ਏਕਦਾ ਦਧਿਵਿਮਾਥਕਾਰਿਣੀਂ ਮਾਤਰਂ ਸਮੁਪਸੇਦਿਵਾਨ੍ ਭਵਾਨ੍ ।
ਸ੍ਤਨ੍ਯਲੋਲੁਪਤਯਾ ਨਿਵਾਰਯਨ੍ਨਂਕਮੇਤ੍ਯ ਪਪਿਵਾਨ੍ ਪਯੋਧਰੌ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਏਕਦਾ - once; ਦਧਿ-ਵਿਮਾਥ-ਕਾਰਿਣੀਂ - the curd churning as she was; ਮਾਤਰਂ - Thy mother; ਸਮੁਪਸੇਦਿਵਾਨ੍ ਭਵਾਨ੍ - approached Thou; ਸ੍ਤਨ੍ਯ-ਲੋਲੁਪਤਯਾ - breast milk desiring; ਨਿਵਾਰਯਨ੍- - obstructing (the churning); ਅਂਕਮ੍-ਏਤ੍ਯ - up (her) lap climbing; ਪਪਿਵਾਨ੍ ਪਯੋਧਰੌ - (Thou) sucked her breasts;
Translation
Once when Thy mother was churning the curd, Thou approached her in the eagerness to be breast fed. Obstructing her churning Thou climbed up her lap and sucked at her breasts.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਰ੍ਧਪੀਤਕੁਚਕੁਡ੍ਮਲੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸ੍ਨਿਗ੍ਧਹਾਸਮਧੁਰਾਨਨਾਂਬੁਜੇ ।
ਦੁਗ੍ਧਮੀਸ਼ ਦਹਨੇ ਪਰਿਸ੍ਰੁਤਂ ਧਰ੍ਤੁਮਾਸ਼ੁ ਜਨਨੀ ਜਗਾਮ ਤੇ ॥2॥
Meaning
ਅਰ੍ਧਪੀਤ- - having half drunk; ਕੁਚਕੁਡ੍ਮਲੇ - the breasts lotus bud like; ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਸ੍ਨਿਗ੍ਧ-ਹਾਸ- - (when) Thee with a charming smile; ਮਧੁਰ-ਆਨਨ-ਅਂਬੁਜੇ - on the sweet face, lotus like; ਦੁਗ੍ਧਮ੍-ਈਸ਼ - the milk, O Lord!; ਦਹਨੇ ਪਰਿਸ੍ਰੁਤਂ - on the fire, having overflown; ਧਰ੍ਤੁਮ੍-ਆਸ਼ੁ - to hold it, fast; ਜਨਨੀ ਜਗਾਮ ਤੇ - mother went away, Thy;
Translation
O Lord! Thou had half-way sucked her lotus bud like breasts, with a charming smile playing on the sweet lotus like face. Just then, Thy mother went away in a haste to quickly hold the milk which had overflown on the fire.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸਾਮਿਪੀਤਰਸਭਂਗਸਂਗਤਕ੍ਰੋਧਭਾਰਪਰਿਭੂਤਚੇਤਸਾ।
ਮਂਥਦਂਡਮੁਪਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ ਪਾਟਿਤਂ ਹਂਤ ਦੇਵ ਦਧਿਭਾਜਨਂ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਸਾਮਿ-ਪੀਤ- - half drunk, (so); ਰਸ-ਭਂਗ-ਸਂਗਤ- - the joy being interrupted, as a result; ਕ੍ਰੋਧ-ਭਾਰ- - angered greatly; ਪਰਿਭੂਤ-ਚੇਤਸਾ - with the mind overcome; ਮਂਥ-ਦਂਡਮ੍- - the churning rod; ਉਪਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ ਪਾਟਿਤਂ - taking up, was broken; ਹਂਤ ਦੇਵ - Oh! O Lord!; ਦਧਿ-ਭਾਜਨਂ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ - the curd pot by Thee;
Translation
O Lord! Having drunk half way, and as a result the joy being interrupted, Thy mind was overcome with great rage. Oh! Then taking up the churning rod, the curd pot was broken by Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਉਚ੍ਚਲਦ੍ਧ੍ਵਨਿਤਮੁਚ੍ਚਕੈਸ੍ਤਦਾ ਸਨ੍ਨਿਸ਼ਮ੍ਯ ਜਨਨੀ ਸਮਾਦ੍ਰੁਤਾ ।
ਤ੍ਵਦ੍ਯਸ਼ੋਵਿਸਰਵਦ੍ਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ ਸਾ ਸਦ੍ਯ ਏਵ ਦਧਿ ਵਿਸ੍ਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤੌ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਉਚ੍ਚਲਤ੍-ਧ੍ਵਨਿਤਮ੍- - by the loud sound; ਉਚ੍ਚਕੈਃ-ਤਦਾ - rising high then; ਸਨ੍ਨਿਸ਼ਮ੍ਯ - hearing; ਜਨਨੀ ਸਮਾਦ੍ਰੁਤਾ - Thy mother hastily came running; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਯਸ਼ਃ-ਵਿਸਰਃ- - Thy fame spreading; ਵਤ੍-ਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ ਸਾ - as though, she saw; ਸਦ੍ਯ ਏਵ ਦਧਿ - right then the curd; ਵਿਸ੍ਤ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤੌ - spreading on the floor;
Translation
Thy mother came running when she heard the loud sound rising of the pot being broken. Right then she saw the curd spreading on the floor,even like Thy pure unblemished fame spreading in the universe.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵੇਦਮਾਰ੍ਗਪਰਿਮਾਰ੍ਗਿਤਂ ਰੁਸ਼ਾ ਤ੍ਵਮਵੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਪਰਿਮਾਰ੍ਗਯਂਤ੍ਯਸੌ ।
ਸਂਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ ਸੁਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਨ੍ਯੁਲੂਖਲੇ ਦੀਯਮਾਨਨਵਨੀਤਮੋਤਵੇ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਵੇਦਮਾਰ੍ਗ-ਪਰਿਮਾਰ੍ਗਿਤਂ - through the path of the Vedas, sought after; ਰੁਸ਼ਾ ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍-ਅਵੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ - the angered (Yashodaa), Thee not seeing; ਪਰਿਮਾਰ੍ਗਯਂਤੀ- - searching (Thee); ਅਸੌ ਸਂਦਦਰ੍ਸ਼ - she saw; ਸੁਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਨੀ- - the fortunate one (Yashodaa); ਉਲੂਖਲੇ - (Thee) on the mortar; ਦੀਯਮਾਨ-ਨਵਨੀਤਮ੍- - giving butter; ਓਤਵੇ - to the cat;
Translation
Thou who are sought after through the path of the Vedas, were not seen anywhere by Thy angered mother. She, the fortunate one searched everywhere and saw Thee sitting on the mortar feeding butter to the cat.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ ਬਤ ਭੀਤਿਭਾਵਨਾਭਾਸੁਰਾਨਨਸਰੋਜਮਾਸ਼ੁ ਸਾ ।
ਰੋਸ਼ਰੂਸ਼ਿਤਮੁਖੀ ਸਖੀਪੁਰੋ ਬਂਧਨਾਯ ਰਸ਼ਨਾਮੁਪਾਦਦੇ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਗ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹ੍ਯ ਬਤ - Thee getting hold of, Oh!; ਭੀਤਿ-ਭਾਵਨਾ- - by the expression of fear; ਭਾਸੁਰ-ਆਨਨ-ਸਰੋਜਮ੍- - the shining face which was lotus like; ਆਸ਼ੁ ਸਾ - hastily she; ਰੋਸ਼-ਰੂਸ਼ਿਤ-ਮੁਖੀ - quivering with anger faced (she); ਸਖੀ-ਪੁਰਃ - in front of her friends; ਬਂਧਨਾਯ - to tie up Thee; ਰਸ਼ਨਾਮ੍-ਉਪਾਦਦੇ - a rope took;
Translation
Oh! Yashodaa with her face quivering due to anger, hastily caught hold of Thee whose lotus like face was looking very sweet with pretended fear. As her friends watched, she took a rope to tie Thee up.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਬਂਧੁਮਿਚ੍ਛਤਿ ਯਮੇਵ ਸਜ੍ਜਨਸ੍ਤਂ ਭਵਂਤਮਯਿ ਬਂਧੁਮਿਚ੍ਛਤੀ ।
ਸਾ ਨਿਯੁਜ੍ਯ ਰਸ਼ਨਾਗੁਣਾਨ੍ ਬਹੂਨ੍ ਦ੍ਵ੍ਯਂਗੁਲੋਨਮਖਿਲਂ ਕਿਲੈਕ੍ਸ਼ਤ ॥7॥
Meaning
ਬਂਧੁਮ੍-ਇਚ੍ਛਤਿ - as a friend,(who is) desired; ਯਮ੍-ਏਵ ਸਜ੍ਜਨਃ- - him alone , good people; ਤਂ ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਅਯਿ - That Thee O Lord!; ਬਂਧੁਮ੍-ਇਚ੍ਛਤੀ - to tie desiring; ਸਾ ਨਿਯੁਜ੍ਯ - she using (tying together); ਰਸ਼ਨਾ-ਗੁਣਾਨ੍ ਬਹੂਨ੍ - pieces of rope, many; ਦ੍ਵ੍ਯਂਗੁਲ-ਊਨਮ੍- - by two fingers (long), short; ਅਖਿਲਂ - the whole length; ਕਿਲ-ਐਕ੍ਸ਼ਤ - indeed found;
Translation
All good men want to bind themselves to Thee alone in devotion. That Thou O Lord! Yashodaa desiring to tie, found the length of the rope short by two fingers, even though she attached many pieces of ropes to lengthen it.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਿਸ੍ਮਿਤੋਤ੍ਸ੍ਮਿਤਸਖੀਜਨੇਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਾਂ ਸ੍ਵਿਨ੍ਨਸਨ੍ਨਵਪੁਸ਼ਂ ਨਿਰੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਤਾਮ੍ ।
ਨਿਤ੍ਯਮੁਕ੍ਤਵਪੁਰਪ੍ਯਹੋ ਹਰੇ ਬਂਧਮੇਵ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਯਾਨ੍ਵਮਨ੍ਯਥਾਃ ॥8॥
Meaning
ਵਿਸ੍ਮਿਤ੍-ਉਤ੍ਸ੍ਮਿਤ- - wonderstruck and smiling; ਸਖੀਜਨ-ਈਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਾਂ - the friends (Gopis) watching; ਸ੍ਵਿਨ੍ਨ-ਸਨ੍ਨ-ਵਪੁਸ਼ਂ - (she, with) perspiring and exhausted body; ਨਿਰੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਤਾਮ੍ - seeing her (Yashodaa); ਨਿਤ੍ਯ-ਮੁਕ੍ਤ-ਵਪੁਃ- - forever free bodied; ਅਪਿ-ਅਹੋ ਹਰੇ - though O Hari! (Thou); ਬਂਧਮ੍-ਏਵ - bondage alone; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਯਾ-ਅਨ੍ਵਮਨ੍ਯਥਾਃ - compassionately accepted;
Translation
As Thy mother's friends were smilingly watching with wonder, Thou saw her body perspiring and exhausted due to the effort. O Hari! Thou who are the ever-free Being, out of compassion accepted the bondage.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ੍ਥੀਯਤਾਂ ਚਿਰਮੁਲੂਖਲੇ ਖਲੇਤ੍ਯਾਗਤਾ ਭਵਨਮੇਵ ਸਾ ਯਦਾ।
ਪ੍ਰਾਗੁਲੂਖਲਬਿਲਾਂਤਰੇ ਤਦਾ ਸਰ੍ਪਿਰਰ੍ਪਿਤਮਦਨ੍ਨਵਾਸ੍ਥਿਥਾਃ ॥9॥
Meaning
ਸ੍ਥੀਯਤਾਂ - (may you) stay here; ਚਿਰਮ੍-ਉਲੂਖਲੇ - for long at the mortar; ਖਲ-ਇਤਿ- - O rouge, thus (saying); ਆਗਤਾ ਭਵਨਮ੍-ਏਵ - (when she) returned to the house only; ਸਾ ਯਦਾ ਪ੍ਰਾਕ੍- - she when, earlier; ਉਲੂਖਲ-ਬਿਲਾਂਤਰੇ - in the mortar's cavity; ਤਦਾ ਸਰ੍ਪਿਃ-ਅਰ੍ਪਿਤਮ੍- - then, the butter which was placed; ਅਦਨ੍-ਅਵਾਸ੍ਥਿਥਾਃ - eating Thou stayed;
Translation
As Yashodaa went back into the house, she said 'O Rogue! stay tied like this to the mortar for long.' Thou stayed there eating the butter which Thou had earlier placed in the cavity of the mortar.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯਦ੍ਯਪਾਸ਼ਸੁਗਮੋ ਵਿਭੋ ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਸਂਯਤਃ ਕਿਮੁ ਸਪਾਸ਼ਯਾਨਯਾ ।
ਏਵਮਾਦਿ ਦਿਵਿਜੈਰਭਿਸ਼੍ਟੁਤੋ ਵਾਤਨਾਥ ਪਰਿਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਂ ਗਦਾਤ੍ ॥10॥
Meaning
ਯਦਿ-ਅਪਾਸ਼-ਸੁਗਮਃ - if (Thou are) to the desire less easily attainable; ਵਿਭੋ ਭਵਾਨ੍ - O All pervading Being! Thou; ਸਂਯਤਃ ਕਿਮੁ - were tied down, how come; ਸਪਾਸ਼ਯਾ-ਅਨਯਾ - (who was) having a rope, by her (Yashodaa); ਏਵਮ੍-ਆਦਿ - thus and so forth; ਦਿਵਿਜੈਃ-ਅਭਿਸ਼੍ਟੁਤਃ - by the gods in heaven praised; ਵਾਤਨਾਥ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ਪਰਿਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਂ ਗਦਾਤ੍ - save me from my ailments.;
Translation
O All Pervading Being! If Thou are easily attainable to the desire less (a-paash) people, who are not bound by desire, how was it that Yashodaa was able to secure Thee with a (paash) rope for binding. Thou whose glories were thus sung by the gods in the heaven, O Lord of Guruvaayur! May Thou save me from my ailments.
