නාරායණීයං දශක 89

ශ්ලෝකඃ
රමාජානේ ජානේ යදිහ තව භක්තේෂු විභවෝ
න සද්යස්සංපද්යස්තදිහ මදකෘත්ත්වාදශමිනාම් ।
ප්රශාංතිං කෘත්වෛව ප්රදිශසි තතඃ කාමමඛිලං
ප්රශාංතේෂු ක්ෂිප්රං න ඛලු භවදීයේ ච්යුතිකථා ॥1॥

Meaning
රමාජානේ - O Consort of Laxmi (Ramaa); ජානේ යත්-ඉහ - I know that here; තව භක්තේෂු විභවඃ - to Thy devotees prosperity; න සද්යඃ-සංපද්යඃ- - does not quickly come; තත්-ඉහ - that (prosperity) here; මද-කෘත්ත්වාත්- - (because is) pride generating; අශමිනාම් - of the passionate; ප්රශාංතිං කෘත්වා-ඒව - dispassionate making (them) only; ප්රදිශසි තතඃ - (Thou) give then; කාමම්-අඛිලම් - desires all; ප්රශාංතේෂු ක්ෂිප්රං - to the dispassionate quickly; න ඛලු - not indeed; භවදීයේ ච්යුති-කථා - to Thy devotee downfall does not come;

Translation
O Consort of Ramaa! (Laxmi) Thy devotees are not easily blessed in this world. I know it to be so because prosperity generates pride in the passionate people. After making them dispassionate Thou do fulfill all their desires. Those who are already dispassionate, to them Thy blessings come quickly. There is no question of Thy devotee's downfall.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
සද්යඃ ප්රසාදරුෂිතාන් විධිශංකරාදීන්
කේචිද්විභෝ නිජගුණානුගුණං භජංතඃ ।
භ්රෂ්ටා භවංති බත කෂ්ටමදීර්ඝදෘෂ්ට්යා
ස්පෂ්ටං වෘකාසුර උදාහරණං කිලාස්මින් ॥2॥

Meaning
සද්යඃ ප්රසාද-රුෂිතාන් - quickly pleased and angered; විධි-ශංකර-ආදීන් - Brahmaa Shiva and others; කේචිත්-විභෝ - some people O Lord!; නිජ-ගුණ-අනුගුණම් - in their own nature's accordance; භජංතඃ - worshipping; භ්රෂ්ටාඃ-භවංති - disgrace attain to; බත කෂ්ටම්- - alas unfortunate (is this); අදීර්ඝ-දෘෂ්ට්යා - due to shortsightedness; ස්පෂ්ටං වෘකාසුර - (It is) clear (by) Vrikaasura; උදාහරණං කිල-අස්මින් - example indeed in this (case);

Translation
O Lord! Brahamaa, Shiva and others who are pleased and angered quickly, are worshipped by people in accordance with their own nature. Alas! They are led to disgrace by their shortsightedness. This is indeed clear by the example of Vrikaasura.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
ශකුනිජඃ ස තු නාරදමේකදා
ත්වරිතතෝෂමපෘච්ඡදධීශ්වරම් ।
ස ච දිදේශ ගිරීශමුපාසිතුං
න තු භවංතමබංධුමසාධුෂු ॥3॥

Meaning
ශකුනිජඃ ස - the son of Shakuni, he (Vrikaasura); තු නාරදම්-ඒකදා - indeed to Naarada once; ත්වරිත-තෝෂම්-අපෘච්ඡත්- - soon pleased asked (about); අධීශ්වරම් - the Deity; ස ච දිදේශ - and he indicated; ගිරීශම්-උපාසිතුං - Shiva to worship; න තු භවංතම්- - (and) not indeed Thee; අබංධුම්-අසාධුෂු - (who are) non supportive towards evil people;

Translation
Vrikaasura, the son of Shakuni once asked Naarada as to which Deity was the easiest to please. Naarada instructed him to worship Shiva and not Thee who are not supportive towards evil minded people.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
තපස්තප්ත්වා ඝෝරං ස ඛලු කුපිතඃ සප්තමදිනේ
ශිරඃ ඡිත්වා සද්යඃ පුරහරමුපස්ථාප්ය පුරතඃ ।
අතික්ෂුද්රං රෞද්රං ශිරසි කරදානේන නිධනං
ජගන්නාථාද්වව්රේ භවති විමුඛානාං ක්ව ශුභධීඃ ॥4॥

Meaning
තපඃ-තප්ත්වා ඝෝරං - penance practicing very severe; ස ඛලු කුපිතඃ - he indeed in great anger; සප්තම-දිනේ - on the seventh day; ශිරඃ ඡිත්වා - (his) head cutting off; සද්යඃ පුරහරම්- - immediately Shiva; උපස්ථාප්ය පුරතඃ - making to appear in front; අතික්ෂුද්රං රෞද්රං - very mean and cruel; ශිරසි කර-දානේන - on head placing (his) hand; නිධනං - death; ජගන්නාථාත්-වව්රේ - from the Lord of the universe (Shiva) sought (as a boon); භවති විමුඛානාං - from Thee (those who are) indifferent; ක්ව ශුභධීඃ - where is good sense;

Translation
He indeed practiced severe penance and on the seventh day greatly angered, threatened to cut off his head and thus made Shiva appear before him immediately. From the Lord of the universe, Shiva, he sought a very mean and cruel boon that on who-so-ever's head he placed his hand would die immediately. How can good sense prevail upon people who are indifferent to Thee?

ශ්ලෝකඃ
මෝක්තාරං බංධමුක්තෝ හරිණපතිරිව ප්රාද්රවත්සෝऽථ රුද්රං
දෛත්යාත් භීත්යා ස්ම දේවෝ දිශි දිශි වලතේ පෘෂ්ඨතෝ දත්තදෘෂ්ටිඃ ।
තූෂ්ණීකේ සර්වලෝකේ තව පදමධිරෝක්ෂ්යංතමුද්වීක්ෂ්ය ශර්වං
දූරාදේවාග්රතස්ත්වං පටුවටුවපුෂා තස්ථිෂේ දානවාය ॥5॥

Meaning
මෝක්තාරං - the one who releases; බංධ-මුක්තඃ - from bondage released; හරිණපතිඃ-ඉව - a lion as if; ප්රාද්රවත්-ස-අථ රුද්රං - rushed he then towards Shiva; දෛත්යාත් භීත්යා ස්ම - by the Asura afraid being; දේවඃ දිශි දිශි - the Lord in all directions; වලතේ - ran about; පෘෂ්ඨතඃ-දත්ත-දෘෂ්ටිඃ - towards the back looking; තූෂ්ණීකේ සර්ව-ලෝකේ - as kept quiet all the world; තව පදම්-අධිරෝක්ෂ්යංතම්- - Thy abode climbing up to; උද්වීක්ෂ්ය ශර්වං - seeing Shiva; දූරාත්-ඒව-අග්රතඃ-ත්වං - from far only, in front Thou; පටු-වටු-වපුෂා - (in) a clever Brahamachari's guise; තස්ථිෂේ දානවාය - stood (waiting) for the Asura;

Translation
Like a lion who rushes towards the rescuer, Vrikaasura rushed towards Shiva. Lord Shiva ran about in all directions in panic of the Asura, and kept looking backwards. Everyone in the whole world kept quiet. Then from far Thou saw Shiva as he was about to reach Thy abode. Then, in the guise of a clever Brahmachaari Thou stood waiting for the Asura.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
භද්රං තේ ශාකුනේය භ්රමසි කිමධුනා ත්වං පිශාචස්ය වාචා
සංදේහශ්චේන්මදුක්තෞ තව කිමු න කරෝෂ්යංගුලීමංගමෞලෞ ।
ඉත්ථං ත්වද්වාක්යමූඪඃ ශිරසි කෘතකරඃ සෝऽපතච්ඡින්නපාතං
භ්රංශෝ හ්යේවං පරෝපාසිතුරපි ච ගතිඃ ශූලිනෝऽපි ත්වමේව ॥6॥

Meaning
භද්රං තේ ශාකුනේය - hail to you O son of Shakuni!; භ්රමසි කිං අධුනා ත්වං - (why are) running about now you; පිශාචස්ය වාචා - on a ghost's words; සංදේහඃ-චේත්-මත්-උක්තෞ - doubt if there is in my words; තව කිමු න කරෝෂි- - on your, why not do you do; අංගුලීම්-අංග-මෞලෞ - the finger, O dear One, on the head; ඉත්ථං ත්වත්-වාක්ය-මූඪඃ - thus by Thy words fooled; ශිරසි කෘත-කරඃ - on head placing hand; සඃ-අපතත්-ඡින්න-පාතං - he fell (like) an uprooted tree; භ්රංශඃ- හි-ඒවං - destruction indeed such; පර-උපාසිතුඃඅපි - other (deities) worshipping indeed; ච ගතිඃ - and are a last resort; ශූලිනඃ-අපි ත්වම්-ඒව - to Shankara also Thou alone;

Translation
Hail to you O son of Shakuni! Why are you needlessly running about, placing your faith in this ghost? If you doubt my words, O dear One! Test for yourself by placing your fingers on your own head.' Befooled by these words of Thine, he placed his hand on his head and immediately fell down dead as an uprooted tree. Such is the fate of the people who worship other deities. What more, Thou are the ultimate refuge of even Shiva.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
භෘගුං කිල සරස්වතීනිකටවාසිනස්තාපසා-
ස්ත්රිමූර්තිෂු සමාදිශන්නධිකසත්ත්වතාං වේදිතුම් ।
අයං පුනරනාදරාදුදිතරුද්ධරෝෂේ විධෞ
හරේऽපි ච ජිහිංසිෂෞ ගිරිජයා ධෘතේ ත්වාමගාත් ॥7॥

Meaning
භෘගුං කිල - Bhrigu indeed; සරස්වතී-නිකට-වාසිනඃ- - living near (the river) Saraswati; තාපසාඃ- - the ascetics; ත්රි-මූර්තිෂු - among the Trinity; සමාදිශන්- - instructed (Bhrigu); අධික-සත්ත්වතාං වේදිතුං - to know who is more inclined towards Saatvic gunas; අයං පුනඃ-අනාදරාත්- - this (Bhrigu) again with non-respect; උදිත-රුද්ධ-රෝෂේ - (which) arose, and was controlled, the anger; විධෞ - in Brahmaa (when); හරේ-අපි ච - and in Shiva also; ජිහිංසිෂෞ - eager to kill (Bhrigu); ගිරිජයා ධෘතේ - by Paarvati restricted; ත්වාම්-අගාත් - to Thee went;

Translation
Once the ascetics residing on the banks of the river Saraswati assigned sage Bhrigu to test who among the Trinity was more inclined towards Saatvic guna. Bhrigu went to Brahmaa who was enraged, but he controlled his anger, when Bhrigu showed his disrespect. Next he went to Shiva and behaved with him in the same manner. Shiva was eager to kill him but was restricted by Paarvati. Then Bhrigu went to Thee.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
සුප්තං රමාංකභුවි පංකජලෝචනං ත්වාං
විප්රේ විනිඝ්නති පදේන මුදෝත්ථිතස්ත්වම් ।
සර්වං ක්ෂමස්ව මුනිවර්ය භවේත් සදා මේ
ත්වත්පාදචින්හමිහ භූෂණමිත්යවාදීඃ ॥8॥

Meaning
සුප්තං රමා-අංක-භුවි - sleeping on Laxmi's lap; පංකජලෝචනං ත්වාං - lotus eyed Thee; විප්රේ විනිඝ්නති පදේන - when the sage hit by foot; මුදා-උත්ථිතඃ-ත්වම් - happily getting up Thou; සර්වං ක්ෂමස්ව මුනිවර්ය - everything forgive O great sage; භවේත් සදා මේ - will be always my; ත්වත්-පාද-චින්හම්-ඉහ - your foot mark here; භූෂණම්-ඉති-අවාදීඃ - decoration, thus Thou said;

Translation
When Bhrigu went to Thee, O Lotus eyed! Thou were sleeping on Laxmi's lap. He hit Thee on the chest with his foot. Thou got up in good humour and asked for pardon for everything and told him that the mark of his foot would always remain as a decoration on his chest.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
නිශ්චිත්ය තේ ච සුදෘඪං ත්වයි බද්ධභාවාඃ
සාරස්වතා මුනිවරා දධිරේ විමෝක්ෂම් ।
ත්වාමේවමච්යුත පුනශ්ච්යුතිදෝෂහීනං
සත්ත්වෝච්චයෛකතනුමේව වයං භජාමඃ ॥9॥

Meaning
නිශ්චිත්ය තේ ච - and having decided they; සුදෘඪං ත්වයි - firmly in Thee; බද්ධභාවාඃ - anchoring devotion; සාරස්වතාඃ-මුනිවරාඃ- - residing near the river Saraswati, the great sages; දධිරේ විමෝක්ෂම් - attained liberation; ත්වාම්-ඒවම්-අච්යුත - to Thee, thus, O Changeless One!; පුනඃ-අච්යුති-දෝෂ-හීනං - again from the decay defect free; සත්ත්ව-උච්චය-ඒක-තනුම්- - of Saatvic and majestic one form; ඒව වයං භජාමඃ - alone I worship;

Translation
The great ascetics residing near the Saraswati river decided that Thou were the most Saatvic of the Trinity. They firmly anchored their devotion into Thee and attained union with Thee. O Changeless One! Who are free from the shortcoming of decay, Thy exalted Saatvic form we worship.

ශ්ලෝකඃ
ජගත්සෘෂ්ට්යාදෞ ත්වාං නිගමනිවහෛර්වංදිභිරිව
ස්තුතං විෂ්ණෝ සච්චිත්පරමරසනිර්ද්වෛතවපුෂම් ।
පරාත්මානං භූමන් පශුපවනිතාභාග්යනිවහං
පරිතාපශ්රාංත්යෛ පවනපුරවාසින් පරිභජේ ॥10॥

Meaning
ජගත්-සෘෂ්ටි-ආදෞ - the universe's creation in the beginning of; ත්වාං නිගම-නිවහෛඃ- - to Thee by the Vedas altogether; වංදිභිඃ-ඉව - as by the minstrels as (in a king's court); ස්තුතං විෂ්ණෝ - praised O Vishnu!; සත්-චිත්-පරම-රස- - Pure Consciousness Highest Bliss; නිර්ද්වෛත-වපුෂම් - undual embodiment; පරාත්මානං භූමන් - the Supreme Being O Infinite One!; පශුප-වනිතා-භාග්ය-නිවහං - the cowherd women's merits' embodiment; පරිතාප-ශ්රාංත්යෛ - the sorrows to be removed; පවනපුරවාසින් - O Resident of Guruvaayur!; පරිභජේ - I intensely worship;

Translation
O Vishnu! In the beginning of the creation of the universe, Thy praises were sung by the Vedas just as the minstrels in the king's court.O Infinite One! Thou are the Pure Consciousness Highest Bliss undual embodiment. Thou are also the personification of all the merits of the cowherd women put together. O Resident of Guruvaayur! I intensely worship Thee for the removal of all my sorrows.
