බලසමේතබලානුගතෝ භවාන් පුරමගාහත භීෂ්මකමානිතඃ ।
ද්විජසුතං ත්වදුපාගමවාදිනං ධෘතරසා තරසා ප්රණනාම සා ॥1॥
Meaning
බල-සමේත- - along with an army; බල-අනුගතඃ - by Balaraam followed; භවාන් - (were) Thou; පුරම්-අගාහත - the city of (Kundina) entered; භීෂ්මක-මානිතඃ - Bhishmaka honoured (Thee and Balaraam); ද්විජ-සුතං - to the Braahmin boy; ත්වත්-උපාගම-වාදිනං - who Thy coming had announced; ධෘතරසා තරසා - with joy at once; ප්රණනාම සා - prostrated she (Rukmini);
Translation
Thou were respectfully received along with Balaraam who had followed Thee with an army, by king Bhishmaka, as Thou entered the city of Kundina. Rukmini at once honoured the Braahmin boy with salutations who gave her the news of Thy arrival in the city.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භුවනකාංතමවේක්ෂ්ය භවද්වපුර්නෘපසුතස්ය නිශම්ය ච චේෂ්ටිතම් ।
විපුලඛේදජුෂාං පුරවාසිනාං සරුදිතෛරුදිතෛරගමන්නිශා ॥2॥
Meaning
භුවන-කාංතම්-අවේක්ෂ්ය - in the world most beautiful (Thee) seeing; භවත්-වපුඃ- - Thy form; නෘප-සුතස්ය - the king's son's (Rukmi's); නිශම්ය ච චේෂ්ටිතම් - hearing the effort; විපුල-ඛේද-ජුෂාම් - great sorrow overcome with; පුර-වාසිනාං - the public (of Kundina); සරුදිතෛඃ-උදිතෛඃ- - with tears speaking about; අගමත්-නිශා - spent the night;
Translation
The public of Kundina saw Thy most beautiful form in the world, and heard about the ill effort of Rukmi, the king's son. They were smitten with great sorrow with the state of affairs in the city and spent a sleepless night sadly and tearfully talking about it all.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තදනු වංදිතුමිංදුමුඛී ශිවාං විහිතමංගලභූෂණභාසුරා ।
නිරගමත් භවදර්පිතජීවිතා ස්වපුරතඃ පුරතඃ සුභටාවෘතා ॥3॥
Meaning
තදනු වංදිතුම්- - then to worship; ඉංදුමුඛී ශිවාං - the moon faced (Rukmini), Paarvati; විහිත-මංගල- - adorning auspicious; භූෂණ-භාසුරා - ornaments (and attire) shining; නිරගමත් - came out; භවත්-අර්පිත-ජීවිතා - to Thee having dedicated her life; ස්වපුරතඃ පුරතඃ - of her chambers, in front; සුභට-ආවෘතා - by guards surrounded;
Translation
Then, the next morning, the moon faced beauty Rukmini, who had already dedicated her life to Thee, came out of her chambers to worship Paarvati. She was bedecked with auspicious ornaments and attire and was well surrounded by the guards.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
කුලවධූභිරුපේත්ය කුමාරිකා ගිරිසුතාං පරිපූජ්ය ච සාදරම් ।
මුහුරයාචත තත්පදපංකජේ නිපතිතා පතිතාං තව කේවලම් ॥4॥
Meaning
කුල-වධුභිඃ-උපේත්ය - with the noble women reaching; කුමාරිකා - the princess; ගිරිසුතාං පරිපූජ්ය - Paarvati worshipped with fervour; ච සාදරම් - and with reverence; මුහුඃ-අයාචත - again and again prayed; තත්-පද-පංකජේ - on her lotus feet; නිපතිතා - prostrating; පතිතාං තව කේවලං - as husband Thee only;
Translation
The princess reached the temple of goddess Paarvati in the company of noble women. With great reverence and fervour she worshipped the goddess and prostrated at her feet praying again and again that Thou alone be her husband.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
සමවලෝකකුතූහලසංකුලේ නෘපකුලේ නිභෘතං ත්වයි ච ස්ථිතේ ।
නෘපසුතා නිරගාද්ගිරිජාලයාත් සුරුචිරං රුචිරංජිතදිඞ්මුඛා ॥5॥
Meaning
සමවලෝක- - the sight (of Rukmini); කුතූහල-සංකුලේ - expecting (to see) joyfully gathered; නෘප-කුලේ - the assembly of kings; නිභෘතං ත්වයි - silently aloof when Thou; ච ස්ථිතේ - and were standing; නෘප-සුතා නිරගාත්- - the princess came out; ගිරිජා-ආලයාත් - from goddess Paarvati's temple; සුරුචිරං - in a charming manner; රුචිර-රංජිත- - brilliantly lighting; දික්-මුඛා - the quarters;
Translation
The assembly of kings had gathered joyfully with the expectation to see Rukmini. Thou stood among them in a silently aloof manner. Just then the princess came out of the temple of goddess Paarvati, in a charming manner causing the quarters to light up with her brilliance.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භුවනමෝහනරූපරුචා තදා විවශිතාඛිලරාජකදංබයා ।
ත්වමපි දේව කටාක්ෂවිමෝක්ෂණෛඃ ප්රමදයා මදයාංචකෘෂේ මනාක් ॥6॥
Meaning
භුවන-මෝහන- - the world enchanting; රූප-රුචා තදා - beauty enthralling then; විවශිත-අඛිල- - bewitched the entire; රාජ-කදංබයා - king's assembly; ත්වම්-අපි දේව - Thou also O Lord!; කටාක්ෂ-විමෝක්ෂණෛඃ - by sidelong glances casting; ප්රමදයා - by the enchanting one (Rukmini); මදයාන්-චකෘෂේ - were enchanted; මනාක් - somewhat;
Translation
Then the enthralling beauty Rukmini bewitched the entire assembly of kings gathered there. Thou also, O Lord! Were somewhat enchanted by her as she cast her sidelong glances.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ක්වනු ගමිෂ්යසි චංද්රමුඛීති තාං සරසමේත්ය කරේණ හරන් ක්ෂණාත් ।
සමධිරෝප්ය රථං ත්වමපාහෘථා භුවි තතෝ විතතෝ නිනදෝ ද්විෂාම් ॥7॥
Meaning
ක්වනු ගමිෂ්යසි - where indeed are you going; චංද්රමුඛී-ඉති - O Moon faced one! Thus; තාං සරසම්-ඒත්ය - her quickly reaching; කරේණ හරන් ක්ෂණාත් - by hand leading away instantly; සමධිරෝප්ය රථං - helping her in the chariot; ත්වම්-අපාහෘථා - Thou carried away; භුවි තතඃ විතතඃ - all over the earth then spreading; නිනදඃ ද්විෂාම් - loud protest among the enemies;
Translation
Addressing her admiringly, Thou asked her, 'O moon-faced one! where indeed are you going?' Thou hastily reached her and holding her by her arm Thou led her to the chariot and helping her in it, Thou carried her away. Whereupon there spread a loud protest among Thy rivals.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ක්ව නු ගතඃ පශුපාල ඉති ක්රුධා කෘතරණා යදුභිශ්ච ජිතා නෘපාඃ ।
න තු භවානුදචාල්යත තෛරහෝ පිශුනකෛඃ ශුනකෛරිව කේසරී ॥8॥
Meaning
ක්ව නු ගතඃ - where indeed has he gone; පශුපාල ඉති - the cowherd, thus; ක්රුධා කෘතරණා - enraged (and) fighting; යදුභිඃ-ච - by the Yadus, and; ජිතාඃ-නෘපාඃ - won over, the kings; න තු භවාන්- - not indeed Thou; උදචාල්යත - were to be swayed; තෛඃ-අහෝ - by them, O what a wonder!; පිශුනකෛඃ - the wicked ones; ශුනකෛඃ-ඉව කේසරී - by dogs, just as, the lion;
Translation
Where indeed has he gone, the cowherd?' Thus the enraged kings shouted and put up a fight. They were defeated by the Yaadavas. O what a wonder! Thou were not swayed in the least by the wicked ones, just as the lion is not swayed by the barking of the dogs.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තදනු රුක්මිණමාගතමාහවේ වධමුපේක්ෂ්ය නිබධ්ය විරූපයන් ।
හෘතමදං පරිමුච්ය බලෝක්තිභිඃ පුරමයා රමයා සහ කාංතයා ॥9॥
Meaning
තදනු රුක්මිණම්- - thereafter Rukmi; ආගතම්-ආහවේ - (who had) come for battle; වධම්-උපේක්ෂ්ය - to kill refraining; නිබධ්ය විරූපයන් - binding and disfiguring (him); හෘත-මදම් - humbling (his) pride; පරිමුච්ය - (then) releasing (him); බල-උක්තිභිඃ - by Balaraam's direction; පුරම්-අයාඃ - came to town; රමයා සහ කාංතයා - with Ramaa (Thy) wife (Rukmini);
Translation
Rukmi then came to battle with Thee. Refraining to kill him, Thou bound him and disfigured him and thus humbled his pride. At the instance of Balaraama Thou released him of his bondage and returned to Thy city Dwaarkaa with Thy wife Rukmini who was Ramaa (Laxmi) herself.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
නවසමාගමලජ්ජිතමානසාං ප්රණයකෞතුකජෘංභිතමන්මථාම් ।
අරමයඃ ඛලු නාථ යථාසුඛං රහසි තාං හසිතාංශුලසන්මුඛීම් ॥10॥
Meaning
නව-සමාගම - newness of being with her husband; ලජ්ජිත-මානසාම් - with a shy mind; ප්රණය-කෞතුක- - love and joy; ජෘංභිත-මන්මථාම් - increasing the passion; අරමයඃ ඛලු - sported (Thou) indeed; නාථ - O Lord!; යථා-සුඛං - so as to (make her) happy; රහසි තාං - in private, her; හසිත-අංශුල-සන්මුඛීම් - smile rays brightening her face;
Translation
Rukmini was shyly caught between the new experience of being with her husband and the increased passion caused by the joy of experiencing love. O Lord! Thou sported with her in privacy so as to delight her whose face was beaming with the rays of her smile.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
විවිධනර්මභිරේවමහර්නිශං ප්රමදමාකලයන් පුනරේකදා ।
ඍජුමතේඃ කිල වක්රගිරා භවාන් වරතනෝරතනෝදතිලෝලතාම් ॥11॥
Meaning
විවිධ-නර්මභිඃ- - by various jokes; ඒවම්-අහඃ-නිශම් - thus day and night; ප්රමදම්-ආකලයන් - delight creating; පුනඃ-ඒකදා - again one day; ඍජු-මතේඃ - simple minded (her); කිල වක්ර-ගිරා - certainly with doubtful words; භවාන් - Thou; වර-තනෝඃ-අතනෝත්- - for the beautiful one created; අති-ලෝලතාම් - severe agitation;
Translation
Day and night Thou delighted the beautiful Rukmini by various jokes and pleasant talks. Then one day, by Thy doubtful words the simple minded one was very much agitated.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තදධිකෛරථ ලාලනකෞශලෛඃ ප්රණයිනීමධිකං සුඛයන්නිමාම් ।
අයි මුකුංද භවච්චරිතානි නඃ ප්රගදතාං ගදතාංතිමපාකුරු ॥12॥
Meaning
තත්-අධිකෛඃ-අථ - then more than before; ලාලන-කෞශලෛඃ - by affection expertises; ප්රණයිනීම්-අධිකං - the beloved, evermore; සුඛයන්-ඉමාම් - delighting her; අයි මුකුංද - O Bestower of liberation!; භවත්-චරිතානි - Thy excellences; නඃ ප්රගදතාං - we narrating; ගද-තාංතිම්-අපාකුරු - (our) disease causing sufferings do remove;
Translation
More than ever before by Thy affectionate expertises Thou delighted this Thy beloved even more. O Bestower of Liberation! Liberate me from the sufferings caused by the disease, who is always narrating Thy excellences.
