ਯਤ੍ਨੇਸ਼ੁ ਸਰ੍ਵੇਸ਼੍ਵਪਿ ਨਾਵਕੇਸ਼ੀ ਕੇਸ਼ੀ ਸ ਭੋਜੇਸ਼ਿਤੁਰਿਸ਼੍ਟਬਂਧੁਃ ।

Meaning
ਯਤ੍ਨੇਸ਼ੁ - in (even all his) attempts; ਸਰ੍ਵੇਸ਼ੁ-ਅਪਿ - all even; ਨ-ਅਵਕੇਸ਼ੀ - not unsuccessful; ਕੇਸ਼ੀ ਸ - that Keshi; ਭੋਜ-ਈਸ਼ਿਤੁਃ- - of the Bhoja king (Kansa's); ਇਸ਼੍ਟ-ਬਂਧੁਃ - a close friend; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ - Thee; ਸਿਂਧੁਜਾ-ਅਵਾਪ੍ਯ - by the ocean born Laxmi attainable; ਇਤਿ-ਇਵ ਮਤ੍ਵਾ - thus as if thinking; ਸਂਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਤਵਾਨ੍ - approached (Thee); ਸਿਂਧੁਜ- - (as) born of the Sindhu land; ਵਾਜਿ-ਰੂਪਃ - in horse form;
Translation
A close friend of the Bhoja king Kansa, Keshi was never unsuccessful in any of his attempts. He took the form of a horse from the land of Sindhu, thinking that Thou were easily accessible to those born off Sindhu (ocean) as Thou are to Laxmi Devi.

Meaning
ਗਂਧਰ੍ਵਤਾਮ੍- - (though) the form of a Gandharva (celestial singer); ਏਸ਼ ਗਤਃ-ਅਪਿ - this (wicked one) assuming even; ਰੂਕ੍ਸ਼ੈਃ-ਨਾਦੈਃ - by fierce noises (voices); ਸਮੁਦ੍ਵੇਜਿਤ-ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਲੋਕਃ - frightening all the worlds; ਭਵਤ੍-ਵਿਲੋਕ-ਅਵਧਿ - Thee sighting until; ਗੋਪਵਾਟੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਮਰ੍ਦ੍ਯ - Gokula destructing; ਪਾਪਃ - the wicked one; ਪੁਨਃ-ਆਪਤਤ੍-ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ - then attacked Thee;
Translation
This wicked Asura, even though he had assumed the form of a Gandharva frightened all the worlds with his fierce voices. Until he set sight on Thee, the evil one destructed Gokula and then rushed to attack Thee.

Meaning
ਤਾਰ੍ਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ-ਅਰ੍ਪਿਤ- - on Garuda placed; ਅਂਘ੍ਰੇਃ-ਤਵ - feet of Thee; ਤਾਰ੍ਕ੍ਸ਼੍ਯ ਏਸ਼ ਚਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੇਪ - horse this, threw (kicked); ਵਕ੍ਸ਼ੋਭੁਵਿ - on the chest area; ਨਾਮ ਪਾਦਮ੍ - indeed his foot; ਭ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਗੋਃ ਪਦ-ਆਘਾਤ- - of (sage) Bhrigu, with feet hitting; ਕਥਾਂ ਨਿਸ਼ਮ੍ਯ - story having heard; ਸ੍ਵੇਨ-ਅਪਿ - by himself also; ਸ਼ਕ੍ਯਂ ਤਤ੍- - could be done that; ਇਤਿ-ਇਵ ਮੋਹਾਤ੍ - thus as if deludedly;
Translation
Thou, whose feet are placed on Garuda, Thy vehicle, was kicked on the chest by this horse demon by his foot. Perhaps he had heard the story of sage Bhrigu having hit Thee with the foot, he deludedly thought that he too could do so.

ਪ੍ਰਵਂਚਯਨ੍-ਅਸ੍ਯ - dodging his; ਖੁਰਾਂਚਲਂ - raised hoofs; ਦ੍ਰਾਕ੍-ਅਮੁਂ-ਚ - quickly,and him; ਚਿਕ੍ਸ਼ੇਪਿਥ - (Thou) flung; ਦੂਰ-ਦੂਰਮ੍ - far far away; ਸਮ੍ਮੂਰ੍ਚ੍ਛਿਤਃ-ਅਪਿ - fainting also; ਹਿ-ਅਤਿਮੂਰ੍ਚ੍ਛਿਤੇਨ - indeed in much great; ਕ੍ਰੋਧ-ਉਸ਼੍ਮਣਾ - rage burning; ਖਾਦਿਤੁਮ੍-ਅਦ੍ਰੁਤਃ- - to consume (Thee) rushed; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ - Thee;
Translation
Dodging his raised hoofs Thou quickly caught him and flung him far far away. Though he fainted for sometime, with an increased rage as though set afire, he rushed to consume Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਤ੍ਵਂ ਵਾਹਦਂਡੇ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਧੀਸ਼੍ਚ ਵਾਹਾਦਂਡਂ ਨ੍ਯਧਾਸ੍ਤਸ੍ਯ ਮੁਖੇ ਤਦਾਨੀਮ੍ ।
ਤਦ੍ ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍ਧਿਰੁਦ੍ਧਸ਼੍ਵਸਨੋ ਗਤਾਸੁਃ ਸਪ੍ਤੀਭਵਨ੍ਨਪ੍ਯਯਮੈਕ੍ਯਮਾਗਾਤ੍ ॥5॥
Meaning
ਤ੍ਵਂ - Thou; ਵਾਹ-ਦਂਡੇ - the horse punishing; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਧੀਃ-ਚ - and deciding; ਵਾਹਾ-ਦਂਡਂ - (Thy) arm, club (like); ਨ੍ਯਧਾਃ-ਤਸ੍ਯ - placed into his; ਮੁਖੇ ਤਦਾਨੀਮ੍ - mouth at that time; ਤਦ੍-ਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦ੍ਧਿ- - (by) its increasing (in size); ਰੁਦ੍ਧ-ਸ਼੍ਵਸਨਃ - (by) choking of breath; ਗਤਾਸੁਃ - (he) having died; ਸਪ੍ਤੀਭਵਨ੍-ਅਪਿ- - in a horse form though; ਅਯਮ੍- - this (Asura); ਐਕ੍ਯਮ੍-ਆਗਾਤ੍ - oneness (with Thee) attained;
Translation
Thou decided to punish the horse, and placed Thy strong club like arm into his mouth. At that time the arm increased in size and choked the horse to death. Even though the Asura was in the form of a horse, he attained oneness with Thee.
ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਆਲਂਭਮਾਤ੍ਰੇਣ ਪਸ਼ੋਃ ਸੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਕੇ ਨੂਤ੍ਨ ਇਵਾਸ਼੍ਵਮੇਧੇ ।
ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ਹਰ੍ਸ਼ਵਸ਼ਾਤ੍ ਸੁਰੇਂਦ੍ਰਾਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਾਂ ਤੁਸ਼੍ਟੁਵੁਃ ਕੇਸ਼ਵਨਾਮਧੇਯਮ੍ ॥6॥
Meaning
ਆਲਂਭ- - by killing; ਮਾਤ੍ਰੇਣ ਪਸ਼ੋਃ - merely, of the animal; ਸੁਰਾਣਾਂ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਕੇ - to the god's pleasure (joy); ਨੂਤ੍ਨ ਇਵ- - new as if; ਅਸ਼੍ਵਮੇਧੇ - in the Ashvamedha sacrifice; ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤੇ ਤ੍ਵਯਾ - done by Thee; ਹਰ੍ਸ਼ਵਸ਼ਾਤ੍ - inspired by joy; ਸੁਰੇਂਦ੍ਰਾਃ-ਤ੍ਵਾਂ - the gods Thee; ਤੁਸ਼੍ਟੁਵੁਃ - hailed; ਕੇਸ਼ਵ-ਨਾਮ-ਧੇਯਮ੍ - Keshava name giving (to Thee);
Translation
Merely by the killing of the animal the gods were full of joy. This was as if it were a new Ashvamedha sacrifice done by Thee. Delighted, the gods hailed Thee giving Thee the name Keshava, the killer of Keshi.

Meaning
ਕਂਸਾਯ ਤੇ - to Kansa Thy; ਸ਼ੌਰਿ-ਸੁਤਤ੍ਵਮ੍-ਉਕ੍ਤ੍ਵਾ - Vasudeva"s son having said; ਤਂ ਤਤ੍- - him (Kansa), his (Vasudeva's); ਵਧ-ਉਤ੍ਕਂ - killing eagerness; ਪ੍ਰਤਿਰੁਧ੍ਯ ਵਾਚਾ - dissuading verbally; ਪ੍ਰਾਪ੍ਤੇਨ - who had come; ਕੇਸ਼ਿ-ਕ੍ਸ਼ਪਣ-ਅਵਸਾਨੇ - at the end of Keshi's destruction; ਸ਼੍ਰੀ-ਨਾਰਦੇਨ ਤ੍ਵਮ੍- - by Shri Naarada, Thou; ਅਭਿਸ਼੍ਟੁਤਃ-ਅਭੂਃ - were praised;
Translation
Sage Naarada had told Kansa that Thou were the son of Vasudeva. Kansa eagerly set out to kill Vasudeva but was verbally dissuaded by Shri Naarada to do so. At the end of Keshi's destruction Naarada came to Thee and sung Thy praises.

ਕਦਾਪਿ - once; ਗੋਪੈਃ ਸਹ - with the Gopas; ਕਾਨਨਾਂਤੇ - in the forest; ਨਿਲਾਯਨ-ਕ੍ਰੀਡਨ-ਲੋਲੁਪਂ - hide and seek game engaged in; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ - Thee; ਮਯ-ਆਤ੍ਮਜਃ - Maya's son; ਪ੍ਰਾਪ - approached; ਦੁਰਂਤ-ਮਾਯਃ - (who had) immense magical powers; ਵ੍ਯੋਮ-ਅਭਿਧਃ - Vyoma named; ਵ੍ਯੋਮ-ਚਰ-ਉਪਰੋਧੀ - the gods obstructing;
Translation
One day Thou were engaged in playing the game of hide and seek with the Gopa boys. Just then the son of Maya, an Asura named Vyoma who had immense magical powers and who was an enemy of the gods, approached Thee.

ਸ - he (Vyoma); ਚੋਰ-ਪਾਲਾਯਿਤ-ਵਲ੍ਲਵੇਸ਼ੁ - among the thieves and the policemen boys; ਚੋਰਾਯਿਤਃ - (acting) as a thief; ਗੋਪ-ਸ਼ਿਸ਼ੂਨ੍ - the Gopa boys; ਪਸ਼ੂਨ੍-ਚ - and the cows; ਗੁਹਾਸੁ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤ੍ਵਾ - in a cave doing (putting); ਪਿਦਧੇ ਸ਼ਿਲਾਭਿਃ- - closed (the caves) with stones; ਤ੍ਵਯਾ ਚ ਬੁਦ੍ਧ੍ਵਾ - and by Thee, understanding (the situation); ਪਰਿਮਰ੍ਦਿਤਃ-ਅਭੂਤ੍ - killed was;
Translation
He, in the game, mingled among the boys who were playing as thief and policemen. Vyoma playing as thief put the Gopa boys and the cows in a cave and closed the mouth of the cave with a stone. As Thou understood the situation, Vyoma was killed by Thee.

ਏਵਂ ਵਿਧੈਃ-ਚ- - this and such like; ਅਦ੍ਭੁਤ- - strange; ਕੇਲਿ-ਭੇਦੈਃ- - sports of different kinds; ਆਨਂਦ-ਮੂਰ੍ਚ੍ਛਾਮ੍- - in bliss swooning (happiness); ਅਤੁਲਾਂ ਵ੍ਰਜਸ੍ਯ - extremely of Vraj; ਪਦੇ ਪਦੇ - every now and then; ਨੂਤਯਨ੍- - renewing; ਅਸੀਮਾਂ - unlimitedly; ਪਰਮਾਤ੍ਮਰੂਪਿਨ੍ - O Supreme Being; ਪਵਨੇਸ਼ - O Lord of Guruvaayur; ਪਾਯਾਃ - protect me;
Translation
Thou made Vraja swoon in bliss with such strange and different kinds of sports.Thou renewed Thy sports every now and then with unlimited variety. O Supreme Being! O Lord of Guruvaayur! protect me.
