සත්රාජිතස්ත්වමථ ලුබ්ධවදර්කලබ්ධං
දිව්යං ස්යමංතකමණිං භගවන්නයාචීඃ ।
තත්කාරණං බහුවිධං මම භාති නූනං
තස්යාත්මජාං ත්වයි රතාං ඡලතෝ විවෝඪුම් ॥1॥
Meaning
සත්රාජිතඃ- - from Satraajit; ත්වම්-අථ - Thou then; ලුබ්ධ-වත්- - greedy man like; අර්ක-ලබ්ධං - from the sun attained; දිව්යං ස්යමංතක-මණිං - divine Syamantaka jewel; භගවන්-අයාචීඃ - O Lord Thou asked for; තත්-කාරණං - the reason; බහු-විධං - many fold; මම භාති නූනං - to me appeals indeed; තස්ය-ආත්මජාං - his daughter; ත්වයි රතාං - in Thee infatuated; ඡලතඃ විවෝඪුම් - by strategy to marry;
Translation
Thou then like a greedy man asked for the divine Syamantaka jewel from Satraajit who had got it from the Sun god. O Lord! The reasons for this may be many. What appeals to me indeed is that this was a strategy by which Thou wanted to marry his daughter (Satyabhaamaa) who was in love with Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අදත්තං තං තුභ්යං මණිවරමනේනාල්පමනසා
ප්රසේනස්තද්භ්රාතා ගලභුවි වහන් ප්රාප මෘගයාම් ।
අහන්නේනං සිංහෝ මණිමහසි මාංසභ්රමවශාත්
කපීංද්රස්තං හත්වා මණිමපි ච බාලාය දදිවාන් ॥2॥
Meaning
අදත්තං තං - not giving that; තුභ්යං මණිවරම්- - to Thee the precious jewel; අනේන-අල්ප-මනසා - by him the narrow minded; ප්රසේනඃ-තත්-භ්රාතා - Prasena, his brother; ගල-භුවි වහන් - in the neck wearing; ප්රාප මෘගයාම් - went hunting; අහන්-ඒනං සිංහඃ - killed him the lion; මණි-මහසි - in the jewel brilliance; මාංස-භ්රම-වශාත් - for flesh mistaking,; කපීංද්රඃ-තං හත්වා - the great monkey him (the lion) killing; මණිම්-අපි ච - the jewel also and; බාලාය දදිවාන් - to (his) child gave;
Translation
The narrow minded one (Satraajit) did not give the precious jewel to Thee. His brother Prasena wore it round his neck and went away hunting. A lion mistook the jewel because of its brilliance to be a lump of flesh and so he killed Prasena. The great monkey (Jaambavaana) killed the lion and gave the jewel to his child.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශශංසුඃ සත්රාජිද්ගිරමනු ජනාස්ත්වාං මණිහරං
ජනානාං පීයූෂං භවති ගුණිනාං දෝෂකණිකා ।
තතඃ සර්වජ්ඤෝऽපි ස්වජනසහිතෝ මාර්ගණපරඃ
ප්රසේනං තං දෘෂ්ට්වා හරිමපි ගතෝऽභූඃ කපිගුහාම් ॥3॥
Meaning
ශශංසුඃ - talked about; සත්රාජිත්-ගිරම්-අනු - Satraajit's words following; ජනාඃ-ත්වාං මණි-හරං - the people, Thou jewel thief; ජනානාං පීයූෂං - for the people nectar like; භවති ගුණිනාං - it is of the virtuous; දෝෂ-කණිකා - fault slightest; තතඃ සර්වජ්ඤඃ-අපි - therefore knowing everything also; ස්ව-ජන-සහිතඃ - Thy people along with; මාර්ගණ-පරඃ - to search intent; ප්රසේනං තං - that Prasen; දෘෂ්ට්වා හරිම්-අපි - seeing the lion also; ගතඃ-අභූඃ - went; කපි-ගුහාම් - (into) the monkey's cave;
Translation
Influenced by the allegations of Satraajit, people suspected that Thou had stolen the jewel. Even a slight fault in the conduct of the virtuous person is like nectar for people in general, for it gives them a chance to slight that person. In spite of the fact that Thou knew everything about the jewel, Thou went in search for it with Thy men. Thou saw Prasena and the lion lying dead and thus were led to the monkey (Jaambavaan's) cave.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භවංතමවිතර්කයන්නතිවයාඃ ස්වයං ජාංබවාන්
මුකුංදශරණං හි මාං ක ඉහ රෝද්ධුමිත්යාලපන් ।
විභෝ රඝුපතේ හරේ ජය ජයේත්යලං මුෂ්ටිභි-
ශ්චිරං තව සමර්චනං ව්යධිත භක්තචූඩාමණිඃ ॥4॥
Meaning
භවංතම්-අවිතර්කයන්- - Thee not identifying; අති-වයාඃ - due to age; ස්වයං ජාංබවාන් - himself Jaambavaan; මුකුංද-ශරණං - to Mukunda surrendered; හි මාං කඃ-ඉහ - indeed me, who here; රෝද්ධුම්-ඉති-ආලපන් - is to obstruct, thus saying; විභෝ රඝුපතේ - O Lord Raama!; හරේ ජය ජය-ඉති-අලං - O Hari! Victory to Thee! Thus; මුෂ්ටිභිඃ-චිරං - with fists for long; තව සමර්චනං ව්යධිත - Thy worship performed; භක්තචූඩාමණිඃ - the crest jewel of the devotees;
Translation
The aged Jaambavaan did not know Thy identity and so exclaimed, 'who has come to obstruct me who has Mukund as his only resort?' As, the crest jewel of the devotees, he was invoking Thee with "O Lord Raam! O Hari! Victory be to Thee!, he worshipped Thee with blows of his fists.

බුධ්වාऽථ තේන දත්තාං නවරමණීං වරමණිං ච පරිගෘහ්ණන් ।
අනුගෘහ්ණන්නමුමාගාඃ සපදි ච සත්රාජිතේ මණිං ප්රාදාඃ ॥5॥
Meaning
බුධ්වා-අථ - recognizing (Thee) then; තේන දත්තාං - by him was given; නව-රමණීං - to the young girl (his daughter); වර-මණිං ච - the precious jewel and; පරිගෘහ්ණන් - accepting; අනුගෘහ්ණන්-අමුම්- - blessing him; ආගාඃ සපදි - returning immediately; ච සත්රාජිතේ - and to Satraajit; මණිං ප්රාදාඃ - the jewel gave back;
Translation
Finally when Jaambavaan recognized Thee, he gave to Thee his young daughter and the jewel. Thou accepted them and blessed him, and immediately returned and gave back the jewel, the Syamantaka Mani, to Satraajit.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තදනු ස ඛලු බ්රීලාලෝලෝ විලෝලවිලෝචනාං
දුහිතරමහෝ ධීමාන් භාමාං ගිරෛව පරාර්පිතාම් ।
අදිත මණිනා තුභ්යං ලභ්යං සමේත්ය භවානපි
ප්රමුදිතමනාස්තස්යෛවාදාන්මණිං ගහනාශයඃ ॥6॥
Meaning
තදනු ස ඛලු - thereafter he indeed; බ්රීලා-ලෝලඃ - shame filled with; විලෝල-ලෝචනාං - with loving eyes; දුහිතරම්-අහෝ - the daughter Oh!; ධීමාන් - the intelligent one (Satraajit); භාමාන් - Satyabhaamaa; ගිරා-ඒව - by words only; පර-අර්පිතාම් - given to another; අදිත මණිනා - gave (along with) the jewel; තුභ්යං ලභ්යම් - to Thee, the worth getting; සමේත්ය භවාන්-අපි - having got, Thou also; ප්රමුදිත-මනාඃ- - with a happy mind; තස්ය-ඒව-ආදාත්- - to him only gave back; මණිම් - the jewel; ගහන-ආශයඃ - deep thinking (Thou);
Translation
Satraajit, the intelligent one, was then filled with shame for his conduct with Thee. He had given away his roving eyed daughter Satyabhaamaa to someone verbally only. He gave her to Thee along with the jewel. Thou, happily, with Thy deep and unfathomable reasoning gave back the jewel, having got what was worth getting (Satyabhaamaa).

ව්රීලාකුලාං රමයති ත්වයි සත්යභාමාං
කෞංතේයදාහකථයාථ කුරූන් ප්රයාතේ ।
හී ගාංදිනේයකෘතවර්මගිරා නිපාත්ය
සත්රාජිතං ශතධනුර්මණිමාජහාර ॥7॥
Meaning
ව්රීලා-ආකුලාං - by shyness overcome; රමයති ත්වයි - (her) delighting (when) Thou were; සත්යභාමාම් - her Satyabhaamaa; කෞංතේය-දාහ- - the son's of Kunti's burning; කථයා-අථ - news, then; කුරූන් ප්රයාතේ - Thou to Kurukshetra went away; හී - how shameful; ගාංදිනේය-කෘතවර්ම-ගිරා - by Akrura and Kritavarmaa's words; නිපාත්ය සත්රාජිතං - killing Satraajit; ශතධනුඃ-මණිම්-ආජහාර - Shatadhanu the jewel took away;
Translation
When Thou were delighting the shy Satyabhaamaa, there was the news of Kunti's sons being burnt in the wax palace. So Thou went away to the land of the Kurus. Under the promptings of Akrura and Kritvermaa, Shatadhanu killed Satraajit and took away the jewel.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශෝකාත් කුරූනුපගතාමවලෝක්ය කාංතාං
හත්වා ද්රුතං ශතධනුං සමහර්ෂයස්තාම් ।
රත්නේ සශංක ඉව මෛථිලගේහමේත්ය
රාමෝ ගදාං සමශිශික්ෂත ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රම් ॥8॥
Meaning
ශෝකාත් - due to grief; කුරූන්-උපගතාම්- - to the country of Kuru's having come; අවලෝක්ය කාංතාං - seeing (Thy) wife; හත්වා ද්රුතං ශතධනුං - killing quickly Shatadhanu; සමහර්ෂයඃ-තාම් - appeased her; රත්නේ සශංක ඉව - about the jewel doubting, as though; මෛථිල-ගේහම්-ඒත්ය - to the king of Mithila's abode reaching; රාමෝ ගදාං - Balaraam the mace wielding; සමශිශික්ෂත - taught well; ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රම් - to Duryodhana;
Translation
Satyabhaama was overcome with grief and went to Kurukshetra. Seeing her, Thou quickly killed Shatadhanu and made her happy. As though doubting the whereabouts of the jewel, Balaraam went to the abode of the king of Mithilaa. There he very well trained Duryodhana in the art of wielding the mace.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අක්රූර ඒෂ භගවන් භවදිච්ඡයෛව
සත්රාජිතඃ කුචරිතස්ය යුයෝජ හිංසාම් ।
අක්රූරතෝ මණිමනාහෘතවාන් පුනස්ත්වං
තස්යෛව භූතිමුපධාතුමිති බ්රුවංති ॥9॥
Meaning
අක්රූර ඒෂ - Akrura, this; භගවන් - O Lord!; භවත්-ඉච්ඡයා-ඒව - by Thy will alone; සත්රාජිතඃ කුචරිතස්ය - of Satraajit, the notorious; යුයෝජ හිංසාම් - caused the death; අක්රූරතඃ මණිම්- - from Akrura the jewel; අනාහෘතවාන් පුනඃ-ත්වං - did not take back again Thou; තස්ය ඒව භූතිම්- - his alone prosperity; උපධාතුම්- - to bring about; ඉති බ්රුවංති - so it is said;
Translation
This, Akrura, O Lord! By Thy will alone caused the death of the notorious Satraajit. It is said that with a mind to bring about his prosperity, Thou did not take back the jewel from Akrura.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භක්තස්ත්වයි ස්ථිරතරඃ ස හි ගාංදිනේය-
ස්තස්යෛව කාපථමතිඃ කථමීශ ජාතා ।
විජ්ඤානවාන් ප්රශමවානහමිත්යුදීර්ණං
ගර්වං ධ්රුවං ශමයිතුං භවතා කෘතෛව ॥10॥
Meaning
භක්තඃ-ත්වයි - devoted to Thee; ස්ථිරතරඃ - very firmly; ස හි ගාංදිනේයඃ - that indeed Akrura; තස්ය-ඒව - his also; කාපථ-මතිඃ - evil mind; කථම්-ඊශ ජාතා - how O Lord! was produced; විජ්ඤානවාන් - all knowing; ප්රශමවාන්-අහම්- - well self controlled am I; ඉති-උදීර්ණං ගර්වං - thus bloated vanity; ධ්රුවං ශමයිතුම් - certainly to curb; භවතා කෘතා-ඒව - by Thee was brought about only;
Translation
Akrura was very firmly devoted to Thee. O Lord! How could there be an evil thought in his mind (of killing Satraajit and getting the jewel)? He was bloated with the vanity of having self knowledge and self control. Certainly to curb that, Thou brought this about.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
යාතං භයේන කෘතවර්මයුතං පුනස්ත-
මාහූය තද්විනිහිතං ච මණිං ප්රකාශ්ය ।
තත්රෛව සුව්රතධරේ විනිධාය තුෂ්යන්
භාමාකුචාංතශයනඃ පවනේශ පායාඃ ॥11॥
Meaning
යාතං භයේන - having fled in fear; කෘතවර්මයුතං - Kritvarma along with; පුනඃ-තම්-ආහූය - again calling him; තත්-විනිහිතං ච - with him hidden and; මණිං ප්රකාශ්ය - the jewel bringing out; තත්ර-ඒව සුව්රත-ධරේ - there only (him) with good deeds, endowed; විනිධාය තුෂ්යන් - retaining and satisfying him; භාමා-කුචාංත-ශයනඃ - (on) Satyabhaamaa's bosom reclined; පවනේශ පායාඃ - O Lord of Guruvaayur! Save me;
Translation
Akrura with Kritvarma fled in fear. Thou called him again and brought out the jewel hidden with him. Thou then let him retain the jewel who was of good conduct, and satisfied him. Thou then lived happily with Satyabhaamaa reclining on her bosom. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
