ਧ੍ਯਾਯਂਤ੍ਯਾਃ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦਿਨਵਾਸਸਜ੍ਜਿਕਾਯਾਃ ॥1॥
Meaning
ਸੈਰਂਧ੍ਰ੍ਯਾਃ- - of Sairandhree (the female who gave Thee unguents); ਤਦਨੁ ਚਿਰਂ - thereafter, since long; ਸ੍ਮਰ-ਆਤੁਰਾਯਾ - by Kaama Deva who was afflicted; ਯਾਤਃ-ਅਭੂਃ - (Thou) went; ਸੁਲਲਿਤਮ੍- - well adorned; ਉਦ੍ਧਵੇਨ ਸਾਰ੍ਧਮ੍ - with Uddhava; ਆਵਾਸਂ - to (her) house; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਉਪਗਮ-ਉਤ੍ਸਵਂ - Thy arriving festival; ਸਦਾ-ਏਵ - always alone; ਧ੍ਯਾਯਂਤ੍ਯਾਃ - she was thinking of; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਦਿਨ-ਵਾਸ-ਸਜ੍ਜਿਕਾਯਾਃ - (and so) everyday adorned herself and decorated her house;
Translation
Thou went well adorned with Uddhava to the house of Sairandhree, the female attendant who had given Thee unguents and was long stricken with love for Thee. She was thinking of Thee every day and adorned herself and decorated her house everyday in the expectation of the festive event of meeting Thee.

ਉਪਗਤੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ ਪੂਰ੍ਣਮਨੋਰਥਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਮਦਸਂਭ੍ਰਮਕਂਪ੍ਰਪਯੋਧਰਾਮ੍ ।
ਵਿਵਿਧਮਾਨਨਮਾਦਧਤੀਂ ਮੁਦਾ ਰਹਸਿ ਤਾਂ ਰਮਯਾਂਚਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੇ ਸੁਖਮ੍ ॥2॥

ਉਪਗਤੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਿ - at Thy arrival; ਪੂਰ੍ਣਮਨੋਰਥਾਮ੍ - her wish fulfilled; ਪ੍ਰਮਦ-ਸਂਭ੍ਰਮ- - with joy and excitement; ਕਂਪ੍ਰ-ਪਯੋਧਰਾਮ੍ - whose breasts were quivering; ਵਿਵਿਧ-ਮਾਨਨਮ੍- - various honours; ਆਦਧਤੀਂ ਮੁਦਾ - who was offering joyfully; ਰਹਸਿ ਤਾਂ - secretly to her; ਰਮਯਾਨ੍-ਚਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੇ - (Thou) delighted her; ਸੁਖਮ੍ - happily;
Translation
At Thy arrival, all her wishes were fulfilled and she joyfully honoured Thee with various offerings, with her breasts heaving in excitement. Thou happily delighted her in privacy.

ਸਾਮੀਪ੍ਯਮਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਨਿਸ਼ਮਿਤ੍ਯਪਿ ਨਾਬ੍ਰਵੀਤ੍ ਕਿਮ੍ ॥3॥
Meaning
ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਾ ਵਰਂ - asked what boon she wanted; ਪੁਨਃ-ਅਸੌ- - then at that time, this (pitiable woman); ਅਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣੋਤ੍-ਵਰਾਕੀ - asked for, the pitiable one; ਭੂਯਃ-ਤ੍ਵਯਾ - again with Thee; ਸੁਰਤਮ੍-ਏਵ - enjoyment only; ਨਿਸ਼ਾ-ਅਂਤਰੇਸ਼ੁ - on other nights; ਸਾਯੁਜ੍ਯਮ੍-ਅਸ੍ਤੁ- - let me have union with Thee; ਇਤਿ ਵਦੇਤ੍ ਬੁਧ ਏਵ - thus will say an enlightened one only; ਕਾਮਂ - definitely; ਸਾਮੀਪ੍ਯਮ੍-ਅਸ੍ਤੁ-ਅਨਿਸ਼ਮ੍- - let me have nearness with Thee always; ਇਤਿ-ਅਪਿ- - thus also; ਨ-ਅਬ੍ਰਵੀਤ੍ ਕਿਮ੍ - did not say, how come (why);
Translation
When she was asked by Thee as to what boon she wanted, the stupid woman prayed that she may get to enjoy in the same manner with Thee on other nights also. Indeed only an enlightened person will ask for 'Saayujya' (becoming one with Thee) liberation. But at least she could ask for 'Saamipya' (being always close to Thee). How come she did not ask for even that!
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਤਤੋ ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਦੇਵ ਨਿਸ਼ਾਸੁ ਕਾਸੁਚਿਨ੍ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗੀਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਂ ਤਾਂ ਨਿਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ ਵਿਨੋਦਯਨ੍ ।
ਅਦਾਦੁਪਸ਼੍ਲੋਕ ਇਤਿ ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਂ ਸੁਤਂ ਸ ਨਾਰਦਾਤ੍ ਸਾਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤਤਂਤ੍ਰਵਿਦ੍ਬਬਭੌ ॥4॥
Meaning
ਤਤਃ ਭਵਾਨ੍ ਦੇਵ - then, Thou O Effulgent One!; ਨਿਸ਼ਾਸੁ ਕਾਸੁਚਿਤ੍- - on some nights; ਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗੀਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਂ ਤਾਂ ਨਿਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਂ - her, the doe eyed one, in secret; ਵਿਨੋਦਯਨ੍ ਅਦਾਤ੍- - giving delight, gave; ਉਪਸ਼੍ਲੋਕ ਇਤਿ - Upashloka named; ਸ਼੍ਰੁਤਂ ਸੁਤਂ - well known son; ਸ ਨਾਰਦਾਤ੍ - he (the son) from Naarada; ਸਾਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤ-ਤਂਤ੍ਰ-ਵਿਦ੍ ਬਭੌ - in the (knowledge of) Saatvata Tantra became well versed;
Translation
O Lord! Subsequently Thou on some nights delighted the doe eyed one in secret. Thou gave her a son who came to be well known as Upashloka. He learnt the knowledge in Saattvat Tantra from Naarada and shone as an exponent there of.

ਅਕ੍ਰੂਰ-ਮਂਦਿਰਮ੍- - to Akrura's house; ਇਤਃ-ਅਥ - going then; ਬਲ-ਉਦ੍ਧਵਾਭ੍ਯਾਮ੍- - with Balaraama and Uddhava; ਅਭ੍ਯਰ੍ਚਿਤਃ ਬਹੁ ਨੁਤਃ - honoured (and) very much praised; ਮੁਦਿਤੇਨ ਤੇਨ - by him (Akrura) who was very delighted; ਏਨਂ ਵਿਸ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਜ੍ਯ - him (Akrura) sending away; ਵਿਪਿਨ-ਆਗਤ- - from the forest having returned; ਪਾਂਡਵੇਯ-ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਤਂ - the Paandava's news; ਵਿਵੇਦਿਥ ਤਥਾ - come to know and; ਧ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਰਾਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਰ-ਚੇਸ਼੍ਟਾਮ੍ - Dhritaraashtraa's doings;
Translation
Thou went with Balaraama and Uddhava to Akrura's house. Akrura received Thee with high honours and worshipped Thee with hymns. Thou sent away Akrura to gather the news of the Pandavaas who had returned from the forest and also news about Dhritaraashtra's doings.

ਵਿਘਾਤਾਜ੍ਜਾਮਾਤੁਃ ਪਰਮਸੁਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦੋ ਭੋਜਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਤੇ-

ਵਿਘਾਤਾਤ੍-ਜਾਮਾਤੁਃ - by the slaying of the son in law; ਪਰਮ-ਸੁਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਃ - and great friend; ਭੋਜ-ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪਤੇਃ- - the king of Bhoja (Kansa); ਜਰਾਸਂਧੇ ਰੁਂਧਤਿ- - when Jaraasandha besieged (Mathura); ਅਨਵਧਿ-ਰੁਸ਼ਾ-ਅਂਧੇ- - blinded by unbounded rage; ਅਥ ਮਥੁਰਾਮ੍ - then Mathura; ਰਥ-ਆਦ੍ਯੈਃ-ਦ੍ਯੋਃ-ਲਬ੍ਧੈਃ - with the chariot etc.from the heaven obtained; ਕਤਿਪਯ-ਬਲਃ-ਤ੍ਵਂ - with a few soldiers, Thou; ਬਲ-ਯੁਤਃ- - along with Balaraama; ਤ੍ਰਯਃ-ਵਿਂਸ਼ਤਿ-ਅਕ੍ਸ਼ੌਹਿਣਿ - 23 akshauhini (army); ਤਤ੍-ਉਪਨੀਤਂ ਸਮਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਾਃ - brought by him, destroyed;
Translation
Jaraasandha was blinded with rage when his friend and son in law Kansa was killed. He besieged Mathura. Along with Balaraama, and a few soldiers, chariot and charioteer called from heaven Thou destroyed his army of 23 Akshauhini brought by him.

ਬਦ੍ਧਂ ਬਲਾਤ੍-ਅਥ - tied up forcefully then; ਬਲੇਨ ਬਲੋਤ੍ਤਰਂ - by Balaraama (him) who was of extraordinary strength; ਤ੍ਵਂ ਭੂਯਃ - Thou again; ਬਲ-ਉਦ੍ਯਮ-ਰਸੇਨ - wanting (him Jaraasandha) to come back with an army to fight; ਮੁਮੋਚਿਥ-ਏਨਂ - released him; ਨਿਸ਼੍ਸ਼ੇਸ਼-ਦਿਕ੍- - of all the directions; ਜਯ-ਸਮਾਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ- - conquering and obtaining; ਵਿਸ਼੍ਵ-ਸੈਨ੍ਯਾਤ੍ - the many armies; ਕਃ-ਅਨ੍ਯਃ-ਤਤਃ ਹਿ - who else than him indeed; ਬਲ-ਪੌਰੁਸ਼ਵਾਨ੍- - more strong and powerful; ਤਦਾਨੀਮ੍ - at that time;
Translation
Jaraasandha of extraordinary strength was forcefully tied up by Balaraama. Thou wanted him to come back with an army, so Thou released him. At that time there was no one more powerful than him for having conquered all the kings in all the directions and who commandeered their armies.

Meaning
ਭਗ੍ਨਃ ਸ - broken, he; ਲਗ੍ਨ-ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਯਃ-ਅਪਿ - and with a defeated heart also; ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪੈਃ ਪ੍ਰਣੁਨ੍ਨਃ - by the kings prompted; ਯੁਦ੍ਧਂ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ਵ੍ਯਧਿਤ - battled (he) with Thee; ਸ਼ੋਡਸ਼ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਵਃ-ਏਵਂ - thus 16 times; ਅਕ੍ਸ਼ੌਹਿਣੀਃ - (with) Akshauhini armies; ਸ਼ਿਵ ਸ਼ਿਵ-ਅਸ੍ਯ - what a wonder, of his; ਜਘਂਥ - destroyed; ਵਿਸ਼੍ਣੋ - O All Pervading Lord!; ਸਂਭੂਯ - altogether; ਸ-ਏਕ-ਨਵਤਿ-ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਤਂ - one and three hundred ninety times (391); ਤਦਾਨੀਮ੍ - then (in the battles);
Translation
He was broken hearted and humiliated by defeat in the battle. He attacked Thee sixteen times prompted by the smaller kings. O Vishnu! Thou destroyed 391 of his Akshauhini armies altogether. What a wonder!

ਅਸ਼੍ਟਾਦਸ਼ੇ-ਅਸ੍ਯ - eighteenth his; ਸਮਰੇ ਸਮੁਪੇਯੁਸ਼ਿ - battle (attack) was immanent; ਤ੍ਵਂ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਵਾ ਪੁਰਃ-ਅਥ - Thou seeing him in front then; ਯਵਨਂ ਯਵਨ-ਤ੍ਰਿਕੋਟ੍ਯਾ - the Yavana king with 3 crore Yavanas; ਤ੍ਵਸ਼੍ਟ੍ਰਾ ਵਿਧਾਪ੍ਯ - by Vishwakarma getting built; ਪੁਰਮ੍-ਆਸ਼ੁ - a city, soon; ਪਯੋਧਿ-ਮਧ੍ਯੇ - in the middle of the sea; ਤਤ੍ਰ-ਅਥ ਯੋਗ-ਬਲਤਃ - there then, by Thy yogic powers; ਸ੍ਵ-ਜਨਾਨ੍-ਅਨੈਸ਼ੀਃ - Thy people took (there);
Translation
The eighteenth attack by Jaraasandha was immanent and Thou saw the Yavana king in front with 3 crore Yavanas. Thou soon got a city built in the middle of the sea by Vishwakarmaa and had Thy people transferred there, by Thy Yogic power.

ਪਦਭ੍ਯਾਂ ਤ੍ਵਂ - by foot Thou; ਪਦ੍ਮਮਾਲੀ - adorning a lotus garland; ਚਕਿਤ ਇਵ - feigning fright (surprise); ਪੁਰਾਤ੍-ਨਿਰ੍ਗਤਃ ਧਾਵਮਾਨਃ - from the city went out running; ਮ੍ਲੇਚ੍ਛ-ਈਸ਼ੇਨ-ਅਨੁਯਾਤਃ - by the Yavana king, being followed (pursued); ਵਧ-ਸੁਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ-ਵਿਹੀਨੇਨ - being killed, of meritorious deeds devoid of; ਸ਼ੈਲੇ ਨ੍ਯਲੈਸ਼ੀਃ - into the mountain was led; ਸੁਪ੍ਤੇਨ-ਅਂਘ੍ਰ੍ਯਾ-ਹਤੇਨ - by him who was sleeping, was with foot kicked; ਦ੍ਰੁਤਮ੍-ਅਥ ਮੁਚੁਕੁਂਦੇਨ - soon then by Muchukunda; ਭਸ੍ਮੀ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ-ਅਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ - to ashes reduced when he was (Jaraasandha); ਭੂਪਾਯ-ਅਸ੍ਮੈ ਗੁਹਾਂਤੇ - for this king, in the cave; ਸੁਲਲਿਤ-ਵਪੁਸ਼ਾ - with a charming form; ਤਸ੍ਥਿਸ਼ੇ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਭਾਜੇ - manifested (Thou) for the devout;
Translation
Adorned with a lotus garland, Thou ran from the city on foot feigning fright and surprise. The Yavana king who was devoid of meritorious deeds, in order to be blessed by being killed by Thee, pursued Thee. Thou then led him into the cave of a mountain, where king Muchukund lay asleep. Mistaking the king for Thee, the Yavana kicked him and was instantly reduced to ashes by the angry look of the awakened king. Thou then manifested Thyself in a charming form for the benefit of the devout king.

ਐਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਵਾਕਃ-ਅਹਂ - of the Ikshwaaku dynasty I (am); ਵਿਰਕ੍ਤਃ-ਅਸ੍ਮਿ- - dispassionate (I) am; ਅਖਿਲ-ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਪ-ਸੁਖੇ - in the many royal pleasures; ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦ- - Thy grace; ਐਕ-ਕਾਂਕ੍ਸ਼ੀ - alone am desiring; ਹਾ ਦੇਵ-ਇਤਿ - O Lord! Thus; ਸ੍ਤੁਵਂਤਮ੍ - him who was praising Thee; ਵਰ-ਵਿਤਤਿਸ਼ੁ ਤਂ ਨਿਸ੍ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਹਮ੍ - for the multitudes of boons him desire less; ਵੀਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਯਨ੍ - seeing and so gladdened (Thou); ਮੁਕ੍ਤੇਃ-ਤੁਲ੍ਯਾਂ ਚ ਭਕ੍ਤਿਂ - liberation, like, and Bhakti; ਧੁਤ-ਸਕਲ-ਮਲਾਂ - (which) washes off all sins; ਮੋਕ੍ਸ਼ਮ੍-ਅਪਿ-ਆਸ਼ੁ ਦਤ੍ਵਾ - liberation also soon conferred; ਕਾਰ੍ਯਂ ਹਿਂਸਾ-ਵਿਸ਼ੁਦ੍ਧ੍ਯੈ - should do (penance) for purifying the deed of having caused pain; ਤਪ ਇਤਿ ਚ ਤਦਾ - penance thus and then; ਪ੍ਰਾਤ੍ਥ ਲੋਕ-ਪ੍ਰਤੀਤ੍ਯੈ - (Thou) said for the world's instruction;
Translation
I am of the Ikshwaaku dynasty, O Lord! I am dispassionate towards the many royal pleasures. My only desire is for Thy grace.' Thus he said praising Thee. Thou were greatly gladdened to see that the king did not seek any of the multitude of boons. Thou conferred on him Bhakti which is as good as or equal to Mukti (liberation). Thou also conferred on him liberation which washes off all sins. Yet to set an example for the world, Thou told him to do penance to purify the deeds of having caused pain to people during his rule.

ਤਦਨੁ ਮਥੁਰਾਂ ਗਤ੍ਵਾ ਹਤ੍ਵਾ ਚਮੂਂ ਯਵਨਾਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਂ
ਮਗਧਪਤਿਨਾ ਮਾਰ੍ਗੇ ਸੈਨ੍ਯੈਃ ਪੁਰੇਵ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਤਃ ।
ਚਰਮਵਿਜਯਂ ਦਰ੍ਪਾਯਾਸ੍ਮੈ ਪ੍ਰਦਾਯ ਪਲਾਯਿਤੋ
ਜਲਧਿਨਗਰੀਂ ਯਾਤੋ ਵਾਤਾਲਯੇਸ਼੍ਵਰ ਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ ॥12॥
Meaning
ਤਦਨੁ ਮਥੁਰਾਂ ਗਤ੍ਵਾ - there after going to Mathura; ਹਤ੍ਵਾ ਚਮੂਂ - destroying the army; ਯਵਨ-ਆਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਾਂ - brought by the Yavana; ਮਗਧਪਤਿਨਾ - by the king of Magadha (Jaraasandha); ਮਾਰ੍ਗੇ ਸੈਨ੍ਯੈਃ ਪੁਰਾ-ਇਵ - on the way with armies like before; ਨਿਵਾਰਿਤਃ - being stopped; ਚਰਮ-ਵਿਜਯਮ੍ - the last victory; ਦਰ੍ਪਾਯ-ਅਸ੍ਮੈ - for (his) pride for him; ਪ੍ਰਦਾਯ ਪਲਾਯਿਤਃ - giving (and) fleeing; ਜਲਧਿ-ਨਗਰੀਂ ਯਾਤਃ - to the ocean city (Dwaarakaa) went; ਵਾਤਾਲਯੇਸ਼੍ਵਰ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ਪਾਹਿ ਮਾਮ੍ - save me;
Translation
After that, going to Mathura Thou destroyed the army brought by the Yavana while on Thy way, like before, the armies of the king of Magadha (Jaraasandha) obstructed Thee. To inflate his pride, Thou gave him the last (eighteenth) victory by fleeing to the ocean city of Dwaarakaa. O Lord of Guruvaayur! save me.
