ශක්රේණ සංයති හතෝऽපි බලිර්මහාත්මා
ශුක්රේණ ජීවිතතනුඃ ක්රතුවර්ධිතෝෂ්මා ।
වික්රාංතිමාන් භයනිලීනසුරාං ත්රිලෝකීං
චක්රේ වශේ ස තව චක්රමුඛාදභීතඃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ශක්රේණ සංයති හතඃ-අපි - by Indra, in the battle even though killed; බලිඃ-මහාත්මා - Bali, the high souled; ශුක්රේණ ජීවිත-තනුඃ - by Shukraachaarya was revived whose body; ක්රතු-වර්ධිත-උෂ්මා - and whose strength had increased by performing Vishwajit Yagna; වික්රාංතිමාන් - valorous (Bali); භය-නිලීන-සුරාං - the Devas having hidden due to fear; ත්රිලෝකීං - in the three worlds; චක්රේ වශේ ස - he conquered (the three worlds); තව චක්ර-මුඛාත්-අභීතඃ - he who was, of the striking of Thy discus not afraid of;
Translation
The high souled Bali was killed in the battle by Indra, but his body was revived by Shukraachaarya. By performing the Vishwajit Sacrifice he grew in prowess and being a descendent of Prahlaad, he was not afraid of Thy discus. So Devas had to flee in fear of the victorious Bali who conquered the three worlds where the Devas had hid themselves.

පුත්රාර්තිදර්ශනවශාදදිතිර්විෂණ්ණා
තං කාශ්යපං නිජපතිං ශරණං ප්රපන්නා ।
ත්වත්පූජනං තදුදිතං හි පයෝව්රතාඛ්යං
සා ද්වාදශාහමචරත්ත්වයි භක්තිපූර්ණා ॥2॥
Meaning
පුත්ර-ආර්ති-දර්ශන-වශාත්- - the plight of her sons seeing; අදිති-විෂණ්ණා - Aditi was tormented; තං කාශ්යපං නිජ-පතිං - to Kaashyapa, her husband, approached; ශරණං ප්රපන්නා - for help; ත්වත්-පූජනං තත්-උදිතං - Thy worship, as advised by him; හි පයෝව්රත-ආඛ්යං - indeed known as Payovrata; සා ද්වාදශ-ආහම්-අචරත්- - she, for twelve days performed; ත්වයි භක්ති-පූර්ණා - to Thee full of devotion;
Translation
Aditi was very much tormented on seeing the plight of her sons the Devas. She approached her husband Kaashyapa for help. He advised her to observe the Payovrata worship unto Thee. She performed it for twelve days with full devotion to Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තස්යාවධෞ ත්වයි නිලීනමතේරමුෂ්යාඃ
ශ්යාමශ්චතුර්භුජවපුඃ ස්වයමාවිරාසීඃ ।
නම්රාං ච තාමිහ භවත්තනයෝ භවේයං
ගෝප්යං මදීක්ෂණමිති ප්රලපන්නයාසීඃ ॥3॥
Meaning
තස්ය-අවධෞ - at the end of the (worship); ත්වයි නිලීන-මතේඃ-අමුෂ්යාඃ - whose mind was fixed on Thee, in front of her; ශ්යාමඃ-චතුර්භුජ-වපුඃ - with a blue complexion and a four armed form; ස්වයම්-ආවිරාසීඃ - Thou Thyself manifested; නම්රාං ච තාම්-ඉහ - as she was bowing to Thee, here, to her; භවත්-තනයඃ භවේයං - 'I shall be born as your son; ගෝප්යං මත්-ඊක්ෂණම්-ඉති - secret may my meeting be', thus; ප්රලපන් - saying; අයාසීඃ - Thou disappeared;
Translation
At the end of the worship, Thou with four arms and blue complexion appeared in front of her whose mind was fixed on Thee.There , at that moment, when she was bowing to Thee, Thou told her that Thou would be born as her son. Thou also charged her to let the meeting be a secret and then Thou disappeared.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ත්වං කාශ්යපේ තපසි සන්නිදධත්තදානීං
ප්රාප්තෝऽසි ගර්භමදිතේඃ ප්රණුතෝ විධාත්රා ।
ප්රාසූත ච ප්රකටවෛෂ්ණවදිව්යරූපං
සා ද්වාදශීශ්රවණපුණ්යදිනේ භවංතම් ॥4॥
Meaning
ත්වං - Thou; කාශ්යපේ තපසි - in Kaasyapa the sage; සන්නිදධත්- - entered (in seed form); තදානීං - at that time; ප්රාප්තඃ-අසි - did enter; ගර්භම්-අදිතේඃ - in the womb of Aditi; ප්රණුතඃ විධාත්රා - (and Thou were) praised by Brahmaa; ප්රාසූත ච - and (she Aditi) gave birth (to Thee) to; ප්රකට-වෛෂ්ණව-දිව්ය-රූපං - with evident marks of Vishnu, a divine form; සා - she; ද්වාදශී-ශ්රවණ-පුණ්ය-දිනේ - on the confluence of Dvaadashi and Shraavana, the sacred days; භවංතම් - Thee;
Translation
Then placing Thyself in Kaashyapa's austerity bourn seed, Thou entered into Aditi's womb. Praised by Brahmaa Thou were delivered as a divine child with evident marks of Vishnu's glory, on the auspicious day of the confluence of Dvaadashi and Shraavana Nakshatra.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
පුණ්යාශ්රමං තමභිවර්ෂති පුෂ්පවර්ෂෛ-
ර්හර්ෂාකුලේ සුරගණේ කෘතතූර්යඝෝෂේ ।
බධ්වාऽංජලිං ජය ජයේති නුතඃ පිතෘභ්යාං
ත්වං තත්ක්ෂණේ පටුතමං වටුරූපමාධාඃ ॥5॥
Meaning
පුණ්ය-ආශ්රමං තම්- - that holy hermitage; අභිවර්ෂති පුෂ්ප-වර්ෂෛඃ- - (when It was) being showered with flowers; හර්ෂ-ආකුලේ සුරගණේ - by the Devas who were full of great joy; කෘත-තූර්ය-ඝෝෂේ - and were sounding the trumpets; බධ්වා-අංජලිං - with folded hands; ජය ජය ඉති - Hail,hail', thus; නුතඃ පිතෘභ්යාං - saluted by Thy parents; ත්වං තත්-ක්ෂණේ - Thou immediately; පටුතමං වටු-රූපම්- - a talented and handsome Brahmachaarin form; ආධාඃ - (Thou) assumed;
Translation
The Devas in great joy were showering flowers on that hermitage where Thou were born and were blowing trumpets. Thy Parents were praising Thee with folded hands, just then Thou took on the form of a talented handsome Brahmachaarin.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තාවත්ප්රජාපතිමුඛෛරුපනීය මෞංජී-
දංඩාජිනාක්ෂවලයාදිභිරර්ච්යමානඃ ।
දේදීප්යමානවපුරීශ කෘතාග්නිකාර්ය-
ස්ත්වං ප්රාස්ථිථා බලිගෘහං ප්රකෘතාශ්වමේධම් ॥6॥
Meaning
තාවත්- - then; ප්රජාපතිමුඛෛඃ- - by Prajaapati Kaashyapa and others; උපනීය - being adorned with; මෞංජී-දංඩ-අජින-අක්ෂ-වලය-ආදිභිඃ- - the sacred thread, staff, deer skin, a garland of beads etc.,; අර්ච්යමානඃ - and being worshipped; දේදීප්යමාන-වපුඃ- - with a resplendent form; ඊශ - O Lord!; කෘත-අග්නි-කාර්යඃ- - having performed the rites with the sacred fire; ත්වං - Thou; ප්රාස්ථිථා - departed for; බලි-ගෘහං - Bali's house; ප්රකෘත-අශ්ව-මේධම් - where, was being performed the Ashvamedha Yanjya;
Translation
Kaashyapa Prajaapati and others adorned Thee with the sacred thread, staff, deer skin, and a garland of beads. O Lord! Being conferred upon, and worshipped,Thou performed the rites with the sacred fire and with Thy resplendent form departed for the house of Bali where the Ashvamedha Yanjya was being performed.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ගාත්රේණ භාවිමහිමෝචිතගෞරවං ප්රා-
ග්ව්යාවෘණ්වතේව ධරණීං චලයන්නායාසීඃ ।
ඡත්රං පරෝෂ්මතිරණාර්ථමිවාදධානෝ
දංඩං ච දානවජනේෂ්විව සන්නිධාතුම් ॥7॥
Meaning
ගාත්රේණ - with (Thy) body; භාවි-මහිමා-උචිත-ගෞරවං - subsequent (manifestation of the ) might befitting the majesty; ප්රාක්- - beforehand (in advance); ව්යාවෘණ්වතා-ඉව - as if showing; ධරණීං චලයන්- - shaking the earth; ආයාසීඃ - (Thou) went; ඡත්රං - the umbrella (holding); පර-උෂ්මති-රණ-අර්ථම්-ඉව - as if to ward off the heat of aggressiveness of all opponents; ආදධානඃ - holding; දංඩං ච - the staff also; දානව-ජනේෂු-ඉව - on the Asura people as though; සන්නිධාතුම් - to apply;
Translation
As Thou marched forth, Thy body's weight shook the earth, indicating the subsequent manifestation of the might befitting the majesty. Thou held an umbrella as if to ward off the heat of the aggressiveness of all opponents, and carried a staff as though to apply it on the Asura people.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තාං නර්මදෝත්තරතටේ හයමේධශාලා-
මාසේදුෂි ත්වයි රුචා තව රුද්ධනේත්රෛඃ ।
භාස්වාන් කිමේෂ දහනෝ නු සනත්කුමාරෝ
යෝගී නු කෝऽයමිති ශුක්රමුඛෛශ්ශශංකේ ॥8॥
Meaning
තාං - that; නර්මදා-උත්තරතටේ - on the northern bank of the Narmadaa (river); හයමේධ-ශාලාම්- - (that) venue of the Ashvamedha Yanjya; ආසේදුෂි ත්වයි - when Thou reached; රුචා තව - by Thy brilliance; රුද්ධ-නේත්රෛඃ - with their eyes dazzled; භාස්වාන් කිම්-ඒෂ - Is this Sun?'; දහනඃ නු - or Agni?'; සනත්කුමාරඃ යෝගී නු - or Yogi Sanatkumaara?'; කඃ-අයම්-ඉති - who is this?'; ශුක්රමුඛෛඃ- - by Shukra and others; ශශංකේ - it was doubted;
Translation
Thou reached the venue of the Ashvamedha Yanjya on the northern bank of the Narmadaa river. By Thy brilliance the eyes of Shukra and others were dazzled and they wondered if it was the Sun or Agni or the Sage Sanat Kumaara, who was he?
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ආනීතමාශු භෘගුභිර්මහසාऽභිභූතෛ-
ස්ත්වාං රම්යරූපමසුරඃ පුලකාවෘතාංගඃ ।
භක්ත්යා සමේත්ය සුකෘතී පරිණිජ්ය පාදෞ
තත්තෝයමන්වධෘත මූර්ධනි තීර්ථතීර්ථම් ॥9॥
Meaning
ආනීතම්-ආශු - received (and admitted) quickly; භෘගුභිඃ- - by Shukraachaarya and others; මහසා-අභිභූතෛඃ- - very much overwhelmed by Thy majestic and charming form; ත්වාං රම්යරූපම්- - Thee of charming appearance; අසුරඃ පුලක-ආවෘත-අංගඃ - the Asura Bali with a thrilled body; භක්ත්යා සමේත්ය - with devotion approached; සුකෘතී - who had done noble deeds; පරිණිජ්ය පාදෞ - washed Thy feet; තත්-තෝයම්-අන්වධෘත - and that water sprinkled; මූර්ධනි - on his head; තීර්ථ-තීර්ථම් - the holiest of the holy (water);
Translation
Bhrigu and others who were overwhelmed by Thy majestic charm received Thee quickly. The thrilled Asura Bali, with devotion, approached Thee of charming appearance. Asura Bali, who had done noble deeds, washed Thy feet and sprinkled that holiest of the holy waters on his head.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ප්රහ්ලාදවංශජතයා ක්රතුභිර්ද්විජේෂු
විශ්වාසතෝ නු තදිදං දිතිජෝऽපි ලේභේ ।
යත්තේ පදාංබු ගිරිශස්ය ශිරෝභිලාල්යං
ස ත්වං විභෝ ගුරුපුරාලය පාලයේථාඃ ॥10॥
Meaning
ප්රහ්ලාද-වංශජතයා - in the line of Prahlaad being born; ක්රතුභිඃ- - having performed sacrifices; ද්විජේෂු විශ්වාසතඃ නු - or because of his faith in holy men; තත්-ඉදං - that this; ද්තිජඃ-අපි ලේභේ - the son of Diti (the Asura Bali) also got; යත්-තේ පද-අංබු - that water from Thy feet; ගිරිශස්ය ශිරඃ-අභිලාල්යං - which is meant to sanctify the head of Shiva; ස ත්වං විභෝ - That Thou O Lord!; ගුරුපුර-ආලය - who resides in Guruvaayur; පාලයේථා - please protect me;
Translation
The son of Diti, the Asura Bali, was very fortunate, by the glory of being born in the line of Prahlaad, or by having performed sacrifices,or by his faith in and service to holy men, to get this holy water from Thy feet. O Lord! This water is meant to sanctify Shiva's head. O Thou! Who resides in Guruvaayur! please protect me.
