ਤਦਨੁ ਨਂਦਮਮਂਦਸ਼ੁਭਾਸ੍ਪਦਂ ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਪੁਰੀਂ ਕਰਦਾਨਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਗਤਮ੍।
ਸਮਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ ਜਗਾਦ ਭਵਤ੍ਪਿਤਾ ਵਿਦਿਤਕਂਸਸਹਾਯਜਨੋਦ੍ਯਮਃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਤਦਨੁ ਨਂਦਮ੍- - after that to Nanda; ਅਮਂਦ-ਸ਼ੁਭ-ਆਸ੍ਪਦਮ੍ - (who is) of non dimmed virtues the abode; ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪ-ਪੁਰੀਮ੍ - to the king's city; ਕਰ-ਦਾਨ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਗਤਮ੍ - to pay his tributes (taxes), who had gone; ਸਮਵਲੋਕ੍ਯ - seeing (meeting); ਜਗਾਦ ਭਵਤ੍-ਪਿਤਾ - said (to Nanda), Thy father (Vasudeva); ਵਿਦਿਤ-ਕਂਸ- - who knew of Kansa's; ਸਹਾਯਜਨ-ਉਦ੍ਯਮਃ - and Kansa's supporters' activities;
Translation
Thereafter, Nanda (who is the abode of undiminished virtues), went to the king's city to pay his tributes (taxes). On meeting him, Thy father Vasudeva who knew of the activities of Kansa and his supporters, told him that.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਯਿ ਸਖੇ ਤਵ ਬਾਲਕਜਨ੍ਮ ਮਾਂ ਸੁਖਯਤੇਦ੍ਯ ਨਿਜਾਤ੍ਮਜਜਨ੍ਮਵਤ੍ ।
ਇਤਿ ਭਵਤ੍ਪਿਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਂ ਵ੍ਰਜਨਾਯਕੇ ਸਮਧਿਰੋਪ੍ਯ ਸ਼ਸ਼ਂਸ ਤਮਾਦਰਾਤ੍ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਅਯਿ ਸਖੇ - O friend!; ਤਵ ਬਾਲਕ ਜਨ੍ਮ - to you a son's birth; ਮਾਂ-ਸੁਖਯਤੇ-ਅਦ੍ਯ - gives me pleasure now; ਨਿਜ-ਆਤ੍ਮਜ-ਜਨ੍ਮਵਤ੍ - my own son's birth like; ਇਤਿ ਭਵਤ੍-ਪਿਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਂ - thus Thy fatherhood; ਵ੍ਰਜਨਾਯਕੇ ਸਮਧਿਰੋਪ੍ਯ - to the cowherd chief, (he cleverly) attributed; ਸ਼ਸ਼ਂਸ ਤਮ੍-ਆਦਰਾਤ੍ - and praised him with affection;
Translation
"O Friend! The birth of a son to you gives me pleasure as if a son were born to myself." Thus he cleverly attributed Thy fatherhood on Nanda, and praised him with affection.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਇਹ ਚ ਸਂਤ੍ਯਨਿਮਿਤ੍ਤਸ਼ਤਾਨਿ ਤੇ ਕਟਕਸੀਮ੍ਨਿ ਤਤੋ ਲਘੁ ਗਮ੍ਯਤਾਮ੍ ।
ਇਤਿ ਚ ਤਦ੍ਵਚਸਾ ਵ੍ਰਜਨਾਯਕੋ ਭਵਦਪਾਯਭਿਯਾ ਦ੍ਰੁਤਮਾਯਯੌ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਇਹ ਚ ਸਂਤਿ- - and here there are; ਅਨਿਮਿਤ੍ਤ-ਸ਼ਤਾਨਿ - bad omens in hundreds; ਤੇ ਕਟਕ-ਸੀਮ੍ਨਿ - at your residence; ਤਤਃ ਲਘੁ ਗਮ੍ਯਤਾਮ੍ - therefore soon (you) should go; ਇਤਿ ਚ ਤਤ੍-ਵਚਸਾ - and thus, by his (Vaudeva's) words; ਵ੍ਰਜਨਾਯਕਃ - the cowherd chieftain (Nandagopa); ਭਵਤ੍-ਅਪਾਯ-ਭਿਯਾ - to Thee danger apprehending; ਦ੍ਰੁਤਮ੍-ਆਯਯੌ - quickly returned;
Translation
"Here there are bad omens in hundreds and soon at your residence also it will not be safe, so you should return soon". Thus by Vasudeva's words, apprehending danger to Thee, Nanda quickly returned.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਵਸਰੇ ਖਲੁ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਚ ਕਾਚਨ ਵ੍ਰਜਪਦੇ ਮਧੁਰਾਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਰਂਗਨਾ ।
ਤਰਲਸ਼ਟ੍ਪਦਲਾਲਿਤਕੁਂਤਲਾ ਕਪਟਪੋਤਕ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਟਂ ਗਤਾ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਅਵਸਰੇ ਖਲੁ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਚ - at that time, indeed, and there; ਕਾਚਨ ਵ੍ਰਜਪਦੇ - some (female) in Gokula; ਮਧੁਰ-ਆਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਃ-ਅਂਗਨਾ - beautiful looking woman; ਤਰਲ-ਸ਼ਟ੍ਪਦ- - (with) hovering bees; ਲਾਲਿਤ-ਕੁਂਤਲਾ - around (her) locks of hair (due to the sweet smell); ਕਪਟ-ਪੋਤਕ - (O Thou) in the guise of a child!; ਤੇ ਨਿਕਟਂ ਗਤਾ - went near Thee;
Translation
Just then there in Gokula, some beautiful looking woman with honey bees hovering around the sweet smelling flowers in her hair locks, entered. O Thou! In the guise of a child, she approached Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸਪਦਿ ਸਾ ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਬਾਲਕਚੇਤਨਾ ਨਿਸ਼ਿਚਰਾਨ੍ਵਯਜਾ ਕਿਲ ਪੂਤਨਾ ।
ਵ੍ਰਜਵਧੂਸ਼੍ਵਿਹ ਕੇਯਮਿਤਿ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਂ ਵਿਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਤੀਸ਼ੁ ਭਵਂਤਮੁਪਾਦਦੇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਸਪਦਿ ਸਾ - quickly she; ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਬਾਲਕ-ਚੇਤਨਾ - who had taken the children' lives; ਨਿਸ਼ਿਚਰ-ਅਨ੍ਵਯ-ਜਾ - of demon clan born; ਕਿਲ ਪੂਤਨਾ - indeed Pootanaa; ਵ੍ਰਜ-ਵਧੂਸ਼ੁ-ਇਹ - among the Vraja women here; ਕਾ-ਇਯਮ੍-ਇਤਿ - who is this, thus; ਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਂ ਵਿਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਤੀਸ਼ੁ - for a moment wondering; ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਉਪਾਦਦੇ - Thee lifted up (in her arms);
Translation
Quickly she, Pootanaa, born in the clan of demons, who had taken the lives of many children, lifted Thee up, even as the Vraja women were for a second wondering as to who she was.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਲਲਿਤਭਾਵਵਿਲਾਸਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਤ੍ਮਭਿਰ੍ਯੁਵਤਿਭਿਃ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਰੋਦ੍ਧੁਮਪਾਰਿਤਾ ।
ਸ੍ਤਨਮਸੌ ਭਵਨਾਂਤਨਿਸ਼ੇਦੁਸ਼ੀ ਪ੍ਰਦਦੁਸ਼ੀ ਭਵਤੇ ਕਪਟਾਤ੍ਮਨੇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਲਲਿਤ-ਭਾਵ-ਵਿਲਾਸ- - by her charming appearance and graceful movements; ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਆਤ੍ਮਭਿਃ-ਯੁਵਤਿਭਿਃ - with captivated minds, the young women; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਰੋਦ੍ਧੁਮ੍-ਅਪਾਰਿਤਾ - to deter (stop) not being able; ਸ੍ਤਨਮ੍-ਅਸੌ - her breasts this (Pootanaa); ਭਵਨ-ਅਂਤ-ਨਿਸ਼ੇਦੁਸ਼ੀ - inside the house sitting; ਪ੍ਰਦਦੁਸ਼ੀ ਭਵਤੇ - gave (her breasts) to Thee; ਕਪਟ-ਆਤ੍ਮਨੇ - the illusive child;
Translation
Her charming appearance and graceful movements captivated the minds of the Gopis who were unable to stop her from making advances. So this Pootanaa took her seat inside the house as she applied Thee, the illusive child, to her breasts.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸਮਧਿਰੁਹ੍ਯ ਤਦਂਕਮਸ਼ਂਕਿਤਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਮਥ ਬਾਲਕਲੋਪਨਰੋਸ਼ਿਤਃ ।
ਮਹਦਿਵਾਮ੍ਰਫਲਂ ਕੁਚਮਂਡਲਂ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਚੁਚੂਸ਼ਿਥ ਦੁਰ੍ਵਿਸ਼ਦੂਸ਼ਿਤਮ੍ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਸਮਧਿਰੁਹ੍ਯ ਤਤ੍-ਅਂਕਮ੍- - climbing in her lap; ਅਸ਼ਂਕਿਤਃ-ਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਅਥ - unhesitatingly Thou then; ਬਾਲਕ-ਲੋਪਨ-ਰੋਸ਼ਿਤਃ - by the children' killing angered; ਮਹਤ੍-ਇਵ-ਆਮ੍ਰ-ਫਲਮ੍ - huge, as if it were a mango fruit; ਕੁਚ-ਮਂਡਲਂ ਪ੍ਰਤਿ-ਚੁਚੂਸ਼ਿਥ - the breast, sucked well; ਦੁਰ੍ਵਿਸ਼-ਦੂਸ਼ਿਤਮ੍ - with strong poison smeared;
Translation
Thou who were angered by her killing of the children, unhesitatingly climbed in her lap and sucked well her poison smeared breasts as if it were a huge mango fruit.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਸੁਭਿਰੇਵ ਸਮਂ ਧਯਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸ੍ਤਨਮਸੌ ਸ੍ਤਨਿਤੋਪਮਨਿਸ੍ਵਨਾ ।
ਨਿਰਪਤਦ੍ਭਯਦਾਯਿ ਨਿਜਂ ਵਪੁਃ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਗਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸਾਰ੍ਯ ਭੁਜਾਵੁਭੌ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਅਸੁਭਿਃ-ਏਵ ਸਮਮ੍ - her life breath along with; ਧਯਤਿ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸ੍ਤਨਮ੍- - sucking (when) Thou were the breast; ਅਸੌ ਸ੍ਤਨਿਤ-ਉਪਮ-ਨਿਸ੍ਵਨਾ - this Pootanaa, with thunder like noise; ਨਿਰਪਤਤ੍- - fell down; ਭਯਦਾਯਿ ਨਿਜਂ ਵਪੁਃ - ferocious her own body; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਗਤਾ - reverting to; ਪ੍ਰਵਿਸਾਰ੍ਯ ਭੁਜੌ-ਉਭੌ - out stretching both the hands;
Translation
Thou sucked the breast along with her life force. This Pootanaa fell down with a thunder like noise reverting to her natural ferocious body with both hands stretching out.

ਭਯਦਘੋਸ਼ਣਭੀਸ਼ਣਵਿਗ੍ਰਹਸ਼੍ਰਵਣਦਰ੍ਸ਼ਨਮੋਹਿਤਵਲ੍ਲਵੇ ।
ਵ੍ਰਜਪਦੇ ਤਦੁਰਃਸ੍ਥਲਖੇਲਨਂ ਨਨੁ ਭਵਂਤਮਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਣਤ ਗੋਪਿਕਾਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਭਯਦ-ਘੋਸ਼ਣ- - the terrifying sound; ਭੀਸ਼ਣ-ਵਿਗ੍ਰਹ- - and the frightful form; ਸ਼੍ਰਵਣ-ਦਰ੍ਸ਼ਨ- - hearing and seeing; ਮੋਹਿਤ-ਵਲ੍ਲਵੇ - (which) stunned the gopas; ਵ੍ਰਜਪਦੇ - and (the whole of) Gokul; ਤਤ੍-ਉਦਰਃ-ਸ੍ਥਲ- - on her chest; ਖੇਲਨਂ ਨਨੁ - playing indeed; ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਣਤ - Thee picked up; ਗੋਪਿਕਾਃ - the Gopis;
Translation
The whole of Gokul stood stunned hearing the terrifying sound and seeing the frightful form. The Gopis picked Thee up even as Thou were playing on the chest of the dead demoness.

ਭੁਵਨਮਂਗਲਨਾਮਭਿਰੇਵ ਤੇ ਯੁਵਤਿਭਿਰ੍ਬਹੁਧਾ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਰਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਃ ।
ਤ੍ਵਮਯਿ ਵਾਤਨਿਕੇਤਨਨਾਥ ਮਾਮਗਦਯਨ੍ ਕੁਰੁ ਤਾਵਕਸੇਵਕਮ੍ ॥10॥

ਭੁਵਨ-ਮਂਗਲ- - O Thou who confers auspiciousness on the world!; ਨਾਮਭਿਃ-ਏਵ ਤੇ - by Thy name alone; ਯੁਵਤਿਭਿਃ-ਬਹੁਧਾ - by the young women, in various ways; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਰਕ੍ਸ਼ਣਃ ਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਅਯਿ - Thou were protected, O Thou!; ਵਾਤਨਿਕੇਤਨਨਾਥ - Lord of Guruvaayur!; ਮਾਮ੍-ਅਗਦਯਨ੍ - making me devoid of ailments; ਕੁਰੁ ਤਾਵਕ-ਸੇਵਕਮ੍ - make me Thy devotee;
Translation
O Thou! Who confers auspiciousness on to the world, the young women protected Thee in various ways with chanting Thy names alone. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Making me devoid of my ailments, make me Thy devotee.
