ਅਸਂਸ਼ਯਂ ਸਮਗ੍ਰਂ ਮਾਂ ਯਥਾ ਜ੍ਞਾਸ੍ਯਸਿ ਤਚ੍ਛ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣੁ ॥ 1 ॥

ਸ਼੍ਰੀ-ਭਗਵਾਨ੍ ਉਵਾਚ — the Supreme Lord said; ਮਯਿ — to Me; ਆਸਕ੍ਤ-ਮਨਾਃ — mind attached; ਪਾਰ੍ਥ — O son of Prithā; ਯੋਗਮ੍ — self-realization; ਯੁਂਜਨ੍ — practicing; ਮਤ੍-ਆਸ਼੍ਰਯਃ — in consciousness of Me (Kriṣṇa consciousness); ਅਸਂਸ਼ਯਮ੍ — without doubt; ਸਮਗ੍ਰਮ੍ — completely; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਯਥਾ — how; ਜ੍ਞਾਸ੍ਯਸਿ — you can know; ਤਤ੍ — that; ਸ਼੍ਰੁਰੁਇਣੁ — try to hear.
Translation
Sri Krishna said: Now hear, O son of Prithā, how by practicing yoga with the mind fixed on Me and taking refuge in Me, you shall know Me completely, without any doubt.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਜ੍ਞਾਨਂ ਤੇਹਂ ਸਵਿਜ੍ਞਾਨਮਿਦਂ ਵਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯਾਮ੍ਯਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਃ ।
ਯਜ੍ਜ੍ਞਾਤ੍ਵਾ ਨੇਹ ਭੂਯੋਨ੍ਯਜ੍ਜ੍ਞਾਤਵ੍ਯਮਵਸ਼ਿਸ਼੍ਯਤੇ ॥ 2 ॥

ਜ੍ਞਾਨਮ੍ — phenomenal knowledge; ਤੇ — unto you; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਸ — with; ਵਿਜ੍ਞਾਨਮ੍ — numinous knowledge; ਇਦਮ੍ — this; ਵਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯਾਮਿ — shall explain; ਅਸ਼ੇਸ਼ਤਃ — in full; ਯਤ੍ — which; ਜ੍ਞਾਤ੍ਵਾ — knowing; ਨ — not; ਇਹ — in this world; ਭੂਯਃ — further; ਅਨ੍ਯਤ੍ — anything more; ਜ੍ਞਾਤਵ੍ਯਮ੍ — knowable; ਅਵਸ਼ਿਸ਼੍ਯਤੇ — remains.
Translation
I shall tell you fully about knowledge and realization, that nothing further remains to be known in this world.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਮਨੁਸ਼੍ਯਾਣਾਂ ਸਹਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ੁ ਕਸ਼੍ਚਿਦ੍ਯਤਤਿ ਸਿਦ੍ਧਯੇ ।
ਯਤਤਾਮਪਿ ਸਿਦ੍ਧਾਨਾਂ ਕਸ਼੍ਚਿਨ੍ਮਾਂ ਵੇਤ੍ਤਿ ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤਃ ॥ 3 ॥
Meaning
ਮਨੁਸ਼੍ਯਾਣਾਮ੍ — of men; ਸਹਸ੍ਰੇਸ਼ੁ — out of many thousands; ਕਸ਼੍ਚਿਤ੍ — someone; ਯਤਤਿ — endeavors; ਸਿਦ੍ਧਯੇ — for perfection; ਯਤਤਾਮ੍ — of those so endeavoring; ਅਪਿ — indeed; ਸਿਦ੍ਧਾਨਾਮ੍ — of those who have achieved perfection; ਕਸ਼੍ਚਿਤ੍ — someone; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਵੇਤ੍ਤਿ — does know; ਤਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਤਃ — in fact.
Translation
Out of many thousands among men, one may endeavor for perfection, and of those who have achieved perfection, hardly one knows Me in truth.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਭੂਮਿਰਾਪੋਨਲੋ ਵਾਯੁਃ ਖਂ ਮਨੋ ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਰੇਵ ਚ ।
ਅਹਂਕਾਰ ਇਤੀਯਂ ਮੇ ਭਿਨ੍ਨਾ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਰਸ਼੍ਟਧਾ ॥ 4 ॥
Meaning
ਭੂਮਿਃ — earth; ਆਪਃ — water; ਅਨਲਃ — fire; ਵਾਯੁਃ — air; ਖਮ੍ — ether; ਮਨਃ — mind; ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਃ — intelligence; ਏਵ — certainly; ਚ — and; ਅਹਂਕਾਰਃ — false ego; ਇਤਿ — thus; ਇਯਮ੍ — all these; ਮੇ — My; ਭਿਨ੍ਨਾ — separated; ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਃ — energies; ਅਸ਼੍ਟਧਾ — eightfold.
Translation
Earth, water, fire, air, ether, mind, intelligence and false ego – all together these eight constitute My separated material energies.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਪਰੇਯਮਿਤਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਨ੍ਯਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਂ ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਮੇ ਪਰਾਮ੍ ।
ਜੀਵਭੂਤਾਂ ਮਹਾਬਾਹੋ ਯਯੇਦਂ ਧਾਰ੍ਯਤੇ ਜਗਤ੍ ॥ 5 ॥

ਅਪਰਾ — inferior; ਇਯਮ੍ — this; ਇਤਃ — besides this; ਤੁ — but; ਅਨ੍ਯਾਮ੍ — another; ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਮ੍ — energy; ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ — just try to understand; ਮੇ — My; ਪਰਾਮ੍ — superior; ਜੀਵ-ਭੂਤਾਮ੍ — comprising the living entities; ਮਹਾ-ਬਾਹੋ — O mighty-armed one; ਯਯਾ — by whom; ਇਦਮ੍ — this; ਧਾਰ੍ਯਤੇ — is utilized or exploited; ਜਗਤ੍ — the material world.
Translation
Besides these, O mighty-armed Arjuna, there is another, superior energy of Mine, which comprises the living entities who are exploiting the resources of this material, inferior nature.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਏਤਦ੍ਯੋਨੀਨਿ ਭੂਤਾਨਿ ਸਰ੍ਵਾਣੀਤ੍ਯੁਪਧਾਰਯ ।
ਅਹਂ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਸ੍ਯ ਜਗਤਃ ਪ੍ਰਭਵਃ ਪ੍ਰਲਯਸ੍ਤਥਾ ॥ 6 ॥
Meaning
ਏਤਤ੍ — these two natures; ਯੋਨੀਨਿ — whose source of birth; ਭੂਤਾਨਿ — everything created; ਸਰ੍ਵਾਣਿ — all; ਇਤਿ — thus; ਉਪਧਾਰਯ — know; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਸ੍ਯ — all-inclusive; ਜਗਤਃ — of the world; ਪ੍ਰਭਵਃ — the source of manifestation; ਪ੍ਰਲਯਃ — annihilation; ਤਥਾ — as well as.
Translation
All created beings have their source in these two natures. Of all that is material and all that is spiritual in this world, know for certain that I am both the origin and the dissolution.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਮਤ੍ਤਃ ਪਰਤਰਂ ਨਾਨ੍ਯਤ੍ਕਿਂਚਿਦਸ੍ਤਿ ਧਨਂਜਯ ।
ਮਯਿ ਸਰ੍ਵਮਿਦਂ ਪ੍ਰੋਤਂ ਸੂਤ੍ਰੇ ਮਣਿਗਣਾ ਇਵ ॥ 7 ॥

ਮਤ੍ਤਃ — beyond Me; ਪਰ-ਤਰਮ੍ — superior; ਨ — not; ਅਨ੍ਯਤ੍ ਕਿਂਚਿਤ੍ — anything else; ਅਸ੍ਤਿ — there is; ਧਨਮ੍-ਜਯ — O conqueror of wealth; ਮਯਿ — in Me; ਸਰ੍ਵਮ੍ — all that be; ਇਦਮ੍ — which we see; ਪ੍ਰੋਤਮ੍ — is strung; ਸੂਤ੍ਰੇ — on a thread; ਮਣਿ-ਗਣਾਃ — pearls; ਇਵ — like.
Translation
O conqueror of wealth, there is no truth superior to Me. Everything rests upon Me, as pearls are strung on a thread.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਰਸੋਹਮਪ੍ਸੁ ਕੌਂਤੇਯ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਸ੍ਮਿ ਸ਼ਸ਼ਿਸੂਰ੍ਯਯੋਃ ।
ਪ੍ਰਣਵਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਵੇਦੇਸ਼ੁ ਸ਼ਬ੍ਦਃ ਖੇ ਪੌਰੁਸ਼ਂ ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੁ ॥ 8 ॥

ਰਸਃ — taste; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਅਪ੍ਸੁ — in water; ਕੌਂਤੇਯ — O son of Kuntī; ਪ੍ਰਭਾ — the light; ਅਸ੍ਮਿ — I am; ਸ਼ਸ਼ਿ-ਸੂਰ੍ਯਯੋਃ — of the moon and the sun; ਪ੍ਰਣਵਃ — the three letters a-u-m; ਸਰ੍ਵ — in all; ਵੇਦੇਸ਼ੁ — the Vedas; ਸ਼ਬ੍ਦਃ — sound vibration; ਖੇ — in the ether; ਪੌਰੁਸ਼ਮ੍ — ability; ਨ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ੁ — in men.
Translation
O son of Kuntī, I am the taste of water, the light of the sun and the moon, the syllable oM in the Vedic mantras; I am the sound in ether and ability in man.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਪੁਣ੍ਯੋ ਗਂਧਃ ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਿਵ੍ਯਾਂ ਚ ਤੇਜਸ਼੍ਚਾਸ੍ਮਿ ਵਿਭਾਵਸੌ ।
ਜੀਵਨਂ ਸਰ੍ਵਭੂਤੇਸ਼ੁ ਤਪਸ਼੍ਚਾਸ੍ਮਿ ਤਪਸ੍ਵਿਸ਼ੁ ॥ 9 ॥

ਪੁਣ੍ਯਃ — original; ਗਂਧਃ — fragrance; ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਥਿਵ੍ਯਾਮ੍ — in the earth; ਚ — also; ਤੇਜਃ — heat; ਚ — also; ਅਸ੍ਮਿ — I am; ਵਿਭਾਵਸੌ — in the fire; ਜੀਵਨਮ੍ — life; ਸਰ੍ਵ — in all; ਭੂਤੇਸ਼ੁ — living entities; ਤਪਃ — penance; ਚ — also; ਅਸ੍ਮਿ — I am; ਤਪਸ੍ਵਿਸ਼ੁ — in those who practice penance.
Translation
I am the original fragrance of the earth, and I am the heat in fire. I am the life of all that lives, and I am the penances of all ascetics.

ਬੀਜਮ੍ — the seed; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਭੂਤਾਨਾਮ੍ — of all living entities; ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ — try to understand; ਪਾਰ੍ਥ — O son of Prithā; ਸਨਾਤਨਮ੍ — original, eternal; ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿਃ — intelligence; ਬੁਦ੍ਧਿ-ਮਤਾਮ੍ — of the intelligent; ਅਸ੍ਮਿ — I am; ਤੇਜਃ — prowess; ਤੇਜਸ੍ਵਿਨਾਮ੍ — of the powerful; ਅਹਮ੍ — I am.
Translation
O son of Prithā, know that I am the original seed of all existences, the intelligence of the intelligent, and the prowess of all powerful men.

ਬਲਂ ਬਲਵਤਾਂ ਚਾਹਂ ਕਾਮਰਾਗਵਿਵਰ੍ਜਿਤਮ੍ ।
ਧਰ੍ਮਾਵਿਰੁਦ੍ਧੋ ਭੂਤੇਸ਼ੁ ਕਾਮੋਸ੍ਮਿ ਭਰਤਰ੍ਸ਼ਭ ॥ 11 ॥
Meaning
ਬਲਮ੍ — strength; ਬਲ-ਵਤਾਮ੍ — of the strong; ਚ — and; ਅਹਮ੍ — I am; ਕਾਮ — passion; ਰਾਗ — and attachment; ਵਿਵਰ੍ਜਿਤਮ੍ — devoid of; ਧਰ੍ਮ-ਅਵਿਰੁਦ੍ਧਃ — not against religious principles; ਭੂਤੇਸ਼ੁ — in all beings; ਕਾਮਃ — sex life; ਅਸ੍ਮਿ — I am; ਭਰਤ-ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਭ — O lord of the Bhāratas.
Translation
I am the strength of the strong, devoid of passion and desire. I am sex life which is not contrary to religious principles, O lord of the Bhāratas [Arjuna].

ਯੇ ਚੈਵ ਸਾਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਿਕਾ ਭਾਵਾ ਰਾਜਸਾਸ੍ਤਾਮਸਾਸ਼੍ਚ ਯੇ ।
ਮਤ੍ਤ ਏਵੇਤਿ ਤਾਨ੍ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਵਹਂ ਤੇਸ਼ੁ ਤੇ ਮਯਿ ॥ 12 ॥

ਯੇ — all which; ਚ — and; ਏਵ — certainly; ਸਾਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਿਕਾਃ — in goodness; ਭਾਵਾਃ — states of being; ਰਾਜਸਾਃ — in the mode of passion; ਤਾਮਸਾਃ — in the mode of ignorance; ਚ — also; ਯੇ — all which; ਮਤ੍ਤਃ — from Me; ਏਵ — certainly; ਇਤਿ — thus; ਤਾਨ੍ — those; ਵਿਦ੍ਧਿ — try to know; ਨ — not; ਤੁ — but; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਤੇਸ਼ੁ — in them; ਤੇ — they; ਮਯਿ — in Me.
Translation
Know that all states of being – be they of goodness, passion or ignorance – are manifested by My energy. I am, in one sense, everything, but I am independent. I am not under the modes of material nature, for they, on the contrary, are within Me.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਿਰ੍ਗੁਣਮਯੈਰ੍ਭਾਵੈਰੇਭਿਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਮਿਦਂ ਜਗਤ੍ ।
ਮੋਹਿਤਂ ਨਾਭਿਜਾਨਾਤਿ ਮਾਮੇਭ੍ਯਃ ਪਰਮਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ ॥ 13 ॥
Meaning
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਿਃ — three; ਗੁਣ-ਮਯੈਃ — consisting of the guṇas; ਭਾਵੈਃ — by the states of being; ਏਭਿਃ — all these; ਸਰ੍ਵਮ੍ — whole; ਇਦਮ੍ — this; ਜਗਤ੍ — universe; ਮੋਹਿਤਮ੍ — deluded; ਨ ਅਭਿਜਾਨਾਤਿ — does not know; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਏਭ੍ਯਃ — above these; ਪਰਮ੍ — the Supreme; ਅਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ — inexhaustible.
Translation
Deluded by the three modes [goodness, passion and ignorance], the whole world does not know Me, who am above the modes and inexhaustible.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਦੈਵੀ ਹ੍ਯੇਸ਼ਾ ਗੁਣਮਯੀ ਮਮ ਮਾਯਾ ਦੁਰਤ੍ਯਯਾ ।
ਮਾਮੇਵ ਯੇ ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ ਮਾਯਾਮੇਤਾਂ ਤਰਂਤਿ ਤੇ ॥ 14 ॥

ਦੈਵੀ — transcendental; ਹਿ — certainly; ਏਸ਼ਾ — this; ਗੁਣ-ਮਯੀ — consisting of the three modes of material nature; ਮਮ — My; ਮਾਯਾ — energy; ਦੁਰਤ੍ਯਯਾ — very difficult to overcome; ਮਾਮ੍ — unto Me; ਏਵ — certainly; ਯੇ — those who; ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ — surrender; ਮਾਯਾਂ ਏਤਾਮ੍ — this illusory energy; ਤਰਂਤਿ — overcome; ਤੇ — they.
Translation
This divine energy of Mine, consisting of the three modes of material nature, is difficult to overcome. But those who have surrendered unto Me can easily cross beyond it.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨ ਮਾਂ ਦੁਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਨੋ ਮੂਢਾਃ ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ ਨਰਾਧਮਾਃ ।
ਮਾਯਯਾਪਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਜ੍ਞਾਨਾ ਆਸੁਰਂ ਭਾਵਮਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਾਃ ॥ 15 ॥

ਨ — not; ਮਾਮ੍ — unto Me; ਦੁਸ਼੍ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਨਃ — miscreants; ਮੂਢਾਃ — foolish; ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ — surrender; ਨਰ-ਅਧਮਾਃ — lowest among mankind; ਮਾਯਯਾ — by the illusory energy; ਅਪਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ — stolen; ਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਃ — whose knowledge; ਆਸੁਰਮ੍ — demonic; ਭਾਵਮ੍ — nature; ਆਸ਼੍ਰਿਤਾਃ — accepting.
Translation
Those miscreants who are grossly foolish, who are lowest among mankind, whose knowledge is stolen by illusion, and who partake of the atheistic nature of demons do not surrender unto Me.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਚਤੁਰ੍ਵਿਧਾ ਭਜਂਤੇ ਮਾਂ ਜਨਾਃ ਸੁਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਨੋਰ੍ਜੁਨ ।
ਆਰ੍ਤੋ ਜਿਜ੍ਞਾਸੁਰਰ੍ਥਾਰ੍ਥੀ ਜ੍ਞਾਨੀ ਚ ਭਰਤਰ੍ਸ਼ਭ ॥ 16 ॥
Meaning
ਚਤੁਃ-ਵਿਧਾਃ — four kinds of; ਭਜਂਤੇ — render services; ਮਾਮ੍ — unto Me; ਜਨਾਃ — persons; ਸੁ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਿਨਃ — those who are pious; ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ — O Arjuna; ਆਰ੍ਤਃ — the distressed; ਜਿਜ੍ਞਾਸੁਃ — the inquisitive; ਅਰ੍ਥ-ਅਰ੍ਥੀ — one who desires material gain; ਜ੍ਞਾਨੀ — one who knows things as they are; ਚ — also; ਭਰਤ-ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼ਭ — O great one amongst the descendants of Bharata.
Translation
O best among the Bhāratas, four kinds of pious men begin to render devotional service unto Me – the distressed, the desirer of wealth, the inquisitive, and he who is searching for knowledge of the Absolute.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਤੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਜ੍ਞਾਨੀ ਨਿਤ੍ਯਯੁਕ੍ਤ ਏਕਭਕ੍ਤਿਰ੍ਵਿਸ਼ਿਸ਼੍ਯਤੇ ।
ਪ੍ਰਿਯੋ ਹਿ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਿਨੋਤ੍ਯਰ੍ਥਮਹਂ ਸ ਚ ਮਮ ਪ੍ਰਿਯਃ ॥ 17 ॥

ਤੇਸ਼ਾਮ੍ — out of them; ਜ੍ਞਾਨੀ — one in full knowledge; ਨਿਤ੍ਯ-ਯੁਕ੍ਤਃ — always engaged; ਏਕ — only; ਭਕ੍ਤਿਃ — in devotional service; ਵਿਸ਼ਿਸ਼੍ਯਤੇ — is special; ਪ੍ਰਿਯਃ — very dear; ਹਿ — certainly; ਜ੍ਞਾਨਿਨਃ — to the person in knowledge; ਅਤ੍ਯਰ੍ਥਮ੍ — highly; ਅਹਮ੍ — I am; ਸਃ — he; ਚ — also; ਮਮ — to Me; ਪ੍ਰਿਯਃ — dear.
Translation
Of these, the one who is in full knowledge and who is always engaged in pure devotional service is the best. For I am very dear to him, and he is dear to Me.

ਆਸ੍ਥਿਤਃ ਸ ਹਿ ਯੁਕ੍ਤਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਮਾਮੇਵਾਨੁਤ੍ਤਮਾਂ ਗਤਿਮ੍ ॥ 18 ॥

ਉਦਾਰਾਃ — magnanimous; ਸਰ੍ਵੇ — all; ਏਵ — certainly; ਏਤੇ — these; ਜ੍ਞਾਨੀ — one who is in knowledge; ਤੁ — but; ਆਤ੍ਮਾ ਏਵ — just like Myself; ਮੇ — My; ਮਤਮ੍ — opinion; ਆਸ੍ਥਿਤਃ — situated; ਸਃ — he; ਹਿ — certainly; ਯੁਕ੍ਤ-ਆਤ੍ਮਾ — engaged in devotional service; ਮਾਮ੍ — in Me; ਏਵ — certainly; ਅਨੁਤ੍ਤਮਾਮ੍ — the highest; ਗਤਿਮ੍ — destination.
Translation
All these devotees are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in knowledge of Me I consider to be just like My own self. Being engaged in My transcendental service, he is sure to attain Me, the highest and most perfect goal.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਬਹੂਨਾਂ ਜਨ੍ਮਨਾਮਂਤੇ ਜ੍ਞਾਨਵਾਨ੍ਮਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਤੇ ।
ਵਾਸੁਦੇਵਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਮਿਤਿ ਸ ਮਹਾਤ੍ਮਾ ਸੁਦੁਰ੍ਲਭਃ ॥ 19 ॥
Meaning
ਬਹੂਨਾਮ੍ — many; ਜਨ੍ਮਨਾਮ੍ — repeated births and deaths; ਅਂਤੇ — after; ਜ੍ਞਾਨ-ਵਾਨ੍ — one who is in full knowledge; ਮਾਮ੍ — unto Me; ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਤੇ — surrenders; ਵਾਸੁਦੇਵਃ — the Personality of Godhead, Kriṣṇa; ਸਰ੍ਵਮ੍ — everything; ਇਤਿ — thus; ਸਃ — that; ਮਹਾ-ਆਤ੍ਮਾ — great soul; ਸੁ-ਦੁਰ੍ਲਭਃ — very rare to see.
Translation
After many births and deaths, he who is actually in knowledge surrenders unto Me, knowing Me to be the cause of all causes and all that is. Such a great soul is very rare.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕਾਮੈਸ੍ਤੈਸ੍ਤੈਰ੍ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਃ ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇਨ੍ਯਦੇਵਤਾਃ ।
ਤਂ ਤਂ ਨਿਯਮਮਾਸ੍ਥਾਯ ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯਾ ਨਿਯਤਾਃ ਸ੍ਵਯਾ ॥ 20 ॥

ਕਾਮੈਃ — by desires; ਤੈਃ ਤੈਃ — various; ਹ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ — deprived of; ਜ੍ਞਾਨਾਃ — knowledge; ਪ੍ਰਪਦ੍ਯਂਤੇ — surrender; ਅਨ੍ਯ — to other; ਦੇਵਤਾਃ — demigods; ਤਂ ਤਮ੍ — corresponding; ਨਿਯਮਮ੍ — regulations; ਆਸ੍ਥਾਯ — following; ਪ੍ਰਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਯਾ — by nature; ਨਿਯਤਾਃ — controlled; ਸ੍ਵਯਾ — by their own.
Translation
Those whose intelligence has been stolen by material desires surrender unto demigods and follow the particular rules and regulations of worship according to their own natures.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯੋ ਯੋ ਯਾਂ ਯਾਂ ਤਨੁਂ ਭਕ੍ਤਃ ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਯਾਰ੍ਚਿਤੁਮਿਚ੍ਛਤਿ ।
ਤਸ੍ਯ ਤਸ੍ਯਾਚਲਾਂ ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਾਂ ਤਾਮੇਵ ਵਿਦਧਾਮ੍ਯਹਮ੍ ॥ 21 ॥
Meaning
ਯਃ ਯਃ — whoever; ਯਾਂ ਯਾਮ੍ — whichever; ਤਨੁਮ੍ — form of a demigod; ਭਕ੍ਤਃ — devotee; ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਯਾ — with faith; ਅਰ੍ਚਿਤੁਮ੍ — to worship; ਇਚ੍ਚਤਿ — desires; ਤਸ੍ਯ ਤਸ੍ਯ — to him; ਅਚਲਾਮ੍ — steady; ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਾਮ੍ — faith; ਤਾਮ੍ — that; ਏਵ — surely; ਵਿਦਧਾਮਿ — give; ਅਹਮ੍ — I.
Translation
I am in everyone’s heart as the Supersoul. As soon as one desires to worship some demigod, I make his faith steady so that he can devote himself to that particular deity.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ ਤਯਾ ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਯਾ ਯੁਕ੍ਤਸ੍ਤਸ੍ਯਾਰਾਧਨਮੀਹਤੇ ।
ਲਭਤੇ ਚ ਤਤਃ ਕਾਮਾਨ੍ਮਯੈਵ ਵਿਹਿਤਾਨ੍ਹਿ ਤਾਨ੍ ॥ 22 ॥
Meaning
ਸਃ — he; ਤਯਾ — with that; ਸ਼੍ਰਦ੍ਧਯਾ — inspiration; ਯੁਕ੍ਤਃ — endowed; ਤਸ੍ਯ — of that demigod; ਆਰਾਧਨਮ੍ — for the worship; ਈਹਤੇ — he aspires; ਲਭਤੇ — obtains; ਚ — and; ਤਤਃ — from that; ਕਾਮਾਨ੍ — his desires; ਮਯਾ — by Me; ਏਵ — alone; ਵਿਹਿਤਾਨ੍ — arranged; ਹਿ — certainly; ਤਾਨ੍ — those.
Translation
Endowed with such a faith, he endeavors to worship a particular demigod and obtains his desires. But in actuality these benefits are bestowed by Me alone.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਂਤਵਤ੍ਤੁ ਫਲਂ ਤੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤਦ੍ਭਵਤ੍ਯਲ੍ਪਮੇਧਸਾਮ੍ ।
ਦੇਵਾਂਦੇਵਯਜੋ ਯਾਂਤਿ ਮਦ੍ਭਕ੍ਤਾ ਯਾਂਤਿ ਮਾਮਪਿ ॥ 23 ॥
Meaning
ਅਂਤ-ਵਤ੍ — perishable; ਤੁ — but; ਫਲਮ੍ — fruit; ਤੇਸ਼ਾਮ੍ — their; ਤਤ੍ — that; ਭਵਤਿ — becomes; ਅਲ੍ਪ-ਮੇਧਸਾਮ੍ — of those of small intelligence; ਦੇਵਾਨ੍ — to the demigods; ਦੇਵ-ਯਜਃ — the worshipers of the demigods; ਯਾਂਤਿ — go; ਮਤ੍ — My; ਭਕ੍ਤਾਃ — devotees; ਯਾਂਤਿ — go; ਮਾਮ੍ — to Me; ਅਪਿ — also.
Translation
Men of small intelligence worship the demigods, and their fruits are limited and temporary. Those who worship the demigods go to the planets of the demigods, but My devotees ultimately reach My supreme planet.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਅਵ੍ਯਕ੍ਤਂ ਵ੍ਯਕ੍ਤਿਮਾਪਨ੍ਨਂ ਮਨ੍ਯਂਤੇ ਮਾਮਬੁਦ੍ਧਯਃ ।
ਪਰਂ ਭਾਵਮਜਾਨਂਤੋ ਮਮਾਵ੍ਯਯਮਨੁਤ੍ਤਮਮ੍ ॥ 24 ॥
Meaning
ਅਵ੍ਯਕ੍ਤਮ੍ — nonmanifested; ਵ੍ਯਕ੍ਤਿਮ੍ — personality; ਆਪਨ੍ਨਮ੍ — achieved; ਮਨ੍ਯਂਤੇ — think; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਅਬੁਦ੍ਧਯਃ — less intelligent persons; ਪਰਮ੍ — supreme; ਭਾਵਮ੍ — existence; ਅਜਾਨਂਤਃ — without knowing; ਮਮ — My; ਅਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ — imperishable; ਅਨੁਤ੍ਤਮਮ੍ — the finest.
Translation
Unintelligent men, who do not know Me perfectly, think that I, Bhagavan Sri Krishna, Kriṣṇa, was impersonal before and have now assumed this personality. Due to their small knowledge, they do not know My higher nature, which is imperishable and supreme.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਨਾਹਂ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਃ ਸਰ੍ਵਸ੍ਯ ਯੋਗਮਾਯਾਸਮਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਃ ।
ਮੂਢੋਯਂ ਨਾਭਿਜਾਨਾਤਿ ਲੋਕੋ ਮਾਮਜਮਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ ॥ 25 ॥
Meaning
ਨ — nor; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਃ — manifest; ਸਰ੍ਵਸ੍ਯ — to everyone; ਯੋਗ-ਮਾਯਾ — by internal potency; ਸਮਾਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਃ — covered; ਮੂਢਃ — foolish; ਅਯਮ੍ — these; ਨ — not; ਅਭਿਜਾਨਾਤਿ — can understand; ਲੋਕਃ — persons; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਅਜਮ੍ — unborn; ਅਵ੍ਯਯਮ੍ — inexhaustible.
Translation
I am never manifest to the foolish and unintelligent. For them I am covered by My internal potency, and therefore they do not know that I am unborn and infallible.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵੇਦਾਹਂ ਸਮਤੀਤਾਨਿ ਵਰ੍ਤਮਾਨਾਨਿ ਚਾਰ੍ਜੁਨ ।
ਭਵਿਸ਼੍ਯਾਣਿ ਚ ਭੂਤਾਨਿ ਮਾਂ ਤੁ ਵੇਦ ਨ ਕਸ਼੍ਚਨ ॥ 26 ॥
Meaning
ਵੇਦ — know; ਅਹਮ੍ — I; ਸਮਤੀਤਾਨਿ — completely past; ਵਰ੍ਤਮਾਨਾਨਿ — present; ਚ — and; ਅਰ੍ਜੁਨ — O Arjuna; ਭਵਿਸ਼੍ਯਾਣਿ — future; ਚ — also; ਭੂਤਾਨਿ — all living entities; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਤੁ — but; ਵੇਦ — knows; ਨ — not; ਕਸ਼੍ਚਨ — anyone.
Translation
O Arjuna, as Bhagavan Sri Krishna, I know everything that has happened in the past, all that is happening in the present, and all things that are yet to come. I also know all living entities; but Me no one knows.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਇਚ੍ਛਾਦ੍ਵੇਸ਼ਸਮੁਤ੍ਥੇਨ ਦ੍ਵਂਦ੍ਵਮੋਹੇਨ ਭਾਰਤ ।
ਸਰ੍ਵਭੂਤਾਨਿ ਸਮ੍ਮੋਹਂ ਸਰ੍ਗੇ ਯਾਂਤਿ ਪਰਂਤਪ ॥ 27 ॥
Meaning
ਇਚ੍ਚਾ — desire; ਦ੍ਵੇਸ਼ — and hate; ਸਮੁਤ੍ਥੇਨ — arisen from; ਦ੍ਵਂਦ੍ਵ — of duality; ਮੋਹੇਨ — by the illusion; ਭਾਰਤ — O scion of Bharata; ਸਰ੍ਵ — all; ਭੂਤਾਨਿ — living entities; ਸਮ੍ਮੋਹਮ੍ — into delusion; ਸਰ੍ਗੇ — while taking birth; ਯਾਂਤਿ — go; ਪਰਮ੍-ਤਪ — O conqueror of enemies.
Translation
O scion of Bharata, O conqueror of the foe, all living entities are born into delusion, bewildered by dualities arisen from desire and hate.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਯੇਸ਼ਾਂ ਤ੍ਵਂਤਗਤਂ ਪਾਪਂ ਜਨਾਨਾਂ ਪੁਣ੍ਯਕਰ੍ਮਣਾਮ੍ ।
ਤੇ ਦ੍ਵਂਦ੍ਵਮੋਹਨਿਰ੍ਮੁਕ੍ਤਾ ਭਜਂਤੇ ਮਾਂ ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਢਵ੍ਰਤਾਃ ॥ 28 ॥

ਯੇਸ਼ਾਮ੍ — whose; ਤੁ — but; ਅਂਤ-ਗਤਮ੍ — completely eradicated; ਪਾਪਮ੍ — sin; ਜਨਾਨਾਮ੍ — of the persons; ਪੁਣ੍ਯ — pious; ਕਰ੍ਮਣਾਮ੍ — whose previous activities; ਤੇ — they; ਦ੍ਵਂਦ੍ਵ — of duality; ਮੋਹ — delusion; ਨਿਰ੍ਮੁਕ੍ਤਾਃ — free from; ਭਜਂਤੇ — engage in devotional service; ਮਾਮ੍ — to Me; ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਢ-ਵ੍ਰਤਾਃ — with determination.
Translation
Persons who have acted piously in previous lives and in this life and whose sinful actions are completely eradicated are freed from the dualities of delusion, and they engage themselves in My service with determination.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਜਰਾਮਰਣਮੋਕ੍ਸ਼ਾਯ ਮਾਮਾਸ਼੍ਰਿਤ੍ਯ ਯਤਂਤਿ ਯੇ ।
ਤੇ ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮ ਤਦ੍ਵਿਦੁਃ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਮਧ੍ਯਾਤ੍ਮਂ ਕਰ੍ਮ ਚਾਖਿਲਮ੍ ॥ 29 ॥
Meaning
ਜਰਾ — from old age; ਮਰਣ — and death; ਮੋਕ੍ਸ਼ਾਯ — for the purpose of liberation; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਆਸ਼੍ਰਿਤ੍ਯ — taking shelter of; ਯਤਂਤਿ — endeavor; ਯੇ — all those who; ਤੇ — such persons; ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮ — Brahman; ਤਤ੍ — actually that; ਵਿਦੁਃ — they know; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਸ੍ਨਮ੍ — everything; ਅਧ੍ਯਾਤ੍ਮਮ੍ — transcendental; ਕਰ੍ਮ — activities; ਚ — also; ਅਖਿਲਮ੍ — entirely.
Translation
Intelligent persons who are endeavoring for liberation from old age and death take refuge in Me in devotional service. They are actually Brahman because they entirely know everything about transcendental activities.

ਸਾਧਿਭੂਤਾਧਿਦੈਵਂ ਮਾਂ ਸਾਧਿਯਜ੍ਞਂ ਚ ਯੇ ਵਿਦੁਃ ।
ਪ੍ਰਯਾਣਕਾਲੇਪਿ ਚ ਮਾਂ ਤੇ ਵਿਦੁਰ੍ਯੁਕ੍ਤਚੇਤਸਃ ॥ 30 ॥
Meaning
ਸ-ਅਧਿਭੂਤ — and the governing principle of the material manifestation; ਅਧਿਦੈਵਮ੍ — governing all the demigods; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਸ-ਅਧਿਯਜ੍ਞਮ੍ — and governing all sacrifices; ਚ — also; ਯੇ — those who; ਵਿਦੁਃ — know; ਪ੍ਰਯਾਣ — of death; ਕਾਲੇ — at the time; ਅਪਿ — even; ਚ — and; ਮਾਮ੍ — Me; ਤੇ — they; ਵਿਦੁਃ — know; ਯੁਕ੍ਤ-ਚੇਤਸਃ — their minds engaged in Me.
Translation
Those in full consciousness of Me, who know Me, the Supreme Lord, to be the governing principle of the material manifestation, of the demigods, and of all methods of sacrifice, can understand and know Me, the Supreme Lord within me, even at the time of death.
