — O immeasurable power.
Translation
You are the father of this complete cosmic manifestation, of the moving and the nonmoving. You are its worshipable chief, the supreme spiritual master. No one is greater than You, nor can anyone be one with You. How then could there be anyone greater than You within the three worlds, O Lord of immeasurable power?

තස්මාත්ප්රණම්ය ප්රණිධාය කායං
ප්රසාදයේ ත්වාමහමීශමීඩ්යම් ।
පිතේව පුත්රස්ය සඛේව සඛ්යුඃ

Translation
You are the Supreme Lord, to be worshiped by every living being. Thus I fall down to offer You my respectful obeisances and ask Your mercy. As a father tolerates the impudence of his son, a friend the impertinence of a friend, or a husband the familiarity of his wife, please tolerate the wrongs I may have done You.

අදෘෂ්ටපූර්වං හෘෂිතෝऽස්මි දෘෂ්ට්වා
භයේන ච ප්රව්යථිතං මනෝ මේ ।
තදේව මේ දර්ශය දේව රූපං

Translation
After seeing this universal form, which I have never seen before, I am gladdened, but at the same time my mind is disturbed with fear. Therefore please bestow Your grace upon me and reveal again Your form as the Personality of Godhead, O Lord of lords, O abode of the universe.

කිරීටිනං ගදිනං චක්රහස්ත-
මිච්ඡාමි ත්වාං ද්රෂ්ටුමහං තථෛව ।
තේනෛව රූපේණ චතුර්භුජේන
සහස්රබාහෝ භව විශ්වමූර්තේ ॥ 46 ॥

කිරීටිනම් — with helmet; ගදිනම් — with club; චක්ර-හස්තම් — disc in hand; ඉච්චාමි — I wish; ත්වාම් — You; ද්රෂ්ටුම් — to see; අහම් — I; තථා ඒව — in that position; තේන ඒව — in that; රූපේණ — form; චතුඃ-භුජේන — four-handed; සහස්ර-බාහෝ — O thousand-handed one; භව — just become; විශ්ව-මූර්තේ — O universal form.
Translation
O universal form, O thousand-armed Lord, I wish to see You in Your four-armed form, with helmeted head and with club, wheel, conch and lotus flower in Your hands. I long to see You in that form.

Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, happily have I shown you, by My internal potency, this supreme universal form within the material world. No one before you has ever seen this primal form, unlimited and full of glaring effulgence.

න වේදයජ්ඤාධ්යයනෛර්න දානෛ-
ර්න ච ක්රියාභිර්න තපෝභිරුග්රෛඃ ।
ඒවංරූපඃ ශක්ය අහං නෘලෝකේ
ද්රෂ්ටුං ත්වදන්යේන කුරුප්රවීර ॥ 48 ॥

Translation
O best of the Kuru warriors, no one before you has ever seen this universal form of Mine, for neither by studying the Vedas, nor by performing sacrifices, nor by charity, nor by pious activities, nor by severe penances can I be seen in this form in the material world.

මා තේ ව්යථා මා ච විමූඪභාවෝ
දෘෂ්ට්වා රූපං ඝෝරමීදෘඞ්‍මමේදම් ।
ව්යපේතභීඃ ප්රීතමනාඃ පුනස්ත්වං
තදේව මේ රූපමිදං ප්රපශ්ය ॥ 49 ॥
Meaning
මා — let it not be; තේ — unto you; ව්යථා — trouble; මා — let it not be; ච — also; විමූඪ-භාවඃ — bewilderment; දෘෂ්ට්වා — by seeing; රූපම් — form; ඝෝරම් — horrible; ඊදෘක් — as it is; මම — My; ඉදම් — this; ව්යපේත-භීඃ — free from all fear; ප්රීත-මනාඃ — pleased in mind; පුනඃ — again; ත්වම් — you; තත් — that; ඒව — thus; මේ — My; රූපම් — form; ඉදම් — this; ප්රපශ්ය — just see.
Translation
You have been perturbed and bewildered by seeing this horrible feature of Mine. Now let it be finished. My devotee, be free again from all disturbances. With a peaceful mind you can now see the form you desire.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
සංජය උවාච
ඉත්යර්ජුනං වාසුදේවස්තථෝක්ත්වා
ස්වකං රූපං දර්ශයාමාස භූයඃ ।
ආශ්වාසයාමාස ච භීතමේනං
භූත්වා පුනඃ සෞම්යවපුර්මහාත්මා ॥ 50 ॥
Meaning
සංජයඃ උවාච — Sañjaya said; ඉති — thus; අර්ජුනම් — unto Arjuna; වාසුදේවඃ — Kriṣṇa; තථා — in that way; උක්ත්වා — speaking; ස්වකම් — His own; රූපම් — form; දර්ශයාං ආස — showed; භූයඃ — again; ආශ්වාසයාං ආස — encouraged; ච — also; භීතම් — fearful; ඒනම් — him; භූත්වා — becoming; පුනඃ — again; සෞම්ය-වපුඃ — the beautiful form; මහා-ආත්මා — the great one.
Translation
Sañjaya said to Dhritarāṣṭra: The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa, having spoken thus to Arjuna, displayed His real four-armed form and at last showed His two-armed form, thus encouraging the fearful Arjuna.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අර්ජුන උවාච
දෘෂ්ට්වේදං මානුෂං රූපං තව සෞම්යං ජනාර්දන ।
ඉදානීමස්මි සංවෘත්තඃ සචේතාඃ ප්රකෘතිං ගතඃ ॥ 51 ॥
Meaning
අර්ජුනඃ උවාච — Arjuna said; දෘෂ්ට්වා — seeing; ඉදම් — this; මානුෂම් — human; රූපම් — form; තව — Your; සෞම්යම් — very beautiful; ජනාර්දන — O chastiser of the enemies; ඉදානීම් — now; අස්මි — I am; සංවෘත්තඃ — settled; ස-චේතාඃ — in my consciousness; ප්රකෘතිම් — to my own nature; ගතඃ — returned.
Translation
When Arjuna thus saw Kriṣṇa in His original form, he said: O Janārdana, seeing this humanlike form, so very beautiful, I am now composed in mind, and I am restored to my original nature.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශ්රීභගවානුවාච
සුදුර්දර්ශමිදං රූපං දෘෂ්ටවානසි යන්මම ।
දේවා අප්යස්ය රූපස්ය නිත්යං දර්ශනකාඞ්‍‍ක්ෂිණඃ ॥ 52 ॥
Meaning
ශ්රී-භගවාන් උවාච — the Supreme Personality of Godhead said; සු-දුර්දර්ශම් — very difficult to see; ඉදම් — this; රූපම් — form; දෘෂ්ටවාන් අසි — as you have seen; යත් — which; මම — of Mine; දේවාඃ — the demigods; අපි — also; අස්ය — this; රූපස්ය — form; නිත්යම් — eternally; දර්ශන-කාංක්ෂිණඃ — aspiring to see.
Translation
The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: My dear Arjuna, this form of Mine you are now seeing is very difficult to behold. Even the demigods are ever seeking the opportunity to see this form, which is so dear.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
නාහං වේදෛර්න තපසා න දානේන න චේජ්යයා ।
ශක්ය ඒවංවිධෝ ද්රෂ්ටුං දෘෂ්ටවානසි මාං යථා ॥ 53 ॥
Meaning
න — never; අහම් — I; වේදෛඃ — by study of the Vedas; න — never; තපසා — by serious penances; න — never; දානේන — by charity; න — never; ච — also; ඉජ්යයා — by worship; ශක්යඃ — it is possible; ඒවම්-විධඃ — like this; ද්රෂ්ටුම් — to see; දෘෂ්ටවාන් — seeing; අසි — you are; මාම් — Me; යථා — as.
Translation
The form you are seeing with your transcendental eyes cannot be understood simply by studying the Vedas, nor by undergoing serious penances, nor by charity, nor by worship. It is not by these means that one can see Me as I am.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භක්ත්ය‍ආ ත්වනන්යයා ශක්ය අහමේවංවිධෝऽර්ජුන ।
ජ්ඤාතුං ද්රෂ්ටුං ච තත්ත්වේන ප්රවේෂ්ටුං ච පරංතප ॥ 54 ॥
Meaning
භක්ත්යා — by devotional service; තු — but; අනන්යයා — without being mixed with fruitive activities or speculative knowledge; ශක්යඃ — possible; අහම් — I; ඒවම්-විධඃ — like this; අර්ජුන — O Arjuna; ජ්ඤාතුම් — to know; ද්රෂ්ටුම් — to see; ච — and; තත්ත්වේන — in fact; ප්රවේෂ්ටුම් — to enter into; ච — also; පරම්-තප — O subduer of the enemy.
Translation
My dear Arjuna, only by undivided devotional service can I be understood as I am, standing before you, and can thus be seen directly. Only in this way can you enter into the mysteries of My understanding.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
මත්කර්මකෘන්මත්පරමෝ මද්භ‍ක්තඃ සංගවර්ජිතඃ ।
නිර්වෛරඃ සර්වභූතේෂු යඃ ස මාමේති පාංඩව ॥ 55 ॥
Meaning
මත්-කර්ම-කෘත් — engaged in doing My work; මත්-පරමඃ — considering Me the Supreme; මත්-භක්තඃ — engaged in My devotional service; සංග-වර්ජිතඃ — freed from the contamination of fruitive activities and mental speculation; නිර්වෛරඃ — without an enemy; සර්ව-භූතේෂු — among all living entities; යඃ — one who; සඃ — he; මාම් — unto Me; ඒති — comes; පාංඩව — O son of Pāṇḍu.
Translation
My dear Arjuna, he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from the contaminations of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who works for Me, who makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is friendly to every living being – he certainly comes to Me.
