සමනුස්මෘතතාවකාංඝ්රියුග්මඃ
ස මනුඃ පංකජසංභවාංගජන්මා ।
නිජමංතරමංතරායහීනං
චරිතං තේ කථයන් සුඛං නිනාය ॥1॥
Meaning
සමනුස්මෘත-තාවක-අංඝ්රි-යුග්මඃ - meditating properly on Thy pair of lotus feet; සඃ මනුඃ - that Manu (Swayambhuva); පංකජසංභව-අංග-ජන්මා - the son of Brahmaa; නිජම්-අංතරම්- - his own Manvantara; අංතරාය-හීනම් - free from all hindrances; චරිතං තේ කථයන් - recounting Thy glories; සුඛං නිනාය - passed peacefully;
Translation
That Swayambhuva Manu, the son of Brahmaa, spent his own Manvantara peacefully, free from all hindrances, meditating on Thy pair of lotus feet and recounting Thy glories.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
සමයේ ඛලු තත්ර කර්දමාඛ්යෝ
ද්රුහිණච්ඡායභවස්තදීයවාචා ।
ධෘතසර්ගරසෝ නිසර්ගරම්යං
භගවංස්ත්වාමයුතං සමාඃ සිෂේවේ ॥2॥
Meaning
සමයේ ඛලු තත්ර - at that very time; කර්දම-ආඛ්යඃ - (the Prajaapati) named Kardama; ද්රුහිණ-ච්ඡාය-භවඃ- - born from the shadow of Brahmaa; තදීය-වාචා - following his (Brahmaa's) words; ධෘත-සර්ග-රසඃ - keenly interested in creation; නිසර්ග-රම්යං භගවන්-ත්වාම්- - O Lord! Who are naturally charming; අයුතං සමාඃ - for ten thousand years; සිෂේවේ - worshipped (Thee);
Translation
During that time the Prajaapati named Kardama who was born from the shadow of Brahmaa, following his (Brahmaa's) words became keenly interested in creation. He worshipped Thee who are naturally charming, for ten thousand years.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ගරුඩෝපරි කාලමේඝක්රමං
විලසත්කේලිසරෝජපාණිපද්මම් ।
හසිතෝල්ලසිතානනං විභෝ ත්වං
වපුරාවිෂ්කුරුෂේ ස්ම කර්දමාය ॥3॥
Meaning
ගරුඩ-උපරි - on Garuda; කාල-මේඝ-ක්රමම් - as beautiful as a dark rain-bearing cloud; විලසත්-කේලි-සරෝජ-පාණි-පද්මම් - holding in Thy hand a lustrous lotus; හසිත-උල්ලාසිත-ආනනම් - (with Thy) face lit up with a smile; විභෝ ත්වං - O Lord! Thou; වපුඃ-ආවිෂ්කුරුෂේ ස්ම - (Thy) form did manifest; කර්දමාය - for Kardama;
Translation
O Lord! Thou manifested Thy form for Kardama, sitting on Garuda, as beautiful as a dark rain-bearing cloud, holding a lustrous lotus in Thy hand, with your face lit up with a smile.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ස්තුවතේ පුලකාවෘතාය තස්මෛ
මනුපුත්රීං දයිතාං නවාපි පුත්රීඃ ।
කපිලං ච සුතං ස්වමේව පශ්චාත්
ස්වගතිං චාප්යනුගෘහ්ය නිර්ගතෝऽභූඃ ॥4॥
Meaning
ස්තුවතේ පුලක-ආවෘතාය තස්මෛ - with horripilation over his body, who was praising (Thee) to him; මනුපුත්රීම් - the daughter of Manu (Devahooti); දයිතාම් - as wife; නව-අපි පුත්රීඃ - also nine daughters; කපිලං ච සුතම් - and Kapil as son; ස්වම්-ඒව පශ්චාත් - Thyself finally; ස්වගතිං ච-අපි-අනුගෘහ්ය - and union with Thee also conferring; නිර්ගතඃ-අභූඃ - Thou disappeared;
Translation
Kardama was praising Thee thrilled with devotion. Thou blessed that he would have Manu's daughter Devahooti as wife. Thou also blessed that he would have nine daughters, that Thou Thyself will be born as his son Kapil and also that he (Kadarma) would finally attain union with Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ස මනුඃ ශතරූපයා මහිෂ්යා
ගුණවත්යා සුතයා ච දේවහූත්යා ।
භවදීරිතනාරදෝපදිෂ්ටඃ
සමගාත් කර්දමමාගතිප්රතීක්ෂම් ॥5॥
Meaning
සඃ මනුඃ - that Manu; ශතරූපයා මහිෂ්යා - (along with) queen Shatarupaa; ගුණවත්යා සුතයා දේවහූත්යා ච - and the virtuous daughter Devahooti; භවත්-ඊරිත-නාරද-උපදිෂ්ටඃ - advised by Naarada who was prompted by Thee; සමගාත් කර්දමම්- - approached Kardama; ආගති-ප්රතීක්ෂං - (who was) awaiting (their) arrival;
Translation
Manu along with his queen wife Shatarupa and the virtuous daughter Devahooti, as advised by Naarada who was prompted by Thee, approached Kardama who was awaiting their arrival.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
මනුනෝපහෘතාං ච දේවහූතිං
තරුණීරත්නමවාප්ය කර්දමෝऽසෞ ।
භවදර්චනනිවෘතෝऽපි තස්යාං
දෘඪශුශ්රූෂණයා දධෞ ප්රසාදම් ॥6॥
Meaning
මනුනා-උපහෘතාං ච - and given respectfully by Manu; දේවහූතිං තරුණී-රත්නම්- - Devahooti, a jewel among damsels; අවාප්ය කර්දමඃ-අසෞ - having got, that Kardama; භවත්-අර්චන-නිර්වෘතඃ-අපි - though content with worshipping Thee,; තස්යාං දෘඪ-ශුශ්රූෂණයා - by her dedicated service; දධෞ ප්රසාදම් - (was) pleased with her;
Translation
Devahooti who was a gem among women was respectfully given by Manu to Kardama. Kardama, though solely delighted in worshipping Thee, was pleased with her by her dedicated service to him.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ස පුනස්ත්වදුපාසනප්රභාවා-
ද්දයිතාකාමකෘතේ කෘතේ විමානේ ।
වනිතාකුලසංකුලෝ නවාත්මා
ව්යහරද්දේවපථේෂු දේවහූත්යා ॥7॥
Meaning
සඃ පුන;- - he (Kardama); ත්වත්-උපාසන-ප්රභාවාත්- - because of the glory of Thy worship; දයිතා-කාම-කෘතේ - for fulfilling the desires of his loving wife; කෘතේ විමානේ - in the aerial vehicle which was made; වනිතා-කුල-සංකුලඃ - full of female attendants; නව-ආත්මා - taking on a new body; ව්යහරත්-දේවපථේෂු - sported in the garden of the gods; දේවහූත්යා - (with) Devahooti;
Translation
Thereafter Kardama by the glory of worshipping Thee, to fulfill the desires of his loving wife, took on a new body, got an aerial vehicle made, which was full of female attendants, and sported in the garden of the gods along with Devahooti.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශතවර්ෂමථ ව්යතීත්ය සෝऽයං
නව කන්යාඃ සමවාප්ය ධන්යරූපාඃ ।
වනයානසමුද්යතෝऽපි කාංතා-
හිතකෘත්ත්වජ්ජනනෝත්සුකෝ න්යවාත්සීත් ॥8॥
Meaning
ශත-වර්ෂම්-අථ ව්යතීත්ය - then after spending a hundred years; සඃ-අයම් - that this (Kardama); නව කන්යාඃ සමවාප්ය - nine daughters begetting; ධන්ය-රූපාඃ - who were very beautiful; වන-යාන-සමුද්යතඃ-අපි - though preparing to go to the forest; කාංතා-හිත-කෘත්- - wishing to fulfill the desire of his wife (and); ත්වත්-ජනන-උත්සුකඃ - eager for Thy birth (as his son); න්යවාත්සීත් - stayed on (at home);
Translation
After spending a hundred years thus and begetting nine very beautiful daughters, Kardama wanted to take up the ascetic life and retire to the forest. Yielding to his wife's wishes and eagerly awaiting Thy birth as their son, he continued to stay on at home.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
නිජභර්තෘගිරා භවන්නිෂේවා-
නිරතායාමථ දේව දේවහූත්යාම් ।
කපිලස්ත්වමජායථා ජනානාං
ප්රථයිෂ්යන් පරමාත්මතත්ත්වවිද්යාම් ॥9॥
Meaning
නිජ-භර්තෘ-ගිරා - at the words of her husband; භවත්-නිෂේවා-නිරතායාම්- - who was ever intent on Thy worship; අථ දේව - then, O Lord!; දේවහූත්යාම් - to Devahooti; කපිල-ත්වම්-අජායථා - as Kapil Thou were born; ජනානාම් - amongst the people; ප්රථයිෂ්යන් - to proclaim; පරම-ආත්ම-තත්ව-විද්යාම් - the knowledge of the truth of the Supreme Being;
Translation
O Lord! To Devahooti who, on the advise of her husband was ever engaged in worshipping Thee, Thou were born as Kapil in order to teach mankind the means for the attainment of the Supreme Reality.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
වනමේයුෂි කර්දමේ ප්රසන්නේ
මතසර්වස්වමුපාදිශන් ජනන්යෛ ।
කපිලාත්මක වායුමංදිරේශ
ත්වරිතං ත්වං පරිපාහි මාං ගදෞඝාත් ॥10॥
Meaning
වනම්-ඒයුෂි කර්දමේ ප්රසන්නේ - when Kardama left for the forest happily; මත-සර්වස්වම්- - the entire philosophy (of Thine); උපාදිශන් ජනන්යෛ - (Thou) imparted to (Thy) mother; කපිල-ආත්මක - O Thou incarnate as Kapil!; වායු-මංදිර-ඊශ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ත්වරිතම් - hastily; ත්වං පරිපාහි - Thou relieve; මාං ගද-ඖඝාත් - me from my many miseries;
Translation
O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who were incarnate as Kapil, when Kardama left for the forest with a sense of fulfillment, Thou imparted the whole of Thy philosophy to Thy mother. Deign to hastily save me from my many ailments.
