ශ්ලෝකඃ
පෘථෝස්තු නප්තා පෘථුධර්මකර්මඨඃ
ප්රාචීනබර්හිර්යුවතෞ ශතද්රුතෞ ।
ප්රචේතසෝ නාම සුචේතසඃ සුතා-
නජීජනත්ත්වත්කරුණාංකුරානිව ॥1॥
Meaning
පෘථෝඃ-තු නප්තා - Prithu's great grand son; පෘථු-ධර්ම-කර්මඨඃ - intensely performing righteous deeds; ප්රාචීනබර්හිඃ- - named Praacheenbarhi; යුවතෞ ශතද්රුතෞ - through young Shatadruti; ප්රචේතසඃ නාම - by the name of Prachetas; සුචේතසඃ සුතාන්- - pure minded sons (ten); අජීජනත්- - gave birth to; ත්වත්-කරුණා-අංකුරාන්-ඉව - like sprouts of Thy compassion embodied;
Translation
Prithu's great grand son Praacheenbarhis, who was reputed for his undertakings for the good of the world had the young lady Shatadruti for his wife. From her, as though sprouts of Thy compassion ,ten noble minded sons were born to him known by the group name of Prachetas.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
පිතුඃ සිසෘක්ෂානිරතස්ය ශාසනාද්-
භවත්තපස්යාභිරතා දශාපි තේ
පයෝනිධිං පශ්චිමමේත්ය තත්තටේ
සරෝවරං සංදදෘශුර්මනෝහරම් ॥2॥
Meaning
පිතුඃ සිසෘක්ෂා-නිරතස්ය - the father who was intent on creation; ශාසනාත්- - by his direction; භවත්-තපස්යා-අභිරතා දශ-අපි තේ - those ten engrossed upon meditating on Thee; පයෝනිධිං පශ්චිමම්-ඒත්ය - going to the western sea; තත්-තටේ සරෝවරං සංදදෘශුඃ- - on its shore saw a lake; මනෝහරං - beautiful;
Translation
Commanded by their father to multiply the species, these ten brothers, being firm believers in the importance of Thy worship, went to the western sea to meditate. On the shore of that sea they saw a beautiful lake.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තදා භවත්තීර්ථමිදං සමාගතෝ
භවෝ භවත්සේවකදර්ශනාදෘතඃ ।
ප්රකාශමාසාද්ය පුරඃ ප්රචේතසා-
මුපාදිශත් භක්තතමස්තව ස්තවම් ॥3॥
Meaning
තදා භවත්-තීර්ථම්-ඉදම් - then this Thy holy lake; සමාගතඃ භවඃ - frequented by Shiva; භවත්-සේවක-දර්ශන-ආදෘතඃ - eager to see Thy devotees; ප්රකාශම්-ආසාද්ය - manifested himself; පුරඃ ප්රචේතසාම්- - before the Prachetas; උපාදිශත් - and taught; භක්තතමඃ- - (himself) a great devotee to (Thee); තව ස්තවං - Thy great hymn;
Translation
Then, Thy greatest devotee, Lord Shiva who is always eager to see Thy devotees, came to this holy lake of Thine and appearing before the Prachetaas, taught them a great hymn in praise of Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ස්තවං ජපංතස්තමමී ජලාංතරේ
භවංතමාසේවිෂතායුතං සමාඃ ।
භවත්සුඛාස්වාදරසාදමීෂ්වියාන්
බභූව කාලෝ ධ්රුවවන්න ශීඝ්රතා ॥4॥
Meaning
ස්තවං ජපංතඃ-තම්-අමී - that hymn singing, these (Prachetaas); ජල-අංතරේ - in the water; භවංතම්-ආසේවිෂත- - on Thee meditated; අයුතං සමාඃ - for ten thousand years; භවත්-සුඛ-ආස්වාද්-රසාත්- - because of the joy they were experiencing in meditating on Thee; අමීෂු- - for them; ඉයාන් බභූව කාලඃ - such a long time passed; ධ්රුවවත්-න ශීඝ්රතා - like Dhruva it did not happen quickly;
Translation
These devotees chanting the hymn, spent ten thousand years in water, in Thy worship and meditation on Thee. For the attainment of the bliss of Thy realisation, they had to spend this long period in austerities unlike Dhruva who got it very quickly.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තපෝභිරේෂාමතිමාත්රවර්ධිභිඃ
ස යජ්ඤහිංසානිරතෝऽපි පාවිතඃ ।
පිතාऽපි තේෂාං ගෘහයාතනාරද-
ප්රදර්ශිතාත්මා භවදාත්මතාං යයෞ ॥5॥
Meaning
තපෝභිඃ-ඒෂාම්- - by their penance; අති-මාත්ර-වර්ධිභිඃ - which was increasing in intensity; ස යජ්ඤ-හිංසා-නිරතඃ-අපි - he, though engaged in killing animals for the sacrifices; පාවිතඃ - became purified; පිතා-අපි තේෂාං - (he) their father; ගෘහයාත-නාරද- - (to whose) house Naarada went; ප්රදර්ශිත-ආත්මා - (from Naarada) obtaining the knowledge of Aatman; භවත්-ආත්මතාං යයෞ - attained to Thee;
Translation
By the increasing strength of their penance, their father Praacheenbarhis also became purified who had slain many animals in the sacrificial fires. Naarada who had gone to his house, gave him the knowledge of Aatman by which he attained a form like Thine.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
කෘපාබලේනෛව පුරඃ ප්රචේතසාං
ප්රකාශමාගාඃ පතගේංද්රවාහනඃ ।
විරාජි චක්රාදිවරායුධාංශුභි-
ර්භුජාභිරෂ්ටාභිරුදංචිතද්යුතිඃ ॥6॥
Meaning
කෘපා-බලේන-ඒව - by Thy compassion alone; පුරඃ ප්රචේතසාං - before the Prachetas; ප්රකාශම්-ආගාඃ - Thou manifested Thyself; පතගේංද්ර-වාහනඃ - having Garuda as vehicle; විරාජි චක්ර-ආදි-වර-ආයුධ-අංශුභිඃ- - lustrous by the resplendent discus and other divine weapons; භුජාභිඃ-අෂ්ටාභිඃ- - glorious with eight arms; උදංචිත-ද්යුතිඃ - spreading lustre;
Translation
By virtue of Thy compassion alone, Thou appeared before the Prachetas. Thou were seated on Thy vehicle Garuda, having eight arms, holding the resplendent discus and other divine weapons and spreading lustre all around.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ප්රචේතසාං තාවදයාචතාමපි
ත්වමේව කාරුණ්යභරාද්වරානදාඃ ।
භවද්විචිංතාऽපි ශිවාය දේහිනාං
භවත්වසෞ රුද්රනුතිශ්ච කාමදා ॥7॥
Meaning
ප්රචේතසාං තාවත්- - to the Prachetas, then; අයාචතාම්-අපි - though unsought for; ත්වම්-ඒව කාරුණ්ය-භරාත්- - Thou Thyself out of infinite compassion; වරාන්-අදාඃ - gave boons; භවත්-විචිංතා-අපි - even the thought of Thee; ශිවාය දේහිනාං භවතු- - may be for the benefit of the humans; අසෞ රුද්රනුතිඃ-ච - this Rudra hymn also; කාමදා (භවතු) - may be a fulfiller of desires;
Translation
Out of Thy infinite compassion, Thou gave the Prachetas boons,even without their asking. May even Thy thought be for the benefit of the humans and confer welfare on them, and may the Rudra hymn be the fulfiller of all desires.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අවාප්ය කාංතාං තනයාං මහීරුහාං
තයා රමධ්වං දශලක්ෂවත්සරීම් ।
සුතෝऽස්තු දක්ෂෝ නනු තත්ක්ෂණාච්ච මාං
ප්රයාස්යථේති න්යගදෝ මුදෛව තාන් ॥8॥
Meaning
අවාප්ය කාංතාං - getting as wife; තනයාං මහීරුහාං - the daughter of the trees; තයා රමධ්වං - with her enjoy; දශලක්ෂ-වත්සරීම් - for ten lakhs of years; සුතඃ-අස්තු දක්ෂඃ - may you have a son named Daksha; නනු තත්-ක්ෂණාත්- - immediately then; ච මාං ප්රයාස්යථ-ඉති - attain me also, thus; න්යගදඃ - saying so; මුදා-ඒව තාන් - pleasingly to them;
Translation
Being highly pleased with the Prachetas Thou blessed them that they would get the daughter of the trees as their wife. They would lead a happy life with her for ten lakh of years. Also that they would have a son named Daksha and soon thereafter they would attain Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තතශ්ච තේ භූතලරෝධිනස්තරූන්
ක්රුධා දහංතෝ ද්රුහිණේන වාරිතාඃ ।
ද්රුමෛශ්ච දත්තාං තනයාමවාප්ය තාං
ත්වදුක්තකාලං සුඛිනෝऽභිරේමිරේ ॥9॥
Meaning
තතඃ-ච තේ - then they (the trees); භූ-තල-රෝධිනඃ-තරූන් - which were covering the whole surface of the earth, the trees,; ක්රුධා දහංතඃ - burning (the trees) in anger; ද්රුහිණේන වාරිතාඃ - were stopped by Brahmaa; ද්රුමෛඃ-ච දත්තාං තනයාම්- - the trees gave their daughter; අවාප්ය තාං - (they) getting her; ත්වත්-උක්ත-කාලං - for the duration mentioned by Thee; සුඛිනඃ-අභිරේමිරේ - they lived happily;
Translation
Then the Prachetas who were angered by the dense growth of the trees which were covering the surface of the whole earth and causing obstruction, started to burn them. They were dissuaded by Brahmaa to do so. Obligingly the trees gave them their daughter in marriage and they lived with her happily for the time specified by Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අවාප්ය දක්ෂං ච සුතං කෘතාධ්වරාඃ
ප්රචේතසෝ නාරදලබ්ධයා ධියා ।
අවාපුරානංදපදං තථාවිධ-
ස්ත්වමීශ වාතාලයනාථ පාහි මාම් ॥10॥
Meaning
අවාප්ය දක්ෂං ච සුතං - and getting the son named Daksha; කෘත-අධ්වරාඃ - (and) having performed Brahma Satra; ප්රචේතසඃ - the Prachetas; නාරද-ලබ්ධයා ධියා - with the knowledge received from Naarada; අවාපුඃ-ආනංද-පදං - attained the state of bliss; තථා-බිධඃ-ත්වම්- - Thou who are thus; ඊශ - O Lord!; වාතාලයනාථ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; පාහි මාම් - protect me.;
Translation
After begetting the son Daksha and performing several sacrificial rites and having received the highest knowledge from Naarada they attained liberation. O Lord! O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who are of such merciful nature, grant protection to me.
