ස්ථිතස්ස කමලෝද්භවස්තව හි නාභිපංකේරුහේ
කුතඃ ස්විදිදමංබුධාවුදිතමිත්යනාලෝකයන් ।
තදීක්ෂණකුතූහලාත් ප්රතිදිශං විවෘත්තානන-
ශ්චතුර්වදනතාමගාද්විකසදෂ්ටදෘෂ්ට්යංබුජාම් ॥1॥
Meaning
ස්ථිතඃ - - seated; ස කමලෝද්භවඃ - - he, the lotus born (Brahmaa); තව හි නාභිපංකේරුහේ - in Thy navel lotus itself; කුතඃ ස්විත්- - from where indeed; ඉදම්-අංබුධෞ-උදිතම්- - this (lotus) in the ocean has come up; ඉති-අනාලෝකයන් - this not comprehending; තත්-ඊක්ෂණ-කුතූහලාත් - out of eagerness to find the source; ප්රතිදිශං විවෘත්ත-ආනනඃ - - in all directions (he) turned his face; චතුඃ-වදනතාම්-අගාත්- - (and thus) became endowed with four faces; විකසත්-අෂ්ට-දෘෂ්ටි-අංබුජාම් - with eight eyes (beautiful) like full blown lotuses;
Translation
Brahma sitting on the full blown lotus emerging from Thy lotus-like navel, and wondering about its origin looked all around by turning his face in all the directions. He was thus endowed with four faces and lotus-like eight beautiful eyes.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
මහාර්ණවවිඝූර්ණිතං කමලමේව තත්කේවලං
විලෝක්ය තදුපාශ්රයං තව තනුං තු නාලෝකයන් ।
ක ඒෂ කමලෝදරේ මහති නිස්සහායෝ හ්යහං
කුතඃ ස්විදිදංබුජං සමජනීති චිංතාමගාත් ॥2॥
Meaning
මහාර්ණව-විඝූර්ණිතං - tossing in the vast ocean; කමලම්-ඒව තත්-කේවලං - that lotus all alone; විලෝක්ය තත්-උපාශ්රයං - seeing its support (the stem); තව තනුං තු න-ආලෝකයන් - and not seeing Thy body; කඃ ඒෂ - who is this (me); කමල-උදරේ මහති - inside this huge lotus; නිස්සහායඃ හි-අහං - without any support (helpless) am I; කුතඃ ස්විත්- - from where; ඉදම්-අංබුජං සමජනි- - did this lotus originate; ඉති චිංතාම්-අගාත් - (he) was immersed in such thoughts;
Translation
Brahmaa found himself to be all alone in the huge lotus which was tossing about in the vast ocean of causal waters. He saw the stem supporting the lotus but was unable to see Thy body and wondered as to who he was helpless and all alone and also of the source of the lotus.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අමුෂ්ය හි සරෝරුහඃ කිමපි කාරණං සංභ්වේ-
දිති ස්ම කෘතනිශ්චයස්ස ඛලු නාලරංධ්රාධ්වනා ।
ස්වයෝගබලවිද්යයා සමවරූඪවාන් ප්රෞඪධී -
ස්ත්වදීයමතිමෝහනං න තු කලේවරං දෘෂ්ටවාන් ॥3॥
Meaning
අමුෂ්ය හි සරෝරුහඃ - certainly for this lotus; කිම්-අපි කාරණං සංභවේත්- - there must be some cause (place) of origin; ඉති ස්ම කෘතනිශ්චයඃ - - thus having concluded; ස ඛලු - he (Brahmaa) indeed; නාල-රංධ්ර-අධ්වනා - through the hollow in the lotus stem; ස්ව-යෝග-බල-විධ්යයා - with the power of his yogic knowledge; ස්මවරූඪවාන් - descended; ප්රෞඪධීඃ - - he of mighty intellect; ත්වදීයම්-අති-මෝහනං - Thy this most enchanting; න තු කලේවරං දෘෂ්ටවාන් - form but could not perceive;
Translation
Brahmaa who was of mighty intellect, decided that there must definitely be some source of this lotus. Using his yogic power he descended through the hollow of the lotus stem to look for the cause. He, however could not not see Thy most enchanting form.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තතඃ සකලනාලිකාවිවරමාර්ගගෝ මාර්ගයන්
ප්රයස්ය ශතවත්සරං කිමපි නෛව සංදෘෂ්ටවාන් ।
නිවෘත්ය කමලෝදරේ සුඛනිෂණ්ණ ඒකාග්රධීඃ
සමාධිබලමාදධේ භවදනුග්රහෛකාග්රහී ॥4॥
Meaning
තතඃ - then; සකල-නාලිකා-විවර-මාර්ගගඃ - going through all the orifices of the stem; මාර්ගයන් - searching; ප්රයස්ය ශතවත්සරං - striving for hundred divine years; කිම්-අපි න-ඒව සංදෘෂ්ටවාන් - could not see anything at all; නිවෘත්ය කමල-උදරේ - (he then) returned inside the lotus; සුඛනිෂණ්ණ ඒකාග්රධීඃ - sitting comfortably with one pointed intellect; සමාධි-බලම්-ආදධේ - resorted to deep samaadhi; භවත්-අනුග්රහ-ඒක-ආග්රහී - solely desirous of Thy grace;
Translation
Brahmaa spent a hundred divine years strenuously searching through all the orifices of the lotus stem but he could not see anything. He returned to the lotus and sat calmly with one pointed concentration and resorted to deep samaadhi solely desirous of Thy grace.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශතේන පරිවත්සරෛර්දෘඪසමාධිබංධෝල්ලසත්-
ප්රබෝධවිශදීකෘතඃ ස ඛලු පද්මිනීසංභවඃ ।
අදෘෂ්ටචරමද්භුතං තව හි රූපමංතර්දෘශා
ව්යචෂ්ට පරිතුෂ්ටධීර්භුජගභෝගභාගාශ්රයම් ॥5॥
Meaning
ශතේන පරිවත්සරෛඃ - - for a hundred (divine) years; දෘඪ-සමාධි-බංධ-උල්ලසත්- - of practising of undisturbed samaadhi, resulted; ප්රබෝධ-විශදීකෘතඃ - (and ) the knowledge dawned (in him); ස ඛලු පද්මිනීසංභවඃ - he, indeed, the lotus born (Brahmaa); අදෘෂ්ටචරම්-අද්භුතං - not seen by humans, the wonderful; තව හි රූපම්- - Thy divine form; අංතර්දෘශා ව්යචෂ්ට - in his inner vision saw; පරිතුෂ්ටධීඃ- - (with) heart full of contentment; භුජග-භෝගභාග-ආශ්රයං - on a part of the body of the great serpent, resting;
Translation
The lotus born Brahmaa was absorbed in undisturbed samaadhi for a hundred divine years.The knowledge of Reality then dawned on him. He then had the vision of Thy wonderful form which humans cannot easily see, resting on a part of Aadishesha's (the great serpent's), body. So he was full of happiness and contentment.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
කිරීටමුකුටෝල්ලසත්කටකහාරකේයූරයුඞ්-
මණිස්ඵුරිතමේඛලං සුපරිවීතපීතාංබරම් ।
කලායකුසුමප්රභං ගලතලෝල්ලසත්කෞස්තුභං
වපුස්තදයි භාවයේ කමලජන්මේ දර්ශිතම් ॥6॥
Meaning
කිරීට-මුකුට-උල්ලසත්- - a crown,with a diadem shining; කටක-හාර-කේයූර-යුක්- - with bracelets, necklaces and shoulder ornaments; මණි-ස්ඵුරිත-මේඛලං - with gems studded waist band; සුපරිවීත-පීතාංබරම් - with beautifully worn yellow silk cloth; කලාය-කුසුම-ප්රභං - like the Kalaaya flower (blue lily) brilliant (blue complexion); ගල-තල-උල්ලසත්-කෞස්තුභං - (with) around the neck the shining Kaustubha jewel; වපුඃ -තත්-අයි භාවයේ - on that form of Thine, O Lord! I meditate; කමලජන්මනේ දර්ශිතං - to the lotus born (Brahmaa) which was revealed;
Translation
O Lord! That divine form of Thine with the golden crown, with a brilliant blue complexion like the beautiful Kalaaya flower (blue lily), with the shining Kaustubh jewel adorning Thy neck, with shoulder ornaments and bracelets , and with studded golden waistband and beautifully wearing a yellow silk garment (Peetaambara). This Thy form was revealed to the lotus born Brahmaa , on which I meditate.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශ්රුතිප්රකරදර්ශිතප්රචුරවෛභව ශ්රීපතේ
හරේ ජය ජය ප්රභෝ පදමුපෛෂි දිෂ්ට්යා දෘශෝඃ ।
කුරුෂ්ව ධියමාශු මේ භුවනනිර්මිතෞ කර්මඨා-
මිති ද්රුහිණවර්ණිතස්වගුණබංහිමා පාහි මාම් ॥7॥
Meaning
ශ්රුති-ප්රකර- - in several Vedic texts; දර්ශිත-ප්රචුර-වෛභව - declared, the abundant glory; ශ්රීපතේ - O Consort of Laxmi!; හරේ - O Destroyer of all sorrows; ජය ජය ප්රභෝ - Hail O Lord!; පදම්-උපෛෂි දිෂ්ට්යා දෘශෝඃ - Thou have appeared, by good fortune, before my eyes; කුරුෂ්ව - make; ධියම්-ආශු මේ - my intellect, soon; භුවන-නිර්මිතෞ කර්මඨාම්- - in the creation of the world, capable; ඉති ද්රුහිණ-වර්ණිත- - thus, described by Brahmaa; ස්වගුණ-බංහිමා - (Thou possessing) countless excellences; පාහි මාම් - please protect me;
Translation
"O Consort of Laxmi! Thy abundant glories have been sung of in the Vedaas. Hail O all-powerful Lord and remover of sorrows! It is my good fortune that Thou have revealed Thy sacred form to me. O Lord! Make my intelligence capable of creating the world." Thou, whose innumerable excellences were thus praised by Brahma, please be merciful to protect me.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ලභස්ව භුවනත්රයීරචනදක්ෂතාමක්ෂතාං
ගෘහාණ මදනුග්රහං කුරු තපශ්ච භූයෝ විධේ ।
භවත්වඛිලසාධනී මයි ච භක්තිරත්යුත්කටේ-
ත්යුදීර්ය ගිරමාදධා මුදිතචේතසං වේධසම් ॥8॥
Meaning
ලභස්ව - may you attain; භුවනත්රයී-රචන-දක්ෂතාම්-අක්ෂතාං - in creating the three worlds, expertise unending; ගෘහාණ මත්-අනුග්රහං - receive My blessings; කුරු තපඃ -ච භූයඃ -විධේ - and do Tapa (penance) again O Brahmaa; භවතු-අඛිල-සාධනී - may that accomplish everything; මයි ච භක්තිඃ -අති-උත්කටා- - and intense devotion to me; ඉති-උදීර්ය ගිරම්- - saying these words; ආදධා මුදිත-චේතසං විධසම් - rendered a happy mind to Brahmaa;
Translation
O Brahmaa, may you be endowed with unending capability and expertise in the creation of the three worlds. May your devotion excel. Do penance again by which you will accomplish everything.' So saying Thou made Brahmaa's mind immensely happy.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශතං කෘතතපාස්තතඃ ස ඛලු දිව්යසංවත්සරා-
නවාප්ය ච තපෝබලං මතිබලං ච පූර්වාධිකම් ।
උදීක්ෂ්ය කිල කංපිතං පයසි පංකජං වායුනා
භවද්බලවිජෘංභිතඃ පවනපාථසී පීතවාන් ॥9॥
Meaning
ශතං කෘත-තපාඃ-තතඃ - for a hundred years having done penance, then; ස ඛලු දිව්ය-සංවත්සරාන්- - he (Brahmaa) indeed for hundred divine years; අවාප්ය ච තපෝබලං මතිබලං - attained spiritual powers and mental powers; ච පූර්ව-අධිකම් - more than ever before; උදීක්ෂ්ය කිල - and seeing indeed; කංපිතං පයසි පංකජං - the lotus swaying in the waters; වායුනා - by the wind; භවත්-බල විජෘංභිතඃ - by Thy prowess strengthened; පවනපාථසී පීතවාන් - the wind and the waters (he) drank up;
Translation
Brahmaa then did penance for another hundred divine years, by which he attained spiritual and mental powers even more than before. He saw the lotus on which he was seated, swaying in the causal waters. He, with the powers given by Thee, drank the wind and the waters.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තවෛව කෘපයා පුනස්සරසිජේන තේනෛව සඃ
ප්රකල්ප්ය භුවනත්රයීං ප්රවවෘතේ ප්රජානිර්මිතෞ ।
තථාවිධකෘපාභරෝ ගුරුමරුත්පුරාධීශ්වර
ත්වමාශු පරිපාහි මාං ගුරුදයෝක්ෂිතෛරීක්ෂිතෛඃ ॥10॥
Meaning
තව-ඒව කෘපයා - by Thy grace alone; පුනඃ - - then; සරසිජේන තේන-ඒව - out of that lotus itself; සඃ - Brahmaa; ප්රකල්ප්ය භුවනත්රයීං - created the three worlds; ප්රවවෘතේ ප්රජානිර්මිතෞ - engaged himself in creating various species of beings; තථා-විධ-කෘපාභරඃ - (O Thou!) who abound in such compassion; ගුරුමරුත්පුරාධීශ්වර - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ත්වම්-ආශු පරිපාහි මාං - Thou soon protect me; ගුරු-දයා-උක්ෂිතඃ ඊක්ෂතෛඃ - great mercy overflowing Thy glances;
Translation
Brahmaa, then, by Thy grace created the three worlds out of that lotus itself and got engaged in creating the various species of beings. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Full of such compassion please cast Thy glance overflowing with great mercy on me and protect me soon.
