ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਦਰ੍ਵਾਸਾਸ੍ਸੁਰਵਨਿਤਾਪ੍ਤਦਿਵ੍ਯਮਾਲ੍ਯਂ
ਸ਼ਕ੍ਰਾਯ ਸ੍ਵਯਮੁਪਦਾਯ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਯਃ ।
ਨਾਗੇਂਦ੍ਰਪ੍ਰਤਿਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਿਤੇ ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਪ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਰਂ
ਕਾ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਦਿਤਰਦੇਵਤਾਂਸ਼ਜਾਨਾਮ੍ ॥1॥

Meaning
ਦੁਰ੍ਵਾਸਾਃ- - the sage Durvaasaa; ਸੁਰ-ਵਨਿਤਾ-ਆਪ੍ਤ-ਦਿਵ੍ਯ-ਮਾਲ੍ਯਂ - from heavenly nymphs had obtained a divine garland; ਸ਼ੁਕ੍ਰਾਯ ਸ੍ਵਯਮ੍-ਉਪਦਾਯ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਯਃ - to Indra,having personally given it there then; ਨਾਗੇਂਦ੍ਰ-ਪ੍ਰਤਿਮ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਦਿਤੇ - by Indra's elephant it being trampled; ਸ਼ਸ਼ਾਪ ਸ਼ਕ੍ਰਂ - cursed Indra; ਕਾ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਾਂਤਿਃ- - what forbearance (is there); ਤ੍ਵਤ੍-ਇਤਰ- - other than Thee; ਦੇਵਤਾ-ਅਂਸ਼ਜਾਨਾਮ੍ - who are born of (other than Thee) Devas;

Translation
The sage Durvaasaa once gave a celestial garland to Indra, which he had got from heavenly nymphs. When he saw the garland being crushed by Indra's elephant, he cursed Indra. Where can forbearance be seen except in those born of and blessed by Thee.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸ਼ਾਪੇਨ ਪ੍ਰਥਿਤਜਰੇ਽ਥ ਨਿਰ੍ਜਰੇਂਦ੍ਰੇ
ਦੇਵੇਸ਼੍ਵਪ੍ਯਸੁਰਜਿਤੇਸ਼ੁ ਨਿਸ਼੍ਪ੍ਰਭੇਸ਼ੁ ।
ਸ਼ਰ੍ਵਾਦ੍ਯਾਃ ਕਮਲਜਮੇਤ੍ਯ ਸਰ੍ਵਦੇਵਾ
ਨਿਰ੍ਵਾਣਪ੍ਰਭਵ ਸਮਂ ਭਵਂਤਮਾਪੁਃ ॥2॥

Meaning
ਸ਼ਾਪੇਨ ਪ੍ਰਥਿਤ-ਜਰੇ-ਅਥ - due to the curse Indra became aged, then; ਨਿਰ੍ਜਰ-ਇਂਦ੍ਰੇ - Indra, who was ageless; ਦੇਵੇਸ਼ੁ-ਅਪਿ-ਅਸੁਰ-ਜਿਤੇਸ਼ੁ - when the Devas also were defeated by the Asuras; ਨਿਸ਼੍ਪ੍ਰਭੇਸ਼ੁ - (and so) had lost their glory; ਸ਼ਰ੍ਵ-ਆਦ੍ਯਾਃ - beginning with Shiva; ਕਮਲਜਮ੍-ਏਤ੍ਯ - approaching Brahmaa; ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਦੇਵਾਃ - all the gods; ਨਿਰ੍ਵਾਣ-ਪ੍ਰਭਵ - O Bestower of Salvation!; ਸਮਂ - with (Shiva); ਭਵਂਤਮ੍-ਆਪੁਃ - came to Thee;

Translation
O Bestower of Liberation! Indra known as the unaging one, became aged as a result of Durvaasaa's curse. His followers, the Devas lost all their glory and were defeated by the Asuraas. The gods along with Shiva and others went to Brahmaa and they all took refuge in Thee.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾਦ੍ਯੈਃ ਸ੍ਤੁਤਮਹਿਮਾ ਚਿਰਂ ਤਦਾਨੀਂ
ਪ੍ਰਾਦੁਸ਼੍ਸ਼ਨ੍ ਵਰਦ ਪੁਰਃ ਪਰੇਣ ਧਾਮ੍ਨਾ ।
ਹੇ ਦੇਵਾ ਦਿਤਿਜਕੁਲੈਰ੍ਵਿਧਾਯ ਸਂਧਿਂ
ਪੀਯੂਸ਼ਂ ਪਰਿਮਥਤੇਤਿ ਪਰ੍ਯਸ਼ਾਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ ॥3॥

Meaning
ਬ੍ਰਹ੍ਮਾ-ਆਦ੍ਯੈਃ - by Brahmaa and other gods; ਸ੍ਤੁਤ-ਮਹਿਮਾ ਚਿਰਂ - being sung Thy excellences for long; ਤਦਾਨੀਂ - at that time; ਪ੍ਰਾਦੁਸ਼੍ਸ਼ਨ੍ - appearing; ਵਰਦ - O Bestower of Boons!; ਪੁਰਃ - in front (of them); ਪਰੇਣ ਧਾਮ੍ਨਾ - with supreme glory (commanded); ਹੇ ਦੇਵਾ - O Gods!; ਦਿਤਿਜ-ਕੁਲੈਃ- - with the Asuras,; ਵਿਧਾਯ ਸਂਧਿਂ - making peace,; ਪੀਯੂਸ਼ਂ ਪਰਿਮਥਤ- - nectar churn out; ਇਤਿ ਪਰ੍ਯਸ਼ਾਃ-ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ - thus commanded Thee;

Translation
Brahmaa and the other gods sung Thy excellences for long. O Bestower of Boons! Thou then manifested Thyself before them in great glory and commanded them to make peace with the Asuras and then prepare to churn the milk ocean for nectar.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਸਂਧਾਨਂ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਵਤਿ ਦਾਨਵੈਃ ਸੁਰੌਘੇ
ਮਂਥਾਨਂ ਨਯਤਿ ਮਦੇਨ ਮਂਦਰਾਦ੍ਰਿਮ੍ ।
ਭ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਟੇ਽ਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ ਬਦਰਮਿਵੋਦ੍ਵਹਨ੍ ਖਗੇਂਦ੍ਰੇ
ਸਦ੍ਯਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਂ ਵਿਨਿਹਿਤਵਾਨ੍ ਪਯਃਪਯੋਧੌ ॥4॥

Meaning
ਸਂਧਾਨਂ ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਤਵਤਿ - having made peace; ਦਾਨਵੈਃ ਸੁਰੌਘੇ - with the Asuras by the gods; ਮਂਥਾਨਂ ਨਯਤਿ - when carrying the churning rod; ਮਦੇਨ ਮਂਦਰ-ਅਦ੍ਰਿਮ੍ - with great pride, the Mandara mountain; ਭ੍ਰਸ਼੍ਟੇ-ਅਸ੍ਮਿਨ੍ - (when) it fell down; ਬਦਰਮ੍-ਇਵ-ਉਦ੍ਵਹਨ੍ - as a berry picking it up; ਖਗੇਂਦ੍ਰੇ ਸਦ੍ਯਃ-ਤ੍ਵਮ੍ - On Garuda immediately Thou; ਵਿਨਿਹਿਤਵਾਨ੍ - placed it; ਪਯਃਪਯੋਧੌ - in the milk ocean;

Translation
Devas made peace with the Asuras and with great pride carried the Mandara mountain for use as a churning rod. The mountain fell from their hands on the way. Then Thou seated on Garuda, picked it up as if it were a tiny berry and installed it in the milk ocean.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਆਧਾਯ ਦ੍ਰੁਤਮਥ ਵਾਸੁਕਿਂ ਵਰਤ੍ਰਾਂ
ਪਾਥੋਧੌ ਵਿਨਿਹਿਤਸਰ੍ਵਬੀਜਜਾਲੇ ।
ਪ੍ਰਾਰਬ੍ਧੇ ਮਥਨਵਿਧੌ ਸੁਰਾਸੁਰੈਸ੍ਤੈ-
ਰ੍ਵ੍ਯਾਜਾਤ੍ਤ੍ਵਂ ਭੁਜਗਮੁਖੇ਽ਕਰੋਸ੍ਸੁਰਾਰੀਨ੍ ॥5॥

Meaning
ਆਧਾਯ ਦ੍ਰੁਤਮ੍-ਅਥ - placing quickly then; ਵਾਸੁਕਿਂ ਵਰਤ੍ਰਾਂ - Vaasuki (snake) (as the ) churning rope; ਪਾਥੋਧੌ - in that milk ocean; ਵਿਨਿਹਿਤ-ਸਰ੍ਵ-ਬੀਜ-ਜਾਲੇ - (in which) had been put all kinds of seeds and herbs; ਪ੍ਰਾਰਬ੍ਧੇ ਮਥਨ-ਵਿਧੌ - having started the process of churning; ਸੁਰ੍-ਅਸੁਰੈਃ-ਤੈਃ- - by those gods and Asuras; ਵ੍ਯਾਜਾਤ੍-ਤ੍ਵਂ - Thou by a trick; ਭੁਜਗ-ਮੁਖੇ-ਅਕਰੋਃ- - on the side of the serpent's mouth (Thou) put; ਸੁਰਾਰੀਨ੍ - the Asuras;

Translation
Then quickly placing Vasuki snake as the churning rope, the Devas and Asuras started the process of churning the milk ocean in which all kinds of herbs and seeds had been put. Thou then cleverly made the Asuras hold the head end of the snake.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਬ੍ਧਾਦ੍ਰੌ ਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਭਿਤਜਲੋਦਰੇ ਤਦਾਨੀਂ
ਦੁਗ੍ਧਾਬ੍ਧੌ ਗੁਰੁਤਰਭਾਰਤੋ ਨਿਮਗ੍ਨੇ ।
ਦੇਵੇਸ਼ੁ ਵ੍ਯਥਿਤਤਮੇਸ਼ੁ ਤਤ੍ਪ੍ਰਿਯੈਸ਼ੀ
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੈਸ਼ੀਃ ਕਮਠਤਨੁਂ ਕਠੋਰਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਠਾਮ੍ ॥6॥

Meaning
ਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਬ੍ਧ-ਆਦ੍ਰੌ - (when) the mountain (used as) a churning rod; ਕ੍ਸ਼ੁਭਿਤ-ਜਲ-ਉਦਰੇ - in the waters fully stirred; ਤਦਾਨੀਂ - then; ਦੁਗ੍ਧ-ਅਬ੍ਧੌ - of the milk ocean; ਗੁਰੁਤਰ-ਭਾਰਤਃ - because of its (mountain's) heavy weight; ਨਿਮਗ੍ਨੇ - sank; ਦੇਵੇਸ਼ੁ ਵ੍ਯਥਿਤਤਮੇਸ਼ੁ - the Devas becoming very worried; ਤਤ੍-ਪ੍ਰਿਯੈਸ਼ੀ - their (the Deva's) wellwisher (Thou); ਪ੍ਰਾਣੈਸ਼ੀਃ - assumed; ਕਮਠ-ਤਨੁਂ - a tortoise form; ਕਠੋਰ-ਪ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਠਾਮ੍ - with a hard back;

Translation
When the Mandara mountain as a churning rod had fully stirred the waters of the milk ocean to its depth, it sank due to its own weight. The Devas became very worried. Thee who are their well wisher, assumed the form of a tortoise with a hard back.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਵਜ੍ਰਾਤਿਸ੍ਥਿਰਤਰਕਰ੍ਪਰੇਣ ਵਿਸ਼੍ਣੋ
ਵਿਸ੍ਤਾਰਾਤ੍ਪਰਿਗਤਲਕ੍ਸ਼ਯੋਜਨੇਨ ।
ਅਂਭੋਧੇਃ ਕੁਹਰਗਤੇਨ ਵਰ੍ਸ਼੍ਮਣਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ
ਨਿਰ੍ਮਗ੍ਨਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਿਧਰਨਾਥਮੁਨ੍ਨਿਨੇਥ ॥7॥

Meaning
ਵਜ੍ਰ-ਅਤਿ-ਸ੍ਥਿਰ-ਕਰ੍ਪਰੇਣ - with the back more hard than the thunderbolt; ਵਿਸ਼੍ਣੋ - O All Pervading being!; ਵਿਸ੍ਤਾਰਾਤ੍- - and in extent (width); ਪਰਿਗਤ-ਲਕ੍ਸ਼-ਯੋਜਨੇਨ - exceeding a lakh of Yojanas; ਅਂਭੋਧੇਃ ਕੁਹਰ-ਗਤੇਨ - (the rod) which had sunk deep into the ocean; ਵਰ੍ਸ਼੍ਮਣਾ ਤ੍ਵਂ - with such a body Thou; ਨਿਰ੍ਮ੍ਗ੍ਨਂ ਕ੍ਸ਼ਿਤਿਧਰਨਾਥਮ੍- - the great mountain which had sunk (into the sea); ਉਨ੍ਨਿਨੇਥ - (Thou) lifted up;

Translation
O All pervading Being! by diving deep into the ocean Thou lifted up the sinking mountain on Thy back which was harder than a thunderbolt and more than a lakh of Yojanas in width.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਉਨ੍ਮਗ੍ਨੇ ਝਟਿਤਿ ਤਦਾ ਧਰਾਧਰੇਂਦ੍ਰੇ
ਨਿਰ੍ਮੇਥੁਰ੍ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਢਮਿਹ ਸਮ੍ਮਦੇਨ ਸਰ੍ਵੇ ।
ਆਵਿਸ਼੍ਯ ਦ੍ਵਿਤਯਗਣੇ਽ਪਿ ਸਰ੍ਪਰਾਜੇ
ਵੈਵਸ਼੍ਯਂ ਪਰਿਸ਼ਮਯਨ੍ਨਵੀਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਧਸ੍ਤਾਨ੍ ॥8॥

Meaning
ਉਨ੍ਮਗ੍ਨੇ - (the mountain) having come up; ਝਟਿਤਿ ਤਦਾ - quickly then; ਧਰਾਧਰੇਂਦ੍ਰੇ - the mountain,; ਨਿਰ੍ਮੇਥੁਃ-ਦ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਢਮ੍-ਇਹ - they churned with great force, here; ਸਮ੍ਮਦੇਨ ਸਰ੍ਵੇ - (and) with enthusiasm all of them (the Asuras and the Devas); ਆਵਿਸ਼੍ਯ - (Thou) entering; ਦ੍ਵਿਤਯਗਣੇ- - into both the parties; ਅਪਿ ਸਰ੍ਪਰਾਜੇ - and also the serpent Vasuki; ਵੈਵਸ਼੍ਯਂ - their fatigue; ਪਰਿਸ਼ਮਯਨ੍ - removing; ਅਵੀਵ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਧਃ ਤਾਨ੍ - invigorated them;

Translation
When the mountain was lifted up, they, the Devas and Asuras all churned with great force and enthusiasm. Thou entering into both the parties and also into the snake Vasuki, removed their fatigue and invigorated them.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਉਦ੍ਦਾਮਭ੍ਰਮਣਜਵੋਨ੍ਨਮਦ੍ਗਿਰੀਂਦ੍ਰ-
ਨ੍ਯਸ੍ਤੈਕਸ੍ਥਿਰਤਰਹਸ੍ਤਪਂਕਜਂ ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ ।
ਅਭ੍ਰਾਂਤੇ ਵਿਧਿਗਿਰਿਸ਼ਾਦਯਃ ਪ੍ਰਮੋਦਾ-
ਦੁਦ੍ਭ੍ਰਾਂਤਾ ਨੁਨੁਵੁਰੁਪਾਤ੍ਤਪੁਸ਼੍ਪਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਾਃ ॥9॥

Meaning
ਉਦ੍ਦਾਮ-ਭ੍ਰਮਣ-ਜਵ- - by the powerful speed of the whirling; ਉਨ੍ਨਮਤ੍-ਗਿਰੀਂਦ੍ਰ- - the mountain having come up; ਨ੍ਯਸ੍ਤ-ਏਕ-ਸ੍ਥਿਰਤਰ-ਹਸ੍ਤ-ਪਂਕਜਮ੍ - placed one strong lotus hand firmly; ਤ੍ਵਾਮ੍ - Thou; ਅਭ੍ਰਾਂਤੇ - in the heavens; ਵਿਧਿ-ਗਿਰਿਸ਼-ਆਦਯਃ - Brahmaa Shiva and other gods; ਪ੍ਰਮੋਦਾਤ੍-ਉਦ੍ਭ੍ਰਾਂਤਾ - overwhelmed with joy; ਨੁਨੁਵੁਃ- - praised Thee; ਉਪਾਤ੍ਤ-ਪੁਸ਼੍ਪ-ਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਾਃ - and shed showers of flowers;

Translation
When the Mandara mountain rose up because of the powerful speed of the whirling, Thou placed Thy one lotus hand firmly on it, to keep it in position. Brahmaa Shiva and other gods were overwhelmed with joy and praised Thee as they shed showers of flowers.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਦੈਤ੍ਯੌਘੇ ਭੁਜਗਮੁਖਾਨਿਲੇਨ ਤਪ੍ਤੇ
ਤੇਨੈਵ ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ਕੁਲੇ਽ਪਿ ਕਿਂਚਿਦਾਰ੍ਤੇ ।
ਕਾਰੁਣ੍ਯਾਤ੍ਤਵ ਕਿਲ ਦੇਵ ਵਾਰਿਵਾਹਾਃ
ਪ੍ਰਾਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਨ੍ਨਮਰਗਣਾਨ੍ਨ ਦੈਤ੍ਯਸਂਘਾਨ੍ ॥10॥

Meaning
ਦੈਤ੍ਯੌਘੇ - (when) the group of Asuras; ਭੁਜਗ-ਮੁਖ-ਅਨਿਲੇਨ - by the fire from the mouth of the serpent (the poisonous breath); ਤਪ੍ਤੇ - were scorched (tormented); ਤੇਨ-ਏਵ - by that even; ਤ੍ਰਿਦਸ਼ਕੁਲੇ-ਅਪਿ - the Devas also; ਕਿਂਚਿਤ੍-ਆਰ੍ਤੇ - were troubled a little; ਕਾਰੁਣ੍ਯਾਤ੍-ਤਵ - by Thy compassion; ਕਿਲ ਦੇਵ - Indeed O Lord!; ਵਾਰਿਵਾਹਃ ਪ੍ਰਾਵਰ੍ਸ਼ਨ੍- - The clouds were made to rain; ਅਮਰਗਣਾਨ੍- - on the Devas; ਨ ਦੈਤ੍ਯ-ਸਂਘਾਨ੍ - not on the Asuras;

Translation
The group of Asuras were scorched by the fire emitting from the mouth of the serpent. The Devas were also to some extent troubled. O Lord! By Thy compassion the clouds were made to rain on the Devas to cool them, but not on the Asuras.

ਸ਼੍ਲੋਕਃ
ਉਦ੍ਭ੍ਰਾਮ੍ਯਦ੍ਬਹੁਤਿਮਿਨਕ੍ਰਚਕ੍ਰਵਾਲੇ
ਤਤ੍ਰਾਬ੍ਧੌ ਚਿਰਮਥਿਤੇ਽ਪਿ ਨਿਰ੍ਵਿਕਾਰੇ ।
ਏਕਸ੍ਤ੍ਵਂ ਕਰਯੁਗਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟਸਰ੍ਪਰਾਜਃ
ਸਂਰਾਜਨ੍ ਪਵਨਪੁਰੇਸ਼ ਪਾਹਿ ਰੋਗਾਤ੍ ॥11॥

Meaning
ਉਦ੍ਭ੍ਰਾਮ੍ਯਤ੍ - ejecting up; ਬਹੁ-ਤਿਮਿ-ਨਕ੍ਰ-ਚਕ੍ਰਵਾਲੇ - many fish crocodiles and other aquatic creatures; ਤਤ੍ਰ-ਅਬ੍ਧੌ - there (when) the ocean; ਚਿਰ-ਮਥਿਤੇ-ਅਪਿ - in spite being churned for long; ਨਿਰ੍ਵਿਕਾਰੇ - remained unchanged; ਏਕਃ-ਤ੍ਵਂ - Thou alone; ਕਰ-ਯੁਗ-ਕ੍ਰੁਰੁਇਸ਼੍ਟ-ਸਰ੍ਪਰਾਜਃ - with (Thy) two hands pulled the (two ends) of the serpent king; ਸਂਰਾਜਨ੍ - shining brightly; ਪਵਨਪੁਰੇਸ਼ - O Lord of Guruvaayur!; ਪਾਹਿ ਰੋਗਾਤ੍ - relieve (me of my) diseases;

Translation
In spite of being churned for long, the ocean remained unchanged, though many fish crocodile and other aquatic creatures were thrown up. Thou alone, then, shining brilliantly, with Thy two hands pulled the two ends of the serpent. O Lord of Guruvaayur! Relieve me of my diseases.
