ශ්ලෝකඃ
ජාතස්ය ධ්රුවකුල ඒව තුංගකීර්තේ-
රංගස්ය ව්යජනි සුතඃ ස වේනනාමා ।
යද්දෝෂව්යථිතමතිඃ ස රාජවර්ය-
ස්ත්වත්පාදේ නිහිතමනා වනං ගතෝऽභූත් ॥1॥
Meaning
ජාතස්ය ධ්රුවකුලේ-ඒව - who was born in the line of Dhruva itself; තුංග-කීර්තේඃ-අංගස්ය - to Anga of great fame; ව්යජනි සුතඃ ස වේන-නාමා - was born the son named Vena; යත්-දෝෂ-ව්යථිත-මතිඃ - saddened by whose evil deeds; සඃ රාජවර්යඃ- - that noble king; ත්වත්-පාදේ නිහිත-මනා - with his mind fixed on Thy feet; වනං ගතඃ-අභූත් - took to the forest;
Translation
In the line of Dhruva was the very famous king Anga whose son was Vena. Distressed at the evil nature of his son, the noble king took to the forest with his mind fixed on Thy lotus feet alone.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
පාපෝऽපි ක්ෂිතිතලපාලනාය වේනඃ
පෞරාද්යෛරුපනිහිතඃ කඨෝරවීර්යඃ ।
සර්වේභ්යෝ නිජබලමේව සංප්රශංසන්
භූචක්රේ තව යජනාන්යයං න්යරෞත්සීත් ॥2॥
Meaning
පාපඃ-අපි - though evil minded; ක්ෂිති-තල-පාලනාය - for the governance of the country; වේනඃ පෞරාද්යෛඃ-උපනිහිතඃ - by the leading citizens, Vena was made the king; කඨෝර-වීර්යඃ - being of very great prowess; සර්වේභ්යඃ නිජ-බලම්-ඒව - to all his might alone; සංප්රශංසන් - boasting about; භූචක්රේ - all over the earth; තව යජනානි- - sacrifices to Thee; අයං න්යරෞත්සීත් - prohibited;
Translation
Though evil minded, Vena who was of great prowess was made the king by the leading citizens for the governance of the country. He always boasted of his strength and prohibited the practice of all forms of Thy worship and sacrifices.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
සංප්රාප්තේ හිතකථනාය තාපසෞඝේ
මත්තෝऽන්යෝ භුවනපතිර්න කශ්චනේති ।
ත්වන්නිංදාවචනපරෝ මුනීශ්වරෛස්තෛඃ
ශාපාග්නෞ ශලභදශාමනායි වේනඃ ॥3॥
Meaning
සංප්රාප්තේ - approaching him; හිතකථනාය - to advise him in regard to right conduct; තාපස-ඖඝේ - when a group of sages; මත්තඃ-අන්යඃ භුවනපතිඃ-න කශ්චන්-ඉති - other than me there is no lord of the earth saying thus; ත්වත්-නිංදා-වචන-පරඃ - indulging in defaming Thee; මුනීශ්වරෛඃ-තෛඃ - by those great sages; ශාප-අග්නෞ - in the fire of their curse; ශලභ-දශාම්-අනායි - was destroyed like a moth; වේනඃ - Vena;
Translation
When a group of sages approached him to advise him as to the right conduct, he indulged in abusing Thee declaring that there was no other ruler on the earth other than himself. The enraged sages cursed him. In the flame of the curse Vena was destroyed like a moth.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තන්නාශාත් ඛලජනභීරුකෛර්මුනීංද්රෛ-
ස්තන්මාත්රා චිරපරිරක්ෂිතේ තදංගේ ।
ත්යක්තාඝේ පරිමථිතාදථෝරුදංඩා-
ද්දෝර්දංඩේ පරිමථිතේ ත්වමාවිරාසීඃ ॥4॥
Meaning
තත්-නාශාත් - because of his death; ඛලජන-භීරුකෛඃ- මුනීංද්රෛඃ- - afraid of the wicked people, the great sages; තත්-මාත්රා චිරපරිරක්ෂිතේ තත්-අංගේ - from his body preserved by his mother for a long time; ත්යක්ත-අඝේ - removed sins; පරිමථිතාත්-අථ-උරුදංඩාත්- - by churning his thighs; දෝර්දංඩේ පරිමථිතේ - then (when) the hands (were) being churned; ත්වම්-ආවිරාසීත් - Thou manifested Thyself;
Translation
After his destruction, the sages feared that the absence of a ruler would lead to the tyranny of wicked people. So they took the body of Vena from his mother who had preserved it for a long time and churned the thighs. Thus his body became sinless. Then when his arms were churned, from there Thou appeared (in the form of Prithu).
ශ්ලෝකඃ
විඛ්යාතඃ පෘථුරිති තාපසෝපදිෂ්ටෛඃ
සූතාද්යෛඃ පරිණුතභාවිභූරිවීර්යඃ ।
වේනාර්ත්යා කබලිතසංපදං ධරිත්රී-
මාක්රාංතාං නිජධනුෂා සමාමකාර්ෂීඃ ॥5॥
Meaning
විඛ්යාතඃ පෘථු-ඉති - famous as Prithu; තාපස-උපදිෂ්ටෛඃ - thus being advised by the great sages; සූත-ආද්යෛඃ - the minstrels and others; පරිණුත-භාවි-භූරි-වීර්යඃ - sang in praise of Thy future achievements; වේන-ආර්ත්යා - tormented by Vena; කබලිත-සංපදං ධරිත්රීම්- - the earth who had withdrawn her resources into her interior; ආක්රාංතාං නිජ-ධනුෂා - was attacked by Thy arrow; සමාම්-අකාර්ෂී - (and was) made even;
Translation
This was the famous incarnation of Thee as Prithu, the sages declared thus. The minstrels and others sang in praise of Thy future achievements. The Earth who had withdrawn all her resources into her interior because of the oppression of Vena, was attacked by Thy bow and arrow, and was made to yield back the resources.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භූයස්තාං නිජකුලමුඛ්යවත්සයුක්ත්යෛ-
ර්දේවාද්යෛඃ සමුචිතචාරුභාජනේෂු ।
අන්නාදීන්යභිලෂිතානි යානි තානි
ස්වච්ඡංදං සුරභිතනූමදූදුහස්ත්වම් ॥6॥
Meaning
භූයඃ-තාං - then the earth; නිජ-කුල-මුඛ්ය-වත්ස-යුක්තෛඃ- - with the leader of each group as the calf; දේව-ආද්යෛඃ - by the gods and others; සමුචිත-චාරු-භාජනේෂු - in appropriate special vessels; අන්නාදීනි-අභිලෂිතානි - food and other things as desired; යානි තානි - this and that; ස්වච්ඡංදං - unhesitatingly; සුරභි-තනූම් - (the earth) in the form of Surabhi (the celestial cow); අදූදුහඃ ත්වම් - Thou milked;
Translation
Thou then made the gods and other species of beings to freely milk the Earth who had become like the celestial cow Surabhi. The leaders of the different groups of gods and others acted as calves milking their desired requirements in appropriate special vessels.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ආත්මානං යජති මඛෛස්ත්වයි ත්රිධාම-
න්නාරබ්ධේ ශතතමවාජිමේධයාගේ ।
ස්පර්ධාලුඃ ශතමඛ ඒත්ය නීචවේෂෝ
හෘත්වාऽශ්වං තව තනයාත් පරාජිතෝऽභූත් ॥7॥
Meaning
ආත්මානං යජති මඛෛඃ-ත්වයි - as Thou were sacrificing to Thyself by Yanjyas; ත්රිධාමන්- - O Lord of the three worlds!; ආරබ්ධේ ශතතම-වාජි-මේධ-යාගේ - (and) at the starting of the hundredth Ashwamedha Yanjya; ස්පර්ධාලු ශතමඛඃ - jealous Indra; ඒත්ය නීචවේෂඃ - came as a barbarian; හෘත්වා-අශ්වං - stealing away the horse; තව තනයාත් - by Thy son; පරාජිතඃ-අභූත් - was defeated;
Translation
O Lord of the three worlds! As Thou (as Prithu) were performing sacrifices to Thyself, and were to begin the hundredth Ashwamedha Yanjya, Indra became jealous. In the guise of a lowly person he stole the Yanjya horse. He was then defeated by Thy son (Vijitashwana).
ශ්ලෝකඃ
දේවේංද්රං මුහුරිති වාජිනං හරංතං
වහ්නෞ තං මුනිවරමංඩලේ ජුහූෂෞ ।
රුංධානේ කමලභවේ ක්රතෝඃ සමාප්තෞ
සාක්ෂාත්ත්වං මධුරිපුමෛක්ෂථාඃ ස්වයං ස්වම් ॥8॥
Meaning
දේවේංද්රං මුහුඃ-ඉති - Indra again and again thus; වාජිනං හරංතං - who was stealing the horse; වහ්නෞ තං - in the fire, him; මුනිවර-මංඩලේ ජුහූෂෞ - when the sages were about to offer as oblation; රුංධානේ කමලභවේ - prevented by Brahma; ක්රතෝඃ සමාප්තෞ - at the end of the Yanjya; සාක්ෂාත්-ත්වං - Thou in front of Thee (Prithu); මධුරිපුම්-ඓක්ෂථාඃ - saw Madhuripu (Maha Vishnu); ස්වයං ස්වම් - Thyself Thou;
Translation
Indra who was again and again trying to steal the sacrificial horse, was about to be offered into the fire by the sacrificing sages, but they were restrained to do so by Brahmaa. When the sacrifice was completed Thou as Prithu saw Thyself manifested in Thy real form as Vishnu, the slayer of the demon Madhu.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
තද්දත්තං වරමුපලභ්ය භක්තිමේකාං
ගංගාංතේ විහිතපදඃ කදාපි දේව ।
සත්රස්ථං මුනිනිවහං හිතානි ශංස-
න්නෛක්ෂිෂ්ඨාඃ සනකමුඛාන් මුනීන් පුරස්තාත් ॥9॥
Meaning
තත්-දත්තං වරම්-උපලභ්ය - getting a boon given by Him; භක්තිම්-ඒකාං - firm devotion; ගංගා-අංතේ විහිත-පදඃ කදාපි - on the banks of Gangaa having established residence, once; දේව - O Lord!; සත්රස්ථං මුනි-නිවහං - to the group of sages who were doing Yanjya; හිතානි ශංසන්- - preaching spiritual welfare; ඓක්ෂිෂ්ඨාඃ - (Thou as Prithu) saw; සනක-මුඛාන් මුනීන් පුරස්තාත් - the sages Sanaka and others in front;
Translation
O Lord! After getting firm devotion alone as a boon from Him (Vishnu), Thou established Thy residence on the banks of Gangaa. Once as Thou were expounding Dharma to the sages who had assembled there for Yanjya, Thou saw the Sanaka and other sages before Thee.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
විජ්ඤානං සනකමුඛෝදිතං දධානඃ
ස්වාත්මානං ස්වයමගමෝ වනාංතසේවී ।
තත්තාදෘක්පෘථුවපුරීශ සත්වරං මේ
රෝගෞඝං ප්රශමය වාතගේහවාසින් ॥10॥
Meaning
විජ්ඤානං - the (ultimate) knowledge; සනක-මුඛ-උදිතං - imparted by Sanaka and the other sages; දධානඃ - receiving; ස්ව-ආත්මානං ස්වයම්-අගමඃ - Thou attained Thy own self; වන-අංත-සේවී - living in the forest; තත්-තාදෘක්-පෘථු-වපුඃ-ඊශ - O Lord! Of such nature embodied as Prithu!; සත්වරං මේ - hastily my; රෝගෞඝං - all ailments; ප්රශමය - eradicate; වාතගේහවාසින් - O Lord of Guruvaayur!;
Translation
Receiving the ultimate knowledge imparted by Sanaka and other sages, and living in the forest, Thou realised Thy own self. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Who embodied Thyself as Prithu! Be pleased to quickly cure me of all my ailments.
