ධෘතරාෂ්ට්ර උවාච
ධර්මක්ෂේත්රේ කුරුක්ෂේත්රේ සමවේතා යුයුත්සවඃ ।
මාමකාඃ පාංඩවාශ්චෛව කිමකුර්වත සංජය ॥ 1 ॥
Meaning
ධෘතරාෂ්ට්රඃ උවාච — King Dhritarāṣṭra said; ධර්ම-ක්ෂේත්රේ — in the place of pilgrimage; කුරු-ක්ෂේත්රේ — in the place named Kurukṣetra; සමවේතාඃ — assembled; යුයුත්සවඃ — desiring to fight; මාමකාඃ — my party (sons); පාංඩවාඃ — the sons of Pāṇḍu; ච — and; ඒව — certainly; කිම් — what; අකුර්වත — did they do; සංජය — O Sañjaya.
Translation
Dhritarāṣṭra said: O Sañjaya, after my sons and the sons of Pāṇḍu assembled in the place of pilgrimage at Kurukṣetra, desiring to fight, what did they do?
ශ්ලෝකඃ
සංජය උවාච
දෘෂ්ට්වා තු පාංඩවානීකං ව්යූඪං දුර්යෝධනස්තදා ।
ආචාර්යමුපසංගම්ය රාජා වචනමබ්රවීත් ॥ 2 ॥
Meaning
සංජයඃ උවාච — Sañjaya said; දෘෂ්ට්වා — after seeing; තු — but; පාංඩව-අනීකම් — the soldiers of the Pāṇḍavas; ව්යූඪම් — arranged in a military phalanx; දුර්යෝධනඃ — King Duryodhana; තදා — at that time; ආචාර්යම් — the teacher; උපසංගම්ය — approaching; රාජා — the king; වචනම් — words; අබ්රවීත් — spoke.
Translation
Sañjaya said: O King, after looking over the army arranged in military formation by the sons of Pāṇḍu, King Duryodhana went to his teacher and spoke the following words.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
පශ්යෛතාං පාංඩුපුත්රාණාමාචාර්ය මහතීං චමූම් ।
ව්යූඪාං ද්රුපදපුත්රේණ තව ශිෂ්යේණ ධීමතා ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning

Translation
O my teacher, behold the great army of the sons of Pāṇḍu, so expertly arranged by your intelligent disciple the son of Drupada.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අත්ර ශූරා මහේෂ්වාසා භීමාර්ජුනසමා යුධි ।
යුයුධානෝ විරාටශ්ච ද්රුපදශ්ච මහාරථඃ ॥ 4 ॥

අත්ර — here; ශූරාඃ — heroes; මහා-ඉෂු-ආසාඃ — mighty bowmen; භීම-අර්ජුන — to Bhīma and Arjuna; සමාඃ — equal; යුධි — in the fight; යුයුධානඃ — Yuyudhāna; විරාටඃ — Virāṭa; ච — also; ද්රුපදඃ — Drupada; ච — also; මහා-රථඃ — great fighter.
Translation
Here in this army are many heroic bowmen equal in fighting to Bhīma and Arjuna: great fighters like Yuyudhāna, Virāṭa and Drupada.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ධෘෂ්ටකේතුශ්චේකිතානඃ කාශිරාජශ්ච වීර්යවාන් ।
පුරුජිත්කුංතිභෝජශ්ච ශෛබ්යශ්ච නරපුංගවඃ ॥ 5 ॥
Meaning
ධෘෂ්ටකේතුඃ — Dhriṣṭaketu; චේකිතානඃ — Cekitāna; කාශිරාජඃ — Kāśirāja; ච — also; වීර්ය-වාන් — very powerful; පුරුජිත් — Purujit; කුංතිභෝජඃ — Kuntibhoja; ච — and; ශෛබ්යඃ — Śaibya; ච — and; නර-පුංගවඃ — hero in human society.
Translation
There are also great heroic, powerful fighters like Dhriṣṭaketu, Cekitāna, Kāśirāja, Purujit, Kuntibhoja and Śaibya.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
යුධාමන්යුශ්ච වික්රාංත උත්තමෞජාශ්ච වීර්යවාන් ।
සෞභද්රෝ ද්රෞපදේයාශ්ච සර්ව ඒව මහාරථාඃ ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
යුධාමන්යුඃ — Yudhāmanyu; ච — and; වික්රාංතඃ — mighty; උත්තමෞජාඃ — Uttamaujā; ච — and; වීර්ය-වාන් — very powerful; සෞභද්රඃ — the son of Subhadrā; ද්රෞපදේයාඃ — the sons of Draupadī; ච — and; සර්වේ — all; ඒව — certainly; මහා-රථාඃ — great chariot fighters.
Translation
There are the mighty Yudhāmanyu, the very powerful Uttamaujā, the son of Subhadrā and the sons of Draupadī. All these warriors are great chariot fighters.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අස්මාකං තු විශිෂ්ටා යේ තාන්නිබෝධ ද්විජෝත්තම ।
නායකා මම සෛන්යස්ය සංජ්ඤාර්ථ තාන්බ්රවීමි තේ ॥ 7 ॥
Meaning
අස්මාකම් — our; තු — but; විශිෂ්ටාඃ — especially powerful; යේ — who; තාන් — them; නිබෝධ — just take note of, be informed; ද්විජ-උත්තම — O best of the brāhmaṇas; නායකාඃ — captains; මම — my; සෛන්යස්ය — of the soldiers; සංජ්ඤා-අර්ථම් — for information; තාන් — them; බ්රවීමි — I am speaking; තේ — to you.
Translation
But for your information, O best of the brāhmaṇas, let me tell you about the captains who are especially qualified to lead my military force.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භවාන්භීෂ්මශ්ච කර්ණශ්ච කෘපශ්ච සමිතිංජයඃ ।
අශ්වත්ථාමා විකර්ණශ්ච සෞමදත්තිස්තථෛව ච ॥ 8 ॥
Meaning
භවාන් — your good self; භීෂ්මඃ — Grandfather Bhīṣma; ච — also; කර්ණඃ — Karṇa; ච — and; කෘපඃ — Kripa; ච — and; සමිතිම්-ජයඃ — always victorious in battle; අශ්වත්ථාමා — Aśvatthāmā; විකර්ණඃ — Vikarṇa; ච — as well as; සෞමදත්තිඃ — the son of Somadatta; තථා — as well as; ඒව — certainly; ච — also.
Translation
There are personalities like you, Bhīṣma, Karṇa, Kripa, Aśvatthāmā, Vikarṇa and the son of Somadatta called Bhūriśravā, who are always victorious in battle.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අන්යේ ච බහවඃ ශූරා මදර්ථේ ත්යක්තජීවිතාඃ ।
නානාශස්ත්රප්රහරණාඃ සර්වේ යුද්ධවිශාරදාඃ ॥ 9 ॥
Meaning
අන්යේ — others; ච — also; බහවඃ — in great numbers; ශූරාඃ — heroes; මත්-අර්ථේ — for my sake; ත්යක්ත-ජීවිතාඃ — prepared to risk life; නානා — many; ශස්ත්ර — weapons; ප්රහරණාඃ — equipped with; සර්වේ — all of them; යුද්ධ-විශාරදාඃ — experienced in military science.
Translation
There are many other heroes who are prepared to lay down their lives for my sake. All of them are well equipped with different kinds of weapons, and all are experienced in military science.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අපර්යාප්ත‍ං තදස්මාකං බලං භීෂ්මාභිරක්ෂිතම් ।
පර්යාප්ත‍ං ත්විදමේතේෂාං බලං භීමාභිරක්ෂිතම් ॥ 10 ॥
Meaning
අපර්යාප්තම් — immeasurable; තත් — that; අස්මාකම් — of ours; බලම් — strength; භීෂ්ම — by Grandfather Bhīṣma; අභිරක්ෂිතම් — perfectly protected; පර්යාප්තම් — limited; තු — but; ඉදම් — all this; ඒතේෂාම් — of the Pāṇḍavas; බලම් — strength; භීම — by Bhīma; අභිරක්ෂිතම් — carefully protected.
Translation
Our strength is immeasurable, and we are perfectly protected by Grandfather Bhīṣma, whereas the strength of the Pāṇḍavas, carefully protected by Bhīma, is limited.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අයනේෂු ච සර්වේෂු යථාභාගවමස්ථිතාඃ ।
භීෂ්මමේවාභිරක්ෂංතු භවංතඃ සර්ව ඒව හි ॥ 11 ॥
Meaning
අයනේෂු — in the strategic points; ච — also; සර්වේෂු — everywhere; යථා-භාගම් — as differently arranged; අවස්ථිතාඃ — situated; භීෂ්මම් — unto Grandfather Bhīṣma; ඒව — certainly; අභිරක්ෂංතු — should give support; භවංතඃ — you; සර්වේ — all respectively; ඒව හි — certainly.
Translation
All of you must now give full support to Grandfather Bhīṣma, as you stand at your respective strategic points of entrance into the phalanx of the army.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තස්ය සංජනයන්හර්ෂං කුරුවෘද්ධඃ පිතාමහඃ ।
සිංහනාදං විනද්යෝච්ච‍ඓඃ ශංඛං දධ්මෞ ප්රතාපවාන් ॥ 12 ॥
Meaning
තස්ය — his; සංජනයන් — increasing; හර්ෂම් — cheerfulness; කුරු-වෘද්ධඃ — the grandsire of the Kuru dynasty (Bhīṣma); පිතාමහඃ — the grandfather; සිංහ-නාදම් — roaring sound, like that of a lion; විනද්ය — vibrating; උච්චෛඃ — very loudly; ශංඛම් — conchshell; දධ්මෞ — blew; ප්රතාප-වාන් — the valiant.
Translation
Then Bhīṣma, the great valiant grandsire of the Kuru dynasty, the grandfather of the fighters, blew his conchshell very loudly, making a sound like the roar of a lion, giving Duryodhana joy.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තතඃ ශංඛාශ්ච භේර්යශ්ච පණවානකගෝමුඛාඃ ।
සහසෛවාභ්යහන්යංත ස ශබ්දස්තුමුලෝऽභවත් ॥ 13 ॥
Meaning
තතඃ — thereafter; ශංඛාඃ — conchshells; ච — also; භේර්යඃ — large drums; ච — and; පණව-ආනක — small drums and kettledrums; ගෝ-මුඛාඃ — horns; සහසා — all of a sudden; ඒව — certainly; අභ්යහන්යංත — were simultaneously sounded; සඃ — that; ශබ්දඃ — combined sound; තුමුලඃ — tumultuous; අභවත් — became.
Translation
After that, the conchshells, drums, bugles, trumpets and horns were all suddenly sounded, and the combined sound was tumultuous.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තතඃ ශ්වේතෛර්හයෛර්යුක්තේ මහති ස්යංදනේ ස්ථිතෞ ।
මාධවඃ පාංඩවශ්චෛව දිව්යෞ ශංඛෞ ප්රදධ්මතුඃ ॥ 14 ॥
Meaning
තතඃ — thereafter; ශ්වේතෛඃ — with white; හයෛඃ — horses; යුක්තේ — being yoked; මහති — in a great; ස්යංදනේ — chariot; ස්ථිතෞ — situated; මාධවඃ — Kriṣṇa (the husband of the goddess of fortune); පාංඩවඃ — Arjuna (the son of Pāṇḍu); ච — also; ඒව — certainly; දිව්යෞ — transcendental; ශංඛෞ — conchshells; ප්රදධ්මතුඃ — sounded.
Translation
On the other side, both Lord Kriṣṇa and Arjuna, stationed on a great chariot drawn by white horses, sounded their transcendental conchshells.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
පාංචජන්යං හෘෂීකේශෝ දේවදත්තං ධනංජයඃ ।
පෞංඩ්රං දධ්මෞ මහාශංඛං භීමකර්මා වෘකෝදරඃ ॥ 15 ॥
Meaning
පාංචජන්යම් — the conchshell named Pāñcajanya; හෘෂීක-ඊශඃ — Hriṣīkeśa (Kriṣṇa, the Lord who directs the senses of the devotees); දේවදත්තම් — the conchshell named Devadatta; ධනම්-ජයඃ — Dhanañjaya (Arjuna, the winner of wealth); පෞංඩ්රම් — the conch named Pauṇḍra; දධ්මෞ — blew; මහා-ශංඛම් — the terrific conchshell; භීම-කර්මා — one who performs herculean tasks; වෘක-උදරඃ — the voracious eater (Bhīma).
Translation
Lord Kriṣṇa blew His conchshell, called Pāñcajanya; Arjuna blew his, the Devadatta; and Bhīma, the voracious eater and performer of herculean tasks, blew his terrific conchshell, called Pauṇḍra.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අනංතවිජයං රාජා කුංතීපුත්රෝ යුධිෂ්ඨිරඃ ।
නකුලඃ සහදේවශ්ච සුඝෝෂමණිපුෂ්පකෞ ॥ 16 ॥

Translation
King Yudhiṣṭhira, the son of Kuntī, blew his conchshell, the Ananta-vijaya, and Nakula and Sahadeva blew the Sughoṣa and Maṇipuṣpaka. That great archer the King of Kāśī, the great fighter Śikhaṇḍī, Dhriṣṭadyumna, Virāṭa, the unconquerable Sātyaki, Drupada, the sons of Draupadī, and others, O King, such as the mighty-armed son of Subhadrā, all blew their respective conchshells.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ස ඝෝෂෝ ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රාණාං හෘදයානි ව්යදාරයත් ।
නභශ්ච පෘථිවීං චෛව තුමුලෝऽභ්යනුනාදයන් ॥ 19 ॥

Translation
The blowing of these different conchshells became uproarious. Vibrating both in the sky and on the earth, it shattered the hearts of the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අථ ව්යවස්ථිතාංදෘෂ්ට්වා ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රාන්කපිධ්වජඃ ।
ප්රවෘත්තේ ශස්ත්රසංපාතේ ධනුරුද්යම්ය පාංඩවඃ ।
හෘෂීකේශං තදා වාක්යමිදමාහ මහීපතේ ॥ 20 ॥
Meaning

Translation
At that time Arjuna, the son of Pāṇḍu, seated in the chariot bearing the flag marked with Hanumān, took up his bow and prepared to shoot his arrows. O King, after looking at the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra drawn in military array, Arjuna then spoke to Lord Kriṣṇa these words.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අර්ජුන උවාච
සේනයෝරුභයෝර්මධ්යේ රථං ස්ථාපය මේऽච්යුත ।
යාවදේතාන්නිරීක්ෂේऽහං යෝද්‍ධුකාමානවස්ථිතාන් ॥ 21 ॥
කෛර්මයා සහ යෝද්ධව්යමස්මින්‍රණසමුද්යමේ ॥ 22 ॥

Translation
Arjuna said: O infallible one, please draw my chariot between the two armies so that I may see those present here, who desire to fight, and with whom I must contend in this great trial of arms.

යෝත්ස්යමානානවේක්ෂේऽහං ය ඒතේऽත්ර සමාගතාඃ ।
ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රස්ය දුර්බුද්ධේර්යුද්ධේ ප්රියචිකීර්ෂවඃ ॥ 23 ॥
Meaning
යෝත්ස්යමානාන් — those who will be fighting; අවේක්ෂේ — let me see; අහම් — I; යේ — who; ඒතේ — those; අත්ර — here; සමාගතාඃ — assembled; ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රස්ය — for the son of Dhritarāṣṭra; දුර්බුද්ධේඃ — evil-minded; යුද්ධේ — in the fight; ප්රිය — well; චිකීර්ෂවඃ — wishing.
Translation
Let me see those who have come here to fight, wishing to please the evil-minded son of Dhritarāṣṭra.

Translation
Sañjaya said: O descendant of Bharata, having thus been addressed by Arjuna, Lord Kriṣṇa drew up the fine chariot in the midst of the armies of both parties.

භීෂ්මද්රෝණප්රමුඛතඃ සර්වේෂාං ච මහීක්ෂිතාම් ।

In the presence of Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the other chieftains of the world, the Lord said, “Just behold, Pārtha, all the Kurus assembled here.”

තත්රාපශ්යත්ස්ථිතාන්පාර්ථඃ පිතॄනථ පිතාමහාන්।
ආචාර්යාන්මාතුලාන්භ්රාතॄන්පුත්රාන්පෞත්රාන්සඛීංස්තථා।
ශ්වශ‍උරාන්සුහෘදශ්චෛව සේනයෝරුභයෝරපි ॥ 26 ॥

Translation
There Arjuna could see, within the midst of the armies of both parties, his fathers, grandfathers, teachers, maternal uncles, brothers, sons, grandsons, friends, and also his fathers-in-law and well-wishers.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තාන්සමීක්ෂ්ය ස කෞංතේයඃ සර්වාන්බංධූනවස්ථිතාන් ।
කෘපයා පරයාවිෂ්ටෝ විෂීදන්නිදමබ්රවීත් ॥ 27 ॥

තාන් — all of them; සමීක්ෂ්ය — after seeing; සඃ — he; කෞංතේයඃ — the son of Kuntī; සර්වාන් — all kinds of; බංධූන් — relatives; අවස්ථිතාන් — situated; කෘපයා — by compassion; පරයා — of a high grade; ආවිෂ්ටඃ — overwhelmed; විෂීදන් — while lamenting; ඉදම් — thus; අබ්රවීත් — spoke.
Translation
When the son of Kuntī, Arjuna, saw all these different grades of friends and relatives, he became overwhelmed with compassion and spoke thus.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අර්ජුන උවාච
දෘෂ්ට්වේමං ස්වජනං කෘෂ්ණ යුයුත්සුං සමුපස්ථිතම් ।
සීදංති මම ගාත්රාණි මුඛං ච පරිශ‍උෂ්යති ॥ 28 ॥
Meaning

Translation
Arjuna said: My dear Kriṣṇa, seeing my friends and relatives present before me in such a fighting spirit, I feel the limbs of my body quivering and my mouth drying up.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
වේපථුශ්ච ශරීරේ මේ රෝමහර්ෂශ්ච ජායතේ ।
ගාංඩීවං ස්රංසතේ හස්තාත්ත්වක්ච‍ඓව පරිදහ්යතේ ॥ 29 ॥
Meaning
වේපථුඃ — trembling of the body; ච — also; ශරීරේ — on the body; මේ — my; රෝම-හර්ෂඃ — standing of hair on end; ච — also; ජායතේ — is taking place; ගාංඩීවම් — the bow of Arjuna; ස්රංසතේ — is slipping; හස්තාත් — from the hand; ත්වක් — skin; ච — also; ඒව — certainly; පරිදහ්යතේ — is burning.
Translation
My whole body is trembling, my hair is standing on end, my bow Gāṇḍīva is slipping from my hand, and my skin is burning.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
න ච ශක්නෝම්යවස්ථාතුං භ්රමතීව ච මේ මනඃ ।
නිමිත්තානි ච පශ්යාමි විපරීතානි කේශව ॥ 30 ॥
Meaning
න — nor; ච — also; ශක්නෝමි — am I able; අවස්ථාතුම් — to stay; භ්රමති — forgetting; ඉව — as; ච — and; මේ — my; මනඃ — mind; නිමිත්තානි — causes; ච — also; පශ්යාමි — I see; විපරීතානි — just the opposite; කේශව — O killer of the demon Keśī (Kriṣṇa).
Translation
I am now unable to stand here any longer. I am forgetting myself, and my mind is reeling. I see only causes of misfortune, O Kriṣṇa, killer of the Keśī demon.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
න ච ශ්රේයෝऽනුපශ්යාමි හත්වා ස්වජනමාහවේ ।
න කාංක්ෂේ විජයං කෘෂ්ණ න ච රාජ්යං සුඛානි ච ॥ 31 ॥
Meaning

Translation
I do not see how any good can come from killing my own kinsmen in this battle, nor can I, my dear Kriṣṇa, desire any subsequent victory, kingdom or happiness.

කිං නෝ රාජ්යේන ගෝවිංද කිං භෝගෛර්ජීවිතේන වා ।
යේෂාමර්ථේ කාඞ්‍‍ක්ෂිතං නෝ රාජ්යං භෝගාඃ සුඛානි ච ॥ 32 ॥
ත ඉමේऽවස්ථිතා යුද්ධේ ප්රාණාංස්ත්යක්ත්වා ධනානි ච ।

Translation
O Govinda, of what avail to us are a kingdom, happiness or even life itself when all those for whom we may desire them are now arrayed on this battlefield? O Madhusūdana, when teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers, maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law and other relatives are ready to give up their lives and properties and are standing before me, why should I wish to kill them, even though they might otherwise kill me? O maintainer of all living entities, I am not prepared to fight with them even in exchange for the three worlds, let alone this earth. What pleasure will we derive from killing the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra?

පාපමේවාශ්රයේදස්මාන්හත්වෛතානාතතායිනඃ ।
තස්මාන්නාර්හා වයං හංතුං ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රාන්සබාංධවාන් ।
ස්වජනං හි කථං හත්වා සුඛිනඃ ස්යාම මාධව ॥ 36 ॥
Meaning
පාපම් — vices; ඒව — certainly; ආශ්රයේත් — must come upon; අස්මාන් — us; හත්වා — by killing; ඒතාන් — all these; ආතතායිනඃ — aggressors; තස්මාත් — therefore; න — never; අර්හාඃ — deserving; වයම් — we; හංතුම් — to kill; ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රාන් — the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra; ස-බාංධවාන් — along with friends; ස්ව-ජනම් — kinsmen; හි — certainly; කථම් — how; හත්වා — by killing; සුඛිනඃ — happy; ස්යාම — will we become; මාධව — O Kriṣṇa, husband of the goddess of fortune.
Translation
Sin will overcome us if we slay such aggressors. Therefore it is not proper for us to kill the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra and our friends. What should we gain, O Kriṣṇa, husband of the goddess of fortune, and how could we be happy by killing our own kinsmen?
ශ්ලෝකඃ
යද්යප්යේතේ න පශ්යංති ලෝභෝපහතචේතසඃ ।
කුලක්ෂයකෘතං දෝෂං මිත්රද්රෝහේ ච පාතකම් ॥ 37 ॥
කථං න ජ්ඤේයමස්මාභිඃ පාපාදස්මන්නිවර්තිතුම් ।
කුලක්ෂයකෘතං දෝෂං ප්රපශ්යද්භ‍ඉර්ජනාර්දන ॥ 38 ॥

යදි — if; අපි — even; ඒතේ — they; න — do not; පශ්යංති — see; ලෝභ — by greed; උපහත — overpowered; චේතසඃ — their hearts; කුල-ක්ෂය — in killing the family; කෘතම් — done; දෝෂම් — fault; මිත්ර-ද්රෝහේ — in quarreling with friends; ච — also; පාතකම් — sinful reactions; කථම් — why; න — should not; ජ්ඤේයම් — be known; අස්මාභිඃ — by us; පාපාත් — from sins; අස්මාත් — these; නිවර්තිතුම් — to cease; කුල-ක්ෂය — in the destruction of a dynasty; කෘතම් — done; දෝෂම් — crime; ප්රපශ්යද්භිඃ — by those who can see; ජනාර්දන — O Kriṣṇa.
Translation
O Janārdana, although these men, their hearts overtaken by greed, see no fault in killing one’s family or quarreling with friends, why should we, who can see the crime in destroying a family, engage in these acts of sin?
ශ්ලෝකඃ
කුලක්ෂයේ ප්රණශ්යංති කුලධර්මාඃ සනාතනාඃ ।
ධර්මේ නෂ්ටේ කුලං කෘත්ස්නමධර්මෝऽභිභවත්යුත ॥ 39 ॥
Meaning
කුල-ක්ෂයේ — in destroying the family; ප්රණශ්යංති — become vanquished; කුල-ධර්මාඃ — the family traditions; සනාතනාඃ — eternal; ධර්මේ — religion; නෂ්ටේ — being destroyed; කුලම් — family; කෘත්ස්නම් — whole; අධර්මඃ — irreligion; අභිභවති — transforms; උත — it is said.
Translation
With the destruction of the dynasty, the eternal family tradition is vanquished, and thus the rest of the family becomes involved in irreligion.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අධර්මාභිභවාත්කෘෂ්ණ ප්රදුෂ්යංති කුලස්ත්රියඃ ।
ස්ත්රීෂු දුෂ්ටාසු වාර්ෂ්ණේය ජායතේ වර්ණසංකරඃ ॥ 40 ॥
Meaning
අධර්ම — irreligion; අභිභවාත් — having become predominant; කෘෂ්ණ — O Kriṣṇa; ප්රදුෂ්යංති — become polluted; කුල-ස්ත්රියඃ — family ladies; ස්ත්රීෂු — by the womanhood; දුෂ්ටාසු — being so polluted; වාර්ෂ්ණේය — O descendant of Vriṣṇi; ජායතේ — comes into being; වර්ණ-සංකරඃ — unwanted progeny.
Translation
When irreligion is prominent in the family, O Kriṣṇa, the women of the family become polluted, and from the degradation of womanhood, O descendant of Vriṣṇi, comes unwanted progeny.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
සංකරෝ නරකායෛව කුලඝ්න‍ආනාං කුලස්ය ච ।
පතංති පිතරෝ හ්යේෂාං ලුප්තපිංඩෝදකක්රියාඃ ॥ 41 ॥
Meaning
සංකරඃ — such unwanted children; නරකාය — make for hellish life; ඒව — certainly; කුල-ඝ්නානාම් — for those who are killers of the family; කුලස්ය — for the family; ච — also; පතංති — fall down; පිතරඃ — forefathers; හි — certainly; ඒෂාම් — of them; ලුප්ත — stopped; පිංඩ — of offerings of food; උදක — and water; ක්රියාඃ — performances.
Translation
An increase of unwanted population certainly causes hellish life both for the family and for those who destroy the family tradition. The ancestors of such corrupt families fall down, because the performances for offering them food and water are entirely stopped.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
දෝෂෛරේතෛඃ කුලඝ්න‍ආනාං වර්ණසංකරකාරකෛඃ ।
උත්සාද්යංතේ ජාතිධර්මාඃ කුලධර්මාශ්ච ශාශ්වතාඃ ॥ 42 ॥
Meaning
දෝෂෛඃ — by such faults; ඒතෛඃ — all these; කුල-ඝ්නානාම් — of the destroyers of the family; වර්ණ-සංකර — of unwanted children; කාරකෛඃ — which are causes; උත්සාද්යංතේ — are devastated; ජාති-ධර්මාඃ — community projects; කුල-ධර්මාඃ — family traditions; ච — also; ශාශ්වතාඃ — eternal.
Translation
By the evil deeds of those who destroy the family tradition and thus give rise to unwanted children, all kinds of community projects and family welfare activities are devastated.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
උත්සන්නකුලධර්මාණාං මනුෂ්යාණාං ජනාර්දන ।
නරකේ නියතං වාසෝ භවතීත්යනුශ‍උශ්රුම ॥ 43 ॥
Meaning
උත්සන්න — spoiled; කුල-ධර්මාණාම් — of those who have the family traditions; මනුෂ්යාණාම් — of such men; ජනාර්දන — O Kriṣṇa; නරකේ — in hell; නියතම් — always; වාසඃ — residence; භවති — it so becomes; ඉති — thus; අනුශුශ්රුම — I have heard by disciplic succession.
Translation
O Kriṣṇa, maintainer of the people, I have heard by disciplic succession that those whose family traditions are destroyed dwell always in hell.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අහෝ බත මහත්පාපං කර්තුං ව්යවසිතා වයම් ।
යද්රාජ්යසුඛලෝභේන හංතුං ස්වජනමුද්යතාඃ ॥ 44 ॥
Meaning
අහෝ — alas; බත — how strange it is; මහත් — great; පාපම් — sins; කර්තුම් — to perform; ව්යවසිතාඃ — have decided; වයම් — we; යත් — because; රාජ්ය-සුඛ-ලෝභේන — driven by greed for royal happiness; හංතුම් — to kill; ස්ව-ජනම් — kinsmen; උද්යතාඃ — trying.
Translation
Alas, how strange it is that we are preparing to commit greatly sinful acts. Driven by the desire to enjoy royal happiness, we are intent on killing our own kinsmen.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
යදි මාමප්රතීකාරමශස්ත්රං ශස්ත්රපාණයඃ ।
ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රා රණේ හන්යුස්තන්මේ ක්ෂේමතරං භවේත් ॥ 45 ॥
Meaning
යදි — even if; මාම් — me; අප්රතීකාරම් — without being resistant; අශස්ත්රම් — without being fully equipped; ශස්ත්ර-පාණයඃ — those with weapons in hand; ධාර්තරාෂ්ට්රාඃ — the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra; රණේ — on the battlefield; හන්යුඃ — may kill; තත් — that; මේ — for me; ක්ෂේම-තරම් — better; භවේත් — would be.
Translation
Better for me if the sons of Dhritarāṣṭra, weapons in hand, were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield.

ඒවමුක්ත්වාර්ජුනඃ සංඛ්යේ රථෝපස්ථ උපාවිශත් ।
විසෘජ්ය සශරං චාපං ශෝකසංවිග්න‍මානසඃ ॥ 46 ॥

Sañjaya said: Arjuna, having thus spoken on the battlefield, cast aside his bow and arrows and sat down on the chariot, his mind overwhelmed with grief.
