ශ්ලෝකඃ
අථ වාරිණි ඝෝරතරං ඵණිනං
ප්රතිවාරයිතුං කෘතධීර්භගවන් ।
ද්රුතමාරිථ තීරගනීපතරුං
විෂමාරුතශෝෂිතපර්ණචයම් ॥1॥
Meaning
අථ වාරිණි - then in the water; ඝෝරතරං ඵණිනං - very fierce that serpent; ප්රතිවාරයිතුං - to drive away; කෘතධීඃ - having decided; භගවන් - O Lord; ද්රුතම්-ආරිථ - quickly (Thou) approached; තීරග-නීප-තරුං - the bank situated Kadamba tree; විෂ-මාරුත-ශෝෂිත- - the poisoned breeze had dried up; පර්ණ-චයම් - the cluster of leaves;
Translation
O Lord! Thou then made up Thy mind to drive away the fierce serpent from the waters. Thou quickly approached and got up on a Kadamba tree standing on the bank of the river, with its leaves withered due to the poisonous breeze.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අධිරුහ්ය පදාංබුරුහේණ ච තං
නවපල්ලවතුල්යමනෝජ්ඤරුචා ।
හ්රදවාරිණි දූරතරං න්යපතඃ
පරිඝූර්ණිතඝෝරතරංග්ගණේ ॥2॥
Meaning
අධිරුහ්ය - climbing with; පද-අංබු-රුහේණ - feet tender lotus like; ච තං - and that (tree); නව-පල්ලව-තුල්ය- - like tender new leaves; මනෝජ්ඤ-රුචා - charming and splendorous; හ්රද-වාරිණි - into the deep water; දූරතරං න්යපතඃ - far out (Thou) jumped; පරිඝූර්ණිත- - with swirling; ඝෝර-තරංග-ගණේ - fierce waves of water;
Translation
Thou climbed that tree with Thy lotus like splendorous charming feet resembling tender leaves, and with a long leap jumped far out into the deep waters with swirling fierce waves.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
භුවනත්රයභාරභෘතෝ භවතෝ
ගුරුභාරවිකංපිවිජෘංභිජලා ।
පරිමජ්ජයති ස්ම ධනුශ්ශතකං
තටිනී ඣටිති ස්ඵුටඝෝෂවතී ॥3॥
Meaning
භුවන-ත්රය-භාර-භෘතඃ - of the three worlds the weight bearing; භවතඃ ගුරු-භාර- - of Thee the immense weight (causing); විකංපි-විජෘංභි-ජලා - swirling and swelling with its waters; පරිමජ්ජයති ස්ම - started to submerge; ධනුඃ-ශතකං - the area of a hundred bows (in measurement); තටිනී ඣටිති - on the river bed, and suddenly; ස්ඵුට-ඝෝෂවතී - (the river) made an intense roar;
Translation
When, Thou the bearer of the weight of the three worlds, jumped, Thy immense weight caused the waters to swirl and swell. On the river bed an area of a hundred bows (yards) submerged, as a sudden roar arose from the river.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අථ දික්ෂු විදික්ෂු පරික්ෂුභිත-
භ්රමිතෝදරවාරිනිනාදභරෛඃ ।
උදකාදුදගාදුරගාධිපති-
ස්ත්වදුපාංතමශාංතරුෂාऽංධමනාඃ ॥4॥
Meaning
අථ දික්ෂු විදික්ෂු - then, in all the directions and the intermediary directions; පරික්ෂුභිත-භ්රමිත- - turbulent swirling; උදර-වාරි-නිනාද-භරෛඃ - from the middle of the waters roaring aloud; උදකාත්-උදගාත්- - from (that) water came out; උරගාධිපතිඃ- - the king of serpents; ත්වත්-උපාංතම්- - near Thee; අශාංත-රුෂා- - disturbed and angered; අංධමනාඃ - and so blinded (with rage);
Translation
The loud roar from the middle of the waters which extended to all the directions and the intermediary directions, disturbed and angered the serpent king Kaaliya. He came out of the water and rushed up to Thee in a fit of blinded anger.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ඵණශෘංගසහස්රවිනිස්සෘමර-
ජ්වලදග්නිකණෝග්රවිෂාංබුධරම් ।
පුරතඃ ඵණිනං සමලෝකයථා
බහුශෘංගිණමංජනශෛලමිව ॥5॥
Meaning
ඵණ-ශෘංග- - (with) hoods , peak (like); සහස්ර-විනිඃසෘමර- - thousands of them emitting; ජ්වලත්-අග්නි-කණ- - burning like fire flakes; උග්ර-විෂ-අංබුධරම් - fierce poison fluid bearing; පුරතඃ ඵණිනං - in front the serpent; සමලෝකයථාඃ - (Thou) saw; බහු-ශෘංගි-ගණම්- - many peaked; අංජන-ශෛලම්-ඉව - black mountain, as if;
Translation
Thou saw the serpent in front with his thousands of peak like hoods emitting burning fire flakes and fierce poison fluid, looking like a many peaked black mountain.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ජ්වලදක්ෂි පරික්ෂරදුග්රවිෂ-
ශ්වසනෝෂ්මභරඃ ස මහාභුජගඃ ।
පරිදශ්ය භවංතමනංතබලං
සමවේෂ්ටයදස්ඵුටචේෂ්ටමහෝ ॥6॥
Meaning
ජ්වලත්-අක්ෂි - with flaming eyes; පරික්ෂරත්-උග්ර-විෂ- - emitting deadly poison; ශ්වසන්-ඌෂ්මභරඃ - breathing out intense heat; ස මහාභුජගඃ - that huge serpent; පරිදශ්ය - biting; භවංතම්-අනංතබලං - Thee of limitless strength; සමවේෂ්ටයත්- - coiled (around Thee); අස්ඵුට-චේෂ්ටම්- - making invisible Thy movements; අහෝ - Alas;
Translation
Alas! That huge serpent emitting deadly poison and breathing out intense heat, bit Thee of limitless strength, all over Thy body. Then it coiled around Thee making Thy body and Thy movements invisible.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අවිලෝක්ය භවංතමථාකුලිතේ
තටගාමිනි බාලකධේනුගණේ ।
ව්රජගේහතලේऽප්යනිමිත්තශතං
සමුදීක්ෂ්ය ගතා යමුනාං පශුපාඃ ॥7॥
Meaning
අවිලෝක්ය භවංතම්- - not seeing Thee; අථ-ආකුලිතේ - then distressed; තට-ගාමිනි - (who) to the bank (of river Yamunaa) had come; බාලක-ධේනු-ගණේ - the children and the cows all; ව්රජ-ගේහ-තලේ-අපි- - in Gokula houses also; අනිමිත්ත-ශතං - evil omens innumerable; සමුදීක්ෂ්ය ගතා - seeing went; යමුනාං පශුපාඃ - towards Yamunaa the Gopas;
Translation
The Gopa boys and the cows were distressed when they did not see Thee, and went to the bank of the river Yamunaa. In the houses in Gokula also the Gopas saw hundreds of evil omens and they also rushed towards Yamunaa.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අඛිලේෂු විභෝ භවදීය දශා-
මවලෝක්ය ජිහාසුෂු ජීවභරම් ।
ඵණිබංධනමාශු විමුච්ය ජවා-
දුදගම්යත හාසජුෂා භවතා ॥8॥
Meaning
අඛිලේෂු - (as) all of them; විභෝ - O Lord; භවදීය-දශාම් - Thy plight; අවලෝක්ය - seeing; ජිහාසුෂු - ready to give up their; ජීවභරම් - lives; ඵණි-බංධනම්- - the coils of the snake; ආශු විමුච්ය - quickly shedding; ජවාත්-උදගම්යත - hastily emerged; හාසජුෂා භවතා - with a smile, Thou;
Translation
O Lord! All of them were overwhelmed with grief on seeing Thy plight and were ready to give up their lives in order to save Thee. Just then, Thou quickly shed the coils of the snake and hastily emerged with a smile.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
අධිරුහ්ය තතඃ ඵණිරාජඵණාන්
නනෘතේ භවතා මෘදුපාදරුචා ।
කලශිංජිතනූපුරමංජුමිල-
ත්කරකංකණසංකුලසංක්වණිතම් ॥9॥
Meaning
අධිරුහ්ය තතඃ - climbing upon then; ඵණි-රාජ-ඵණාන් - the serpent king,s hoods; නනෘතේ භවතා - dance was performed by Thee; මෘදු-පාද-රුචා - with delicate feet beautiful; කලශිංජිත-නූපුර- - the gentle sound of the anklets; මංජු-මිලත්- - beautifully mingling with; කර-කංකණ-සංකුල- - the bangles on the wrists'; සංක්වණිතම් - tinkling;
Translation
Then Thou mounted on the hoods of the serpent king and danced with Thy delicate beautiful feet. The gentle sound of the anklets mingled beautifully and rhythmically with the tinkling of the bangles on Thy wrists.
ශ්ලෝකඃ
ජහෘෂුඃ පශුපාස්තුතුෂුර්මුනයෝ
වවෘෂුඃ කුසුමානි සුරේංද්රගණාඃ ।
ත්වයි නෘත්යති මාරුතගේහපතේ
පරිපාහි ස මාං ත්වමදාංතගදාත් ॥10॥
Meaning
ජහෘෂුඃ පශුපාඃ- - rejoiced the Gopas; තුතුෂුඃ-මුනයඃ - sang hymns the sages; වවෘෂුඃ කුසුමානි - showered flowers; සුරේංද්ර-ගණාඃ - the gods' groups; ත්වයි නෘත්යති - when Thou danced; මාරුතගේහපතේ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; පරිපාහි - save; ස - That (Thou); මාං - me; ත්වම්- - Thou; අදාංත-ගදාත් - (from) severe illness;
Translation
As Thou performed the dance, the Gopas rejoiced, the sages sang hymns, and the gods showered flowers. O Lord of the Guruvaayur temple! Such that Thou are, save me from the severe illness.
