ශ්ලෝකඃ
ප්රාචේතසස්තු භගවන්නපරෝ හි දක්ෂ-
ස්ත්වත්සේවනං ව්යධිත සර්ගවිවෘද්ධිකාමඃ ।
ආවිර්බභූවිථ තදා ලසදෂ්ටබාහු-
ස්තස්මෛ වරං දදිථ තාං ච වධූමසික්නීම් ॥1॥
Meaning
ප්රාචේතඃ-තු - a son of Prachetas, indeed,; භගවන්- - O Lord!; අපරෝ හි දක්ෂඃ- - another Daksha (not Daksha Prajaapati); ත්වත්-සේවනං ව්යධිත - Thy worship performed; සර්ග-විවෘද්ධි-කාමඃ - the species to multiply desirous; ආවිර්බභූවිථ තදා - Thou appeared then; ලසත්-අෂ්ට-බාහුඃ- - with eight resplendent arms; තස්මෛ වරං දදිථ - (and) gave the boon; තාං ච වධූම්- - and also that bride; අසික්නීම් - (named) Asikni;
Translation
The son of one of the Prachetas, another Daksha, indeed, desirous of multiplying the progeny, worshipped Thee. Then Thou appeared with eight resplendent arms and gave him a boon and also Asikni as wife.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තස්යාත්මජාස්ත්වයුතමීශ පුනස්සහස්රං
ශ්රීනාරදස්ය වචසා තව මාර්ගමාපුඃ ।
නෛකත්රවාසමෘෂයේ ස මුමෝච ශාපං
භක්තෝත්තමස්ත්වෘෂිරනුග්රහමේව මේනේ ॥2॥
Meaning
තස්ය-ආත්මජාඃ- - his sons; තු-අයුතම්- - indeed ten thousand; ඊශ - O Lord!; පුනඃ-සහස්රං - again (also) one thousand; ශ්රීනාරදස්ය වචසා - by the advice of Shree Naarada; තව මාර්ගම්-ආපුඃ - took to Thy path (of meditation etc); න-ඓකත්ර-වාසම්- - (you) will not be residing in one place; ඍෂයේ - to the sage (Naarada); ස මුමෝච ශාපං - he (Daksha) gave the curse; භක්ත-උත්තමඃ-තු-ඍෂිඃ- - highest of (Thy) devotees, the sage; අනුග්රහම්-ඒව මේනේ - took it for a blessing.;
Translation
His eleven thousand sons, on the advice of Shree Naarada took to the path of devotion to Thee, to attain liberation. Daksha was displeased with Naarada and so pronounced a curse on him that he would not have any fixed place of residence. Sage Naarada, the highest of devotees, considered it only as blessing.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ෂෂ්ට්යා තතෝ දුහිතෘභිඃ සෘජතඃ කුලෞඝාන්
දෞහිත්රසූනුරථ තස්ය ස විශ්වරූපඃ ।
ත්වත්ස්තෝත්රවර්මිතමජාපයදිංද්රමාජෞ
දේව ත්වදීයමහිමා ඛලු සර්වජෛත්රඃ ॥3॥
Meaning
ෂෂ්ට්යා තතඃ දුහිතෘභිඃ - then by ( his) sixty daughters; සෘජතඃ කුල-ඖඝාන් - (he) was multiplying the species; දෞහිත්ර-සූනුඃ-අථ තස්ය - then one of his daughter's son's son; ස විශ්වරූපඃ - that (named) Vishwaroopa; ත්වත්-ස්තෝත්ර-වර්මිතම්- - Thy protective hymn; අජාපයත්-ඉංද්රම්- - made Indra recite; ආජෞ - in a battle; දේව - O Lord!; ත්වදීය-මහිමා - Thy glory; ඛලු සර්වජෛත්රඃ - indeed is victorious over all;
Translation
Then Daksha multiplied the species through his sixty daughters. His daughter's son's son named Vishwaroopa made Indra win the battle against the Asuras. Indra was provided protection and victory by learning from Vishwaroopa the hymn addressed to Thee (Naaraayana Kavacha). O Lord! Thy glory can indeed conquer all.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ප්රාක්ශූරසේනවිෂයේ කිල චිත්රකේතුඃ
පුත්රාග්රහී නෘපතිරංගිරසඃ ප්රභාවාත් ।
ලබ්ධ්වෛකපුත්රමථ තත්ර හතේ සපත්නී-
සංඝෛරමුහ්යදවශස්තව මායයාසෞ ॥4॥
Meaning
ප්රාක්- - once upon a time; ශූරසේන-විෂයේ - in Shoorsena's kingdom; කිල චිත්රකේතුඃ - indeed, Chitraketu; පුත්ර-ආග්රහී නෘපතිඃ - desirous of a son, the king; අංගිරසඃ ප්රභාවාත් - by sage Angirasa's blessings; ලබ්ධ්වා-ඒක-පුත්රම්- - getting one son; අථ තත්ර හතේ සපත්නීසංඝෛඃ- - then, there (the son) was killed by the other wives; අමුහ්යත්-අවශඃ- - and overcome by grief, he fainted; තව මායයා අසෞ - owing to the power of Thy Maayaa;
Translation
Once upon a time, in the kingdom named Shoorsena the king Chitraketu was desirous of getting a son. By the blessings of sage Angirasa he got a son. The child was killed by his other wives out of jealousy. The king fainted with grief owing to the power of Thy Maayaa.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තං නාරදස්තු සමමංගිරසා දයාලුඃ
සංප්රාප්ය තාවදුපදර්ශ්ය සුතස්ය ජීවම් ।
කස්යාස්මි පුත්ර ඉති තස්ය ගිරා විමෝහං
ත්යක්ත්වා ත්වදර්චනවිධෞ නෘපතිං න්යයුංක්ත ॥5॥
Meaning
තං නාරදඃ-තු - him, Naarada then; සමම්-අංගිරසා - along with Angirasa; දයාලුඃ - merciful (Naarada); සංප්රාප්ය - approaching; තාවත්-උපදර්ශ්ය - then showed; සුතස්ය ජීවම් - the son's soul; කස්ය-අස්මි පුත්ර(ඃ) ඉති - whose son am I, thus; තස්ය ගිරා - by his speech; විමෝහං ත්යක්ත්වා - giving up delusion; ත්වත්-අර්චන-විධෞ - in the ways of Thy worship; නෘපතිං න්යයුංක්ත - gave instructions to the king;
Translation
The merciful Naarada and sage Angirasa went to Chitraketu and showed him the soul of his dead son. The soul asked 'whose son am I?' These words dispelled the king's delusion. The sages then instructed him in the ways of Thy worship.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ස්තෝත්රං ච මංත්රමපි නාරදතෝऽථ ලබ්ධ්වා
තෝෂාය ශේෂවපුෂෝ නනු තේ තපස්යන් ।
විද්යාධරාධිපතිතාං ස හි සප්තරාත්රේ
ලබ්ධ්වාප්යකුංඨමතිරන්වභජද්භවංතම් ॥6॥
Meaning
ස්තෝත්රං ච මංත්රම්-අපි - hymns and Mantras; නාරදතඃ-අථ ලබ්ධ්වා - from Naarada then receiving; තෝෂාය ශේෂ-වපුෂඃ - for propitiation of (Thee) (who were) in the form of Aadishesha; නනු තේ තපස්යන් - practising austerities to Thee alone; විද්යාධර-අධිපතිතාං - the leadership of Vidyaadharas; ස හි සප්ත-රාත්රේ ලබ්ධ්වා- - he obtained only in seven days; අපි-අකුංඨමතිඃ- - still dissatisfied; අන්වභජත්-භවංතම් - (he) continued to worship Thee;
Translation
Then receiving hymns and Mantras from Naarada, he practised austerities for propitiating Thee who were in the form of Aadishesha. Within seven days he obtained the leadership of the Vidyaadharas. Still dissatisfied, he continued to worship Thee with the same fervour.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තස්මෛ මෘණාලධවලේන සහස්රශීර්ෂ්ණා
රූපේණ බද්ධනුතිසිද්ධගණාවෘතේන ।
ප්රාදුර්භවන්නචිරතෝ නුතිභිඃ ප්රසන්නෝ
දත්වාऽऽත්මතත්ත්වමනුගෘහ්ය තිරෝදධාථ ॥7॥
Meaning
තස්මෛ - to him (Chitraketu); මෘණාල-ධවලේන - as white as a lotus stalk; සහස්ර-ශීර්ෂ්ණා - with a thousand heads; රූපේණ - in (such a) form; බද්ධනුති-සිද්ධගණ-ආවෘතේන - singing hymns of praises,by Sidhdhas, surrounded; ප්රාදුර්භවන්-අචිරතඃ - quickly manifested; නුතිභිඃ ප්රසන්නඃ - with the hymns pleased; දත්වා-ආත්ම-තත්ත්වම්- - imparting knowledge of self; අනුගෘහ්ය - and blessing (him); තිරෝදධාථ - Thou disappeared;
Translation
Presently Thou revealed Thyself to him in Thy form of Aadishesha, with a thousand hoods and white like a lotus stalk,surrounded by bands of Sidhdhaas singing hymns of praise. Pleased with the hymns, Thou blessed him and imparted to him the knowledge of the self and then Thou disappeared.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ත්වද්භක්තමෞලිරථ සෝऽපි ච ලක්ෂලක්ෂං
වර්ෂාණි හර්ෂුලමනා භුවනේෂු කාමම් ।
සංගාපයන් ගුණගණං තව සුංදරීභිඃ
සංගාතිරේකරහිතෝ ලලිතං චචාර ॥8॥
Meaning
ත්වත්-භක්ත-මෞලිඃ-අථ ස- - the greatest of devotees ,he, then; අපි ච - and also; ලක්ෂ-ලක්ෂං වර්ෂාණි - for many many years; හර්ෂුල-මනා - happily (blissfully); භුවනේෂු - in all the worlds; කාමං සංගාපයන් - made to be sung; ගුණගණං තව - Thy glories; සුංදරීභිඃ - by beautiful Vidyaadharis; සංග-අතිරේක-රහිතඃ - without much sensuous attachment; ලලිතං චචාර - happily wandered about;
Translation
This great devotee Chitraketu for many many years wandered about happily in all the worlds without much attachment. He led the troupe of beautiful Vidyaadharis and also caused Thy glories and excellences to be sung, to his hearts content.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අත්යංතසංගවිලයාය භවත්ප්රණුන්නෝ
නූනං ස රූප්යගිරිමාප්ය මහත්සමාජේ ।
නිශ්ශංකමංකකෘතවල්ලභමංගජාරිං
තං ශංකරං පරිහසන්නුමයාභිශේපේ ॥9॥
Meaning
අත්යංත-සංග-විලයාය - to rid (himself) of all sensuous hankerings; භවත්-ප්රණුන්නඃ නූනං - prompted by Thee, it seems,; ස රූප්යගිරිම්-ආප්ය - he, reaching the Silver mountain (Kailaash); මහත්-සමාජේ - in the assembly of sages; නිශ්ශංකම්- - without any inhibition; අංක-කෘත-වල්ලභම්- - who had seated his consort on his lap; අංගජාරිං තං ශංකරං - the destroyer of Kaamdeva, that Shankara; පරිහසන්- - ridiculing (him); උමයා-අභිශේපේ - was cursed by Umaa;
Translation
To rid himself completely of all sensuous hankerings, prompted by Thee, he once went to Mount Kailaash. There he saw the destroyer of Kaamadeva , Shankara, sitting in the assembly of sages with his consort Umaa seated on his lap without any concern. Chitraketu mocked at him and in turn was cursed by Umaa.

නිස්සංභ්රමස්ත්වයමයාචිතශාපමෝක්ෂෝ
වෘත්රාසුරත්වමුපගම්ය සුරේංද්රයෝධී ।
භක්ත්යාත්මතත්ත්වකථනෛඃ සමරේ විචිත්රං
ශත්රෝරපි භ්රමමපාස්ය ගතඃ පදං තේ ॥10॥
Meaning
නිස්සංභ්රමඃ- - unperturbed; තු-අයම්- - however, he (Chitraketu); අයාචිත-ශාප-මෝක්ෂඃ - did not ask for relief from the curse; වෘත්රාසුරත්වම්-උපගම්ය - as vritraasura being born; සුරේංද්ර-යෝධී - against Indra fighting; භක්ත්යා- - by his devotion; ආත්මතත්ත්ව-කථනෛඃ - and by imparting knowledge of the self; සමරේ - in the battle,; විචිත්රං - surprisingly,; ශත්රෝඃ-අපි භ්රමම්- - the delusion of the enemy also; අපාස්ය - removing; ගතඃ පදං තේ - reached Thy abode;
Translation
Unperturbed, Chitraketu did not ask for relief from the curse, and was born as Vritraasura. By his devotion, while fighting in the battle against Indra, he imparted the knowledge of the self to Indra and he removed the delusion of even his enemy. Thereby he reached Thy abode. What a wonder!
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ත්වත්සේවනේන දිතිරිංද්රවධෝද්යතාऽපි
තාන්ප්රත්යුතේංද්රසුහෘදෝ මරුතෝऽභිලේභේ ।
දුෂ්ටාශයේऽපි ශුභදෛව භවන්නිෂේවා
තත්තාදෘශස්ත්වමව මාං පවනාලයේශ ॥11॥
Meaning
ත්වත්-සේවනේන - by worshipping Thee; දිතිඃ- - Diti; ඉංද්ර-වධ-උද්යතා-අපි - though wanting to kill Indra; තාන්-ප්රත්යුත- - them, instead,; ඉංද්ර-සුහෘදඃ මරුතඃ- - Indra's friends Maruts; අභිලේභේ - begot; දුෂ්ට-ආශයේ-අපි - even for evil mind persons; ශුභදා-ඒව - Thy worship; භවත්-නිෂේවා - gives good only; තත්-තාදෘශඃ-ත්වම්- - Thou who are thus; අව මාං - protect me; පවන-ආලය-ඊශ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Diti, the mother of the Asuras, worshipped Thee in order to have a son who would kill Indra, but instead gave birth to Maruts who became friends of Indra. By worshipping Thee, even an evil minded person receives good only. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are like that, deign to protect me.
